[Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts

2008-12-28 Thread Mark Brown
Yes, a Debconf note would be the way forward, though it'd have to be a
low priority one. Note that I'm mostly talking about enabling this on
upgrade here - new systems are a bit different since you won't damage
anyone's running system.

Given that this is Launchpad I'd presume that any discussion here is
Ubuntu-specific.

[Bug 311957] [NEW] Please enable support for dummy interfaces

2008-12-28 Thread Tuomas Jormola
Public bug reported:

It would be quite beneficial if dhcp3 server supported Linux dummy
ethernet devices by default. For example I would like to use dummy
interface on a virtualization host to provide net install and/or LTSP
services for virtual machines. This requires working PXE booting setup,
which requires DHCP server in the subnet. A clean way to implement this
is to add a dummy interface on the server and configure virtualized
network interfaces on the virtual machines that are bridged to the dummy
interface on the host and have the host services (DHCP, TFTP etc.)
listen the bridged dummy interface.

Using of dummy interfaces is explicitly disabled in the DHCP server
source. The behavior can only be toggled during build time. It's
controlled by the macro SKIP_DUMMY_INTERFACES in includes/cf/linux.h.
That definition should be commented out.

The actual code that skips dummy interfaces only checks if the name of
the interface begins with the string 'dummy'. Thus one can work-around
this problem by renaming the interfaces provided by the dummy ethernet
driver by editing udev rules. However, this is not very nice thing to
do. And neither is the decision by maintainers of ISC DHCP just blindly
ignore all interfaces with some string of their choosing in the name of
the interface. Since the administrator has already mechanism to limit
DHCP server to use only those interfaces that are wanted, this kind of
arbitrary limitation by the software should go away.

around: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=430528

[Bug 311961] [NEW] 8.10 system-config-printer lost SMB connection selection

2008-12-28 Thread Retromingent
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I was trying to resolve an issue of sharing a printer that is local to
Vista and remote samba connected for Ubuntu 8.10. The issue was that
the printer was visible from Ubuntu for the New - printer under
system-config-printer, but would not verify. That is, the Verify
process would report that the printer was inaccessible. However, that
issue I believe is on the Vista side and not what I am reporting here.
The problem I'm reporting here was caused by me in the attempt to make
the Vista printer accessible. Here are the steps I took that led to the
problem and the samba config I now have.

What I am asking for here is how to make system-config-printer offer an
SMB connection again.

Steps that led to problem:
1. Was running Samba 3.2 fine. system-config-printer allowed for SMB printer
connection no problem.
2. Installed samba4 (again, in order to address accessibility issues with
Vista printer.). This uninstalled samba 3.2 in the process.
3. Samba4 didn't do what I wanted, so I reinstalled samba 3.2 (which
automatically uninstalled samba4).
4. Now system-config-printer no longer has an SMB option in its config. That
is, if I select New - Printer it will give me Serial Port #1, AppSocket/HP
JetDirect, IPP, LPD, and other but no SMB as it used to.

smb.conf (samba 3.2 as of latest install):
#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
# commented-out examples in this file.
# - When such options are commented with ;, the proposed setting
#differs from the default Samba behaviour
# - When commented with #, the proposed setting is the default
#behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
#enough to be mentioned here
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# testparm to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.
# A well-established practice is to name the original file
# smb.conf.master and create the real config file with
# testparm -s smb.conf.master smb.conf
# This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
# which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance

2008-12-28 Thread RomanIvanov
Tanks for feedback, My issue was about menus + screenshooter for this
plugin.

This workaround does not work for me, please do following steps to check:
0. Add Screenshooter plugin to panel (even with horizontal panel does not work)
1. open Firefox(or any application).
2. open menu Bookmarks
3. move mouse to screenshooter icon on the panel. Menu is still open.
4. Click over screenshooter icon.

Detected: Menu was closed, no actioning from screenshooter.
Screnshooter's hit is appeared. Focus is still in FireFox because I can
press Ctrl+L to go to location TextField.

Expected: I do not know, I think is normal matter of loosing focus and
menu is closed.

Unfortunately this is not possible.

Re: [Bug 225133] Re: networkmanager-openvpn does not support pkcs12

Not only Yes, but is there some manual workaround for it? My

NetworkManager (0.7) mentions a User Certificate, is this what they're
 talking about?

There is no manual workaround except using openvpn from the command
line. Basically, in order to connect to an OpenVPN server using
certificates, you need to things: a user certifiate (obviously) and
the associated private key that goes with the certificate. OpenVPN
enables you to specify these two elements either as two separate files
(cert file and key file), or as a single standardised (PKCS#12) bundle
that contains both certifiate and private key and is usually protected
by a password. The idea is to add an option to choose either PKCS#12
or Certificate + key files in the configuration dialog.

