[Bug 600808] Re: git-gui fonts are aliased

2010-07-03 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Yes, bitmap fonts look terrible (especially when scaled), which is why
the world has moved on to antialiased fonts. You can try changing the
default font in Edit → Options after opening a repository, or you can
enable antialiasing by switching to Tk 8.5 with the commands I gave you
in comment 2.

I’m afraid there is nothing else that can be done about this until Tk
8.5 becomes the default version of Tk, so I’m closing this report.
Don’t hesitate to report any other bugs you find.

[Bug 568064] Re: Wacom new bamboo models are not recognized in Lucid

2010-07-03 Thread pererik87
I made a blog post about the taylor package and new wacoms on Ubuntu,
its raking in a average of 5 hits a day on a blog with total average of
about 40 hits per day. This is a problem for many more people than this
bug report gives it impression of. This bug affects at least 2000
people, probably more.

Mark,

Thanks for your report. This is a frustrating bug that has been
reported upstream over two years ago and is costing people real money.

I have added your report to the upstream report, but please feel free to

Subject: [Pkg-hpijs-devel] Bug#587578: hplip: adaptive greyscale (don't use
color to print black, it's expensive)
Date: Wednesday 30 June 2010, 08:11:36
From: Mark Hedges hed...@scriptdolphin.com
To: Debian Bug Tracking System sub...@bugs.debian.org

Package: hplip
Version: 3.10.5-1
Severity: wishlist

It seems like when I print a page of black text using the
default 'Normal Color' printer setting, it uses the color
cartridge to print black. I notice this when the color
catridge runs out of ink or when the paper jams and it
prints only one or two colors instead of all of them.
The color cartridge is for printing color. The black ink
cartridge is for printing black, and is less expensive.
As a result, I have to selectively print pages that might
have color pictures on them, and switch to 'Normal Greyscale'
to print pages that do not. There ought to be a way for
the driver to detect whether it is printing b/w or color,
and use the appropriate cartridge for the appropriate pixels.

Thanks.
Mark

[Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos

2010-07-03 Thread themuddler
I share Aaron's use-case of storing the photos on my server at home.
The photos are presently tagged in Shotwell on my laptop. If my wife
wants to browse them in their organised state on her laptop, then I
either need to find a way of sharing Shotwell's db file or to host in on
the server. Alternatively, having the info stored in each photo might
do the trick but less efficiently. I'd like the option to occasionally
'update all changed meta-data' in order to ensure that my sorting isn't
lost in the future upon reinstalling etc...

Thanks for the great software.

[Bug 525457] Re: translation line 428: hardware should be the hardware

2010-07-03 Thread Ronald McCollam
While this may be true in some languages, in English the definite
article (the) is needed in this case.

Without use of a definite article, no specific hardware is referred to.
In this case, it's any hardware anywhere that is being checked. (That
is, hardware without a definite article is using the implicit zero
article[1], which usually refers to an indefinite quantity or non-count
nouns. Using no article implies that hardware is plural but does not
specify which hardware or how many pieces of hardware are being referred
to.)

With the use of a definite article[2], it becomes apparent that this
specific instance of hardware is being referred to.

After all that :) , might I suggest a compromise like

Check that your system is able to run compiz.?

Hardware here is a bit geeky and not as user-friendly, in my opinion.

(Sorry folks, reopening as I think this is a valid bug.)

 environment variable EDITOR.

Explains why it works when run from a shell as I have the EDITOR env
 variable set in my .bashrc.

 However, it also says:
 Default is getenv(VISUAL) || getenv(EDITOR) || emacs

This isn't true for the Debian package since Debian (and probably
Ubuntu, too) has its own default editor sensible-editor for
determining the right editor. Conkeror in Debian and Ubuntu is patched
to facilitate this feature.

Not sure if there's any local documentation in the package about this,
but if so, it's probably not patched.

Regards, Axel

[Bug 601497] [NEW] Connecting to Jigzone.com causes Firefox to close.

