[Bug 213494] Re: Glipper dies when desktop starting

2009-06-09 Thread Udo Güngerich
Hi there,

I'm running Jaunty and are (since Hardy) experiencing the same problems.

I followed this thread which I only found today (luckily).

I spent some two hours to dig a little into the problem and found that
its got to do (as others above pointed out already) with some little
gnome inside the code ;)

I first suspected gobject.threads_init() as other resources pointed out,
that time and order of calls matter in PyGTK.

Then, as a first step, I added logging to see how far Glipper would
fare:

It is merely starting up before it crashes.

Being intrigued by this and by the fact that it really only happens at
boot time, I started to write this patch (see attachment).

For now after the first successful (re-)boot (done a far few by now)
test, Glipper *did not* crash with this code in place!

I'd be really curious whether it'll help others, so please give it a
try!

Best regards,

Udo

[Bug 294522] Re: Synaptic package manager just showing installed app when using search function

2009-06-09 Thread Russell
Just hit this one with a fresh 9.04 install. Strange, as every other
install of 9.04 I've done _worked_.

Ben's fix, however, doesn't help in this instance - I still only see
packages that are installed when using quicksearch.

Using single-letter full searches works (as in I get packages that
aren't installed, but searching using only a single letter is next to
useless).

[Bug 385077] Re: New frames come up black in Jaunty

2009-06-09 Thread Russel Winder
I guess we just have to leave the first point then. Sad but seemingly
unfixable.

Could the second point be a BIOS settings issue? There seems to be
hints that some people have gotten round this problem by having
different BIOS settings.

Not sure how to check the vram in use so as to compare with your set up.
The NVIDIA X Server Settings reports my GeForce 6200 as having 256MB
memory. System Monitor reports Xorg as having 105MB memory and 315MB
virtual memory with 105MB resident.

[Bug 384044] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 live CD crashes on boot

2009-06-09 Thread Andy Whitcroft
This has been reported a number of times against the -server kernel but
not against the -generic kernel before. It would be good to get the eip
there translated as it may help us identify what is going wrong. This
kind of error only occurs very early in boot before a proper handler has
been registered. What we need is the System.map-*-generic file off of
the CD on which you reproduced this issue. If you don't have the CD any
more perhaps you could reproduce with a current CD and if still there
include that System.map. Thanks in advance!

I got what happens to me. After hibernation (when notebook recovers

exactly as if I pressed power button (but I didn't!!). So if I am not
quick enough (60 seconds) system will shutdown automatically as expected
when you press power button and wait. I hope i've been clear...

[Bug 385160] Re: kubuntu-desktop needs to replace xfs package

2009-06-09 Thread Jonathan Thomas
xfs is not a dependency of kubuntu-desktop. (Otherwise it'd be on the default
Kubuntu CD, but it can't since its a universe package)
It could be that some dependency of kubuntu-desktop is pulling it in as a
recommends. If you don't want this to happen, you can apt-get install it with
the --no-install-recommends flag or use a graphical package manager that
supports installing things without recommends.

[Bug 174185] Re: Occasionally, disk goes crazy, system freezes

2009-06-09 Thread Stefan Bader
Closing this bug for now as there hasn't been no response to the initial
problem for a long time. Generally the symptoms could point to an
application rapidly eating up memory until swap space is exhausted.
Please reopen if this is still an issue in the current Ubuntu release,
Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. If
the issue remains in Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel
build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . To reopen the
bug, click on the current status under the Status column and change the

[Bug 321126] Re: Fan constantly running - Dell XPS M1530

2009-06-09 Thread mac.ryan
Just to mention that I am experiencing the same problem with DELL XPS
M1710 on ubuntu 64 bit (both 8.10 and 8.04).

The system randomly get the fans running at full speed despite the
system monitor report CPU usage below 25% and temperature below 40
degrees.

When the fans kick in, the system slow down so much that the only viable
option is rebooting; besides, the CPU and GPU hibernate in the real
sense of the word, with their temperature plummeting below 25 degrees.

On ubuntu forums there has been some speculation the problem might be
related to the graphic card. I have an nVidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX
running proprietary driver version 180.44

there is no obvious way from pygtk to determine that an init function

[Bug 371095] Re: [i855] Intel Video completely unusable in Jaunty

2009-06-09 Thread Dave M G
Hello. Original reporter here.

Sorry for not responding.

Problem was solved by reverting the xorg driver as suggested by Eddie
Padilla above.

The trick to getting around the startx command problems that I had
reported earlier was to use ctrl+alt+F7 instead. For whatever reason,
that worked.

Thank you for having taken the time to consider my issue, and I hope
future versions of Ubuntu will handle this issue a little more smoothly.

[Bug 385186] [NEW] Buggy reception of rs232 sequence in ubuntu 9.04

Public bug reported:

Trying to receive the following r232 sequence (9600N81) on ttyS0 with Serial
port terminal
d1 fa fb 00 0a ff. This sequence is sent by another PC with a null modem cable
which works in XP. In ubuntu 9.04 I receive distorted data, mostly unpredictable
following 00.
The same happens to a real device which is connected to ubuntu using an normal
rs232 wire.

Sending data from the Ubuntu machine to an XP machine works OK.
Ubunto 2 Ubuntu I get the same faulty data.

Tested this with several machines in our lab and I always get the same
behaviour. Also this is an issue with 8.10 I was able to test on.

[Bug 180507] Re: [Nvidia]seemingly random kernel panic; keyboard light

2009-06-09 Thread Amit Kucheria
Since the Nvidia driver is binary, we can't do anything about it. Your
best bet is to try a newer version of the driver in a newer release.

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the
previous inquiry for information. Please reopen if this is still an
issue in the current Ubuntu release, Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 -
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. If the issue remains in
Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel build -
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . To reopen the bug, click
on the current status under the Status column and change the status back
to New. Thanks.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Won't Fix

[Bug 385187] [NEW] spumux massive memory leak

2009-06-09 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvdauthor

spumux has a massive, machine crippling, memory leak. By the time I
killed it, it was using 5.5GB of virtual memory and 723GB of physical
memory and thrashing the machine. It would appear that the program is
failing to free one or more pixmaps per frame.

 18906 whitis20 0 5575m 723m 404 D 7.3 73.2 0:41.99 spumux

spumux was invoked from dvdstyler on the following files.
wget http://www.sub-titles.net/ppodnapisi/download/i/462902
unzip 04a53dc32fd4c4ee14c54edee58df00fa7325f3f.zip
mv The\ Hunt\ For\ Gollum.eng.srt subtitles_en.srt

 huntforgollum_720p.flv
 time ffmpeg -i huntforgollum_720p.flv -target film-dvd huntforgollum_720p.mpg

spumux /tmp/dvd/title0-0-0.vob_spumux.xml

The vob_spumux.xml file was deleted when killed. It contained little
more than the name of the .srt file.

spumux did produce one warning that a single subtitle was too long.
