[Bug 381269] [NEW] NUT fails to shutdown UPS

2009-05-28 Thread Martin Maney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nut

It's barely possible that Ubuntu isn't vulnerable to this - I discovered
it, and did the actual smoke tests, on a Debian Lenny machine. The
problem is that the nut init script's powerdown function relies on
calling upsmon -K at a very late point, and that command fails, whcih
causes the script to imagine that the kill ups file is not present.
The reason for the failure is quite simple:

ma...@furrr:~$ ldd /sbin/upsmon
linux-vdso.so.1 = (0x745fe000)
libupsclient.so.1 = /usr/lib/libupsclient.so.1 (0x7f49ec001000)
libc.so.6 = /lib/libc.so.6 (0x7f49ebc8f000)
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x7f49ec207000)

I think we would all have to agree that there's no real use placing an
executable into /sbin when it depends on a library in /usr/lib, yes?

This issue exists present in Debian Lenny and Ubuntu Interpid. It
probably also affects Hardy and Gutsy, though they have a different sub-
minor version number; however, Debian Etch, with nut 2.0.4, already has
that in its init script. Etch is not affected by this bug because its
upsmon does NOT have the /usr/lib/libupsclient.so dependency. I haven't
any machines handy with Jaunty to check at this time.

** Affects: nut (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Blueprint server-karmic-encrypted-swap-as-an-option] Encrypted Swap as an Option

2009-05-28 Thread Daniel T Chen
Blueprint changed by Daniel T Chen:

Whiteboard changed to:

Discussion Points:
 * UDS Buy-in (main use case is hibernate):
  * karmic implementation:
* encrypted home in installer - setup swap encryption
(ecryptfs-setup-swap), document hibernation incompatibility
* randomly generate key on boot (no passphrase wrapping)
* open wishlist bug for hibernation resume support
* need UI changes to Applications Accessories Passwords and Encryption
Keys
  * post-karmic implementation (hard):
* algorithm: wrap randomly generated password with PAM system passphrase on
login (for multiple users), store in LUKS keyslot
* teach resume scripts to prompt for user's wrapping passphrase on resume,
decrypt swap, resume
  * possible regressions and workarounds:
* /tmp contents are still viewable, worked around in short term by using
tmpfs for /tmp when system has some amount X of RAM, worked around in long term
by moving /tmp into ~/.tmp
 * additional notes:
  * see who is using encrypted home and encrypted swap

 * Original suggested design:
  * encrypt swap, using a randomly generated key every boot
  * by default, use a static wrapping password like ubuntu, and store the
wrapped swap key in LUKS
  * teach hibernation resume (init?) to try this static default passphrase first
  * if that doesn't work, then prompt the user for the wrapping passphrase
  * in System-Administration, provide a utility that allows the administrator
switch from the insecure default ubuntu wrapping passphrase to a PAM-based
wrapping passphrase
   * teach PAM to take a successful login passphrase and re-wrap the randomly
generated swap passphrase with the login passphrase if secure swap is
enabled, (possibly populating 1 or more of the LUKS keyslots)
   * On hibernate event, ensure that the current user's passphrase has been
used to wrap the swap passphrase in one of the LUKS keyslots
* would need to prompt for a passphrase here, if this was an auto-login and
the user wants secure-swap
-- Dustin Kirkland

(steve.langasek) When I migrated my laptop from hardy to intrepid, I
turned on encrypted swap at the same time (swap LV on top of
LVM+encryption). Anything that makes heavy use of swap on my desktop
now brings the whole system to its knees. Please be cognizant of
performance issues when implementing this - I fear this may be untenable
as a default for desktop systems.

(Roderick Greening) It would never be expected to encrypt a swap file
which exists in a LVM encrypted drive. Given that to build a LVM system,
you have to use the alternate cd, the user would be in total control of
these choices. Via the regular live CD/DVD, LVM is not a option (that I
recall), so encrypting the swap by default should not be problematic.

