[Bug 181188] Re: Open-iscsi causes machine to hang on reboot

2008-07-07 Thread kryanth
Can confirm this in hardy-heron (8.04LTS) -xen (2.6.24-19-xen) , with
the current packaged iscsi (2.0-865).

I rebuilt the kernel (necessary to get the build for open-iscsi
2.0-869.2 to work) - however I'm experiencing with being unable to
maintain sessions with the SAN ( MD3000i). It does fix the hangs
however. Looks like I'll have to build new kernel with 2.6.25, however
there doesnt seem to be any Ubuntu source for this, so would prefer not
to.

Whats the ETA for 2.6.25-xen and open-iscsi-2.0.869 in Hardy Heron? This
is a showstopper for me currently.

[Bug 74164] Re: Request ntp-servers by default

Indeed it is true - we don't need 'default ntp-servers xyz' in

used, as /etc/ntp.conf.dhcp won't be created. That's half the changes

Sebastian, yes, you're right. Removing the first line [Desktop]
eliminated the bug. Based on Antti's input, I can only guess that it
occurs somewhere in the upgrade process or soon after as a direct
result.

It's amazing that something as simple as [ and ] characters in the
.gtk-bookmarks file can crash every application using the Gnome file
chooser. This does not inspire confidence in open source...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 223238] Re: Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free nvidia-glx-new

2008-07-07 Thread Rob Lanphier
** Summary changed:

- Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript performance in Firefox 3 for Linux
+ Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free
nvidia-glx-new

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

  With Ubuntu 8.04

  Firefox 3.0 has extremely slow Ajax/Javascript performance (I'm not sure
- exactly what).
+ exactly what). Probably CSS related.

  #1 Gmail scrolls very slowly (compare this by switching gmail to HTML
  version at the bottom of inbox)

  #2 Javascript images open/close/transition extremely slow
  examples:
   http://www.shacknews.com/ (images near the top of page,
when transitioning, bring FF3.0 to its knees)
   http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/ssotd/#latest
 (images opening and switching to next one)
   http://www.transmissionbt.com/screenshots.php  (opening
and closing images are very choppy)

There are many more, those are just a few.

  I have both enabled and disabled Compiz but the problem is still there.
  I am not a web developer and can't pinpoint exactly what sort of code is
  causing the extreme slowness but I have tested it on multiple machines
  to make sure. I have compared it to my Windows XP dual boot box and the
  difference is night and day so it is definitely a Linux issue. Also on
  a Mac OS 10.4 machine its noticeably faster.

  This bug:   https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217580
  Is similar but only deals with Gmail, it is now known to be widespread issue.
 With performance this slow Firefox 3.0 beta should never have been the default
browser. Unless its just the few machines I've used of course.

[Bug 245425] Re: klibido description incorrect in Adept Manager

2008-07-07 Thread Scott Testerman
Update: I can now report that this behavior is present for other
packages, so this bug may apply to Adept instead of any particular
package. The behavior occurs even on a fresh and completely updated
installation.

Example:
package ttf-baekmuk in Adept:
dockapp to monitor memory/swap usages
WMMemMon is a program to monitor memory/swap usages. It is a dockapp that is
supported by X window managers such as Window Maker, AfterStep, BlackBox, and
Enlightenment.
The current memory usage is displaied as the outside pie-slices. The swap usage
is represented by the inside slices. It has an LCD look-alike user interface.
The back-light may be turned on/off by clicking the mouse button over the
appliacation. If the usage hits a certain threshold, an alarm-mode will alert
you by turning back-light on.

package ttf-baekmuk in apt-cache:
Description: Baekmuk series TrueType fonts
 This is a set of Korean TrueType fonts, which contains 4 font
 families.

[Bug 246170] [NEW] NetworkManager does not connect to wireless networks without Xorg

2008-07-07 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

When booting a computer without Xorg graphical interface (from a tty),
NetworkManager successfully setup ethernet devices with DHCP and the
network is available and working. However, it does not do the same with
wireless networks even if the good user is logged.