As a sidenote, using P12 is much more convenient, and is, to the
best of my knowledge, the most common way of handling
certificate+private key short of storing them in a smart card or
security dongle.

[Bug 311880] [NEW] Brasero reports ISO standard as having gender. [typo]

2008-12-28 Thread ARCKEDA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

In Intrepid Ibex, I was trying to burn a ISO file when I got this:

Do you really want to add A Christmas Story.ISO to the selection and
use the third version of ISO9660 standard to support it?

The size of the file is over 2 GiB. This isn't supported by ISO9660 standard
in his first and second versions (the most widespread ones).
It is recommended to use the third version of ISO9660 standard which is
supported by most of the operating systems including Linux and all versions of
Windows ©.
A known exception is MacOS X that can't read images created with version 3 of
ISO9660 standard.

Notice this sentence:
This isn't supported by ISO9660 standard in his first and second versions (the
most widespread ones).

standard in his first

Hehe, I didn't know the ISO standard was a boy. I am pretty sure this
is a typo, or I should question my very reality.

A Disney DVD (Little Mermaid) crashes PowerDVD completely for me. Also

pixellated. I realise this is probably due to additional Disney DRM as
other DVDs play OK. This DVD plays OK on a WinXP machine and in the DVD
player though. I don't see why to bother paying for the commercial
product, if it doesn't work and have asked Cannonical for a refund.

[Bug 311494] Re: Hibernation and suspend do not work properly in Lenovo Ideapad Y530

2008-12-28 Thread duanedesign
Thank you for taking the time to submit this bug report. We appreciate the
difficulties you are facing.
The first thing to check is that the swap partition is 2x the size of the RAM.
This is necessary for suspend to disk to work. I have seen this page
recommended for Lenevo's with suspend to Disk/RAM problems.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaLaptopBinaryDriverSuspend

If the problem persists I would recommend starting a thread in the forums
'Hardware Laptops' section. There are quite a few Lenovo users in the forum
and they are very helpful.
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=135

Here is the link to the Lenovo forum Linux section.
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board?board.id=Special_Interest_Linux

Here are some threads about Lenovo issues in the Ubuntu forum. I don't know if
your problem in particular is covered but at least it will put you in contact
with fellow Lenovo users on the forum.

2008-12-28 Thread Brian Takita
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

My computer will randomly freeze when I use it, or leave it alone for a
while (long enough for it to hibernate).

When the computer freezes, the screen is still visible, except
everything stops. The clock stops and the process monitor applet stops.
The system does not react to the keyboard or mouse.

Also, most of the time, the wifi, Caps lock, and Scroll lock lights
blink.

I am using a Dell D820 with Ubuntu 8.10. I think I'm using the NV
driver. I used to use the nvidia driver, but it seems that 8.10 has the
nv driver by default.

It used to rarely happen (like twice since I have owned this laptop
which is about 2 1/2 years) but is happening very frequently today (4
times already).

What other information do you need?

Thanks,
Brian

I have a similar problem with a wireless USB mouse and my USB Epson Photo RX420

The printer is recognised and installed immediately.
Print queue works. When the computer is restarted, the print job will start,

[Bug 305571] Re: foo2zjs - HP LaserJet 1018 printer detected but not printing

2008-12-28 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
This printer needs to be configured using hp-setup to function correctly.
The automatic printer detection and configuration (plug 'n print) does not
install the firmware that is required for this printer to work.

Simply running:

sudo hp-setup

From a terminal should resolve this problem.

[Bug 285815] Re: Backlight keeps getting darker on MacBookPro

2008-12-28 Thread rydberg
So it seems to be reading quite low

Yes, this is the experience on several models: MBA11 and MBP41 fall into
the same category as your MBP51. The readings are low, but the full span
0-255 is actually used, which can be seen when exposing the sensor for
extreme light. The real problem seems to be that neither the kernel nor
gnome is equipped to handle sensor readings with such a large dynamic
range. For instance, the hal interface used by g-p-m is far too course-
grained, only allowing integer percentage values.

is this something specific to the applesmc driver on MBP 5,1

At least on my MBA11, the behavior is precisely the same. This could
most likely be improved upon in the driver, it has just not been done.

