[Bug 61711] Re: very slow booting and no boot splash

2008-02-19 Thread Darrel O'Pry
I experienced the same error with a fresh install.
usplash.conf was configure for a resolution of 1280x1024, my computer only
supports 1024x768.

I updated the xres and yres values in /etc/usplash.conf for a 1024x768
display.

I then had to run:

   sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

to update the boot images so the new configuration could take effect.

[Bug 193606] [NEW] module-assistant fails to install open-vm-source

2008-02-19 Thread Roshan Shariff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: open-vm-tools

I've installed open-vm-tools{,-gui} on Ubuntu Hardy (version
2008.01.23-74039-0ubuntu1). I tried installing the corresponding kernel
modules using "module-assistant auto-install open-vm-source".

The build fails with errors like "invalid syntax in conditional" (the
full error log is attached). The first error occurs in line 29 in
/usr/src/modules/open-vm/vmblock/Makefile which is

ifeq KVERREL
VM_UNAME = $(KEVERREL)
else
VM_UNAME = $(shell uname -r)
endif

Debian doesn't seem to have any similar bugs, nor can I find any other
mentions of this problem via a cursory Google search.

Thanks

the current package is not compatible with the current version of ghc (6.8.2) -
considering only synaptic.
it cannot be loaded, because the installed ghc does not satisfy the dependency
of the package

(this is the case also for other packages - should i report each
individually - they need all be checked against 6.8.2)

[Bug 193605] [NEW] Feature Freeze Exception request for Conduit 0.3.8

2008-02-19 Thread Tony Yarusso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: conduit

Hardy is currently shipping with Conduit 0.3.6. With the changes in
0.3.7 and 0.3.8 numerous bugs were fixed, including many involving
Flickr, F-Spot, and Tomboy, as well as general clean-up and
solidification of the code (a 0.4 release is upcoming soon).
Additionally, support was added for syncing Gmail contacts, an often-
requested feature. In order that we might ship as few bugs as possible
and deliver the most sought-after features reasonably possible, I think
it would be highly beneficial to include those changes in 8.04,
especially given its LTS status.

I have not testing building and installing myself, but have been
following the Conduit development mailing list and there do not appear
to be any regressions that have been mentioned there. (If I had the
time to mess with the packaging / building I might be able to give it a
shot, but it will be far more effecient for someone more experienced
with the package to try that step instead.)

[Bug 189514] Re: Auto mount points of disk partitions changing with each boot

2008-02-19 Thread Slash123
The partitions are mounted automatically on logon (I didnt manually add
them to fstab or anything).

The disks are logical partitions of my hard disk (ntfs partitions). The
hard disk is 60 GB and is divided into 5 partitions - 3 ntfs (/dev/sda1
- 20GB, /dev/sda5 - 20GB, /dev/sda6 - 10GB), one ext3 (/dev/sda3 - 10GB
- the Ubuntu partition) and one swap (/dev/sda7). The three ntfs
partitions (/dev/sda1, /dev/sda5, /dev/sda6) keep changing labels
(disk1, disk2, disk3) everytime I restart the computer.

incorporate your feedback regarding titles henceforth.

[Bug 189844] Re: [Hardy-Alpha 4 PPC] Screen resolution correct but shifted to the right

2008-02-19 Thread Brian Gr
Similar, but no amount of logging in/out, sending commands to the
console, using virtual terminals, seems to help. My problem is
immediately noticeable once past gdm, and I wish I could do something to
make the problem worse - at least I'd have some idea. I've tried
changing the login to a "plain" debian style login, and tried using just
a simple window manager. The only thing I can do is reduce the
resolution to 1400x1050 which now has black pillars on each side, but at
least it is centered. 1680x1050 is the native resolution on this 20"
iMac PPC display.

I also put my Feisty xorg.conf in service on Hardy, but it didn't make
any difference.

I had to go back to Gutsy since I erased my Alpha image, and the latest
daily builds (19 Feb) no longer recognize the cdrom, hard drive, load
modules, or do partitioning. Different bugs - I'll try again with a
new image in a few days.

What makes it easier is that with PPC, there is no choice but to use the
standard nv driver on this model. It might be a bit late for Gutsy, but
I'll keep plugging away at it...

2008-02-19 Thread Christian Schuerer
I've just tested it again and it works now on my system. The version of

problem was caused by python in general, which was updated recently.

I set the status to "Invalid", don't know if this is the right option if
a problem just disappears over time. I'd ask others who are subcribed to

RE: [Bug 108923] Re: Display not waking up after blanked screen

2008-02-19 Thread Mattias Örtenblad

I'm afraid this problem (or a similar one) still remains. When I suspended my
computer and woke it up again the screen was black. I could see the cursor
though which I think I didnt earlier. I tried restarting X with ctrl alt bs and
just as I did I saw my desktop (or at least the desktop background) for a
fraction of a second. Restarting X didnt help though, I had to reboot the
computer to make it work again.

Perhaps this is another bug since this has to do with suspend and I can
see the cursor now.

I think I ran hardy alpha when I commented on the bug. Now running
Gutsy.

