[Bug 110158] Re: wpa_supplicant locked up consuming 100% resources

2007-08-29 Thread Albert Cardona
Happened again this week, twice. Tonight I've closed all apps -the
laptop was responding, only the NetworkManager was locked up, frozen in
a half-turn of it's green slashes. In a terminal 'top' would list
wpa_supplicant as using 100% resources. Then I've chosen System / quit -
shutdown, and went through the shutdown procedure.

The ubuntu logo showed up, the slider run a bit, then the splash
disappeared and printed:

Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon
Failed to kill daemon: timer expired
umount2: Device or resource busy
umount: /dev/sda8 busy - remounted read-only
mount: / is busy

After a while the words:

Will now halt

got appended, but the machine did NOT halt. I had to push the power
button for a few seconds for that.

I cannot try out gutsy because this is the laptop where I work. I am
willing though to try out a backport of Gutsy's wpa_supplicant. Also
next time it locks up I'll try to backtrace it.

2007-08-29 Thread Hilario J. Montoliu \(hjmf\)
Thank you Ulfgaard for submitting this report.

Please indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled; and if
this crash is reproducible describe it as in much detail as possible so
we can have a test case to reproduce.

Also check that the crash is still reproducible in '-safe-mode' (just
launch firefox with that arg from the command line) as that way the
extensions and themes you might have wont load in that session.

Finally as the retrace we've made isn't very informative, could you
please try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions on [1],
and upload the results to [2].

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 135016] Re: Evolution prevents nfs server from working when synchronising folders

2007-08-29 Thread RichardKinder
I beg to differ - this is a bug (albeit a bit of a touchy-feely bug with
little hard data). Probably kernel related more than anything (lots of
small files being opened/closed, causing excessive interrupt load/busy
waiting). Possibly even the SATA disk/drivers doing bad things (haven't
looked at the guts of that part of the kernel).

Further information:

If the evolution process is killed off halfway through the
synchronisation, the nfs server recovers and allows connections again.
This suggests resource starvation. What's particularly bad in this case
is a userspace application is starving the nfs kernel server. Not your
typical situation, but somewhat scary if multi-user systems are
considered.

Of course if it's related to bad hardware then there's nothing anyone
can really do. However, since I have no other indications that the
problem is hardware related (no kernel log messages screaming out at me,
no funny sounds from the HD) I think this is just an issue with
balancing the system. Reducing the load evolution puts on the system
would be the workaround/fix.

I'll leave this as invalid, but if I find any other cases where
evolution is resource starving my machine, I'll reopen.

I'll also test this out on the next release when it comes out.

Regards, Richard

[Bug 135458] X server on Parallels 3.0 crashes upon restart after extra desktop effects is enabled

2007-08-29 Thread Michiel Sikma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

Yesterday, I had installed Gutsy in a virtual computer under Parallels
3.0 for Mac OS X (this is a standard x86 virtualizer, and quite
popular). Just to see what it looked like, I enabled extra desktop
effects as I was setting it up. Nothing seemed to have changed when I
did that, but it didn't seem to complain in any way. I updated the
system, installed Java, and then shut it down. Today, I'm restarting the
machine, to find that the X server is constantly crashing while it's
trying to start. I get the following error message in the typical
blue/grey screen of X death:

The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90
seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2
minutes before trying again on display :0.

Followed by an OK button. After pressing OK, it just waits 2 minutes and
then again tries--and fails--to start the X server. I haven't figured
out a workaround yet because I have no idea where the desktop effects
config files are stored. I couldn't find anything in xorg's config file,
anyway.

Again, the environment is Parallels 3.0, a virtualization software (this
particular one was running without DirectX support, with the guest
computer having 512 MB RAM and 16 MB video memory) on Mac OS X, running
on an Intel iMac 20 inch, of which the specs are largely the same as at
http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html, except the video card, which is
an ATi Radeon X1600.

[Bug 135460] Booting with USB drive crashes RAID array

2007-08-29 Thread Waster
Public bug reported:

In latest Gutsy, booting with a USB drive plugged in causes my md RAID10
to fall apart. On the last occassion, I got a complete hang, too, but
this is not the main focus of this bug report. Rebooting without the
device plugged in worked, but the array had to resync. This is almost
certainly due to a drive renaming problem. It seems that for similar
reasons I cannot boot from a USB drive.