(Paul Klapperich) As far as encrypted swap working with hibernate, it
sounds like this goes nicely on computers that have a TPM as per the
second link. I don't have one to test. For computers without a tpm, I
don't know how ecryptfs works, but for luks we could perhaps use a pam
module to hold the user account password for the duration of the login
and set it as an alternate key for the luks swap partition (which
previously had a random key only) if the user initiates a hibernate.
Alternatively a global swap password could be created instead of (or
somehow in addition to) random key encryption, but that's an extra
password that now all users of the system would be required to know. It
would, however, allow a resume from hibernate followed by a switch user
if the person who hibernated is not present.

(Przemysław Kulczycki) Will this block the system's ability to write
crash dumps to swap partition and to save it from swap partition to file
after a reboot?

(Jerone Young) How can we start talking about something like this being
by default when it has not even had field testing. If Jaunty is about
stability this is not the way to go. Also since (from what I know) this
is not being done in the kernel but rather in userspace, which is going
to cause big performance issues when writing to swap. Another thing is
where are the keys kept to decrypt the swap? How is a machine going to
wake up from hibernation? This also will not work with the grub fast
hibernation patches. Not a good idea to do at this time.

[Bug 381465] [NEW] Apache2 can't serve static files over 100-200 kb

2009-05-28 Thread Sondre Slathia
Public bug reported:

I just setup a new ubuntu server 8.04 LTS as a LAMP server in our
production environment. Earlier we have been using Debian for our
production servers. In the testing phase i found out that with a
standard installation of 8.04 server with all the updates as of this
date this bug hasen't been fixed.

The problem is that when somone tries to download a file (example: PDF,
FLV) its either VERY slow or the user isen't able to download the file
at all. I googled the solution and found out that when i tell apache to
not use sendfile (EnableSendfile Off) it works great. This is a problem
since this is set to On as default.

I searched for other bugs related to this problem and found one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2/+bug/95393/ but im
reposting since that is specific to a live-cd and this is a plain normal

[Bug 381173] [NEW] update-manager randomly pops up without asking

2009-05-28 Thread Paul Sladen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 332945 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Since Jaunty/9.04 came out (so ~1 month), update-manager now pops up
(seemingly) randomly, either after login, or after doing some command
line dpkg operations, or at other times by itself.

This could be related to a cronjob.

Ideally, update-manager should not pop up unless requested to do so.

I run with auto-updates (in theory, at least) disabled, as my primary
internet link in a GPRS connection where bandwidth is both slowly and
monetarily costly.

[Bug 352373] Re: [jaunty] System randomly freezes

2009-05-28 Thread Ulrich
These random freezes also happens to me and I find it a serious bug as
it prevents me doing my daily work. Could you please upgrade the
repositories to stable kernel packages for Jaunty. I had several freezes
during the last days and lost some work. Jaunty seems too unstable and I
cannot recommended it currently here in a our research institute for
daily work.

Thx, Ulrich

[Bug 331589] Re: Extremely loud and intrusive system beep with (some?) HD Audio devices

2009-05-28 Thread civility
People,,

I have the same issue..

I've noticed compiz is not acting as expected either. My 3D cube and
such are not working since the upgrade from Ibex to Jaunty.

If you can,, please check to see if your compiz settings are acting
normal. If not, I fear this could be related and should be looked in to
further.

The piix driver in that kernel is buggy, it worked fine previously with the 8.10

[Bug 304265] Re: Dialogs too big for screen size, can't reach all options

2009-05-28 Thread SamAdams
Yep, same here on Jaunty. Though I've had this problem since back with
6.04 and not just with VLC. I don't recall the other apps that have
this problem, but man is it frustrating. I'm not sure if it is an error
on the app's part for not letting the OS manage the dialogue box, or
else Ubuntu is not dynamically sizing or scrolling the box to match the
user's screen resolution settings. Since apps like Control Panel scroll
properly, I'm going to guess it's the fault of VLC and other apps for
setting a fixed dialogue box size and not letting Ubuntu manage it.

Kompare crashed in Ubuntu 8.10 complaining about files not existing in
.kde, but only if I gave it arguments (if no arguments, it runs and
functions fine except for the window taking the whole screen). After
running konqueror this problem goes away, even after a reboot kompare is
fine. I can't reproduce it. I don't use konqueror much so maybe there
was some legacy set up in .kde, that kompare does not fix.

