My youngest son (age 21) is going to New York for Christmas and New Years and
is absolutely excited about all the snow. Frankly, I grew up on it (native
Chicagoan) and if I never see another flake it will be too soon.

Favorite christmas song this year: Stephen Colbert's Another Christmas song.
You can get it for free on i-tunes if you download the free christmas album.

ps: not a flake in sight; just walked back from the pool :)

I suspect that this student wouldn't do a "poop load" of extra work anyhow. (I
love Annette's flowery adjectives; a girl after my own heart, as the expression
goes...)

But words to the wise: At Plymouth State University, where I'm an adjunct, we
received the following reminder which I think clearly addresses possible
problems with Annette's suggestion:

1. It is against faculty policy to allow any student the opportunity to do any
"extra work over and above that described in the syllabus, to influence his or
her grade, when the same opportunity has not been made available to all
students."

2. No student may be permitted "to perform extra work after final grades have
been submitted to improve his or her grade."

3. Final grades may not be changed unless there has been (a) an error in
computing the grade or (b) a documented violation of the Fair Grading Policy.

Do other institutions have this policy? I think it's a good one, and it saves
us the extra pressure from students once they get a look at their grade and
think they could possibly get it changed by doing some after-the-fact extra
credit. Then we're stuck with the poop load of extra work.

We are looking right now at about 19 inches of snow and have a severe storm
warning that is scheduled to end at 6 am tomorrow. So, I guess you might say I
saw a little snow.

My favorite Christmas song is still "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus," by Jimmy

anywhere near as much when it came out later.

2009-12-19 Thread Bill Southerly
I live about 30 minutes west of Frostburg in the mountains and we have 16-18
inches of snow and still snowing. Of course, our annual snowfall is 120 inches
so no big deal since everyone owns a 4-wheel drive vehicle and our county does
a good job of clearing the roads. My biggest problem is getting out of our 1/4
mile driveway winding through the woods in the middle of nowhere.

Since we just finished our finals this week and finally my grading, I have been
off-line until now trying to recover. Of course since I am on sabbatical
starting now I will have plenty of time to recharge.

Happy holidays to everyone.

I've got what looks like 16 inches on the ground as of 2:30 eastern time and

2009-12-19 Thread Paul C Bernhardt
Do you want this student to one day, without warning, walk in and say, "I'm the
radiologist your physician called in to consult on your case."

I think that answers your question.

You have clear guidelines in the syllabus, the student didn't take advantage of
opportunities to improve their grade. Case closed. If the student knew she
needed a B or better she should have put forth the effort to ensure that grade.
That she was unaware that she needed to take the final to improve her grade
until after the fact makes for another reason to not want this student to ever
be introduced to you as your radiologist.

I think the grading is done according to the syllabus and not to
individual situations. I think to do otherwise would actually cause
legal issues in terms of other students. Besides, when she applies to
radiology school, she will have to submit all transcripts so her B from
elsewhere should meet their requirement.

However, if she has difficult with tests, you won't be able to pass the
radiology exams!

We have about 16" in our front yard. We live at the end of a
road and the snow plow left a 6' high by 15' wide pile of snow at
the edge of our yard.

I don't have a favorite song but I have favorite CDs - Vince
Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas" and Louis Armstrong's "What
a Wonderful Christmas." This year's addition to the Christmas CD
collection is "An Oscar Peterson Christmas" and an Alligator
compilation disk called "Genuine Houserockin' Christmas." Both
are highly recommended

I can't listen to Nutcracker because I have danced in a local
production for many years and the music elicits strong imagery
related to the performance (costume changes, etc).

Her request is worded a lot less off-puttingly than is typical for a
pre-med "I need this grade" missive, but:

in spite of what she says did not attend approximately 1/3 of the

...the falsehood doesn't speak well for her.

The medical school's policy ("they willl not accept an application
with a g[r]ade that i received in your class") sounds unjustifiable.
If I had a favorable impression of the student, I would offer to
contact the medical school and vouch for her application (while
leaving the course grade as is). But I'm not sure that I would have a
favorable impression of this student.

[tips] Ho-hum: Adolescent and parental metnal health

2009-12-19 Thread sblack
Nothing new here, just venting.

Giannakopoulos G, et al (2009). Adolescents' wellbeing and
functioning: Relationships with parents' subjective general
physical and mental health. Health and Quality of Life Outcomes
7:100 doi:10.1186/1477-7525-7-100

>From the abstract:

"Parental subjective mental health status was significantly
correlated with adolescents´ better physical and psychological
wellbeing, moods and emotions"

"Conclusion: This study reinforces the importance of parental
subjective health status, along with other variables, as a
significant factor for the adolescents´ HRQoL [health-related
quality of life]".

Doesn't that sound like a causal conclusion, namely that
parental mental health has a (childrearing) causal effect on the
mental and physical health of their adolescents?

They make this clearer in the body of the paper itself, where
they argue in the conclusion that when professionals treat
adolescents, "Great attention should be given to addressing
parental mental health issues through targeted psychosocial
individual and/ or family therapies". In other words, to treat the
kids, you have to treat the parents".

Yet buried elsewhere in their report is this disclaimer:

"As the study was cross-sectional, it was not possible to assess
whether there was a causal relationship between parental
subjective health status and adolescents´ HRQoL".

Then why are they drawing conclusions and making
recommendations as though it was? That their correlations
could be due to genetic transmission from parents to child
doesn't seem to have occurred to them.

In other words, they're still at it.

I'm in central Pennsylvania and it's been snowing since early this morning. We
have about 4-6 inches and it is still snowing hard. Glad I'm not going anywhere

We're ~25 miles east of NYC and not a flake in sight (and assuming Mike Palij

Don't know about that Frostburg place, but where I live in SW PA, we have about
3-4" in my driveway right now, and it's still snowing (although not at a
furious pace). I'd be happy to see this move off toward NY!

Over the years of teaching statistics, I've sometimes toyed with the idea of
having students do a semester long project where they record local weather
predictions and then do various analyses related to accuracy. Never gotten
around to it, but I'd guess the error would be large. Especially when it comes
to snowfall, I think the forecasts tend to purposely err on the high side.

As for favorite holiday music, no single song comes to mind. But a Serafin
tradition is to listen to the Nutcracker. If time permits, we'll also queue up
Handel's Messiah (nice background music during the traditional Christmas eve
dinner). Oh, one individual favorite that just came to mind is Bing Crosby &
David Bowie doing Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth. Very cool combination. And

Happy shoveling, Mike!

It's only getting up to 70 here today, winter is definitely on the way. Had to
turn the pool heater on.

My current fave is Bob Dylan's cover of Brave Combo's Must be Santa. If you

Gary, I nearly made the same mistake. What probably tripped us was the December
2008 date, an apparent typo that appears at the top of the Contents page --the
first page of the PDF in the link provided by Jordan,

I'm so sorry but the answer to question of "What book by
Charles Dickens was published on December 19, 1843" is

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Carol

"A Tale of Two Cities" was published in 1859, first appearing
in serialized form in Dicken's magazine "All the Year Round"
starting April 30, 1859 and ending in November 25, 1859.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Tale_of_Two_Cities

That's okay, to some people all of Dicken's works look alike.

Thank you for playing. As a consolation prize departing contestants
receive a copy of the home edition of the "TiPS Game!"