2010-07-03 Thread Richard C. Steffens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
- About Ubuntu.

~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS
Release:8.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

Not sure what you're looking for, but here's what I get with Help
About Mozilla Firefox:

Firefox
version 3.6.6

Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu
canonical - 1.0

Mozilla/5.0 (X11: U: Linux i686: en-us:
rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100630 Ubuntu/8.04
(hardy) Firefox/3.6.6

3) What you expected to happen

I expected to be presented with the daily jigsaw puzzle at:
http://www.jigzone.com/puzzles/daily-jigsaw

4) What happened instead

When I click the down-arrow to the right of the location entry box, the
link to jigzone is always at the top of the list. When I clicked on it
today, the first time since the recent updates via Ubuntu's update
manager, Firefox closes both windows I have open. I can get back to them
both, but if I try to go to jigzone again, Firefox closes. I also tried
going to jigzone without letting Firefox restore the previous sessions
and got the same result -- Firefox closes.

[Bug 581659] Re: Mouse cursor jumps when two fingers are used

2010-07-03 Thread madmed
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 365943 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365943

@Gursimran: the bug #365943 is marked as fixed, I reopened it and Bryce
Harrington restored it to fix released and asked me to report a new bug instead
of reopening that bug (c.f
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/365943/comments/30).
I think this bug report contains more information than the other one and
should not be marked as duplicate.
What do you think?

[Bug 579117] Re: Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts

2010-07-03 Thread Chris Hermansen
Today's experiment - try it with Kubuntu.

I still get noise floor calibration timeout messages.

However, I have listened to 10 songs or so now and no skipping. Also no
alsa messages in the log.

Watching latencytop run, I still see the big latencies for Scheduler:
waiting for cpu from time to time (317ms just now; three refreshes
later with nothing greater than 50ms, there was just a 266ms). But no
skipping/stuttering, and still no error messages in dmesg.

David, if you're still watching... above you mention trying a different
kernel. Is this just a matter of using Synaptic to get a different
kernel from the repos (like the rt kernel)? Or is there more to it than
that?

Is there any way to try it without pulseaudio to see if the problem
appears to go away?

[Bug 601244] Re: over heat message from BIOS on reboot

2010-07-03 Thread Lance Colton
The message is incorrect madbiologist. the fans work properly, the
message is the result of an incompatibility in the kernel. I can boot to
the login screen immediately shut down with fans blowing on it and
perfect circulation and still get the message (have tried it.) and I am
not the only one.

the problem probably has to deal with non-standard hardware from HP, and
lack of support from the kernel.

[Bug 601299] Re: maverick btrfs slow install

2010-07-03 Thread Conn O Griofa
I can confirm the same issue; installation via the alpha 2 32bit
alternate media takes ~2 hours when installing to a btrfs partition,
compared to ~15 minutes to ext4. I'm not sure that system specs are
necessary, because I don't think this is a bug (or if it is, it should
be addressed upstream).

There's an old thread on the linux-btrfs list[1] which mentions a
similar problem, so perhaps btrfs' performance characteristics are
unfavourable towards file activity related to package
unpacking/installation.

[Bug 365881] Re: wubi installer's pyrun.exe says no disk

2010-07-03 Thread William Bass
Hi Ray,

How interesting, just yesterday I also sent an idea for a patch via
email to Agostino Russo. I didn't even notice the patch system here.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I looked at your patch, but just to let you know -- for me, at least --
get_filesystem() also causes the error for me GetVolumeInformationA
method is the culprit in that one).

I have recommended that he use ctypes.windll.kernel32.SetErrorMode(1) at
the beginning of the Drive class's __init__() to suppress the pop-up and
ctypes.windll.kernel32.SetErrorMode(0) at the end to return windows back
to the default state (regarding this pop-up, at least)...

I had wanted to do something like this when I first found the bugI
figured out the Drive class was probably the culprit but I didn't know
anything about Python, so a week ago, I studied Python just enough to
track this bug down and write a possible correction. Glad to see others
are thinking along these lines, too.

