[Bug 567188] [NEW] krb5 and ADS error using 10.04, not 9.04
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Environment: The installed distributions use kerberos and likewise to identify the user to an Active Directory Server. The client configuration on 9.04 is basic and efficient. I use the same configuration file (krb5.conf) on 10.04. Kerberos and likewise come from ubuntu repository for each distribution (9.04 and 10.04). Description: Using 9.04 to auth with kerberos/likewise works fine: tickets ok, everything is done login in one time only. Using 10.04 to auth the same way leads to an error and forbids the access: user login ok but the access to other ressources is forbidden, most often returning: KRB Error: KRB5KDC_ERR_S_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN. The likewise-open5 versions used are the same on both distributions. I tested with same versions of kerberos on both distributions and i got the same results. I thought the KRB5KDC_ERR_S_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN was related to a dns problem but when i solved this the following appears: the client sends a TGS_REQ, containing the Encryption type: rc4-hmac (23), to the server. the server answers KRB5KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP (14) 10.04 sends a section Authenticator rc4-hmac (23) in PA-TGS-REQ , 9.04 doesn't. There's no such error using ubuntu-9.04. I grab theses informations sniffing the local network with wireshark. Is there anybody experiencing the same problems ? I really don't consider this High importance at all[1], and I doubt this will get fixed any time soon, if ever. To be perfectly honest, I have a hard time taking it seriously that it's supposedly a severe impediment to anyone. It's /trivial/ to work around if you know what OS you're running in the guest. Just do whatever you usually do to shut it down and start it back up again a little while later. Severe impact for a small number of users is stuff like a few hundred users of a particular piece of hardware being unable to boot, for instance, not 5-6 people who feel mildly inconvenienced by something that takes them all but a few seconds to work around. In the grand scheme of things, the importance setting is supposed to work as a tool for developers to decide which bugs to work on. Across thousands of packages, it's really not very useful to have stuff like this ranking the same as people's kernels hanging on boot, system lock-ups, firefox going all weird on upgrades, or whatever. As for 'no portable way...to reboot...', most (if not all) OS's respect ACPI. Certainly not all do. That's the problem. That's what portable means. I'm not even sure Ubuntu supports it. I'm rarely near a machine with a reset button, so can't check, but at least looking at the acpid package, I don't see anything that causes the system to reboot in response to /anything/, and specifically I don't see a handler for any sort of reset event. And, in a similar vein, if you can walk up to a physical machine, most physical machines will gracefully shutdown when the power button is pressed, so I don't see your point #6 It's simple, really. most != all, so it fails the portable requirement. So, imagine we make libvirt send the acpi shutdown event, wait until the guest has shut down, and then start it again.. What if the OS never shuts down when you issue the acpi event? Should the call just never return? Or should it return immediately and just never succeed in rebooting the guest? So you would have the call hang for some amount of time until you decide that by then it should have shut down and then return failure? How long would you suggest? Remember, libvirt API calls are not asynchronous, so this is a concern that needs to be addressed. We can't just have the call tentatively return succesfully and then later call back into the calling application telling it that it didn't work out. For fully virtualised guests, I really believe you'd be better off with a tool that knows about the guests in question and that can Do The Right Thing. The Right Thing may be to send a shutdown, wait a while, if nothing has happened, send a destroy, and then start up the guest again. libvirt can't (and IMO shouldn't) decide what The Right Thing is for a particular guest. Some guests may have shutdown sequences that take a long time, which is perfectly reasonable. Others may not carry state at all and just need to be destroyed and started again. In other words, it's virtually impossible make a general decision about a timeout for this that isn't either too long to be useful in the case of a guest that has simply hung (and thus will not respond to a reboot request, if it even has such a mechanism) or too short and causes data loss because a guest didn't get to shut down properly. This is the curse (and blessing, depending on your POV) of fully virtualised virtual machines. Now, we could extend the domain definition XML to have it define said timeout, that seems clumsy to me. [Bug 368962] Re: Can't reboot kvm virtual machines using virsh
Oh, by the way, as for most OS's support ACPI, an Ubuntu Server installation does not do so out of the box. I consider that a bug, by the way, but nevertheless, that is the case and has been years. So, if this feature depended on the guest OS handling ACPI events at all, it'd sadly fail on Ubuntu. -- Can't reboot kvm virtual machines using virsh https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368962 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
Re: [Bug 368962] Re: Can't reboot kvm virtual machines using virsh
On 25 April 2010 16:20, Soren Hansen so...@ubuntu.com wrote: So you would have the call hang for some amount of time until you decide that by then it should have shut down and then return failure? How long would you suggest? Remember, libvirt API calls are not asynchronous, so Pick a number. it's a synchronous call. Where's the 80% case? Anybody else can use the underlying primitives and poll a bit longer/shorter. this is a concern that needs to be addressed. We can't just have the call tentatively return succesfully and then later call back into the calling application telling it that it didn't work out. It'll only return successful if a call to the libvirt status element returns 'off' during the poll period and it was able to successfully issue 'boot'. For fully virtualised guests, I really believe you'd be better off with a tool that knows about the guests in question and that can Do The Right Excellent. Where is said tool? Exactly. So why not implement something that is useful for most people. Simples Sorry, but I beg to differ. If not, I'd have done this a long, long time ago. I have to deal with this (rebooting guests) on a reasonably regular basis. Don't you think you are searching for perfection rather than implementing something that is 'good enough' for the majority of uses? Get it to log a warning if you're worried about bugs. At the moment *everybody* has to implement 'shutdown, poll for a bit, startup' (or would do if the acpi scripts worked). I've just written another one this week, whereas a default one that hung around for a bit and worked with a standard Ubuntu server would have been plenty good enough. -- Neil Wilson -- Can't reboot kvm virtual machines using virsh https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368962 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

