   2.2.2-pre1 (released today).

No, it hasn't been backported as far as I can see, so this is something
that needs to be done for nut-2.2.2-pre2. Since we have active maintainers
for this driver, I didn't do this myself.

Can you (the bug reporters) grab this, call configure as per the
packaging/debian/rules, make and test from the build dir?

 That probably won't help (yet).

right, this has just been confirmed.

@Carlos, Andrey, Alexander, Jon: can one of you take care of
backporting this to Testing for -pre2?

thanks,
Arnaud

These patches all seem to be missing a versioned dependency on the

They also don't take into account that several of these init scripts use

[Bug 211631] [NEW] CIFS/SMBFS issue (was not resolved on #207441)

2008-04-03 Thread Hamish
Public bug reported:

I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they automount
on startup. An example of this is here:
//ip address of nas box/share name /home/hamish/directory name cifs
credentials=/home/hamish/.smbcredentials,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,uid=1000,gid=1000
  0 0

** note the use of cifs in the lines above **

(The username and password are in the .smbcredentials file)

On startup, for each entry in the /etc/fstab file, I get the following in dmesg:
[ 70.495504] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation
[ 70.495569] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101
But the shares are mounted, and a nautilus session opens up (which is also
annoying...)

Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an error
message:
CIFS VFS: server not responding
CIFS VFS: no response for cmd 50 mid this number changes
And takes about 2 minutes to timeout. This also happened with Gutsy

Should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed so that it
works? It is related to the starting of network-manager and CIFS shares
trying to connect on startup *before* the network is up, and dismounting
the shares *after* network-manager is stopped.

Hamish

PS: note to Chuck Short. I am using cifs.

[Bug 65230] Re: startup messages continue on screen after first login prompt appears

2008-04-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Scott, do you have any comments on the proposed fix for this bug? It
seems to me like a straightforward solution to defer starting the getty
on tty1 until after the rest of rc2 has finished. Perhaps the proposed
patch isn't future-proof against other services being migrated to use
upstart events instead of sysv init scripts (?), but that doesn't seem
to me like a reason to avoid a partial fix that could get us through
hardy.

[Bug 202247] Re: m1330 screen flicker

2008-04-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
Shivan, can you explain why you suspect it's an ACPI issue rather than
X?

Other possibilities could include performance problems, or incorrect
modelines. These can all cause different kinds of flicker. Performance
flickering you would expect to be accompanied by cpu loads. Modeline
issues will go away or change nature by switching to other resolutions.

If the issue is visible on the tty console (either while X is running or
not), then that would pretty much rule out X. If it's an ACPI issue,
then perhaps something in /etc/acpi would assist in proving it.

[Bug 211173] [NEW] Resuming from suspend or hibernate results in black screen

2008-04-03 Thread John Gruenenfelder
Public bug reported:

This problem occurs with the most current snapshot of Hoary (kernel
2.6.24-14). The machine is a Shuttle SN95G5 nforce3 chipset with an
Athlon64 X2 processor. The video card is an Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT.
This is a desktop machine with a wired LAN connection.

I can suspend to RAM and hibernate and both processes appear to finish
properly. However, when I then try to resume, in both cases I get the
same result. The screen stays black and X never displays. The machine
is not entirely dead, though, because the HDD light blinks every 5-10
seconds. Also, if I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, I get a flurry of disk
activity and then it goes back to the 5-10 second blinking.
Fortunately, I can use the Magic SysRq key combos to sync, unmount, and
reboot the machine. The network is not active during this and I cannot
SSH into the machine or even ping it.

These results occur using the binary Nvidia driver. I did try using the
nv driver as well, but it was a couple weeks ago and so it isn't quite a
fair comparison. In that case, resuming from a suspend did actually
hang the machine requiring a manual reset. I was able to successfully
hibernate and resume the machine with the nv driver, however.

I really hope I can get this issue resolved as it is one of the only
features not working with the latest Ubuntu on my system. I have not
specified a package for this bug as I'm not sure if it should go against
the kernel, the Nvidia driver, pm-utils, or something else.

[Bug 211178] [NEW] dpkg should install other packages in the background while promting for user input

2008-04-03 Thread Kristian Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg

A dist-upgrade usually takes a long time, which is why you would
probably leave the computer while executing it. The problem with this is
the many required user inputs that interrupt the upgrade and sets it on

I don't have more than one device mounted to the same directory. I just have my
external hard drive always being displayed in a Nautilus application window on
start up.

Did you try to install Hardy Heron Beta yet instead of just running the
live CD. If you have a separate /home partition from your root
partition as I do, then if you choose you could always put Feisty back
on without losing any personal data. I when back in forth a few times
with nor data loss. I didn't even loose my bookmarks in Firefox.

Hardy has had almost daily software updates, so it is getting fairly
stable.

Your troubles may go away with a install as opposed to a live CD run.

Below is my mount data; /dev/sdb1 always comes up in Nautilus on startup, a USB
external drive.

Dave, you are probably correct. I've opened another bug in launchpad
against hardy pre-release. I'm not having a problem with gutsy.

If you were having the same problem as I experience you could tell that
by opening a terminal window under applications-terminal and entering
the mount command with no options. Unless it returns more than one
device mounted to the same directory my problem is definitely different
from yours. If, by remote chance, it does you could try the second
circumvention I list, though reading above it looks like you are now ok.

