[Bug 110158] Re: wpa_supplicant locked up consuming 100% resources
Happened again this week, twice. Tonight I've closed all apps -the laptop was responding, only the NetworkManager was locked up, frozen in a half-turn of it's green slashes. In a terminal 'top' would list wpa_supplicant as using 100% resources. Then I've chosen System / quit - shutdown, and went through the shutdown procedure. The ubuntu logo showed up, the slider run a bit, then the splash disappeared and printed: Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon Failed to kill daemon: timer expired umount2: Device or resource busy umount: /dev/sda8 busy - remounted read-only mount: / is busy After a while the words: Will now halt got appended, but the machine did NOT halt. I had to push the power button for a few seconds for that. I cannot try out gutsy because this is the laptop where I work. I am willing though to try out a backport of Gutsy's wpa_supplicant. Also next time it locks up I'll try to backtrace it. -- wpa_supplicant locked up consuming 100% resources https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/110158 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you Ulfgaard for submitting this report. Please indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled; and if this crash is reproducible describe it as in much detail as possible so we can have a test case to reproduce. Also check that the crash is still reproducible in '-safe-mode' (just launch firefox with that arg from the command line) as that way the extensions and themes you might have wont load in that session. [Bug 135016] Re: Evolution prevents nfs server from working when synchronising folders
I beg to differ - this is a bug (albeit a bit of a touchy-feely bug with little hard data). Probably kernel related more than anything (lots of small files being opened/closed, causing excessive interrupt load/busy waiting). Possibly even the SATA disk/drivers doing bad things (haven't looked at the guts of that part of the kernel). Further information: If the evolution process is killed off halfway through the synchronisation, the nfs server recovers and allows connections again. This suggests resource starvation. What's particularly bad in this case is a userspace application is starving the nfs kernel server. Not your typical situation, but somewhat scary if multi-user systems are considered. Of course if it's related to bad hardware then there's nothing anyone can really do. However, since I have no other indications that the problem is hardware related (no kernel log messages screaming out at me, no funny sounds from the HD) I think this is just an issue with balancing the system. Reducing the load evolution puts on the system would be the workaround/fix. I'll leave this as invalid, but if I find any other cases where evolution is resource starving my machine, I'll reopen. I'll also test this out on the next release when it comes out. [Bug 135458] X server on Parallels 3.0 crashes upon restart after extra desktop effects is enabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop Yesterday, I had installed Gutsy in a virtual computer under Parallels 3.0 for Mac OS X (this is a standard x86 virtualizer, and quite popular). Just to see what it looked like, I enabled extra desktop effects as I was setting it up. Nothing seemed to have changed when I did that, but it didn't seem to complain in any way. I updated the system, installed Java, and then shut it down. Today, I'm restarting the machine, to find that the X server is constantly crashing while it's trying to start. I get the following error message in the typical blue/grey screen of X death: The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0. Followed by an OK button. After pressing OK, it just waits 2 minutes and then again tries--and fails--to start the X server. I haven't figured out a workaround yet because I have no idea where the desktop effects config files are stored. I couldn't find anything in xorg's config file, anyway. Again, the environment is Parallels 3.0, a virtualization software (this particular one was running without DirectX support, with the guest computer having 512 MB RAM and 16 MB video memory) on Mac OS X, running on an Intel iMac 20 inch, of which the specs are largely the same as at http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html, except the video card, which is an ATi Radeon X1600. ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: crash desktop-effects parallels x11 ** Summary changed: - X server on Parallels 3.0 crashes upon restart after extra desktop effects is enabled + X server crashes upon restart after extra desktop effects is enabled on Parallels 3.0 ** Tags added: crash desktop-effects parallels x11 -- X server crashes upon restart after extra desktop effects is enabled on Parallels 3.0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135458 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 135382] Re: panel animations should be disabled if compiz is enabled
Maybe it has anything to do with the videocard the user is using. I've an ATI 9800, maybe my card is to slow to display the animations correctly. If you search google you'll see that more people are having slow animations. I thought the same thing about the application-opening animation (which for some reason is very slow under XGL). After poking around it gconf I found a way to turn it off: Set the apps/panel/global/enable_animations key to false. Minimizing windows shows an ugly black border around them or is choppy. Code: gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /apps/panel/global/enable_animations False On a side note, if you are running GNOME, it is reccomended to disable /apps/panel/global/enable_animations. [Bug 86970] Re: Printing from Java does not work
I (any many others...) had the same problem: The printer did not accent jobs. This can be fixed in this way: * create a link from /usr/lib/libcups.so to /usr/lib/libcups.so.2 * edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf : remove the line Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock * restart CUPS But then an empty page is printed. This can be fixed in this way: # cp /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops.dist # cat /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops = New pstops == #!/bin/bash JOBID=$1 USER=$2 TITLE=$3 COPIES=$4 SPEC=$5 FILE=$6 TEMP=`mktemp /tmp/pstops.XXX` || exit 1 # we're reading from STDIN, store it into the temporary file if test -z $FILE -o ! -f $FILE ; then cat $TEMP else cp $FILE $TEMP fi # remove offending commands sed -i -e 's/\/DeferredMediaSelection true //' $TEMP # execute the command /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops.dist $JOBID $USER $TITLE \ $COPIES $SPEC $TEMP # removing temporary file rm -f $TEMP === Note that the location of your pstops may be different (this is for RHEL 5) and the one in /usr/bin is NOT the one used by CUPS. (Source: Adam C, http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6506286) After doing that, printing works perfectly. I have no idea who is responsibly for the bug. CUPS, Sun, the Ubuntu package? But I know from others that the problem exists with the Ubuntu JDK package as well as with the original Sun package. John: Fair enough (I know about the difference between nv and nvidia - my aim wasn't to help you workaround the problem insomuch as have you reproduce the problem so it could be properly diagnosed). I would have liked to have seen the log and known exactly how the drivers were installed as this is typically the information required to correctly categorise bug reports (this does not mean the issue will be fixed though). Some bugs can stick around for a long time requiring retesting, debugging and recovery steps after the testing which may be unobvious. If you are just looking for help and workarounds (effectively one off support) with a particular issue then I would recommend using https://answers.launchpad.net/ as you may get a faster response and less may be assumed. [Bug 86666] Re: Feisty crashes after grub, before boot process, if usplash is enabled (amd64)
Yep, vbetool vbemode set 0x118 does the same crash, nothing works after that, not even Magic SysRq key combinations. Apparently setting any vga=xxx parameter does things differently and does not use that, then. -- Feisty crashes after grub, before boot process, if usplash is enabled (amd64) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/8 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 109836] Re: Linksys USB NIC prevents boot-up or locks system after plugging in after boot on Fiesty Fawn
I have good news! !! As suggested by Brian, I tried the Gutsy Gibbon live. After activating all the repositories, I installed by Synaptic the drivers for Atmel wifi devices provided by the Gutsy distribution. I didn't yet test all thoroughly, but there was no more keyboard freezing, and iwconfig was reporting correctly the ESSID of the wlan without need for any manual configuration. So it seems that the bug is solved in Gutsy. I noted also that the driver is reported as working for kernels = 2.6.20. If this is true, the driver supplied with Gutsy should work also for Feisty. I am not so clever to transport the package into Feisty, but if somebody tells me how to, I am willing to try and maybe we can close this bug.
