[Bug 312345] [NEW] mysql versions prior to 5.0.74 have trouble export/import with leap seconds

2008-12-29 Thread Micah Gersten
Public bug reported:

From the MySQL manual:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/time-zone-leap-seconds.html

9.7.2. Time Zone Leap Second Support

Before MySQL 5.0.74, if the operating system is configured to return
leap seconds from OS time calls or if the MySQL server uses a time zone
definition that has leap seconds, functions such as NOW() could return a
value having a time part that ends with :59:60 or :59:61. If such values
are inserted into a table, they would be dumped as is by mysqldump but
considered invalid when reloaded, leading to backup/restore problems.

As of MySQL 5.0.74, leap second values are returned with a time part
that ends with :59:59. This means that a function such as NOW() can
return the same value for two or three consecutive seconds during the
leap second. It remains true that literal temporal values having a time
part that ends with :59:60 or :59:61 are considered invalid.

Re: [Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts

2008-12-29 Thread Harri
Mark Brown wrote:
It's not quite that simple - people use NIS on computers which move
between networks, such as laptops, and run multiple NIS domains on the
same network (which means that any DHCP configuration will only apply to
some systems). This makes it difficult to tell if the configuration on
the network applies to the current system.

Dhpc can send options to the client depending upon its mac address,
its subnet, etc. Configuring multiple nis domains via dhcp would be
easy.

About hibernate and moving your laptop from one network to another:
These special cases were never considered for either dhcp nor nis,
when these services were specified. I would suggest to start with
the regular operations for nis and dhcp, and to look at hibernate
support later.

Keep it simple. It is still Unix.

Like I say, enabling DHCP support on systems where it was not previously
enabled is not going to happen: the systems already work so any risk of
breaking them is unacceptable, which means that this can't be enabled
for upgrades. As I have said, it may be OK to default this on for new
installs but never for old installs.

Agreed. I thought you were talking about (version) upgrades in general.
A one-time confirmation dialog is surely OK.

Something which overwrites the configuration unconditionally wouldn't be
good enough - this would prevent use of any manual configuration and
would doubtless lead to users having their configuration destroyed.

Sure. Looking for some line like

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE, or remove this line.

should work.

Harri

[Bug 312090] [NEW] Offer 24-hour or AM/PM time format configuration

2008-12-29 Thread Pander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: base-installer

Ask during installation for 24-hour or AM/PM time format. Many people
use en_US.UTF-8 settings for keyboard et cetera but within this group,
many people would like 24-hours time display in their applications.

For beginners, it is too difficult to make this setting by adding this line:
  LC_TIME=nl_NL.UTF-8
to this file:
  /etc/default/locale

The nl_NL can be derived from the time zone, when a user would like
24-hour display in stead of AM/PM. User should be told via help text
that this configuration, setting time format to Dutch (or whatever) or
English, is regading 24-hours and AM/PM display.

See independent bug report for GNOME
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=565908
but this also should be done on system level during installation.

Implementing the functionality described above will improve the overall
user satisfaction and position Ubuntu better for normal users.

In that case, the culprit might the service hotkeys-setup, which is what
is causing these error messages. I've been having this problem for ages,
across several releases of Ubuntu and in both Gnome and KDE. Now, after
16 hours without hotkeys-setup, it's still working.

[Bug 285323] Re: Losing keyboard and mouse control when changing screen brightness with fn + arrow under intrepid

2008-12-29 Thread Onno Zweers
I agree totally with Wirawan. This bug, though small, is very serious. I
found the workaround Ctrl+Alt+Fx by myself because I wanted to check the
problem from the command line, but there are more and more users out
there who have no idea that their Linux has six text terminals. The only
thing they know is: if I use completely normal keys on my keyboard,
Linux crashes. Their conclusion will be that Ubuntu, or Linux in
general, sucks.

My setup, in case anybody is interested: Inspiron 1150, Linux

[Bug 124406] Re: Keyboard keys get stuck and repeat (Feisty, Gutsy)

2008-12-29 Thread Sardar
2Don, I think the priority of interrupt handling is not the problem, the
race conditions are. I've never had this problem on single-core CPU.
Unloading most of ACPI stuff will solve the problem, however this is a
nasty solution (I've laptop and use events of ac/battery for energy
profile changes).

It might be also the problem of keyboard itself, the firmware that acts
odd... In windows I get shift/ctrl/alt stuck every 2-3 hour, especially
if Firefox + Zend studio are loaded. Wit the latest patches (auto-
install 2-3 weeks ago) the problem is now appearing even more frequent.
Anyway this proves that keyboard is handled differently in Windows and
Linux, I've never seen repeating keys (missing ordinary key release) in
Windows and stuck control keys (missing shift/ctrl/alt key release) in
Linux.

I will try to compile non-preemptive kernel and report results later.''

2David Oftedal no, I dont' see these messages in dmesg.