[Bug 219276] Re: Please sync parrot (1.0.0-1) from Debian unstable

2009-05-28 Thread Allison Randal
Okay, I've got it. Apparently on karmic, lpia builds with -Os by default
(thanks to Robert Collins for digging up that tip). Among other things,
-Os disables the -falign-functions optimization (in order to save
space). Parrot can build with or without aligned function pointers, but
it was detecting lpia as ordinary i386, and so expecting them, and
failing on an assert. I added a config patch to detect the lpia
architecture (using the -gnulp element of the arch-os-gnu triplet) and
correctly set Parrot's config value for aligned_funcptr to 0. Parrot
now successfully builds on karmic lpia.

[Bug 381183] [NEW] Cannot make mdadm autocreate raid1 after crash

2009-05-28 Thread Martin
Public bug reported:

After experienceing a crash (newtwork-manager freeze in Jaunty) my raid1
(where /home sits) disk won't start automatically. I am thrown into to a
shell during bootup. But I can assemble the devices by writing madadm
--assemble /dev/md_d0 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1. Then the raid is started and
working fine. However, I cannot make them autostart as they did when
they were created until the crash. I also tried adding
--update=summaries when assembling the drives, but it doesnt make a
difference. After assembling the drives I have checked for errors, but
there are none, so it is most likely an effect of a flag / superblock /
whatever just saying something is wrong without it actually being so.

[Bug 381187] [NEW] gnome-power-manager does not detect notify-osd

2009-05-28 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Public bug reported:

gnome-power-manager (as of 2.26.1-0ubuntu3) does not detect notify-osd
for changing the brightness levels. The reason for this is that the
libnotify code in the Ubuntu patch is surrounded by a #ifdef
HAVE_LIBNOTIFY, which is no longer defined in the new version of
gnome-power-manager.

[Bug 375352] Re: Karmic desktop CD fails to boot because of different squashfs versions

2009-05-28 Thread Colin Watson
casper isn't responsible for this - the bug is simply in the squashfs
package. It should have been left there rather than bounced around all
over the place. :-)

Although this bug is fairly trivial in itself, the reason we hadn't
fixed this until now was that there was basically no point in doing so
until we had a reasonable solution for a union filesystem in Karmic,
given that aufs is apparently no longer particularly sanely supportable
on the 2.6.30 kernel. I've been on the road, which slowed things down,
but I got unionfs-fuse working earlier this week as a stopgap measure
until we get proper VFS-level union mounts in the kernel (which are
coming soon), so it's now worthwhile to deal with this.

Hi John,

That might be it... my output of lspci shows I 'm using the same
driver. However,I only have problems once and a while when waking up
the laptop from a suspend, I turned auto-suspend off and it 's running
ok for a week now. I 'm not a real linux expert, what is your advice ?
Should I also switch to another driver ? If so, how is that done ?

thanks in advance,

John Prather wrote:
Here's some info which may (or may not?) help track this down.

In the past 6 days, I've installed ubuntu jaunty 9.04 64bit on a new
T500 laptop no less than 6 times. As others here report, I would start
doing updates/upgrades, and shortly afterward would run into various
issues which appear to all be symptoms of corrupted filesystem:

* Faulty tree errors doing apt-get update
* Errors about /var/lib/dpkg/status content
* Errors about /var/lib/dpkg/info/something.list having blank lines

Then, at some point, dmesg would indicate that there was some ext3-fs or
ext4-fs issue, and that journaling is aborted, and that the filesystem
is remounted read-only, which would of course then cause all variety of
 desktop app misbehavior.

A coworker with another T500 that was shipped with mine, is experiencing
the same issue on his hardware.

Another coworker with a T500, who got theirs in a different order, had
been running Jaunty 64bit for a month now with no such problems, so we
started to compare lspci output to see what chips might differ in the
two T500's that would have one work solidly for a month while the other
can't go 36 hours without corrupting its fs.

The only glaring difference we could see was that his laptop, which
wasn't experiencing any problems, had a disk controller with device
20f8, using ahci driver, while mine was using the same model controller,
but was listed with a device id 20f7, and which was controlled by
 ata_piix driver.

