[Bug 159357] Re: Improper format of Kerberos configuration file

2008-07-14 Thread Russ Allbery
This is fixed in the 1.6.dfsg.3-1 Debian release:

  * If krb5-config/default_realm isn't set, use EXAMPLE.COM as the realm
so that the kdc.conf will at least be syntactically valid (but will
still require editing). (Closes: #474741)

I'm not sure when it changed, but the current code matches the
documentation. noaddresses is the correct option, and the default is
true.

[Bug 44402] Re: krb5-admin-server fails during install

2008-07-14 Thread Russ Allbery
The package is behaving as intended from my perspective. I don't think
it's sane to automatically create a new realm on package installation.
You may want to do something else, like initialize from an existing
realm or create a realm that doesn't match the local realm for testing.
In fact, given the nature of KDCs, wanting to do something more cautious
is I think more likely than not.

[Bug 116745] Re: kerberos requires users to list themselves in .k5login

2008-07-14 Thread Russ Allbery
This is the intended behavior of Kerberos. So far as I know, it has
always worked this way. I have never seen logins succeed if you have an
empty .k5login file. I suspect something else was going on when you
thought this used to work (such as having the .k5login file not be
readable for some reason).

It would break many systems to have an empty .k5login file still permit
logins by principals that happen to match the local account name.

[Bug 45234] Re: Missing privilege separation directory: /var/run/sshd

2008-07-14 Thread Christian
rc.local, bootmisc.sh - either way, it's seems trivial enough to me (yet
I managed to get my patch wrong, aaargh!) and I hope this will be fixed
soon.

Btw, Debian had this fixed in 4.3p2-2 (05/2006) where they were
referencing the LP bug and #453285 (when starting sshd from inetd) has
been fixed with 4.7p1-1 (12/2007).

Thanks,

[Bug 243616] Re: KDE4.1 - no longer starts

2008-07-14 Thread Yuriy Kozlov
Reuben, it is useful to test if bugs you report for KDE 4.0 are fixed in
KDE 4.1 since the latter will be in Intrepid and does already fix many
problems. I recommend you use project neon kde-nightly packages to do
this, as you can install those alongside your KDE 4.0.

For KDE 4.1, although it is now included with Kubuntu Intrepid alphas,
for now it would be most effective to report bugs directly to
bugs.kde.org. Thank you for testing and reporting your problems!

For your compositing issue, try searching and/or asking on
ubuntuforums.org or kubuntuforums.net or the kubuntu-users mailing list
for help getting it working. Though FWIW, desktop effects work with
nvidia-glx-new without any tweaking on both my systems.

As to this bug, I don't think XGL is a supported configuration and since
it's a beta, you may need to remove your .kde4 (back up your old one ;)
) to get it working again. If it starts for you without XGL and with a
new .kde4, I think this should be closed.

2008-07-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have a similar problem. I am using Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell D610. I get
the message

/com/redhat/dhcp/eth1 for sub-path eth1.dbus.get.domain_name

Jul 14 17:01:55 PJ dhcdbd: message_handler: message handler not found under
/com/redhat/dhcp/eth1 for sub-path eth1.dbus.get.interface_mtu

I get a lot of segfault errors associated with Firefox.

I notice a number of things about my PC in the last month or so...this
was not happening when I first starting Ubuntu in May.

1. the screen goes mometarily blank occasionally.nothing untoward
happens and normal service is resumed within a second or two.

2. In the past couple of days, both Firefox and Thunderbird hang...Skype
and Pidgin seem to continue OK as I can send messages..but I cannot
update pages in FF nor my inbox in Thunderbird.

I have to reboot my machine and my router to clear the fault.

[Bug 248277] Re: Gnome as a system

2008-07-14 Thread mcas
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Please add your ubuntu version.
Thanks!

[Bug 248010] Re: Update manager is extremely problematic - had to cycle power to kill it

2008-07-14 Thread Parthan
BB,

Sorry if you couldn't get what Gaurish was asking for. We want to ensure
that update-manager is indeed consuming system resources. For this, you
can first check off Automatic Updates option in
SystemAdministrationSoftware sourcesUpdates Tab. Hence, update
manager wont run at startup. Now open a terminal, run top/htop. Open
another terminal and update-manager. Now watch the top/htop output to
see how much does the update-manager utilize system resources. Hope that
helps? Please feel free to ask if you have any problem :)

[Bug 238261] Re: gedit crash on save as

2008-07-14 Thread John Cromie
I can't agree with you Sebastien, for two reasons.