[Bug 598542] Re: Open VM Tools FTBS on Maverick 2.6.35

2010-07-03 Thread Nate Muench
I have taken the liberty to rebuild open-vm-tools package available in
Maverick, this time I included the patches available in this report.
Launchpad's Build was successful and the building of the modules using
module assistant was also successful. I've added (or copied, from one of
my other PPAs, to be more accurate) packages to my regular PPA.
https://launchpad.net/~n-muench/+archive/ppa

Also Debian released their build of the newest upstream open-vm-tools
(available via GIT). I did 2 builds with their release, one without the
patches and one with the patches. The first one failed. However I did
a raw compile (without pbuilder) and I've noticed that the vsock patch
doesn't work with the new release. The second build (with the vmxnet
patch and using pbuilder), successfully built on my Maverick VM. The
install also went successfully with one issue. The following error
occurred during install:

[Bug 541937] Re: Copying files to USB flash drive is extremely slow

2010-07-03 Thread kkietzke
I apologize for not having time to really test this, but hopefully this
info will help someone who has time...

I encountered a similar problem to Adam Porter's comment #5, using
grsync. I tried again, leaving the computer alone overnight, and when I
woke up the next morning, it was frozen. I'm trying it again using cp
from the command line, and gkrellm is showing me something rather
interesting. I'm copying from the internal drive (just a normal drive,
not solid state) to an external usb hard drive. It appears that the
output to the external drive is being buffered, and when the buffer is
being flushed, it is consistently hitting a max of 30MB/sec. However,
the transfer rate from the internal drive has been creeping down; if I
remember correctly it started out at around 10MB/sec and at this point
it's down to 2.2MB/sec and still creeping down. I think I'm going to
kill the copy and reboot - it has only copied 14GB of a 30GB file, and I
strongly suspect that it will freeze before it finishes at the rate
things are going. I guess I'll have to boot off my karmic flash drive
to copy this file...

I'm running lucid on an Asus Eee PC 1005ha. I have seen the slow copy
problem before in nautilus, but it's never frozen like this. I think a
recent patch may have broken it.

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-07-03 Thread ZachG
1) I can confirm everything Matt has said so far on my machine. iwpriv -a is
definitely the cause of the problem
2) Obviously I cant copy paste so good from a non-X vt on a machine that has
had a kernel panic. I took a photo however (attached)

3) It looks like it crashes on an ioctl (surprise, surprise). Sadly the exact
ioctl isnt there? It shows me ioctl(0x8bec) which looks like memory somehow
got corrupted and its passing a bad ioctl? There is another suspicious ioctl
before the crash without a macro mapping, 0x8be5. I'm going to try playing
with some things, such as:

making iwpriv a noop by converting to a bash script and seeing if that
makes the system stable.

Snooping around with iwpriv a bit more, maybe try some gdb break points,
see if I can narrow this down further and come up with a patch (to
either iwpriv or the driver)

Pedro,

Thanks for your feedback.

I had previously ran the 64-bit version of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx but due to
so many issues I switched to the 32-bit version (after 3 months of
trying). I continue to work on enhancing my 100% LINUX computer with
apps but only keep apps where I have resolved the quirks for stable
operation and proper functionality. I update my software regularily
with Update Manager. Bottom line, I am now able to play all my movies
with Totem Movie Player for the 32-bit but never with the 64-bit.

In the future (LTS 2012), I will retry using the 64-bit version to take
advantage of the Intel i7-860 CPU, but for now I will stick with the
32-bit. The 64-bit was too much of a headache to continue with.

Again, thanks - I continue to learn about LINUX and like it more all the
time. My next step in using gPodder with my iPod and using Skype.
Every program I use seems to have quirks that require ironing out.

Keep up the good work.

Once I gain enough experience I will start helping out the LINUX
community.

Wait a minute, I remember...

u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2

That is the command I issued after inspecting my command history,
libGL.so.1.2 must have been the package I removed from being diverted
to fglrx.