[Bug 193600] [NEW] tracker preferences cannot be closed, because trackered uses all resources

2008-02-19 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

i had tracker switched off, but wanted to give it a second try. so i opened the
tracker preferences and swichted indexing on (both: indexing and watching).
then i got a message to restart tracker, which i did ok.
then tried to close the preference window - not successful, (waiting: not
responding box) because trackered, now started again, did consume all resources
(albeit reporting < 10 % of CPU in monitor).

when a response occured (30 seconds - 1 minute): it said 'tracker must
be restarted...) -> infinite loop.

i stopped it by clicking no. then the window close.

(this occured after trackered run for 7 hours continuously on an
otherwise unused system at night).

at least with my configuration and amount of files (20 GB) tracker is
unusable for resource hugging.

I don't know whether its the right bug or should I put up a new bug for

Can you tell me the output of

No, that will not work. I tried it several times. No omega call involved
here.

Maybe you have a stray fmtutil.cnf file in HOME somewhere?

>Anyhow, you mention interfaces which depends on this package, they are
part of the apertium package or are in different (supplemental)
packages? In the former case I would also agree to ack this.

They are in separate modules that are currently being packaged. `tolk'
is the main one, which you can see here.

  http://xixona.dlsi.ua.es/~fran/debian/apertium-tolk/

  Wiki: http://xixona.dlsi.ua.es/wiki/index.php/apertium-tolk

`tolk' is the main one. It is awaiting upload to Debian. The reason I
ask for this module in particular is point number 2 on the list. D-Bus
likes having its stuff in /usr, and on most Ubuntu/Debian systems
configuring it to not have its stuff in /usr is quite complicated,
certainly more than I would expect a user to be able to do.

What is your
HOME
env variable? What is TEXMFHOME?

We had similar problems because HOME had a terminal /, which made
TEXMFHOME=/path/to/home//texmf
and thus searches the full homedir.

It is important that HOME does not have a terminal slash.

Next release (TeX Live 2008) will have a fix for that

[Bug 191127] Re: simple-backup-config does not check for validity of regex exclusion rules

2008-02-19 Thread Oumar Aziz OUATTARA
Hello,

Thank you for your patch. I appreciate a lot your motivation and help.
I don't maintain Sbackup (at least for now) anymore but as you have submitted a
patch, it would be nice to have it included in Ubuntu for other users.

There is a plan to re-merge Sbackup and NSsbackup though. But that won't
be for Hardy. So it's better having Ubuntu-dev patching Sbackup 0.10.4.

As for Launchpad usage, by submitting your patch here, since I have set
the Bug for all projects (NSsbackup, Sbackup Upstream and Sbackup
(Ubuntu) ), the patch is available for all projects and all developers
have been notified.

As for the plan on Implementing logging in the software, it has been
done on NSsbackup (information available on
https://edge.launchpad.net/nssbackup/ ). You can easily install
NSsbackup by Using NSsbackup-Team PPA ( https://edge.launchpad.net
/~nssbackup-team/+archive ). Take the gutsy version (0.1-6) if you want
something stable. Version 0.2 is the development version.

I'll review you patch and add it to NSsbackup (I must admit that I was
thinking that I've already fixed this bug :-( ).

Best regards
wattazoum

[Bug 193507] Re: compile fails without BLK_DEV_INITRD

2008-02-19 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi James,

One workaround is to also disable CONFIG_ACPI which will allow the build
to finish, just not sure if that's something you want disabled or not.

If you take a peek at the Makefile:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ head linux-2.6.24/init/Makefile
#
# Makefile for the linux kernel.
#

obj-y  := main.o version.o mounts.o
ifneq ($(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD),y)
obj-y += noinitramfs.o
else
obj-$(CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD) += initramfs.o
endif

You can see that since you've disabled BLK_DEV_INITRD, initramfs.o is
not being built and thus "early_populate_rootfs" is not defined. As a
hack to get the compile to finish, you can comment out the
"early_populate_rootfs" call from linux-2.6.24/init/main.c with
something like:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ diff -Naur ubuntu-hardy/init/main.c
linux-2.6.24/init/main.c
--- ubuntu-hardy/init/main.c2007-12-09 15:11:22.0 -0800
+++ linux-2.6.24/init/main.c2008-02-19 21:47:33.0 -0800
@@ -644,7 +644,9 @@

check_bugs();

+#ifdef CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD
early_populate_rootfs(); /* For DSDT override from initramfs */
+#endif
acpi_early_init(); /* before LAPIC and SMP init */

/* Do the rest non-__init'ed, we're now alive */

Since BLK_DEV_INITRD is enabled by default for the Ubuntu kernels,
you're really building your own custom kernel by disabling this option.
I'm not sure how much attention the kernel team will devote to this bug
because of that fact but I'll ask them to take a peek anyways. Thanks.

[Bug 193592] [NEW] aha1542 causes kernel panic

2008-02-19 Thread Frank Bokhorst
Public bug reported:

This bug was already reported as #1127928 (package linux-source-2.6.22)

The reported bug still occurs in Ubuntu version 7.10 with almost the
same error message reported.