By the way, I must add that I'm using Mandriva 2009 facing this issue,
not Ubuntu. And I'm using the cute Oxygen Yellow mouse theme. So I guess
this has to do with the major window managers or desktop environments
about how they specify the mouse theme to use to resize a window?

[Bug 281993] Re: [intrepid] REGRESSION: multimedia keys no longer working

2008-12-29 Thread Adam Dorsey
Clemente,
You're totally right, I never even thought of that. Instead of rebooting, I
just inserted the new module. I'm willing to bet that the next time I reboot,
the keys will stop working.

The big issue is that it seems that progress in the kernel Bugzilla
report has stalled. We need to get this patch reverted in the main
kernel so that we can have working keys again. I don't know about you
guys, but I never realized how much I use these keys until they were
unavailable.

you should also be able to boot with acpi=off. Try to:

 1) Install from LiveCD with acpi=off
 2) When the GRUB bootloader appears, use the arrow keys to select the desired
boot option (typically the first) and press e
 3) Go to the boot options row (it should be the second row) and press e again
 4) Write acpi=off at the end of the line
 5) Press ENTER (or ESC, i can't remember right now) to go back to the
 previous screen
 6) Use the arrow keys to highlight the first row and press b to boot

[Bug 303074] Re: [intrepid] /etc/init.d/rc level parsing is fragile

2008-12-29 Thread Stephan Trebels
Personally I had a few local startup scripts tagged as SA1 to SA3, which
I agree is debatable, but happens to work on all flavours of UNIX I have
encountered so far. The effect was a double start of all daemons on
init level 2.

If we discard this as an invalid example, there is no guarantee, that
the filename part following S?? has to start with an alphabetic letter,
so the current parsing is certainly incorrect.

[Bug 312097] [NEW] Gnome Scan fails to find USB scanner with 'The scan backend returned the following error: Invalid argument'

2008-12-29 Thread swulf
Public bug reported:

Attempting to use Gnome Scan (0.4.1-0ubuntu4) with a Canon CanoScan LIDE
25 USB scanner results in the following error after Gnome Scan goes
through its 'Probing devices' phase.

'An error occured while accessing device !
The scan backend returned the following error: Invalid argument'

The scanner is recognized by the Lenovo W500 laptop:

$ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname UVC Camera (17ef:4807) virtual device
device `plustek:libusb:005:003' is a Canon CanoScan LiDE25 flatbed scanner
$

Using scanimage directly appears to use the wrong device by default:

$ scanimage
scanimage: open of device v4l:/dev/video0 failed: Invalid argument
$

Some sort of scan can be made manually (although I haven't properly
adjusted settings etc.):

$ scanimage -d plustek:libusb:005:003 --format=tiff test.tiff

This controls the scanner and produces a scanned .tiff image.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10.

I modified the file /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf to identify the scanner
properly - see attached.

PS I am selecting 'I don't know' for the package containing the bug
because I get an error on submission of this report saying gnome-scan
does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different package. If you're
unsure, please select I don't know.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 312103] [NEW] ati radeon x200 not working intrepid

2008-12-29 Thread crai...@hotmail.com
Public bug reported:

I have a HP a1250n computer, with 2gb ram and a dedicated 250gb hard
driver for ubuntu, dual booting with Vista. This is a brand new install
of Intrepid, not an upgrade.

I have used Envy in the past (Hardy install), and it worked fine. But
now I have tried all of the methods I could find, EnvyNG, the Restricted
drivers in the repository and the Catalyst driver directly from ATI, not
of them work. And I don't know for what reasons, all of them seem
different.

The first thing I did, was try the restricted driver as Intrepid said
there was one for my computer. When I rebooted, the logon screen was a
mess, could not see anything. So I did a CTL ALT f1 to login to the
console and did an apt-get install envyng-core. That installed fine, but
after running envyng -t and rebooting, the same thing happened on the
logon screen. So I again did the CTL ALT f1 and did the envyng
--uninstall-all and rebooted. This time there was a dialog saying that
there was some problem with the driver and that the system would boot
in low-graphics mode. And there were some options to continue in low-
graphics mode, one for configure and one for troubleshoot. I tried each
one of them, but still nothing good happened. After that, I went to the
ubuntu forums and saw that ATI has catalyst drivers out for this card,
so I tried to install those using the method they say in their document.
Again, no joy.

So it is obvious I am missing something, but not sure what it is. Envy
worked for me in Hardy, but not now. The other methods are new to
Intrepid (as far as I know), and they don't work either. Any help here?

[Bug 312104] [NEW] [jaunty] Gnome cannot access Internet (dns problem)

2008-12-29 Thread Jonathan Ernst
Public bug reported:

I just do-release-upgraded to jaunty and encountered the following issue
after reboot :

I cannot access Internet because name resolution fails in firefox, pidgin,
evolution.
However name resolution works using command-line tools (host, dig, ping, etc.)

