I do know now, thanks to Akira Kakuto, a TeXLive developer.
It seems Windows 8.1 doesn't allow tmpfile() to create files
in the root directory, presumably for security reasons.
Until the mingw developers fix their implementation of
tmpfile() accordingly, it will be necessary to revert to
using mktemp(), which is a bigger security risk :+)

Presumably gfortran doesn't use tmpfile() because the
binaries in pmx.zip seem to be okay in Windows 8.1.

Thanks Andre for alerting us to this issue.

Re: [Tex-music] PMX 2.73

2016-02-01 Thread Dieter

The latest 64Bit-Windows version from Bob runs without any problem.

Let me point out, that PMX has been capable of handling lyrics with
musixlyr (without M-Tx) ,

since I started to work with PMX many years ago.

However this new solution is much more transparent and easier to use,
than before.
It will help me also when I include lyrics in the translation from
MusicXML to PMX.

Thanks to Dirk Laurie, PMX can now handle lyrics directly, without having to

I'm also attaching an example .pmx I just put together, part of a Cantata I
had earlier published using M-Tx. Entering the text directly into PMX is now
really quite straightforward.

Andre: Is "pmxab.exe does not work anymore" the error
message or your comment? If the latter, what is the error
message? I presume you do have a 64 bit system.

Andre: I've confirmed that on 64 bit Windows 8.1, the
pmxab.exe formerly in pmx.zip fails when it's about to
output a tex file. I don't know why yet but I've produced a
new pmxab.exe for 64 bit Windows using gfortran and it runs
on Windows 8.1. Please try downloading pmx.zip again from
WIMA and try it.

Thanks Dieter. But I've now had two reports of problems,
specifically the program stopping with an error message at
the end of the second pass. Please let me know which version
of Windows you're using.

As the manual states, all the work is done by a single macro
\pmxlyr.

The mean weaknesses of the current version of \pmxlyr,
caused by the low level of my TeXpertise, are:

1. Only one verse of lyrics per voice (musixlyr allows several).
2. Support for lyrics is available only on staff 1 or staff 2
of instrument 1,2,3 or 4. (Not sure that this limit is documented
in the manual.)

Extending the limit in Weakness 2 is easy enough — one look
at the TeX code will suffice. The real weakness is actually that
the method used will always have a limit.

I challenge the real TeXperts on this list to get rid of those
weaknesses!

I don't have the slightest idea why or what to do about that. Have you had
that problem with my compilations before? Can you wait until Bob Tennent
does his compilations and try those? Or can you compile the FORTRAN