First, I can assure you that the incorrect text in .gtk-bookmarks was
created somewhere in the normal use/upgrade of Ubuntu. Neither the end
user nor myself even knew of the existence of this file. I certainly did
not edit it (until directed to do so as part of the debugging process),
and the 80 year old user does not know how to display dot files, much
less edit them. There are no other users of this machine. So this bug
was created by the software on its own.

Second, the bug has a massive impact - crashing all applications that
use the Gnome file chooser, and that includes nearly everything an
ordinary desktop user uses by default.

frustration I don't mean to sound rude, but this is no way to get
Ubuntu accepted as anything other than a geek's tinker-toy. I really
thought that the open source community (and especially the Ubuntu
community) had higher ideals than this. Please, I'm not trying to stand
back and throw stones. I'll do everything I can to help solve this bug
and popularise OSS, but not if the community doesn't take bugs like this
seriously. My company has a large Windows installed base across many
companies. I battle daily to get them to take OSS seriously. Now it
sounds like I have to battle the OSS community to take their user
experiences seriously. /frustration

[Bug 227531] Re: pam_krb5 should use syslog with facility LOG_AUTH

2008-07-14 Thread Russ Allbery
Er, Debian sid most certainly has not moved to Heimdal for libpam-krb5.
What made you think that we had?

I wish you'd sent me this patch instead of just filing it into the
Ubuntu bug tracking system, since I don't get copies of the bugs filed
here. If you had, it would have made it into 3.11; now it will have to
wait for 3.12.

Surely this should be LOG_AUTHPRIV and not LOG_AUTH, no?

[Bug 116745] Re: kerberos requires users to list themselves in .k5login

2008-07-14 Thread Russ Allbery
This is the intended behavior of Kerberos. So far as I know, it has
always worked this way. I have never seen logins succeed if you have an
empty .k5login file. I suspect something else was going on when you
thought this used to work (such as having the .k5login file not be
readable for some reason).

It would break many systems to have an empty .k5login file still permit
logins by principals that happen to match the local account name.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-07-14 Thread Gareth Williams
Not sure if this bug is going down a different track from its
'duplicate' 241578?

Just a hint that 241578, as described, worked absolutely fine in the LTS
release of Hardy and stopped working after a specific automatic update.
It might be worth looking at the changes made in that update - provide that
they are not massively different of course.

I have put this message here in case 241578 is no longer being looked
at.

[Bug 119433] Re: When I play a video, I get a green screen

2008-07-14 Thread Harry Skelton
FIXED:
Problem is two fold. First do the following to get the correct drivers:

...do this first...
sudo apt-get install totem
...then...
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
...then...
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

This should fit the bill and get your DVD player to read all DVD's.

The second problem is my controller card. An old Intel on the MB (OLD Compaq
machine).
Fix this with:

(as root or sudo it...)

vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Replace the Device section with: (assuming generic Kubuntu install)

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
# Driver i810
Driver intel
# BusID PCI:0:2:0
Option VideoRam 65536
Option CacheLines 1980
Option LinearAlloc 8160
EndSection

Although all you need really is the options to solve BadAlloc messages
and slow/stutters of the DVD

Then:

sudo apt-get install vlc

VLC works the best as a player.
Xine works but you have to tweak the settings a bit.
MPlayer uses xine, thus teaks.
Dragon Player work well - some interlace.
Totem works very well.

Enjoy.

Work-around posted. Should solve most issues.
Package still needs fixed to account for memory errors and playback.
Need to add script to add Option items in xorg.conf. If only through the

2008-07-14 Thread Andy Stanford-Clark
I was installing libdvdcss using these instructions...
from here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=85097
wget
http://ftp.yi.se/pub/software/videolan/libdvdcss/1.2.8/deb/libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1_i386.deb
 -c
wget
http://ftp.yi.se/pub/software/videolan/libdvdcss/1.2.8/deb/libdvdcss2-dev_1.2.8-1_i386.deb
 -c
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

at some point in this, it said it couldn't install raop-play, and stopped the
installation.
(this was probably because I had already installed raop-play previously)

Then the Update Manager icon on the top right icon bar turned to a stop sign
(white bar on red circle), so I clicked it, and it said a partial installation
had happened, and would I like it to clean up. Said yes.
Then it said would I like it to delete the things it had cleaned up... said yes
(probably my big mistake, but seemed reasonable at the time!).
It then chugged away for several minutes (was getting a bit suspicious).