Steps to reproduce :
1. Prerequisites, A working wireless connexion correctly configured with
nm-applet, no wired connexion.
2. Alter Xorg /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to make sure that Xorg will fail after a
reboot, or simply remove gdm from init.d
3. Reboot your computer
4. Once you get to a tty, log yourself on.
5. Try to access the network (sudo apt-get update, ping google.ca).

Result:
Accessing the network won't work. However, it will work if you have a ethernet
cable plugged.

This might be because NetworkManager have no way to access gnome-keyring
to gain access to wireless keys without a graphical interface, I don't
know..

[Bug 223238] Re: Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free nvidia-glx-new

2008-07-07 Thread Rob Lanphier
I spent the better part of an afternoon fighting this problem (or one
much like it) on my laptop. Free nv driver works, but the restricted
driver causes really obnoxious stalls, to the point where the app dims
out multiple times for several seconds on some pages.

Page which demonstrates the behavior most severely (ironically):
http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2008/02/firefox-3-ultimate-feature-performance/

I saved a local copy of the CSS, and did a binary search to find the offending
CSS.  Here it is:
#page {
background: url(images/structure/backgroundColumns.png) repeat-y;
background-position: 3px;
margin-top: 50px;
width: 970px;
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
border: 1px solid #D9D9D9;
z-index: 10;
}

Readding pretty much anything on the #page entity causes rendering
stalls. I started readding individual lines from this chunk, but there
didn't seem to be one particular culprit. It seems that most/all of
these lines contribute to the sluggishness somehow, to varying degrees.

2008-07-07 Thread superphysics
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 212028 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212028

I saw the other two results with keywords [xubuntu, windows, partitions,
mount]. One of the two was this one. The reason I still filed this as a new
bug was because that referred to a beta, that too with a LiveCD. Moreover,
that was registered under the 'exo' package, while for me, it was a case of
installing it from a running, fully functional Ubuntu system. I thought the
two dynamics might be different.

If it still indeed is a duplicate, then it is my mistake.
In that case, shouldn't a pre-release bug have been fixed by now?

[Bug 243903] Re: autohide bug in kicker

2008-07-07 Thread Flink Del Dinky
I found the problem, it was the setting to raise kicker when it touches

expected. Not sure what happened to make kicker stop working in the
first place though. I hadn't changed any settings in the panel menu
from when it was working to when it wasn't working. I'm assuming the
option to raise the panel when it touches the edge of the screen some
how got selected, anyway that option is not fully compatible with
autohide

[Bug 246172] [NEW] Hardy : suspend and hibernate fail on resume.

2008-07-07 Thread roger64
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Hardy : problem with suspend and hibernate on a Toshiba laptop.

The arrival of pm-utils, included with Hardy, has been for my computer a
disaster. I use Hardy 8.04.1
I own a laptop Toshiba A80, with Pentium M and Intel 915 (I think it's a i810
driver) and Centrino. No fancy cards.
Suspend and hibernate have been working with Dapper, Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy.
I still keep, if need be, a full disk image of my Gutsy.

Hardy is working perfectly well except for these following pm-utils
related matters .

- using button Arrêter (Stop), shutdown nearly completes. Arrived
nearly at the end, the process hangs. I have to use Ctrl Alt Del two
times to stop my computer.

- using button Mettre en veille (suspend to RAM) suspend the computer
like usual. But I cannot resume : all I get is a black screen and a
blinking cursor. I need to start again by hard reset.

- The same happens for button Hiberner (hibernate) where it's just
impossible to resume and I have to start again the computer.

- When using the button redemarrer (start again), it dutifully stops
but cannot start again by its own.

To finish, I do not know if it's related, when starting the computer I
have a brand new error message telling me Intel_rng : FWH not
detected. A bug of this kind had been reorted before but I saw no
solution. It's not a hardware failure because when I install again
Gutsy, this message does not appear. It's related to Hardy.

I am ready to give you all my help. I know for experience that suspend
and hibernate can work pretty well on my computer. I still have a
working XP (dual boot) for this matter.

