Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hello everyone?

2008-04-26 Thread Ammar Karim
Oh and considering I will do a format of my Linux partition,

It will be okay to put the iso in /media/sda5/hardy

And then mounting it? This should create vmlinuz and initrd.gz files inside
/media/sda5/hardy which I will copy to /boot ?

Lemme try it in a bit. Will tell you all about it.

Thanks, Ammar

Hi Ammar bhai, nice to hear from you. Hope you're doing well.

You can try the same way you did it on Mandriva. I'm describing the
process below, though I don't guarantee it to work. Try it and let me
know if it worked or not.

1) Create a new directory where the ISO file will be mounted:
sudo mkdir /mnt/hardy

2) Let's mount it:
mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso /mnt/hardy

3) Now copy the kernel and initrd images from /mnt/hardy and copy them
to /boot (file names: vmlinuz and initrd.gz)

4) Now edit the bootloader. I'm assuming that you're using GRUB, but
if you use LILO, then let me know.
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
or
sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

Add the following:

title Hardy Install
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.gz

5) Reboot your system and choose Hardy Install from the boot menu.

Let me know if it works or not.

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hello everyone?

2008-04-26 Thread Ammar Karim
Thanks Russel bhai. Gonna try it ektu porei :-D

But just to clarify...

1. I should copy just the vmlinuz and initrd.gz files from inside the iso
file and paste into /boot

2. but should also leave the iso as it is, without extracting its contents
wholly to /mnt/hardy

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Hello everyone?

2008-04-26 Thread Ammar Karim
Well I'm reading up on the email exchanges. I have downloaded Hardy desktop
CD (not alternate) but have not burnt it on a CD and installed it yet.

I've had a problem upgrading to feisty to gutsy using the alternate Gutsy cd
(it just doesn't work). So I will be backing up my /home/user files and then
doing a format and installing Hardy.

Can anyone suggest if I can do an install direct from the iso or extracted
iso files on a hard drive partition (I used to do this for Mandriva) without
having to burn a CD? Its ok if I have to make a boot floppy disk... but
please share if this is possible.

Thanks

Ammar