[Bug 199455] Re: [fglrx] __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 () from /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so

2008-04-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ah, yes, I remember this. Quoth you:

Upstream MythTV indicated that this is actually a bug in mesa. Quoting
on MythTV #4206:

For anyone keeping score at home various myth threads open and close the
display for local queries. Inside X11 this eventually works its way down
to dri_glx.c::OpenDriver? which dlopen's the correct .so on the first
call. Subsequent calls get the handle from that initial dlopen.

Unfortunately this doesn't increment the reference count for the .so and
a dlclose at the first nested XOpenDisplay/XCloseDisplay (like in
libmythtv's get_glx_version) causes the dri library to be unloaded and
soon after that MythTV go boom. The unload message in the initial report
turned out to be the key, something I realized moments after submitting
the bug.

The quick fix, and this is Linux-specific, is to tweak the inital search
at the top of OpenDriver? in mesa's dri_glx.c.

[Bug 209900] Re: Festival won't speak when other app is playing sounds

2008-04-03 Thread puccha
I think festival uses oss, a legacy sound server that only allows one
audio stream at a time for most soundcards. Look for an argument to make
it use alsa. Or alternatively fool festival and route the audio stream
through alsa:

$ echo hello | aoss festival --tts

You might want to install the alsa-oss package first.

Alsa can mix different sound streams on a software level if your
soundcard can't.

[Bug 196261] Re: Could not calculate the upgrade

2008-04-03 Thread Richard Birnie

Having looked at the log files it looks like it's a temporary issue.
This type of issue is usually caused because the repositories change
rapidly on a development distribution pre-release. These problems will
usually resolve themselves in a day or two. If the problem persists for
more than a few days let us know and we can look for a deeper problem.

[Bug 89269] Re: power.sh: wrong laptop_mode activation

2008-04-03 Thread Andrea Ratto
Finally something is moving.

fixing point ONE does not really help the whole powermanagement
subsytem, because there is still laptop-mode touching the disk
parameters.

What's most importat of this bug is that things should make sense. acpi-support
vs laptop-mode (vs powernowd). Which one touches what?
We can't have a disk standby timeout in laptop-mode.conf and another in
/etc/default/acpi-support.
Also hdparm -B which is causing the famouse HDD load cycling bug is called by
both of them. So I don't want to post 5 different bugs, for now.

I really think that canonical should put some money on this and get to be the
best distro for laptops. That is what i think it's best:
Rewrite/fork laptop-mode to take out all the functionalities not relative to
HDD powermanagement, call it something easier and give it a decent config file.
Hook it in the acpi-support scripts, so that it does not have to watch for
battery and other power related events. Ac get plugged in, we call xxx ac and
it parses its config file and sets timeouts and caching/mount options. Resuming
from standby? find if on ac or on battery and call it again... and so on.
Acpi-support does the transitions from power states, other tools do the
settings.

This would be just phase one. Then a daemon and some dbus communication
with gnome-power-manager could provide things like power profiles (a
profile is just a set of config files for the new laptop-mode and
powernowd, plus some settings for the screensaver); an administrative
application could help the user to set parameters. But these are just
ideas, for now laptop mode and its integration with acpi-support need
attention.

2008-04-03 Thread boucman

I might miss something obvious, but it seems OK to me...

the logs are flooded on my setup, and the display is correctly setup...
it block on OGL and window redraw is very slow, but I have two screens
with correct resolution working

2008-04-03 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
And happened again. This time no screen lock just a simple apt-get
update / upgrade. Then no X clients could be run. Again. .Xauthority was
owned by the root user! After chowin'ing back to my user everything
continued to work, it seems.

Re: [Nut-upsuser] [Bug 209001] [NEW] Nut no longer functions with belkin usb avr

2008-04-03 Thread Arnaud Quette
2008/4/3, Arjen de Korte [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
so there are chances that this has been backported in Testing /
   2.2.2-pre1 (released today).

No, it hasn't been backported as far as I can see, so this is something
that needs to be done for nut-2.2.2-pre2. Since we have active maintainers
for this driver, I didn't do this myself.

Can you (the bug reporters) grab this, call configure as per the
packaging/debian/rules, make and test from the build dir?

 That probably won't help (yet).

right, this has just been confirmed.

@Carlos, Andrey, Alexander, Jon: can one of you take care of
backporting this to Testing for -pre2?

thanks,
Arnaud

[Bug 190414] Re: Clocksource tsc unstable add 10 seconds to the boot time.

2008-04-03 Thread nappsoft
So here is some more information from my side. The system hung for more
than 5 minutes today. After that I stopped the boot-process and booted
with my self-compiled 2.6.24 kernel.

Here the last output:

scsi0: ata_piix
scsi1: ata_piix
ata1: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x1f0 ctl 0x3f6 bmdma 0x1810 irq 14
ata2: PATA max UDMA/100 cmd 0x170 ctl 0x376 bmdma 0x1818 irq 15

Have a look at my 2.6.24-Config (didn't spend time on optimizing it,
just wanted TuxOnIce-Support).

The bug is alive and kicking as of 2008-03-03 with 2.6.24-14-386.

last line comes after I pull the card (PCMCIA USB 2.0 card) out.

In terms of workaround, I would appreciate if someone finds a good
solution (disabling pcmciautils seems to invite breakage because it runs
as a service in several runlevels)