I must tell you, I did an in place upgrade from 9.04, ran all the
updates, then to 9.10, all the updates, then upgraded to 10.04, all in a
couple of days, fyi.

Someone told me to remove fglrx, so I tried couple things which didn't work,
u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --purge fglrx --force-depends fglrx
and
u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge *fglrx*
and
u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --ignore-depends=fglrx --purge fglrx

those didn't work
I then did
u...@ubuntu:~$ dpkg -l '*fglrx*'

which currently shows:

[Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic

2010-07-03 Thread ZachG
(For all the people who found this thread by googling)
### REALLY HACKY SOLUTION WHICH WILL (hopefully) ENABLE YOU TO USE r8192
WITHOUT CRASHING IN LINUX ###

The usual disclaimer about these kinds of hacks applies -- I am not
responsible yada yada, do this at your own risk yada yada, worked for
me, not guaranteed to work for you yada yada.

Open a terminal (On Ubuntu 10.04 aka Lucid Lynx: Applications Menu - system
tools - terminal)
1) sudo mv /sbin/iwpriv /sbin/iwpriv.old
2) sudo echo '#!/bin/bash' /sbin/iwpriv
3) sudo chmod +x /sbin/iwpriv

NOTES:
1) I did this on my machine, and was still able to connect to and use wifi
normally.
2) Obviously this will likely break any application which depends on the iwpriv
command, and also makes iwpriv unsable for you on the command line (unless you
use iwpriv.old)
3) Powertop now runs fine without crashing with wifi enabled and running
4) Other applications may still do the same thing as iwpriv which can cause the
crash. This fix does *NOT* address the root cause of the problem. I'm still
going to look for a real fix for the underlying problem with the driver.

Solved! (At least for my system.) I had a build of sqlite3 in /usr/local

apparently getting in the way. This showed up as a failure in the SVN

[Bug 306982] Re: Expose better UI for file-based restore

2010-07-03 Thread david6
This needs to be done in stages:

(1.) Add dialog button, for Restore Files/Folder. CRITICAL

This should already be present. I petulantly disabled Déjà Dup, and
installed Simple Backup, before I found this Bug.

(As per Comment #1) This is not yet a feature. You can however
restore files (or folders) using the command line ('deja-dup --restore
[FILES...]'), or by right-clicking in Nautilus (? requires extension).
This feature will be added in a future release. SEE Bug #306982 .

(2.) Add simple dialog field for files/folders, and feed to command line.
IMPORTANT

(3.) Add complex dialog box(es), for files/folders, version to replace
with, and exception handling. NICE TO HAVE

(4.) A Wizard tool, for all of the above. NICE TO HAVE, ONE DAY

[Bug 579117] Re: Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts

2010-07-03 Thread David Henningsson
I'm still watching, but I lack both time and ideas. Kubuntu 10.04 does not run
pulseaudio so that could be the reason for differences in behavior. (Kubuntu
10.10 will run Pulseaudio, btw.)
That there are no noise floor calibration timeouts under kubuntu seems
interesting though. I'm not sure what it is that Kubuntu does not do in that
case.
This is a case when there is hard to know the real root cause and what messages
are just other victims of the latency, it could be that the calibration
timeouts are not the real causes.

As for trying different kernels, I think it would be interesting to try
linux-preempt (available in Lucid, use Synaptic to get it) and see if it
makes a difference.

[Bug 601261] Re: broadcom sta wireless driver broken by upgrade

2010-07-03 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in linux.

Please run apport-collect 601261 (without the quotes) from a terminal
window. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 389766] Re: Gtk-Message **: Failed to load module pk-gtk-module: libpk-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory at

2010-07-03 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
This is a very bad advice. You could just disable the loading of the
gnome-settings-daemon plugin by setting /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/gtk-
modules/pk-gtk-module to False in the gconf-editor.

The original message is only a warning message and not an error.

Furthermore the gtk-module only enables installing fonts on requests,
but this is not supported by Debian/Ubuntu.