I changed /etc/resolv.conf to use my isp's dns server instead of my
router and not firefox Co works again (until next reboot when dhcp
will put back my router's ip in /etc/resolv.conf).

[Bug 298707] Re: wacom tablet stylus input jumps to next screen prematurely in dual monitor set-up

2008-12-29 Thread jonim8or
Have the same behavior in Kubuntu 8.10
Started with a clean X11 file (instead of copying my old one from prevous
linuxes), and modified it for my dual screen setup (19 monitor and rotated 15
monitor). Tablet appeared to work out of the box without having anything about
the tablet in Xorg.conf. Even pressure sensitivity works.

However, the tablet uses 2/3 of my 19 screen, and 1/3 of my 15 screen. When I
move my mouse to the right in my big screen, it jumps to the other screen.
When using it in the Gimp, some strange thing happens which might give a clue
to what is wrong:
I've configured the tablet to act relative to screen. When I paint, and drag my
pen to the right, the paint cursor in the gimp moves faster to the right than
the curser on the screen. The further to the right I get, the more difference
there is. It appears that the Gimp uses the absolute position and the desktop
width and height (2048X1024), where the x11 cursor places the cursor only on
the used part of the screen.

In the zip file I have a picture of my screen layout, my xorg.conf and
my lspci output.

I hope you can solve this bug.

[Bug 70403] Re: Strange loss of colors in text-mode terminal

2008-12-29 Thread Oliver Cole
Michiel's screenshots have gone offline again, but I think I'm seeing a
similar issue.

If my laptop is on battery power, it skips filesystem checks, and prints
an orange asterisk in the console when it does this (see CIMG1131.JPG).

However, as with Michiel, it goes into powersave after a while, and
clears all the white text from the console. However, it doesn't clear
the orange asterisk (see CIMG1130.JPG).

Is this the same bug?

Re: [Bug 291138] Re: Fonts degraded in bzflag when windows effects are on.

2008-12-29 Thread Jordi Sellares
Dear Bryce,

right now, I don't want to test experimental packages in my system because at
present it works and I'm afraid they could break it. I know by experience
that updates are a delicate point in linux distributions.

For this reason, I tried Jaunty alpha-2 on the akoya medion mini (msi wind
clone). Unfortunately, there was no 3D acceleration at all, even though the
logs showed no errors related to the DRI module.

Therefore, I will wait for a more mature version of Jaunty. I hope the bug is
still open by then. Otherwise, I will file it again.

Anyway, thank you very much for your effort!

Yours,

J.

 [This is an automatic notice.]

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

  1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
  https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

  -or-

  2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
  See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
 findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
 these directions to do so:

[Bug 312113] [NEW] Kernel stops booting 2.6.24-21

2008-12-29 Thread Horváth Dávid
Public bug reported:

When Intrepid came out i updated the system, but when booting the new
kernel, it was stopping at a point. I checked recovery mode and saw a
lot of text(something about modprobe exit-ed). I tried the old kernel
and it was working. I'm using it since. I tried to find a solution,
turning off the LAN from Bios, or setting PCI flags did not help. I
tried to reinstall the kernel many times, tried many varieties no
success.

2.6.24-21 is working(and the kernels before this), what are not woking
are after this(2.6.27-xx). Even from Live CD/DVD.

acpi_pm_good is set for my motherboard, there is a workaround what slows
down the system, i've checked and this mb does not have this hardware
bug. Tried it without this, nothing changed. I have Nvidia Geforce Mx440
64mb AGP, using legacy drivers(93.4?) from repo.

I've made screenshots:

[Bug 312124] [NEW] no sound with Intel HDA 82801G on Ubutun 8.10 (Toshiba Tecra laptop)

2008-12-29 Thread michael mestre
Public bug reported:

Hello,

There is no sound on my Toshiba Tecra laptop with Ubutu 8.10.
The sound card is listed in lspci as
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)
but it is not seen by applications using sound. Alsa doesn't seem to see it.

Attached are my lspci file.

It seems that ubutu doesn't load the appropriate module at boot.
Furthermore, loading by hand snd-hda-intel seems to do the trick at first, and
a sound card is visible, but no sound comes out.

Thanks for your help,
Michael

[Bug 312126] [NEW] Custom browser does not receive URL at %s

2008-12-29 Thread David Fraser
Public bug reported:

I have used the Preferred Applications dialog to set up a custom browser
function, so that I can tell firefox to open the URL in a new tab in a
particular profile (I always have two firefox instances open with different
profiles):
 firefox -P default -remote openurl(%s, new-tab)
I can verify this has been set using
 gconftool --get /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command
However, when I try and open a URL it fails. On investigation, running
 gnome-open http://google.com/
runs
 firefox -P default -remote openurl(, new-tab) http://google.com/

So basically rather than replacing the %s with the URL, it removes the
%s and appends the URL