[Bug 215614] Re: Evolution Exchange unreliability in Hardy

2008-07-07 Thread Tim Richardson
It's completely unusable for me. With an exchange account enabled, I get an
Evolution freeze within seconds. even when I am replying to an email from my
imap account. I get nothing very useful from console output if I run it from a
shell. It doesn't crash, it just freezes.
Disabling the exchange account immediately brings back a stable Evolution.
I followed the clean install instructions above, and I did a reinstall of
Exchange, but it made no difference. I have all the hardy repositories
installed, updates and proposed updates. I will try making a new user to see if
that helps.

These are the versions I'm using:
- Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1
- gnome-phone-manager: 0.40-3
- gnokii: 0.6.22.dfsg-3

This is my ~/.gnokiirc:

[global]
port = /dev/ttyACM0
model = AT
initlength = default
connection = serial
use_locking = yes
serial_baudrate = 19200
smsc_timeout = 10
[xgnokii]
allow_breakage = 0
[gnokiid]
bindir = /usr/sbin/
[connect_script]
TELEPHONE = 12345678
[disconnect_script]
[logging]
debug = off
rlpdebug = off
xdebug = off

gnokii can identify my phone connection successfully:

$ gnokii --identify
GNOKII Version 0.6.22
IMEI : snipped
Manufacturer : Sony Ericsson
Model: AAD-3022041-BV
Product name : AAD-3022041-BV
Revision : R1KG001 070418 2238

I can even successfully send SMS via gnokii command line:

echo hello world | gnokii --sendsms +number -r

Somehow gnome-phone-manager just doesn't work. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

[Bug 246067] Re: Kernel panic during boot after upgrading to kernel 2.6.26.3-generic

2008-07-07 Thread Michael Lok
I'm having the same problem as well. Hardy as host (Kubuntu,
2.6.24-19-generic) and Intrepid Alpha1 on VirtualBox 1.62. In addition
to getting the Attempted to kill the idle task! message, I'm also
getting: Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.
Kernel panic occurs when booting with 2.6.26-3. 2.6.26-2 works once in
a while.

[Bug 246175] [NEW] cpu frequency scaling causes multiple vcpu guests to panic

2008-07-07 Thread Steven Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kvm

As soon as I turned on cpu frequency scaling, one of my guest domains
that was using multiple vcpus did a kernel panic.

The dmesg on the host server had repeated lines of this:
[1041427.963898] vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin
[1041427.963900] vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin
[1041427.963902] vcpu not ready for apic_round_robin

The Kernel panic on the guest said:
smp_apic_timer_interrupt...
apic_timer_interrupt...
EIP:  insert_work
Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.

I put all the guest domains to only use a single vcpu, and left the cpu
frequency scaling on at the host server. This appeared to avoid the
issue for the time being.

Patch header:

hnb (1.9.18-4) * Fix broken cursor. This bug was introduced with the previous
  patch which made all callbacks return void* and made hnb

The minor bug introduced by Ubuntu I talked about in the patch header is

[Bug 246177] [NEW] gnumeric help on plot log scale unclear

2008-07-07 Thread Francesco Potortì
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnumeric-doc

In gnumeric 1.7.11, the Minor ticks property of an axis has a meaning that
depends on the type of scale:
- for linear scale, the property indicates the distance between minor ticks
- for log scale, the property indicates the number of minor ticks in a decade

The Major ticks means:
- for linear scale, the distance between major ticks
- for log scale, the number of decades between two major ticks

for both minor and major ticks in log scale, the number should be a
positive integer.

None of this info is written in the manual, albeit it should.

[Bug 236051] Re: main inclusion review for openbabel

2008-07-07 Thread Martin Pitt
Geoff, thanks for the follow-up! Seems that we should get 2.2.0-final
into Intrepid (we have beta5 at the moment). Jonathan, any chance you
could test the 2.2.0-1 from Debian experimental? If it works, we should
sync it over.

I do consider it security sensitive in a way that such file formats are
often taken from unknown third-party sources. Thus this provides the
classical vector of putting a crafted .cml (or other format) somewhere
and luring people to open it, which would then run arbitrary code on
their systems. Of course our current measures of SSP, ASLR, and
FORTIFY_SOURCE make this hard to do, but a general source code review
still can't hurt.