So in the succesful case, the call will take as long as the VM takes to shut down, and in the failure case, it'd take some amount of time longer (and in the case of the VM not having ACPI enabled, it'll be instantaneous). I don't know, really. I'm not super hot on the idea of function calls that block for that long. Maybe I'm just too used to writing async code these days. :) For fully virtualised guests, I really believe you'd be better off with a tool that knows about the guests in question and that can Do The Right Excellent. Where is said tool? That's the point. I don't know what's running in your VM's, so I can't write the tool for you. Chances are that said tool wouldn't even be using libvirt to do it (in which case libvirt obviously can't (or at least very much shouldn't)) help you. If an OS doesn't support or respond correctly to ACPI events, you may want to connect to it over SSH and issue a command or maybe connect to it over VNC and send it a ctrl-alt-delete. Simples Sorry, but I beg to differ. If not, I'd have done this a long, long time ago. I have to deal with this (rebooting guests) on a reasonably regular basis. Don't you think you are searching for perfection rather than implementing something that is 'good enough' for the majority of uses? I think I just have different measures of good enough. Get it to log a warning if you're worried about bugs. At the moment *everybody* has to implement 'shutdown, poll for a bit, startup' (or would do if the acpi scripts worked). I've just written another one this week, whereas a default one that hung around for a bit and worked with a standard Ubuntu server would have been plenty good enough. ...and as I've said, what you're suggesting would not work with Ubuntu Server out of the box, so it's a moot point. The only thing I can think of that would work out of the box on Ubuntu Server is something that would send ctrl-alt-delete to the guest. -- Soren Hansen Ubuntu Developer http://www.ubuntu.com/ -- Can't reboot kvm virtual machines using virsh https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368962 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 569653] Re: Lucid freezes on boot
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: packagekit A couple of weeks ago I sintalled the new prerelease of lucid. The first installation went OK; but when I later upgraded the packages I could no longer boot this partition. I have a number of kernels installed (enclose menu.lst). Out of these kernels the only one that I can use to log onto the system are the recovery versions of 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.28-18; all the other freeze during the boot. If I start in recovery mode, and then start up X-windows, then I seem to loose the keyboard and the mouse, so I have to revert to the on/off button to close the system. By using one of these old kernels I was yesterday able to update the system so that it is now supposedly the current version of the LTS lucid, but I still have the same problem when booting. - I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest - kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by - starting up an older karmik kernel. + I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by starting up an older karmik kernel. + --- + AlsaDevices: + total 0 + drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 2010-04-25 08:49 by-id + drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 80 2010-04-25 08:49 by-path + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3. + AplayDevices: aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found... + Architecture: i386 + ArecordDevices: arecord: device_list:223: no soundcards found... + AudioDevicesInUse: Error: command ['fuser', '-v', '/dev/dsp', '/dev/dsp1', '/dev/snd/by-path', '/dev/snd/by-id', '/dev/sequencer2', '/dev/sequencer', '/dev/seq'] failed with exit code 1: + CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + CurrentDmesg: + [ 30.656010] eth0: no IPv6 routers present + [ 87.016018] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -117240025 ns) + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=/dev/sdb5 + IwConfig: + lono wireless extensions. + + eth0 no wireless extensions. + MachineType: To Be Filled By O.E.M. Re: [Bug 472157] Re: Uncertain Auto-bug Submission - but need help with broken audio controls
Hi Jeremy, Thanks for the followup. I have to date not yet been able to get the volume to be adjustable within the Gnome interface (using the control next to the clock), but was successful in installing a mixer application and controlling it (but still not by the multimedia buttons). I would propose closing this activity- unless there is demand from anyone else in the community. Best Regards, Marc On Apr 22, 2010, at 3:29 PM, Jeremy Foshee jeremy.fos...@canonical.com wrote: Hi Marc, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 472157 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. [Bug 569660] [NEW] Design Studio SIGSEGV While Testing HelloWorld - libxul.so
Public bug reported: Config: Karmic Koala and CE running on Ubuntu server. This started as a problem getting Design Studio to display the Test screen for HelloWorld.xaction in Getting Started. There's a thread in the Community Forum on this. I found a dependence missing: libxpcom.so. As locate found it in a xul directory, Synaptic reported that package xulrunner provided XUL and XPCOM so I installed it. Presto, Design Studio can display the test screen but a lot of things got removed, e.g. firefox and eclipse, so this was a concern. I started the BI Server, loaded HelloWorld.xaction into Design Studio, configure it with name and message, then selected the Test capability. Presto, Design Studio can GenerateURL for the action sequence but, when attempting to Test Server I get the SIGSEGV. OK, so I guess xulrunner is obsolete and I went back to xulrunner-1.9.1 then reinstalled the things that got removed. Presto, I can't Test HelloWorld again but firefox is back. It may be that the symbolic links to xul libraries in /usr/lib have not been correctly updated to reflect the latest (?) version 1.9.1.9. I'll investigate tomorrow and fiddle with the symbolic links trying to have everything point to 1.9.1.9 as is possible.
