[Bug 372358] Re: Please merge openvpn 2.1~rc15-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2009-05-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
@Andres:
About $script_security, yes, we also need it to be passed as an option.

And yes, something similar to what you propose just might take the best
of both worlds : use start-stop-daemon to avoid failure on start when a
PID file is not deleted, and still have our $script_security and boot-
time password bypass.

The only issue is that I'm not sure (at all) start-stop-daemon would
pass the /dev/null to the daemon and that it would work as intended. So
yes, it needs to be thoroughly tested: setup a password-protected VPN,
reproduce success to boot with current ubuntu, upgrade to the merged
version and check if it would not restore the bug (boot process blocked
by openvpn asking for a password).

[Bug 375593] Re: cannot browse samba shares without editing smb.conf

2009-05-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
Apparently this is the (successful) smbclient output you get once you edited
the smb.conf file so that bcast is tried before host. I need the smbclient
trace for a failure case... Could you restore the original smb.conf file (the
one that fails) temporarily and regenerate/attach the resulting output ?
Thanks

[Bug 376359] Re: Truncating NetBIOS name don't work

I think it's a hostname resolution issue on the client side, due to mismatch

smbclient -d 4 -N -L //servername
on the client in both cases and post the corresponding output ?

[Bug 329974] Re: system-config-printer.py crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_dns_gethostbyname2_r()

2009-05-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
Reopening as this is not fixed in Jaunty, multiple reports show.

According to duplicate bug 368273 this seems to be hitting i386 but not
amd64, which might be the reason why Brian failed to reproduce it.

A workaround to be able to create printers (using IP address) is
described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/368273/comments/10

Adding samba task since the crash is probably related to libsmbclient.

A nearly identical crash in _nss_mdns4_minimal_gethostbyname2_r is
tracked in bug 359088. I suspect it's coming from the same bug.

[Bug 329974] Re: SIGSEGV in _nss_dns_gethostbyname2_r() browsing Samba printers, i386 only

2009-05-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
Hm, I am struggling with the root cause of this. It is a Jaunty-specific
issue, but the libsmbclient code shown in the trace didn't really change
since Intrepid... However the glibc code (where the SIGSEGV ultimately
occurs) did change. In particular sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c. So maybe
it's a side-effect of glibc bug 374674. The stack clearly passes through
code from that now-useless Ubuntu-specific patch. I'll try to narrow it
some more.

[Bug 311487] Re: ldap n-way multi master from Ubuntu Server guide

2009-05-15 Thread hamannp
I can confirm the sad tale of woe with the OpenLdap tutorial on Jaunty.
It took me a while to figure out that pasting the syncrepl config text
into an ldif file didn't work. When I ran ldapmodify on that ldif, it
would skip over parts of the file. As a consequence, things like the
olcOverlayConfig didn't get run.I edited it in Kate and was careful
not to add any extraneous characters. But I ultimately had to paste
each part into a separate ldif file. I'm still not able to get it to
work. Worse still, the documentation doesn't provide trouble-shooting
of any kind. If you don't get it on your first try, you're on your own.
I checked the forums -- not much help. I tried using slapd.conf to
setup a master/slave replication. That approach is well-documented. But
when I ran slaptest, it said that the master/slave syntax was obsolete
and therefore ignored.

I would strongly encourage anyone with an understanding of OpenLap on
Ubuntu to help with the tutorial documentation. In particular, the lack
of troubleshooting makes Ubuntu a no-go for OpenLdap. I would also
strongly encourage people considering OpenLdap on Ubuntu to build it
from source. I did get that to work.

Regards,
Paul

2009-05-15 Thread Thierry Carrez
The problem is apparently in your DNS resolution. Basically the master
browser says that UPSTAIRS exists. But when you browse it tries to
resolve UPSTAIRS to an IP address...

With the default resolve order, it tries DNS resolution before
broadcast. For some reason (I suspect a DNS that answers something where
it shouldn't, like OpenDNS) your DNS resolves UPSTAIRS - 67.63.55.3.
That timeouts and fails.

If you switch to bcast before hosts then it asks locally on your LAN
who is UPSTAIRS et gets the right answer.

Setting as invalid as your DNS should not answer 67.63.55.3 when you ask
for UPSTAIRS. It should either fail to answer or return the IP address
of the UPSTAIRS machine. Try ping UPSTAIRS to double-check...

I don't have an idea, but may this issue is connected with seahorse agent?

