[Bug 600808] Re: git-gui fonts are aliased
Yes, bitmap fonts look terrible (especially when scaled), which is why the world has moved on to antialiased fonts. You can try changing the default font in Edit → Options after opening a repository, or you can enable antialiasing by switching to Tk 8.5 with the commands I gave you in comment 2. I’m afraid there is nothing else that can be done about this until Tk 8.5 becomes the default version of Tk, so I’m closing this report. Don’t hesitate to report any other bugs you find. ** Changed in: git-core (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- git-gui fonts are aliased https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/600808 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have added your report to the upstream report, but please feel free to add any additional comments to the upstream report at launchpad. Mark -- Forwarded Message -- Subject: [Pkg-hpijs-devel] Bug#587578: hplip: adaptive greyscale (don't use color to print black, it's expensive) Date: Wednesday 30 June 2010, 08:11:36 From: Mark Hedges hed...@scriptdolphin.com To: Debian Bug Tracking System sub...@bugs.debian.org Package: hplip Version: 3.10.5-1 Severity: wishlist It seems like when I print a page of black text using the default 'Normal Color' printer setting, it uses the color cartridge to print black. I notice this when the color catridge runs out of ink or when the paper jams and it prints only one or two colors instead of all of them. The color cartridge is for printing color. The black ink cartridge is for printing black, and is less expensive. As a result, I have to selectively print pages that might have color pictures on them, and switch to 'Normal Greyscale' to print pages that do not. There ought to be a way for the driver to detect whether it is printing b/w or color, and use the appropriate cartridge for the appropriate pixels. Thanks. [Bug 579804] Re: Store/read tags inside photos
I share Aaron's use-case of storing the photos on my server at home. The photos are presently tagged in Shotwell on my laptop. If my wife wants to browse them in their organised state on her laptop, then I either need to find a way of sharing Shotwell's db file or to host in on the server. Alternatively, having the info stored in each photo might do the trick but less efficiently. I'd like the option to occasionally 'update all changed meta-data' in order to ensure that my sorting isn't lost in the future upon reinstalling etc... [Bug 525457] Re: translation line 428: hardware should be the hardware
While this may be true in some languages, in English the definite article (the) is needed in this case. Without use of a definite article, no specific hardware is referred to. In this case, it's any hardware anywhere that is being checked. (That is, hardware without a definite article is using the implicit zero article[1], which usually refers to an indefinite quantity or non-count nouns. Using no article implies that hardware is plural but does not specify which hardware or how many pieces of hardware are being referred to.) With the use of a definite article[2], it becomes apparent that this specific instance of hardware is being referred to. After all that :) , might I suggest a compromise like Check that your system is able to run compiz.? Hardware here is a bit geeky and not as user-friendly, in my opinion. (Sorry folks, reopening as I think this is a valid bug.) _ [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_%28grammar%29#Zero_article (and see also [3]) [2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_%28grammar%29#Definite_article [3] http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/determiners/determiners.htm ** Changed in: checkbox (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- translation line 428: hardware should be the hardware https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/525457 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 579117] Re: Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts
Today's experiment - try it with Kubuntu. I still get noise floor calibration timeout messages. However, I have listened to 10 songs or so now and no skipping. Also no alsa messages in the log. Watching latencytop run, I still see the big latencies for Scheduler: waiting for cpu from time to time (317ms just now; three refreshes later with nothing greater than 50ms, there was just a 266ms). But no skipping/stuttering, and still no error messages in dmesg. David, if you're still watching... above you mention trying a different kernel. Is this just a matter of using Synaptic to get a different kernel from the repos (like the rt kernel)? Or is there more to it than that? [Bug 601299] Re: maverick btrfs slow install
I can confirm the same issue; installation via the alpha 2 32bit alternate media takes ~2 hours when installing to a btrfs partition, compared to ~15 minutes to ext4. I'm not sure that system specs are necessary, because I don't think this is a bug (or if it is, it should be addressed upstream). There's an old thread on the linux-btrfs list[1] which mentions a similar problem, so perhaps btrfs' performance characteristics are unfavourable towards file activity related to package unpacking/installation. Hi Ray, How interesting, just yesterday I also sent an idea for a patch via email to Agostino Russo. I didn't even notice the patch system here. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I looked at your patch, but just to let you know -- for me, at least -- get_filesystem() also causes the error for me GetVolumeInformationA method is the culprit in that one). [Bug 598542] Re: Open VM Tools FTBS on Maverick 2.6.35