 Working:

00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation ICH9M/M-E SATA AHCI Controller

   I/O ports at 1c20 [size=32]
   Memory at fc226000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2K]
   Capabilities: access denied
   Kernel driver in use: ahci

 Failing:

00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation ICH9M/M-E 2 port SATA IDE Controller
 (rev 03) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP])
 Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20f7

 I/O ports at 1830 [size=16]
Capabilities: [70] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [b0] PCIe advanced features ?
 Kernel driver in use: ata_piix

I discovered that I could switch my disk controller device from 20f7 to 20f8,
and use the ahci driver instead of ata_piix driver by going into my Bios
settings, and under Config for the SATA controller, set it to AHCI instead
 of compatible.

I'd suggest that compatible mode might have had issues, except from the
amount of complaints here, it's just as likely that ata_piix is buggy
 when used on this hardware.

It'll be a couple days before I'm 100% comfortable that the issue is
resolved for me, but I'm pretty sure switching the disk
controller/behavior to match what has been working for other coworkers
should account for the only difference between their hardware setup
which hasn't run into this issue, and mine, which hadn't been able to
 escape it.

Re: [Bug 164120] Re: nautilus hangs when mounted nfs drive is no longer accessible

2009-05-28 Thread kindofabuzz
Soft or hard mounted, still does the same thing.

On Wed, May 27, 2009 at 9:12 PM, dmizer dmi...@hotmail.com wrote:

I believe this is expected NFS behavior, and can be fixed by specifying
a soft mount. Hard mount is default due to possible instability issues
with soft mounting. Using the soft option fixes the problem for me on
all of my machines from Hardy to Jaunty (Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Kubuntu).
The file system remains responsive (though slow) even after the server
is disconnected, and a simple sudo umount /mountpoint returns the file
system to a normal state. For more information, see man nfs soft /
 hard.

Anyone knows if this bug affects also some other distro like openSuse or
Mandriva? Maybe it may be only a distro problem

2009/5/28 WC Epperson launch...@epperson.homelinux.net

I think this is fixed in the latest HP bios updates for the dv4, dv6,
 and dv7, released March-May 2009. I'd guess the corresponding dv5
 update will be soon.

 --
HP Pavilion dv5: ATA exception on resume from suspend
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301353
You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber
 of the bug.

Status in The Linux Kernel: In Progress
Status in “linux” source package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
On resume from suspend in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) the ATA driver throws
a series of exceptions, as a result the filesystems can not be accessed and
the computer needs to be rebooted. Hibernate, however, does work and does
not have this problem, suspend / resume only. The linux kernel version is
 the latest 2.6.27-7.

 * Update 16th of May 2009 * The problem remains unchanged under Ubuntu 9.04
 (Jaunty Jackalope).

The initial error message on resume is:

 btusb_intr_complete: hci0 urb f7d94a00 failed to resubmit (2)
 ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x9 t4
 ata2: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
 ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x9 t4
 ata1: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
sd 0:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
PM: Device 0:0:0:0; failed to resume: error 65536

Then, as nothing is able function properly, the most repeated error message
 is as follows:

 ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x400 action 0xe frozen
 ata1: SError: { DevExch }
 ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x400 action 0xe frozen
 ata2: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
 ata2: SError: { DevExch }

There are a variety of other error messages thrown about ext3 file systems
not being to be re-mounted, but I haven't been able to capture those yet.

I'm running a fresh copy of Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), with the latest
updates, on a reasonably new HP Pavilion dv5 (1075er) notebook.

 Rationale:

Originally I posted my problem under bug #158050 but later I realised that
this was for an older kernel version. Then I thought that bug #273323 would
be a better fit, but that has since digressed into a KDE discussion,
entirely irrelevant to my problem. I've looked at every Intrepid suspend /
resume bug listed and none are specific to my distribution version, kernel
version or hardware so I'm starting a new one.

 * Update 16th of May 2009 * There has been a Kernel Bug Report open on this
 for some time now http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12276

 * Update 18th of May 2009 * There is also evidence, anecdotal and
otherwise, to suggest that the same problem is present on HDX and some other
 models of HP laptop.