[Bug 375593] Re: cannot browse samba shares without editing smb.conf

2009-05-15 Thread Martin G Miller
ping upstairs does indeed try to resolve 67.63.55.3. This IP address is
nowhere in my network. ping does resolve it, but it takes about 23
ms. I have no idea why this should be. I have the exact same problem
on 2 different networks in 2 different towns using different brands of
routers. They both require the smb.conf fix as noted above to work.
The only similarity between the 2 networks is that they both use the
same ISP. Could this be somehow related to DNS by my ISP? The 67.63...
belongs to a company on the other side of the USA from where I am.

[Bug 375593] Re: cannot browse samba shares without editing smb.conf

2009-05-15 Thread Martin G Miller
One last thought. If the default resolve order is using DNS before
broadcast, doesn't that slow down local network browsing? Since this
may turn out to be an ISP problem on my end, wouldn't it make sense to
change the default resolve order so it looks at the local network before
trying DNS? Using the changed order, the network browse gui pops up
instantly. Using the default, it takes close to a minute to appear. I
also checked the addresses of my DNS servers and I am not using openDNS.
I am using the DNS servers that my ISP assigns to my router.

[Bug 233942] Re: genisoimage generates wrong DVD-Video images

On my standalone player SHARP DV-SV92 DVD-Video disks created by the program
genisoimage are not played. I tried packages genisoimage of versions 1.1.2,
1.1.6 and 1.1.9. But there is no difference, DVD disks are not played.
DVD-Video disks created by the program mkisofs (from cdrtools by Joerg

[Bug 376794] [NEW] Multisync installed through Add/Remove has no plugins at all

2009-05-15 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: multisync

Using Multisync 0.82 on Ubuntu 2009.04

Multisync is useless if no plugins at all are installed.

I installed multisync-gui via Add/Remove applications, and I could not
create a new synchronization pair, because the plugins drop-down lists
are empty.

I had to manually run sudo apt-get install libmultisync-plugin-all in

I suggest installing this package automatically when multisync is

[Bug 376732] Re: Hardy foomatic-rip PageSetup is broken, fails LSB tests

2009-05-15 Thread Martin Pitt
Is this a regression from gutsy?

The patch (http://bugs.linuxbase.org/attachment.cgi?id=1354) seems to
change several different thing, and also has some whitespace changing
which make it a bit difficult to read. Could you perhaps point to the
individual bzr commits, so that the changes can be reviewed more easily?

[Bug 376802] [NEW] memory leak in something

2009-05-15 Thread Robert Collins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This could be video driver/metacity/xorg related - I'm not sure at this
point.

Anyhow, firing up inkscape and just resizing the window for a minute
pushes Xorgs appparent memory use up by about 10MB.

Closing inkscape doesn't release the memory.

I'm quite sure this is actually leaked somewhere - when it was up to
1.4GB my machine was nearly unusable even after closing all X
applications.

I couldn't properly check if it was userspace or not because of bug
376798, which may be related.

This may be yet-another-dup of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xorg-server/+bug/98783 . I will note that this is reproducible right
after boot, without starting up firefox or any other applications.

[Bug 376732] Re: Hardy foomatic-rip PageSetup is broken, fails LSB tests

2009-05-15 Thread Till Kamppeter
To reproduce:

Download the upstream source of foomatic-filters 4.0.0 or newer:

wget http://www.openprinting.org/download/foomatic/foomatic-
filters-4.0.1.tar.gz

Go into the test/ subdirectory and run

sudo ./testfoomaticrip

This tests the system's foomatic-rip

You can slo run any foomatic-rip by copying it into the current
directory and running

sudo sh -c 'PATH=.:$PATH ./testfoomaticrip'

and searching for FAIL in the resulting output file tet_xres.

Hardy's foomatic-rip fails in tests 3 and 11, the patched foomatic-rip
has no FAIL at all.

[Bug 376809] [NEW] linux kernel update crashed when installed from Synaptic Package Manager

I was browsing using Firefox. I was notified that there are some
updates. I was shown that kernel 2.6.27-14 is also available among
others. I asked it to proceed and install them. It downloaded the
updates. It was trying to install it, but before the installation dialog
goes away, an icon appeared on the top Panel with a balloon notification
that there is a crash report available to be sent to the forum. The
crash report mentioned that the installation of the kernel update
failed. I OK'd it to go ahead, which took me to this page. I registered

