[Bug 381269] [NEW] NUT fails to shutdown UPS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nut It's barely possible that Ubuntu isn't vulnerable to this - I discovered it, and did the actual smoke tests, on a Debian Lenny machine. The problem is that the nut init script's powerdown function relies on calling upsmon -K at a very late point, and that command fails, whcih causes the script to imagine that the kill ups file is not present. The reason for the failure is quite simple: ma...@furrr:~$ ldd /sbin/upsmon linux-vdso.so.1 = (0x745fe000) libupsclient.so.1 = /usr/lib/libupsclient.so.1 (0x7f49ec001000) libc.so.6 = /lib/libc.so.6 (0x7f49ebc8f000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x7f49ec207000) I think we would all have to agree that there's no real use placing an executable into /sbin when it depends on a library in /usr/lib, yes? This issue exists present in Debian Lenny and Ubuntu Interpid. It probably also affects Hardy and Gutsy, though they have a different sub- minor version number; however, Debian Etch, with nut 2.0.4, already has that in its init script. Etch is not affected by this bug because its upsmon does NOT have the /usr/lib/libupsclient.so dependency. I haven't any machines handy with Jaunty to check at this time. ** Affects: nut (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- NUT fails to shutdown UPS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381269 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to nut in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Blueprint server-karmic-encrypted-swap-as-an-option] Encrypted Swap as an Option
Blueprint changed by Daniel T Chen: Whiteboard changed to: Discussion Points: * UDS Buy-in (main use case is hibernate): * karmic implementation: * encrypted home in installer - setup swap encryption (ecryptfs-setup-swap), document hibernation incompatibility * randomly generate key on boot (no passphrase wrapping) * open wishlist bug for hibernation resume support * need UI changes to Applications Accessories Passwords and Encryption Keys * post-karmic implementation (hard): * algorithm: wrap randomly generated password with PAM system passphrase on login (for multiple users), store in LUKS keyslot * teach resume scripts to prompt for user's wrapping passphrase on resume, decrypt swap, resume * possible regressions and workarounds: * /tmp contents are still viewable, worked around in short term by using tmpfs for /tmp when system has some amount X of RAM, worked around in long term by moving /tmp into ~/.tmp * additional notes: * see who is using encrypted home and encrypted swap * Original suggested design: * encrypt swap, using a randomly generated key every boot * by default, use a static wrapping password like ubuntu, and store the wrapped swap key in LUKS * teach hibernation resume (init?) to try this static default passphrase first * if that doesn't work, then prompt the user for the wrapping passphrase * in System-Administration, provide a utility that allows the administrator switch from the insecure default ubuntu wrapping passphrase to a PAM-based wrapping passphrase * teach PAM to take a successful login passphrase and re-wrap the randomly generated swap passphrase with the login passphrase if secure swap is enabled, (possibly populating 1 or more of the LUKS keyslots) * On hibernate event, ensure that the current user's passphrase has been used to wrap the swap passphrase in one of the LUKS keyslots * would need to prompt for a passphrase here, if this was an auto-login and the user wants secure-swap -- Dustin Kirkland (steve.langasek) When I migrated my laptop from hardy to intrepid, I turned on encrypted swap at the same time (swap LV on top of LVM+encryption). Anything that makes heavy use of swap on my desktop now brings the whole system to its knees. Please be cognizant of performance issues when implementing this - I fear this may be untenable as a default for desktop systems. (Roderick Greening) It would never be expected to encrypt a swap file which exists in a LVM encrypted drive. Given that to build a LVM system, you have to use the alternate cd, the user would be in total control of these choices. Via the regular live CD/DVD, LVM is not a option (that I recall), so encrypting the swap by default should not be problematic. (Paul Klapperich) As far as encrypted swap working with hibernate, it sounds like this goes nicely on computers that have a TPM as per the second link. I don't have one to test. For computers without a tpm, I don't know how ecryptfs works, but for luks we could perhaps use a pam module to hold the user account password for the duration of the login and set it as an alternate key for the luks swap partition (which previously had a random key only) if the user initiates a hibernate. Alternatively a global swap password could be created instead of (or somehow in addition to) random key encryption, but that's an extra password that now all users of the system would be required to know. It would, however, allow a resume from hibernate followed by a switch user if the person who hibernated is not present. (Przemysław Kulczycki) Will this block the system's ability to write crash dumps to swap partition and to save it from swap partition to file after a reboot? (Jerone Young) How can we start talking about something like this being by default when it has not even had field testing. If Jaunty is about stability this is not the way to go. Also since (from what I know) this is not being done in the kernel but rather in userspace, which is going to cause big performance issues when writing to swap. Another thing is where are the keys kept to decrypt the swap? How is a machine going to wake up from hibernation? This also will not work with the grub fast hibernation patches. Not a good idea to do at this time. -- Encrypted Swap as an Option https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/server-karmic-encrypted-swap-as-an-option -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 304265] Re: Dialogs too big for screen size, can't reach all options
Yep, same here on Jaunty. Though I've had this problem since back with 6.04 and not just with VLC. I don't recall the other apps that have this problem, but man is it frustrating. I'm not sure if it is an error on the app's part for not letting the OS manage the dialogue box, or else Ubuntu is not dynamically sizing or scrolling the box to match the user's screen resolution settings. Since apps like Control Panel scroll properly, I'm going to guess it's the fault of VLC and other apps for setting a fixed dialogue box size and not letting Ubuntu manage it. -- Dialogs too big for screen size, can't reach all options https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/304265 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 219276] Re: Please sync parrot (1.0.0-1) from Debian unstable