This happens both when I run sane-find-scanner and also when launching
xsane.

The scanner device is Hewlett Packard C5100A. The device is OK, I have
tested it with sg_utils.

The aha1542 module works OK for the scsi CD-ROM drive and also OK for an
internal scsc disk drive (Quantum LPS).

The same C5100A scanner works fine on the same computer when running
under OS/2 (eCS) using sane of OS/2.

[Bug 192830] Re: Unable to Obtain IP address and connect to unprotected wireless networks

2008-02-19 Thread landin
Yeah, the computer stayed in the same place, although NM lists about 10
different access points. I tried to make it connect to just one access
point by adding

iface eth1 inet dhcp
wireless-mode managed
wireless-essid `The MAC address of one access point`

(Hopefully this is correct)

to /etc/network/interfaces and then tried to manually bring up the
network and dhclient still failed to get an ip address, although I
couldn't find any debug output other than dhclient's "I couldn't get
anything so I'm going to sleep" message.

Any more Ideas?

[Bug 192032] Re: Ubuntu crashes when changing user sesion.

2008-02-19 Thread Turbo
Sorry, I had to change the original description because it was all wrong
(sorry about that :-s :-s).

I just tried again after Ubuntu updated itself but saddly the problem is
still there.

Best Regards.

** Description changed:

  Hi!!.

First, my congratulations to all of you who make this Beauty of Ubuntu a
reality. I have been learning it by my self since version 6, so far,
I'm still impressed by the quick improvings in this great OS.

Now, let get to work ;-)

  My system is:

  Athlon 64 X2 6000, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 80 GB HDD IDE, Motherboard MSI K9N
Platinum, Video ATI Radeon X1950XT. All of this is running Ubuntu 7.10
Gutsy Gibbon full patched. As 2 GB of RAM is plenty (in theory) I
disabled the swap partition when first installed, meaning there is only
two EXT3 partitions (root and home).

- The problem:
+ How to reproduce it:

- Very easy. If you click the shut down button and then select "Switch
- user" in order to start another sesion, you get blank screen and a non
- responding Ubuntu in such a way that you'll need to hard reset the PC.
- The first time I saw that, I closed every aplication and tried again
+ * You will need at least two accounts created in Ubuntu (in my case, one for
my daughter and the other one mine).
+ * Click the shut down button and then select "Switch user" in order to start
another sesion. Input user name and password, you should go in normally.
+ * Now click in Shut down again and then click on "Close Sesion" (as if you
where going back to the first session).
+ * If you got lucky, now there is a blank screen and a non responding Ubuntu
in such a way that you'll need to hard reset the PC.
+
+ The first time I saw that, I closed every aplication and tried again
with the same result, then, I disabled the Compiz and it happened again.
By the way, the privative driver from ATI is being used; it was
  installed using the Envy app.

  Thank you so much.

  Turbo.
  Colombia.

[Bug 193008] Re: Firefox corrupt downloads

2008-02-19 Thread perellicippo
when you want to download a file, rapidshare(or another web hosting service)
propose to you a page where you must insert a code, then you click on a button
to download your file
you select where you want to save your file and store it... that's all
it's the same in gmail with an image... on the right there is a link to
download the image.. click on it and save in a folder...
these are normal things that a browser can do for a long time
but now... 50% of downloaded file are corrupted using firefox
the zip or rar file present a different deflating error in the same file
downloaded 3/4 times...

[Bug 193584] [NEW] Transmission doesn't save torrent list on exit

2008-02-19 Thread Shivan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission

if I open transmission, add torrents manually (doesn't seem to be
correctly associated with .torrent files), let it start the dowloads,
and even finish some, no matter wich one I remove, if I restart, they'll
all be there.

I use the "keep a copy of the torrent file" setting, but I'm not sure
this info is relevant.

[Bug 193117] Re: LTS-to-LTS upgrade failed on python-apt dependency

2008-02-19 Thread David Bensimon
The method I used for attempting to upgrade was directly from 6.06.1 to
8.04:

1) Added "dapper-proposed" repository to /etc/apt/sources.list

# proposed packages
deb http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-proposed main restricted
deb http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-proposed universe multiverse
deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-proposed main restricted
deb-src http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-proposed universe multiverse

2) sudo apt-get install update-manager-core

3) update-manager -d

The update manager did ask me if I wanted to update my distro. (All
screenshots attached)

[Bug 186527] Re: cupsys fails to install or run

2008-02-19 Thread Aaron Albright
This seems to be a problem with cupsys actually starting, which I don't
believe is related to the apparmor problem.

Lars,

please run

sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

and then run

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

And post any errors in the /var/log/messages.

It definitely seems there is a problem with cupsys. As well try running;

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get remove cupsys
sudo apt-get install cupsys

Used this work-around from earlier today and it seemed to either fix the
problem or skip around it.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/193260/comments/3

To fix this problem edit the file:

/usr/bin/pycentral

go to line 1592 and comment that line:

#if __name__ == '__main__':

Save and exit.