[Bug 376807] [NEW] ubuntu everywhere

2009-05-15 Thread phonixor
Public bug reported:

rationale:
UBUNTU EVERYWHERE!!!
- not all my files are everywhere
- my favorite programs/setting are @home
- net-books are to sexy
- laptops are to light
- i don't have install rights @school
- they don't have ubuntu at work (the sacrilege!!!)
- people are questioning my nerdyness

solution!!!:
UBUNTU EVERYWHERE!!!
The ultimate USB stick, that allows you to run your own desktop and favorite
apps anywhere!
- If you boot it it should act as a normal live usb distro, but this time one
that will save any changes you make, and allows you to install stuff...
(not sure how its now... i somehow failed to make one... will test later :P)
- portable ubuntu like if put in windows box, this will run ubuntu apps in
windows!(described more in detail bellow)
  http://lifehacker.com/5195999/portable-ubuntu-runs-ubuntu-inside-windows
similar for mac if possible (though this is less important, cause there are
just many more windows pc's out there, and you should shun mac users anyways!)
- if you put it in a foreign ubuntu machine, you should load a guest like
account for ubuntu, but this time with your favorite settings
(maybe also use the packages/programs on the usb if not on the host pc...
might be a dependency hell... so you'll have to think about this :P)
All of these should make use of the same data!!!. you want all programs
everywhere!!! and you want everything similar!!!

From this point it is just a better usb live implementation but Canonical is
creating a new dropbox like service,
https://ubuntuone.com/
All the files (program settings, plugins etc..) (and maybe later packages, but
that could be solved by my solotion bellow) should be synced by this service,
so that if you lose your usb stick its not a complete disaster), and it makes
integration with the desktop even more awesome (objective post are for noobs).
also this makes it possible to make full use of the ubuntu one features on a
foreign computer, on windows environments!
(they werent planning on making any ports)
This also allows you to use ubuntu one on offline computers!!!, cause the
moment you get home, all data is synced.

Stick it in UBUNTU!:
It would be great if not only your documents, but also your applications whould
stay the same on your home pc.
what if once you add it into your ubuntu machine (or any ubuntu pc on which you
have admin rights i guess..)
you can get the options:
sync the packages from my computer to the usb stick.
sync the packages from my usb stick to my computer (might be usefull for
computers without internet connection).
clone this USB stick (make it viral!)
create a package/repository list document
(Space on an usb stick is limited, but once you get to an other computer, you
should be able to select to install all packages from this list aswell
(you will download, this way cloning will also be possible for smaller usb
sticks).

Stick it in Windows!/Mac!:
There should be an autorun.ini (something simular for mac) that opens a menu
with the following options:
- startup portable ubuntu
- open file browser
- startup ubuntu as virtual box (for those who can't live without there
favorite background)
- install as dual boot / full install / install portable ubuntu / clone me!
- stop bugging me! (close the window)
- remote desktop to my home pc (or a cloud version... more bellow :P) ---
maybe not really necessery... but still cool :P
(this also gets you to use your remote desktops if you dont have the admin
rights to install the tools you might otherwise need)
most of these options should have a radio button behind them to set them as the
prefered action, so that the next time you insert the USB stick,
it wont open the damn menu, for this will become very annoying...
(implementation... make the autorun.ini run the .exe with a flag, that will
auto pick the default setting, this way if you manualy click the .exe, it will
open the menu again, so you can change the default, or pick an other action :P)

Boot it!:
- start default live session
- install normal ubuntu (you like to share ubuntu with the world, but you dont
want to share your files)
- sync the usb stick to the computer (clone it :P) (though some additional
options should be set here...)
- (the other options the live usb/ live cd offer :P)

Important/implementation stuff:
- the file system should not be supported by MAC OS X!! cause if you insert
your USB stick in a mac hole, you'll garaunteed to get aids!!
(2 files in every directory, that are supposed to store the map display
settings or something... BAD MAC!!)
instead the open file browser option in the menu should translate it.
(though you need a very small one with the autorun and the menu of course :P)
- windows trash can's are also annoying... as are the .trash dirs made by
ubuntu...
(there only annoying if there empty... else its a nice feature of course :P)
so it might be nice to do it here aswell, though its less mandatory...
- normally

[Bug 346806] Re: gnome-system-monitor does not always show all processes

2009-05-15 Thread M. Qadri
I don't know if this a relevant comment to toss into the mix, but a
sudo gnome-system-monitor shows all the other processes that are
probably daemons and anything run in sudo, as far as I can tell. I find
no sudo in my process list in non-sudo-ed gnome-system-monitor. For sake
of simplicity, I suppose this works, protecting sudoed processes, but
maybe it's be better to have sudoed processes be view-only on a regular
gnome-system-monitor, and a gksudo be called if someone wants to stop
one of those processes?
