[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-07-10 Thread Alexander Dietrich
I have created a patch for the initramfs-tools script as suggested by
Ken in this comment:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mdadm/+bug/120375/comments/47

In order to apply it (as root), cd /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts,
patch initramfs-mdadm-assemble-scan.patch, then update-initramfs
-u.

With an initrd patched in this manner, I was able to disconnect either
of my harddrives and still boot my server without manual intervention.
The patch does not address the generous wait for the missing harddrive,
so give it some time.

The Stable Release Update process for an Long Term Support release
such as Hardy involves a bit a work and justification on our end in
order to roll this out. See:

In the mean time, there's an unofficial, though usable, php-5.2.6

2008-07-10 Thread spinkham
I'm sorry for whining to the people who are subscribed to and care about this
bug, but over 2 months since the release of a package with 3 claimed remotely
exploitable code injection bugs makes me VERY hesitant to ever recommend Ubuntu
for server use ever again.
By this time even the slow moving redhat has updated and Ubuntu doesn't even
have a package in -proposed.
It seems all the hard work was completed over a month ago, and sits in Tormod
Volden PPA, with no action since.
As far as I can tell, everything else is political will.
If there is no more forward, I will have to start explaining to the world how
broken Ubuntu's security updating strategy is.
I would prefer to put my effort in something more useful then being the squeaky
wheel, and will take all suggestions of how I can help.
I prefer action over complaining any day ;-)

[Bug 227848] Re: boot order wrong for iscsi

2008-07-10 Thread Dewi
Having similar major problems utilizing iSCSI effectively with Heron. I have
changed the Boot script order in rcS.d so iSCSI is now S44 instead of S25 (
starts iscsi AFTER networking ) and I now have iSCSI drives available to the
system. However, it's proving difficult to get the boot order right for
initiation and mounting of iSCSI drives to be automatic and effective as part
of the boot process.
For example, if we want to hold service data on SAN iSCSI drives ( e.g. SAMBA
file shares, LDAP or MySQL databases) we need to have the iSCSI drives fully
mounted and available at the service startup scripts kick in. Currently with
the default setup of iSCSI, this does not happen.
Continuing to investigate and experiment , but any further tips to effectively
get iSCSI usable as a system drive would be appreciated.

[Bug 227464] Re: Please roll out security fixes from PHP 5.2.6

2008-07-10 Thread Tormod Volden
I agree with spinkham. It is a shame that a security issue in a main
package (and php5 is pretty prominent when it comes to servers) has a
tested debdiff sitting untouched for 5 weeks. Can't blame Kees and his
two other colleagues - they have certainly been busy - but yes, there
are only 3 (three) persons in the ubuntu-security team. Is that size
sane for a major Linux distro, which advertises its Server Edition with
all that buzz? Sorry, I should probably ask this somewhere else.

[Bug 246558] Re: ssh's init script should generate host keys if they're missing

2008-07-10 Thread Björn Torkelsson
Well. It complains that it can't find any hostkeys when started (and
when logging in) but it works perfectly well without hostkeys when using
GSSAPI. As we are only allowing GSSAPI on most of our machines there is
really no need for the hostkey as the host authenticity is established
using the GSSAPI keytab. Actually, getting the question about
authenticity and adding it to know_hosts is bogus as the host is
validated by other means and the only allowed mechanism are gssapi-keyex
are gssapi-with-mic which are not using the hostkeys and thus the login
will fail anyway if you don't have any valid kerberos/gssapi key, but
not until you have accepted the hostkey. If you have a valid key you
don't get the question about host authenticity.

In my opinion ssh should be patched not requiring hostkeys (when using
only GSSAPI), instead of automatically generating hostkeys.

Yes I think the keys are generated on installation, but you can always
deleted them if you don't need them or if you don't want to share them,
which is what this bug is about.

sshd_config attached used together with the following ssh-config:

   ForwardX11 yes
   GSSAPIKeyExchange yes
   GSSAPIAuthentication yes
   GSSAPIDelegateCredentials yes
   PreferredAuthentications gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic
   Protocol 2
   Cipher blowfish
   SendEnv LANG LC_*
   StrictHostKeyChecking ask
   HashKnownHosts no

I have the same file/folder problem with Nautilus in Hardy. Files will
copy from the NAS but folders will not.

I installed the Dolphin file manager and it has no problem with the

not Samba.

Perhaps using Dolphin or another file manager will help people until the

[Bug 227848] Re: boot order wrong for iscsi

2008-07-10 Thread Dewi
I have a fairly consistent boot process now that mounts iSCSI drives. Here are
the changes I made to the default init scripts symlinks order:
rc0.d : changed K25open-iscsi to K44open-icsi
rc6.d: changed K25open-iscsi to K44open-iscsi
rcS.d: Changed S40networking to S23networking

in /etc/init.d, I added a sleep 10 as the last statement of the start
block of code in open-iscsi.

this delays the boot process a bit, but allows the iSCSI disks to
initialize fully before the fsmount stuff kicks in.

[Bug 246475] Re: HP LaserJet P1006 Printer Unable to Print

 Thanks for your report.
Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
This printer requires the foo2xqx driver from http://foo2xqx.rkkda.com/which
is not included into Ubuntu, so you will have to manually install it.
Did you install the PPD from openprinting.org or was it included into
 Ubuntu?