Thanks, Martin

[Bug 204133] Re: wubi install unusable - Buffer I/O error on device loop0

2008-07-07 Thread Martin Pitt
Thanks, Agostino and Colin. Some questions:

 * Was this ntfs-3g patch sent/ack'ed upstream? Is it fixed in Intrepid
already?

 * What is the rationale for adding the change to ntfs-3g and dropping
the equivalent sysctl call in lupin? Is the hack in lupin insufficient
to fix the problem? I need to understand why we need to make this
shift in the hardy stable release (it's certainly good to clean up
hacks in Intrepid, of course)

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2008-07-07 Thread jnygaard
I also caved in and inserted a new pci-card with a USB 2.0 controller
and some ports.

Two really surprising things happened: First, I would have thought it
necessarry to disable the onboard (motherboard) USB controller, since
that was the one not working with ehci_hcd. (I base this on the fact
that I got the reset-errors even without using any USB devices
connected to the ports, as if the host controller itself had
problems...) This was not correct, even when this is enabled and
ehci_hcd now loaded, everything works without a glitch, under high
stress!

Second, I thought the onboard (motherboard) USB controller/ports would
be useless after disabling the controller in BIOS for these. The really
strange thing is that now (since I did not need to disable USB in BIOS I
tested this) the onboard USB ports suddenly work at full speed also. I
simply do not understand how this can be. It is as if the mere presence
of the new controller causes the problem to go away...

2008-07-07 Thread Konrads Smelkovs
HI,

I removed the gnome-vfs-obexftp and behaviour remains the same.

Error message is: There was an error copying the file into
obex://[00:18:13:5E:22:E9]/Phone%20memory.
Operation not supported by backend. Using kbluetooth i can merrily transfer
files, so bluetooth transfer as such works.

[Bug 246182] [NEW] kpdf crashes when opening specific pdf

When I open the attached pdf with kpdf or the konqueror, kpdf diplays
the first page and then crashes. It seems to be a bug specific to the
ubuntu version, because I already reported it to bugs.kde.org, but it
seems to work for them. This is part of the reply I got:

 --- Additional Comments From tsdgeos terra es 2008-07-02 20:04 ---
  I'm marking this as worksforme because:
  * Crashes here on kpdf provided by ubuntu 8.04
  * Works here on selfcompiled kpdf
  * works here on selfcompiled okular
  * ubuntu heavily patches kpdf

 So you should really report to them.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-07-07 Thread ceg
** Description changed:

  This is not a support forum. Please do not use it as such (even though
  it has been used as such already).

  You can scan through the bug for links to the Ubuntu forums where many,
  many different questions have been asked, answered, and re-answered.
- The temporary workaround is just below, but you may need to use '254',
- or a bit lower, as opposed to '255'. If HD temperature gets high, you
- may want to set it all the way down to 200 or so. ~1 click every
- 2.5-3 minutes is fine.
+ The temporary workaround is just below.

  See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement for an overview about what
  is involved and for a remedy.

- Temporary workaround:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695/comments/14
- A more extensive description of the workaround:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=591503
- Note: Some disks are unresponsive to having their APM changed by hdparm, and
therefore the workaround doesn't work. It would be a good idea, in such cases,
to disable APM in the BIOS if possible.

  Following is a summary of the issue:
- It is confirmed that some systems are seeing an unusually high number of
load/unload cycles on their hard disks, as evidenced by smartctl. It was
originally surmised that this was related to laptop-mode being enabled, but
this affects systems *regardless* of whether or not laptop-mode has been
enabled. In fact, aggressive APM is not a bad idea while a system is not on
AC, as that system is much more likely to encounter a physical impact. But
unfortunately, the heads are only parked for a very short period of time,
making impact protection much less effective (and wearing out the drive as
well).
+ It is confirmed that some systems are seeing an unusually high number of

+ disabled. In fact, aggressive APM is not a bad idea while a system is
+ not on AC, as that system is much more likely to encounter a physical
+ impact.
+
+ This is due to disk APM settings that let the heads park or disk spin
+ down after an idle period that is shorter than the regular disk access
+ patterns of the OS.
+
+ Then, the heads are only parked for a very short period of time and
+ almost imediately loaded again. Making impact protection much
+ ineffective and wearing out the drive.
+
+ It can happen when the disk asumes aggressive APM settings (like many
+ laptop disks) and the OS does not take care to set the APM settings
+ accordingly to its current disk access pattern.