[Bug 135382] Re: panel animations should be disabled if compiz is enabled

2007-08-29 Thread Wousser
Maybe it has anything to do with the videocard the user is using. I've an ATI
9800, maybe my card is to slow to display the animations correctly.
If you search google you'll see that more people are having slow animations.

I thought the same thing about the application-opening animation (which
for some reason is very slow under XGL). After poking around it gconf I
found a way to turn it off: Set the apps/panel/global/enable_animations
key to false.

Minimizing windows shows an ugly black border around them or is choppy.
Code: gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /apps/panel/global/enable_animations
False

On a side note, if you are running GNOME, it is reccomended to disable
/apps/panel/global/enable_animations. This will turn off the panel “zoom
effect” when clicking launchers, which has been known to slow down and
possibly crash compiz.

Also, AIGLX and Composite are already enabled in the server, so no need
to specify them in the config.

[Bug 135463] Radeon Mobility 7500 does not detect video projector

I plug my thinkpad t41 incl. ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon
Mobility 7500] to a video projector, then boot the notebook (the only way X and
linux detect an external monitor). X does not regonize the resolution of the

too) (hint: X of feisty does not detect the available resolutions of the

[Bug 135471] Addressbook crash when searching contacts by any field contains

2007-08-29 Thread Bill Gjestvang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The evolution addressbook crashes whenever I search my contacts list by
any field contains, unless all contacts match the search. So if any
one contact doesn't match the search, the addressbook crashes.

The popup message I get:
Evolution Error
The Evolution addressbook has quit unexpectedly.
Your contacts for file:///home/bill/.evolution/addressbook/local/system will
not be available until Evolution is restarted.

100% repeatable.

To repeat:
(1) Go into your contacts list (any addressbook)
(2) Change the search to Any field contains
(3) Enter some text that shouldn't match any contacts
(4) Press enter
And it should pop up a dialog with the above error.

No crash files are created in /var/crash.

[Bug 133293] Re: [unmetdepds] cecilia has unmet dependancies

2007-08-29 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
Which build logs?
If you mark a bug as fix resolved you should at least give the references.

All I can see is that there is no new csound or cecilia package:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cecilia
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/csound

The last csound build logs still do not show an x86_64 built:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+builds?build_text=csoundbuild_state=all

and apt-cache still reports an unmet dep:

Package cecilia version 2.0.5-2ubuntu2 has an unmet dep:

Can you please explain how is this solved?

[Bug 111222] Re: new azureus package 2.5.0.4

2007-08-29 Thread Polygon
Again, im using gutsy, and the azureus package is STILL 2.5.0.0, which
is extremely buggy (at least on my computer), and could benefit greatly
to being updated to 2.5.0.4

is it still possible to update the package before gutsy releases final?

[Bug 86970] Re: Printing from Java does not work

2007-08-29 Thread Andi
I (any many others...) had the same problem: The printer did not accent
jobs.

This can be fixed in this way:

* create a link from /usr/lib/libcups.so to /usr/lib/libcups.so.2
* edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf : remove the line Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock
* restart CUPS

But then an empty page is printed. This can be fixed in this way:

# cp /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops.dist
# cat /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops

= New pstops ==
#!/bin/bash

JOBID=$1
USER=$2
TITLE=$3
COPIES=$4
SPEC=$5
FILE=$6

TEMP=`mktemp /tmp/pstops.XXX` || exit 1

# we're reading from STDIN, store it into the temporary file
if test -z $FILE -o ! -f $FILE ; then
  cat $TEMP
else
  cp $FILE $TEMP
fi

# remove offending commands
sed -i -e 's/\/DeferredMediaSelection true //' $TEMP

# execute the command
/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops.dist $JOBID $USER $TITLE \
 $COPIES $SPEC $TEMP

# removing temporary file
rm -f $TEMP
===

Note that the location of your pstops may be different (this is for RHEL 5) and
the one in /usr/bin is NOT the one used by CUPS.

(Source: Adam C,
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6506286)

After doing that, printing works perfectly.

I have no idea who is responsibly for the bug. CUPS, Sun, the Ubuntu
package? But I know from others that the problem exists with the Ubuntu
JDK package as well as with the original Sun package.

Here is the discussion (but only in German):

after finding in a mailbox one needs a button to show again the full
mailbox, not only what is selected. - put a clear button next to the
find field, which does not only clear the field but shows all messages
again.