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

This was indeed very unpleasant bug to discover after spending money to

hope I get it booting correctly with some instructions given here.
Otherwise I guess I'm forced to change distribution or then feel that it
was money wasted building raid. :(

[Bug 227180] Re: scim problem under kubuntu hardy (kde 3.5.9)

2008-07-10 Thread David Nemeskey
It seems that katapult does not work with the static event flow. Please do the
following:
1. vi (or your favourite text editor) ~/.scim/config
2. find the line /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic = false
3. change false to true (without the quotation marks)
4. save the file
5. make it read-only: chmod -w ~/.scim/config
6. restart X (ctrl-alt-backspace)

Step 5 is necessary because if the file is not read-only, sometimes the system
(maybe the scim configuration panel) changes the setting back to false.
You can repeat these steps 1-4 for the /etc/scim/config file, which, if I
understood correctly, is the template for the config files in the users'
directories. You have to be root to do that, though.

Honestly, I have no idea why the event flow is not dynamic (true) by
default, as static has all kinds of problems. Input sometimes freezes in
applications, etc. I don't understand why do the user have to go to the
console and do the im-switch-ing manually either...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. What you submitted is not really a bug, or a problem in
the current implementation of the software, but rather a feature
request. Ubuntu has a site for collecting new ideas just like this and I
encourage you to submit to. Please visit http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/

[Bug 245480] Re: ldtp 1.1.0-1 is not building in Intrepid

2008-07-10 Thread Daniel Holbach
Just a few things:
 - the change to Standards-Version: 3.8.0.1 is not really necessary, first of
all it's a change we will have to merge the next time we merge from Debian and
it has no impact for our users. Also the first three digits are enough, the
fourth is just about orthographical changes.
 - debian/changelog mentions a New upstream release, which is not true in
this case
 - could you add a (LP: #245480) to debian/changelog - that will automatically
close the bug report on upload.

Other than that - the patch looks good.

[Bug 217846] Re: Slow suspend/resume in Hardy

2008-07-10 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Here the /etc/network/interfaces is not involved in slow resume after
suspend to RAM, so the proposed workaround doesn't help.

When resuming my Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi, my hard disk always works like
crazy for at least 1 minute before I at least get the screen backlight
to light again, and still more before I eventually get the screensaver
unlock prompt. After resumed I notice the swap is highly used (at least
400 MB) even if it was almost empty when I suspended.

The machine has 1 GB RAM and 2 GB swap, and I have no clue about why it
happens only with this laptop : I have several Kubuntu Hardy laptops,
and only this one shows such a resume behaviour, the fastest one being a
Dell XPS M1330 on which resuming is really completely intantaneous.

[Bug 247180] [NEW] [Hardy] Kubuntu live CD installer can't install on unformatted LVM volumes

2008-07-10 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I usuall install Kubuntu over LVM (possibly encrypted) using the live
CD, because I find creating the LVM manually (would be nice if the live
CD could include the lvm2 and cryptsetup packages, they're rather small
and it would save me to aptitude install them each time and have to
chroot to finish the install on the destination HD to add lvm2 again...)
then performing a live CD install is faster and easier rather than
using the alternate CD, so I first manually create the LVM and volumes
and then install on it doing a normal live CD install.

I've found out that the Kubuntu live CD installer manual partitioning
tool cannot install on LVM volumes (it doesn't properly recognize them)
if they haven't been previously mke2fs'ed or mkswap'ped, but it's OK if
they have been.

Would be nice if the partitioning tool could recognized LVM volumes even
if not populated with a filesystem (as it will mkfs them later on
anyway)...

[Bug 247034] Re: Blank screen with compiz activated

2008-07-10 Thread Connor Imes
I have this problem on my ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 which is caused by
compiz loading with gnome. I have been hitting ALT+F2 then typing in
metacity --replace, then hitting enter (all without seeing what's
happening). That just runs that command in a terminal which switches
from compiz to metacity.

I think we are waiting for some drivers to go through (and not just for
ATI). Here is a forum post with a similar problem -

[Bug 247071] Re: Hardy freezes on EPIA Via when switching screens

2008-07-10 Thread Brian Candler
Digging around some more, it seems I *do* have acceleration enabled.

$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI CastleRock (CLE266) 20060710 x86/MMX/SSE

$ dpkg-query -l | egrep -i '(chrome|via display)'
ii libchromexvmc1 1:0.2.901-0ubuntu4
XvMC Libraries used by the Openchrome VIA dr
ii libchromexvmcpro1 1:0.2.901-0ubuntu4
XvMC Pro Libraries used by the Openchrome VI
ii xserver-xorg-video-openchrome 1:0.2.901-0ubuntu4
   X.Org X server -- VIA display driver
ii xserver-xorg-video-via 1:0.2.2-5
   X.Org X server -- VIA display driver

I've also attached Xorg.0.log, there are a number of CHROME(0) messages
in there.

I can't see any hints relating to the crashes though:

[Bug 165236] Re: Missing dependency from ktechlab to gputil

2008-07-10 Thread Daniel Holbach
As there's no justification why it should be a strict Depends, I'd
rather close the bug. Also Recommends are now installed by default.

[Bug 243991] Re: bugs and fixes to play 3d games on i810 i815

2008-07-10 Thread unggnu
After nailing down the problem with this procedure we can move it
upstream to the Intel developers so the issue hopefully gets fixed in
the newer driver soon.