When it finally completed, Lotus Notes had been uninstalled (that had
been installed somewhat manually), and the Applications menu just gave
the few little white pixels in the left corner that happens when there's
no applications menu.

I have attached the ~/.config/menus/applications.menu and the
/etc/xdg/applications.menu that I was left with after this.

I read somewhere that deleting ~/.config/menus/applications.menu makes
System-Preferences-Main Menu (alacarte) create a new one, so I tried
that, but it did nothing..

[Bug 245828] Re: Please merge xournal 0.4.2.1-0.1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-07-14 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
This looks like a merge to me and your patch on first glance doesn't
look too bad either except for following line in your changelog entry
under remaining Ubuntu changes : - Add and install upstream
.desktop file. This is incorrect as neither Ubuntu nor Debian *add*
upstream's .desktop file (it is shipped in the source tarball) and
Debian installs the upstream .desktop file just like us.

Please fix your debdiff and resubscribe u-u-s.

[Bug 242472] Re: Insufficient space on media when direct copying to blank CD

2008-07-14 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
I'm confirming this bug, because noticed this error message on my system too,
problem isn't in hard disk space, but in calculation of CD-R (media) space -
error message is not enough disc space on media.
AFAIK brasero 0.7 wrongly calculates size of audio CD before burning, I've meet
with this bug during creation of Audio CD Project - Brasero displays that
audio disk should fit in 700 MB CD during creation of Audio Project (when I
added wav files), but I got error message not enough disc space on media when
I tried to burn that Audio Project. I've removed one song from the project
and then Brasero burned Audio CD and didn't displayed error message.
I think we should if this bug exist in latest Brasero stable version - 0.8.0,
AFAIK nobody will fix problems in old stable branch - 0.7

[Bug 229169] Re: hardy live cd: ntp support is not installed, after installing it, it still wants to be installed

2008-07-14 Thread Hew
ntp actually installs, and the correct behaviour is shown once time
date settings are reopened, so marking as an issue with gnome-system-
tools instead.

Present with gnome-system-tools/intrepid uptodate 2.22.0-1ubuntu1

** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: ntp = gnome-system-tools
   Importance: Undecided = Low

** Summary changed:

- hardy live cd: ntp support is not installed, after installing it, it still
wants to be installed
+ ntp support appears not to be installed after installing through Time Date
settings

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ntpdate

I am using the hardy live cd at the moment, in the time and date
settings, if I set configuration to 'keep synchronized with internet
servers' it requests that ntp support be installed, after clicking
install, the icon spins around for a bit, and we're back to square one.
Basically it doesn't seam to be able to install ntp support.
+
+ ntp is actually installed, so this appears to be a bug in Time Date
+ settings itself.
+
+ WORKAROUND:
+
+ Reopen Time Date settings.

[Bug 247811] Re: Applications menu content got erased

2008-07-14 Thread Andy Stanford-Clark
that was what cause the alacarte error I listed above.

Copying in an applications.menu from a friend (also on Hardy) didn't
help either (applications menu was still empty). This did start in
alacarte, but it just had templates for the main folders - nothing in
them, so I'd have had to repopulate the entire menu by hand.

I hope that gives you some more clues - I realise this is a weird one,
and I have no real idea how to reproduce it.

[Bug 243716] Re: can't upload data without root priviliges

2008-07-14 Thread Frederik Elwert
In the meanwhile, I found out that this bug is due to permission issues
when accessing USB.

This issue affects all applications accessing garmin GPS devices directly via
usb (such as gpsbabel). Here is a description and a solution:
http://www.gpsbabel.org/os/Linux_Hotplug.html
The relevant part is this:

To allow the USB devices to be read and written by a non-privileged user,
create a named /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules with the following contents:
SYSFS{idVendor}==091e, SYSFS{idProduct}==0003, MODE=666

Would it be possible to create such a rule by default? Or does it have
any security problems? At the current state, it's simple not possible to
access Garmin GPS devices as an unprivileged user.