  This problem has been confirmed in Ubuntu as well as in other
  distributions and on MacOS X and Windows.

  Symptoms of this bug are:
  * Frequent HD clicks -- more than one per 3 minutes while idle, louder than
the typical access sounds. Often more than twice per minute. On some disks,
the click is very quiet
  * Rapidly Increasing Load_Cycle_Count as displayed in the final number in
sudo smartctl -a /dev/hda | grep Load_Cycle_Count (where /dev/hda is replaced
with your own hard disk device)
  * Early hard disk failure never stay parked, due to very frequent disk
activity. Thus this cycle occurs often, thus wearing out the drive, and any
comparative benefit is negligible (whereas, if the-- some disks are cut down to
less than a year of actual uptime.

- The problem is only present due to the existence of *all three* of the
following factors:
+ The problem is only present due to the existence of *all four* of the
following factors:
  * Hardware is set (default or otherwise) to aggressive power management,
causing heads to park. (default behaviour of many drives and often the only
user available type of power management)
  * Disk is touched often, causing heads to unpark. (default behaviour of many
distributions)
  * Drives are spec'd to a limited number of these cycles. (600,000 is the
most common, although some may be spec'd higher or lower).
+ * The OS not setting disk APM variables according to current disk access
pattern.

  Reasonable Limits / Criteria for a fix:
  * There should be fewer than ~15 load cycles per hour, except during heavy
usage while on battery.
  * This provides a life expectancy of over four years, which is reasonable for
a hard disk.

  Temporary Workaround:
  * Follow the above link.

  Permanent Fix:
- * Obtain utility from your hard drive manufacturer to change the head parking
time if available.
+ * Obtain utility from your hard drive manufacturer to change the default head
parking time if available.
+ * Contrlolling the APM variables of hard drives according to the current disk
access pattern. (i.e. chunked into blocks with minutes of idle time
(disk-idleing or laptop_mode) or continous disk access every x seconds
expecting the disks to stay up all the time.)

[Bug 246185] [NEW] Unlock Private Key dialog mysteriously refers to an application

2008-07-07 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

Ubuntu 8.04, all updates installed

Several times after I log in, an Unlock Private Key dialog pops up.
The dialog says something like An application is trying to access the
private key 'id_rsa', but it is locked, and asks me to enter my
passphrase. (I'm not sure of the exact wording, because while this
dialog I can focus other windows but not type into them, and nor am I
allowed to take a screenshot.)

This question is useless, because it doesn't identify the application
that wants to access my key. It should gave the .desktop name of the
application if there is one, or the name of the binary otherwise.

[Bug 66760] Re: palette indexes in eft-theme.c should not be prefixed with 0x

2008-07-07 Thread Colin Watson
The attached branch is surely wrong. For example, it changes 0x156 to
156. Those are different numbers! (As such, the statement in the bug
report that they are short integers from 0 to 255 is also incorrect.)
Did you test this change? Also, please use UNRELEASED in the changelog
rather than a distribution name when you aren't the one who's going to
be making the upload, to reduce confusion.

It's probably OK in principle to make this change since it brings
usplash's example theme into line with e.g. usplash-theme-ubuntu.

[Bug 246189] [NEW] Nautilus can't open usb flash drive

2008-07-07 Thread Ken Tindle
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hardy Heron, Nautilus 2.22.3

When inserting a USB flash drive (formatted vfat) the USB drive icon
appears in Places|Computer.

Double-clicking this yields the generic Nautilus Unable to mount
location - Can't mount file dialog.

Putting gnome-mount -v -b -d /dev/sdc1 into a Terminal yields happy
messages and a mounted device.

Double-clicking on the USB drive icon still yields the error dialog.

Removing the flash drive (after a umount) causes the USB drive icon to
disappear.

So, I can use the drive at the command line.  No graphical interface;