[Bug 135475] JACK puts folder into user directory

2007-08-29 Thread markus31
Public bug reported:

I installed JACK two days ago on a fully updated Gutsy system. Just
noticed that JACK put a strange folder into my personal files folder. It
is named jack-0200ee01 and contains the following files:

jack.freedb
jack.progress
jack.toc.

I did not encounter this problem in 7.04.

1.) Could you please fix JACK so that it behaves like other programs that
either put a .something-file into your personal files folder or that put
their presets and working data somewhere else in the first place?
2.) Can you give notice when we can delete this folder without damaging JACK by

I see your problem. The reason is that S-1-1-0 apparantly is synonymous
with Everyone, but the string Everyone is not actually recognized. I
think this is mostly a documentation problem. It shouldn't say
Everyone:R, when that's not actually the default. It could say that
the default is that everyone has read access, but writing it in quotes
is misleading.

[Bug 57957] Re: install/uninstall doesn't complete because of broken init-script

2007-08-29 Thread Martin Menschner
Jonathan's instructions didn't work for me. I get:

Starting VMware services:
   Virtual machine monitorfailed
   Virtual ethernet failed
done
invoke-rc.d: initscript vmware-player, action start failed.
dpkg: error processing vmware-player (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 vmware-player

Vmplayer seems to have some trouble with Atheros chipsets. I used a
tar.gz installation before and it stopped working after I installed an
Atheros PCI WiFi card and bridged vmnet0 (or any vmnet, for that matter)
to ath0. Whenever I did that it would tell me vmplayer wasn't properly
configured. The tar.gz install still does work fine when bridged to
eth0.

[Bug 134819] Re: suspend/hibernate failure (gutsy and fglrx)

2007-08-29 Thread jay aranguren
I have the same exact problem. Like scarecrow and osteenbergen, I can
suspend my T60 using vesa driver with no problem.

Another way for me to suspend, is to switch to a VT, stop gdm, unload fglrx,
blacklist fglrx, then run
sudo pmi action sleep

It's a lot of work but it works. Although I don't really benefit
anything since I have to close my existing X session :(

Indeed. This is a common problem, actually. There are many features we
add in each release cycle that will not be obvious on anything but fresh
installs. This holds true for both server and desktop software and is
rather unfortunate in both cases. I agree with seb128, though. Messing
about with user's configuration files is error prone and frowned upon.
I'm not sure how to handle it instead, though.

[Bug 134938] Re: nvidia-glx-config makes the x-server crash (Tribe 5)

2007-08-29 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
John:
Fair enough (I know about the difference between nv and nvidia - my aim wasn't
to help you workaround the problem insomuch as have you reproduce the problem
so it could be properly diagnosed). I would have liked to have seen the log and
known exactly how the drivers were installed as this is typically the
information required to correctly categorise bug reports (this does not mean
the issue will be fixed though).

Some bugs can stick around for a long time requiring retesting,
debugging and recovery steps after the testing which may be unobvious.
If you are just looking for help and workarounds (effectively one off
support) with a particular issue then I would recommend using
https://answers.launchpad.net/ as you may get a faster response and less
may be assumed. Good luck!

Resolving bug as invalid as reporter has gone back to Feisty.

[Bug 130325] Re: glxgears, 3d apps, crash X when using compiz-fusion (gutsy) (nvidia-glx-new 9755)

2007-08-29 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I strongly recommend asking NVIDIA for help with this issue using their
forum on http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14. If you
are thinking of doing this you will HAVE to manually install their
official binary package (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual for potential gotchas and
a brief guide) and you MUST heed the steps in
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678 . NVIDIA
employees will probably not look at issues that do not meet their
guidelines.

If NVIDIA do investigate your problem please post a link to the forum
thread within a comment here.

[Bug 109836] Re: Linksys USB NIC prevents boot-up or locks system after plugging in after boot on Fiesty Fawn

2007-08-29 Thread g.beretta
I have good news! !!
As suggested by Brian, I tried the Gutsy Gibbon live.
After activating all the repositories, I installed by Synaptic the drivers for
Atmel wifi devices provided by the Gutsy distribution.
I didn't yet test all thoroughly, but there was no more keyboard freezing, and
iwconfig was reporting correctly the ESSID of the wlan without need for any
manual configuration. So it seems that the bug is solved in Gutsy.
I noted also that the driver is reported as working for kernels = 2.6.20.
If this is true, the driver supplied with Gutsy should work also for Feisty. I
am not so clever to transport the package into Feisty, but if somebody tells
me how to, I am willing to try and maybe we can close this bug.

Greetings
Giorgio