Re: [Bug 301353] Re: HP Pavilion dv5: ATA exception on resume from suspend

2009-05-28 Thread shockdiode
It's been verified that this bug affects other distros and there is a
kernel bug open for this afaik

lordlukas wrote the following on 05/28/2009 12:18 AM:
Anyone knows if this bug affects also some other distro like openSuse or
Mandriva? Maybe it may be only a distro problem

 2009/5/28 WC Epperson launch...@epperson.homelinux.net

I think this is fixed in the latest HP bios updates for the dv4, dv6,
 and dv7, released March-May 2009. I'd guess the corresponding dv5
 update will be soon.

Status in The Linux Kernel: In Progress
Status in “linux” source package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
On resume from suspend in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) the ATA driver throws
a series of exceptions, as a result the filesystems can not be accessed and
the computer needs to be rebooted. Hibernate, however, does work and does
not have this problem, suspend / resume only. The linux kernel version is
 the latest 2.6.27-7.

 * Update 16th of May 2009 * The problem remains unchanged under Ubuntu 9.04
 (Jaunty Jackalope).

The initial error message on resume is:

 btusb_intr_complete: hci0 urb f7d94a00 failed to resubmit (2)
 ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x9 t4
 ata2: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
 ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x9 t4
 ata1: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
sd 0:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to offline device
PM: Device 0:0:0:0; failed to resume: error 65536

Then, as nothing is able function properly, the most repeated error message
 is as follows:

 ata1: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x400 action 0xe frozen
 ata1: SError: { DevExch }
 ata2: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x400 action 0xe frozen
 ata2: irq_stat 0x0040, connection status changed
 ata2: SError: { DevExch }

[Bug 352678] Re: gourmet does not start on jaunty

2009-05-28 Thread Saibot Sivad
Update: Clicking Gourmet from the Applications menu would give the startup
splash screen and never finalize. I also tried, from command line:
gourmet
/usr/bin/gourmet
Python2.5 /usr/bin/gourmet
This last one worked fine, as did using Python2.6
On a whim, I tried starting Gourmet from the command line again using:
gourmet
And it works fine. It also works fine when clicking in the Applications menu.
So it looks like some database initialization needed to be done using
Python2.5, but after it was initialized it could be started normally. Thanks.

[Bug 381192] [NEW] gqview segfaults on opening file from nautilus

2009-05-28 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gqview

If I'm in nautilus and I select an image file, right click and select
'open with gqview', gcqview segfaults with a message like:

This also happens if I set files to open with gqview by default and then
double-click on the file to open it.

gqview works properly if I open it manually and select the image file
from within gqview.

[Bug 381194] [NEW] streamtuner fails to start - segmentation fault

2009-05-28 Thread mikeys
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

I have jaunty x64. Streamtuner refuses to start. Reinstalled from
synaptic - no change. From command line - if you try to start w/out
sudo, it shows segmentation fault. If you start with sudo
streamtuner it starts and plays, but if you hit search it dies
instantly and disappears off the screen every time. Also, when it opens
under sudo, the genre column looks weird, not like before - no listing
for sub-genres. Why is this killer app still being ignored??

Does anyone care enough to help with this issue?? I changed audacious
%q to xmms %q as it used to be before jaunty and it worked perfect. I
also do not have audacious which looks horrible in x64.

[Bug 157776] Re: No en_GB option

2009-05-28 Thread Alan Jenkins
In the duplicate I filed, my objection is that this applies to the _Live
CD_ environment. I think Live CDs are quite important, and being able
to type the @ character on a UK keyboard is quite important to us in the
UK.

If a new user is taking Ubuntu for a spin, I think they'd really
appreciate being prompted for a keyboard layout, perhaps at login time?
Rather than discovering this later. I'd hate to find I had a working
internet connection and browser, but not be able to type an email
address, e.g. to log in to Google Mail.

[Bug 381196] [NEW] network card/driver (sis190) doesn't notice when cable is unplugged

2009-05-28 Thread George Guimaraes
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. My dmesg shows that my ethernet card is:
sis190 Gigabit Ethernet driver 1.2

When I disconnect my network cable, nothing happens. Network Manager
still believe the cable is in, syslog shows no messages. If I reconnect
the cable, again, nothing happens (not even syslog messages). But the
network hangs.

The only way to recover is to run:
sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart

Then, the nm-applet shows Wired - eth0 disconnected and after a while
eth0 connected (or something like that).