I have taken the liberty to rebuild open-vm-tools package available in Maverick, this time I included the patches available in this report. Launchpad's Build was successful and the building of the modules using module assistant was also successful. I've added (or copied, from one of my other PPAs, to be more accurate) packages to my regular PPA. https://launchpad.net/~n-muench/+archive/ppa Also Debian released their build of the newest upstream open-vm-tools (available via GIT). I did 2 builds with their release, one without the patches and one with the patches. The first one failed. However I did a raw compile (without pbuilder) and I've noticed that the vsock patch doesn't work with the new release. The second build (with the vmxnet patch and using pbuilder), successfully built on my Maverick VM. The install also went successfully with one issue. [Bug 541937] Re: Copying files to USB flash drive is extremely slow
I apologize for not having time to really test this, but hopefully this info will help someone who has time... I encountered a similar problem to Adam Porter's comment #5, using grsync. I tried again, leaving the computer alone overnight, and when I woke up the next morning, it was frozen. I'm trying it again using cp from the command line, and gkrellm is showing me something rather interesting. I'm copying from the internal drive (just a normal drive, not solid state) to an external usb hard drive. It appears that the output to the external drive is being buffered, and when the buffer is being flushed, it is consistently hitting a max of 30MB/sec. However, the transfer rate from the internal drive has been creeping down; if I remember correctly it started out at around 10MB/sec and at this point it's down to 2.2MB/sec and still creeping down. I think I'm going to kill the copy and reboot - it has only copied 14GB of a 30GB file, and I strongly suspect that it will freeze before it finishes at the rate things are going. I guess I'll have to boot off my karmic flash drive to copy this file... I'm running lucid on an Asus Eee PC 1005ha. I have seen the slow copy problem before in nautilus, but it's never frozen like this. I think a recent patch may have broken it. -- Copying files to USB flash drive is extremely slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541937 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

1) I can confirm everything Matt has said so far on my machine. iwpriv -a is definitely the cause of the problem 2) Obviously I cant copy paste so good from a non-X vt on a machine that has had a kernel panic. I took a photo however (attached) 3) It looks like it crashes on an ioctl (surprise, surprise). Sadly the exact ioctl isnt there? It shows me ioctl(0x8bec) which looks like memory somehow got corrupted and its passing a bad ioctl? There is another suspicious ioctl before the crash without a macro mapping, 0x8be5. I'm going to try playing with some things, such as: making iwpriv a noop by converting to a bash script and seeing if that makes the system stable. Pedro, Thanks for your feedback. I had previously ran the 64-bit version of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx but due to so many issues I switched to the 32-bit version (after 3 months of trying). I continue to work on enhancing my 100% LINUX computer with apps but only keep apps where I have resolved the quirks for stable operation and proper functionality. I update my software regularily with Update Manager. Bottom line, I am now able to play all my movies with Totem Movie Player for the 32-bit but never with the 64-bit. In the future (LTS 2012), I will retry using the 64-bit version to take advantage of the Intel i7-860 CPU, but for now I will stick with the 32-bit. The 64-bit was too much of a headache to continue with. Again, thanks - I continue to learn about LINUX and like it more all the time. My next step in using gPodder with my iPod and using Skype. Every program I use seems to have quirks that require ironing out. Keep up the good work. Once I gain enough experience I will start helping out the LINUX community. [Bug 585938] Re: [STAGING] r8192se_pci + powertop = kernel panic
(For all the people who found this thread by googling) ### REALLY HACKY SOLUTION WHICH WILL (hopefully) ENABLE YOU TO USE r8192 WITHOUT CRASHING IN LINUX ### The usual disclaimer about these kinds of hacks applies -- I am not responsible yada yada, do this at your own risk yada yada, worked for me, not guaranteed to work for you yada yada. Open a terminal (On Ubuntu 10.04 aka Lucid Lynx: Applications Menu - system tools - terminal) 1) sudo mv /sbin/iwpriv /sbin/iwpriv.old 2) sudo echo '#!/bin/bash' /sbin/iwpriv 3) sudo chmod +x /sbin/iwpriv NOTES: 1) I did this on my machine, and was still able to connect to and use wifi normally. 2) Obviously this will likely break any application which depends on the iwpriv command, and also makes iwpriv unsable for you on the command line (unless you use iwpriv.old) 3) Powertop now runs fine without crashing with wifi enabled and running 4) Other applications may still do the same thing as iwpriv which can cause the crash. This fix does *NOT* address the root cause of the problem. [Bug 579117] Re: Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts
I'm still watching, but I lack both time and ideas. Kubuntu 10.04 does not run pulseaudio so that could be the reason for differences in behavior. (Kubuntu 10.10 will run Pulseaudio, btw.) That there are no noise floor calibration timeouts under kubuntu seems interesting though. I'm not sure what it is that Kubuntu does not do in that case. This is a case when there is hard to know the real root cause and what messages are just other victims of the latency, it could be that the calibration timeouts are not the real causes. As for trying different kernels, I think it would be interesting to try linux-preempt (available in Lucid, use Synaptic to get it) and see if it makes a difference. -- Wireless blocks USB-Audio, leading to dropouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579117 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