[Bug 311896] [NEW] Gnome-power-manager doesn't offer suspend/hibernate

2008-12-28 Thread darkcompanion
Public bug reported:

Since the upgrade to Intrepid, gnome-power-manager (the shutdown button
on the gnome-panel) doesn't offer the options 'suspend' and 'hibernate'.
My system is able to do this :

[kris...@gundabad] ~ $ gconftool-2 -g
/apps/gnome-power-manager/general/can_suspend
true

[kris...@gundabad] ~ $ polkit-auth | grep power-management.suspend
org.freedesktop.hal.power-management.suspend

[kris...@gundabad] ~ $ hal-device | grep power_management.can_suspend
  power_management.can_suspend = true  (bool)
  power_management.can_suspend_hybrid = false  (bool)

When I go to System Preferences Power Management tab General, and
then click on the Shutdown button again, the options are suddenly
present. This is reproducible; when I log off and log on again, the
problem is there again.

[Bug 311895] [NEW] [i945] spontaneous black screen (major pipe-A underrun)

2008-12-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I am using a Dell Latitude D430 with an Intel GM945.

When I use my external 19 TFT (through DVI, 1280x1024), I occasionally
get a black screen. This is not triggered by anything obvious, it just
happens spontaneously. It is impossible to recover from this with
restarting X, only a reboot cures it.

Further investigation shows that this is caused by a long series of

(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe A!

errors (some 10.000 lines in the log). I get short underruns pretty
often, which results in the screen flickering for a split second, but
when the long series happens, the screen stays black forever.

A comparison of the intel_reg_dump output (-: works, +: black screen)
confirms this as well:

-(II):PIPEASTAT: 0x0203 (status: VSYNC_INT_STATUS
VBLANK_INT_STATUS OREG_UPDATE_STATUS)
+(II):PIPEASTAT: 0x8000 (status: FIFO_UNDERRUN)

I have not observed this behaviour when I use the laptop undocked, with
the internal screen (1280x800).

This is current Jaunty with -intel 2:2.5.1-1ubuntu7. It also happened in
Intrepid, but back then I didn't know about intel_reg_dumper.

[Bug 224508] Re: [i965] Reducing resolution on 965G using Screen Resolution locks system up with flashing/blinking screen

2008-12-28 Thread JC AGUILAR
In my previous comment, the test was performed with Ubuntu 8.04.1.

Now, testing as proposed by Bryce on 2008-12-20 with the live CD option
2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).

Reported problem seems to be solved as not reproducible on my computer
(no change since 2008-10-31). Screen resolution can be changed using the
Screen Resolution applet to 1024X768 or to 1152X864 or to 800X600 and
back without any problem (no flashing/blinking screen).

Many thanks.

[Bug 273021] Re: Intrepid: KM2530DL Printing Errors

To me this looks like a problem with the foo2lava driver.
Can you attach a complete cups error_log with the foo2lava driver after trying
to print as described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#cupserrorlog
Your cups-logs.tar.gz file has a cups error_log of 0 bytes.

[Bug 94021] Re: MASTER firefox crash [with munmap ()] -- libflashplayer.so

2008-12-28 Thread John Vivirito
Why are we keeping this open? just to catch dups? other wise if we cant
fix the issue than no need to keep open. If i understand if firefox is
open firefox crashes when logging out. I dont see how we can support
something that you really shouldnt do. before shutdown all apps should
be closed. the reason its crashing is beecause ubuntu sort of kills
firefox since you didnt, and that is why when you start back up it calls
a crash.

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.printing.cups.general/15749
It looks like a lot of people started getting the problem after an upgrade,
possibly in ghostscript? Maybe we should test an older gs version?

It claims here
(http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/CanonFAQ#How_do_I_set_this_printer_up_with_Debian.3F)
that the message not support this image format is good/normal.

Thanks for looking into this.

[Bug 47379] Re: NM confused by combination of static and dynamic configured interfaces

2008-12-28 Thread Kasper Peeters
I don't think this is a duplicate of #5364 (which is about static IPs).
On my Intrepid installation with a wired and wireless card, NM first
connects to the wired network using DHCP. A while later (I haven't been
able to spot the logic, sometimes it never happens) it also connects to
the wireless network.

nm-tool reports both as 'state: connected'. The routing table looks like

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 1 00 eth0
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 00 wlan0
169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1000 00 eth0
0.0.0.0192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG0 00 eth0

That is, 192.168.1.0 traffic now has two destinations.

[Bug 295880] Re: form input disabled

2008-12-28 Thread Nan M
Apologies.
The bug results from the users chosen theme High Contrast Inverse - and the
Large Print version as well.
I forgot to check the usability tweaks when posting the bug - - having been
used to not questioning the more standard system settings of the popular
non-free system we've been using until last year.

Should we report the bug separately or leave it to the team to pass it
up the line?

thanks,