Okay, I've got it. Apparently on karmic, lpia builds with -Os by default (thanks to Robert Collins for digging up that tip). Among other things, -Os disables the -falign-functions optimization (in order to save space). Parrot can build with or without aligned function pointers, but it was detecting lpia as ordinary i386, and so expecting them, and failing on an assert. I added a config patch to detect the lpia architecture (using the -gnulp element of the arch-os-gnu triplet) and correctly set Parrot's config value for aligned_funcptr to 0. [Bug 375352] Re: Karmic desktop CD fails to boot because of different squashfs versions
casper isn't responsible for this - the bug is simply in the squashfs package. It should have been left there rather than bounced around all over the place. :-) Although this bug is fairly trivial in itself, the reason we hadn't fixed this until now was that there was basically no point in doing so until we had a reasonable solution for a union filesystem in Karmic, given that aufs is apparently no longer particularly sanely supportable on the 2.6.30 kernel. I've been on the road, which slowed things down, but I got unionfs-fuse working earlier this week as a stopgap measure until we get proper VFS-level union mounts in the kernel (which are coming soon), so it's now worthwhile to deal with this. ** Changed in: casper (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- Karmic desktop CD fails to boot because of different squashfs versions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/375352 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In the past 6 days, I've installed ubuntu jaunty 9.04 64bit on a new T500 laptop no less than 6 times. As others here report, I would start doing updates/upgrades, and shortly afterward would run into various issues which appear to all be symptoms of corrupted filesystem: * Faulty tree errors doing apt-get update * Errors about /var/lib/dpkg/status content * Errors about /var/lib/dpkg/info/something.list having blank lines Then, at some point, dmesg would indicate that there was some ext3-fs or ext4-fs issue, and that journaling is aborted, and that the filesystem is remounted read-only, which would of course then cause all variety of desktop app misbehavior. A coworker with another T500 that was shipped with mine, is experiencing the same issue on his hardware. Another coworker with a T500, who got theirs in a different order, had been running Jaunty 64bit for a month now with no such problems, so we started to compare lspci output to see what chips might differ in the two T500's that would have one work solidly for a month while the other can't go 36 hours without corrupting its fs. The only glaring difference we could see was that his laptop, which wasn't experiencing any problems, had a disk controller with device 20f8, using ahci driver, while mine was using the same model controller, but was listed with a device id 20f7, and which was controlled by ata_piix driver. Kernel driver in use: ata_piix I discovered that I could switch my disk controller device from 20f7 to 20f8, and use the ahci driver instead of ata_piix driver by going into my Bios settings, and under Config for the SATA controller, set it to AHCI instead of compatible. I'd suggest that compatible mode might have had issues, except from the amount of complaints here, it's just as likely that ata_piix is buggy when used on this hardware. It'll be a couple days before I'm 100% comfortable that the issue is resolved for me, but I'm pretty sure switching the disk controller/behavior to match what has been working for other coworkers should account for the only difference between their hardware setup which hasn't run into this issue, and mine, which hadn't been able to escape it. -- Corrupted file system ext3 after Jaunty 64 upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371191 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Soft or hard mounted, still does the same thing. Release: Ubuntu 9.04 Unable to get package version as apt-cache fails with the same message. /etc/apt/sources.list attached - I can't see anything wrong with it but there may well be an issue there... ** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- update-manager is non-operational https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381195 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 381194] [NEW] streamtuner fails to start - segmentation fault
*** This bug is a security vulnerability *** Public security bug reported: I have jaunty x64. Streamtuner refuses to start. Reinstalled from synaptic - no change. From command line - if you try to start w/out sudo, it shows segmentation fault. If you start with sudo streamtuner it starts and plays, but if you hit search it dies instantly and disappears off the screen every time. Also, when it opens under sudo, the genre column looks weird, not like before - no listing for sub-genres. Why is this killer app still being ignored?? Does anyone care enough to help with this issue?? I changed audacious %q to xmms %q as it used to be before jaunty and it worked perfect. I also do not have audacious which looks horrible in x64. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Visibility changed to: Public -- streamtuner fails to start - segmentation fault https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381194 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 157776] Re: No en_GB option
In the duplicate I filed, my objection is that this applies to the _Live CD_ environment. I think Live CDs are quite important, and being able to type the @ character on a UK keyboard is quite important to us in the UK. If a new user is taking Ubuntu for a spin, I think they'd really appreciate being prompted for a keyboard layout, perhaps at login time? Rather than discovering this later. I'd hate to find I had a working internet connection and browser, but not be able to type an email address, e.g. to log in to Google Mail. -- No en_GB option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157776 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 381197] [NEW] X hangs when scrolling in firefox
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Occasionally when scrolling in Firefox, X hangs so that the mouse pointer still moves, but I can't click or type, I can't switch to a different console and I can't zap X. I need to hard power off the machine. I've seen this happen about four times in the fast month in Jaunty, always when using Firefox. This is on a Thinkpad X61s. [Bug 381196] [NEW] network card/driver (sis190) doesn't notice when cable is unplugged
Public bug reported: I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. My dmesg shows that my ethernet card is: sis190 Gigabit Ethernet driver 1.2 When I disconnect my network cable, nothing happens. Network Manager still believe the cable is in, syslog shows no messages. If I reconnect the cable, again, nothing happens (not even syslog messages). But the network hangs. The only way to recover is to run: sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart Then, the nm-applet shows Wired - eth0 disconnected and after a while eth0 connected (or something like that).
