The problem is also occouring, if the bridged devices are not touched in any
case.
Nothing was happening on the host side - all though the problem occours
somewhat sometimes randomally.

That is a ver, very, very nasty DOS bug - makes lucid complete unusable
as virtual hosting plattform.

This issue has been fixed upstream in the repository and will be

[Bug 84899] Re: SSH with GSSAPIAuthentication option on SSH servers are very slow

2010-07-19 Thread chifamba
This is still the case with Lucid.
I change to no in my local config and now ssh is faster.
I think it is important for user experience to set this to no by default and
anyone needing it can then enable it manually. This is because this bug has now
created the impression that ssh when using ubuntu/linux is slow or has a long
delay. This is not good from a general experience point of view.

I don't think we should accept slow default settings...or at least ask
the question during installation/configuration time.

[Bug 607242] [NEW] image-store needs to select kernel to boot based on host release

2010-07-19 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

For maverick UEC images, there will be 2 kernels shipped
a.) linux kernel (as copied from inside image /boot)
b.) grub boot loader. This is so that a guest can service its own kernel ([1])

Due to a bug in kvm on 10.04 (bug 598649) we will not be able to boot
grub images when the host is Lucid. However, on Maverick hosts, we will
want to boot the grub kernel.

What this means is that in one way or another, we will need for the
image store proxy to register the grub kernel when the host is maverick,
and the linux kernel when the host is lucid (or earlier).

One possible work around with this is to populate the image store with 2 images
and leave it up to the user to select the right one:
 - Ubuntu Maverick Image (for Maverick Hosts)
 - Ubuntu Maverick Image (for Lucid or older hosts)

[Bug 604730] Re: can't stop qemu-kvm, if cgroup is running

2010-07-19 Thread Serge Hallyn
I picked medium instead of high because (1) it is easily avoidable, and
(2) the system continues to run. So I didn't feel this fell into the category
of 'critical to a small number of users'. If you feel otherwise, I can be
convinced so please go ahead and change it.

On another note, I was unable to reproduce this myself (in maverick),
so still waiting for the reporter to provide the requested additional
information.

[Bug 394570] Re: Backspace via SSH only deletes last byte of characters (no IUTF8 handling, requires standardisation work)

2010-07-19 Thread Egmont Koblinger
I don't understand: why does it require an extension to SSH protocol?

Sure, one possible way would be to make ssh forward this bit of
information. However, the IUTF8 flag should be set consistently with the
locale (the character set part), which is not forwarded by ssh either -
but still set on the server.

Another approach could be to do whatever happens to the locale: when you
log on remotely, someone sets this environment variable for you. Whoever
does this (pam, login script, whatever) could also modify the terminal
settings, couldn't it? Taking this approach, you don't need to modify
the protocol, just make sure that whenever someone logs in via ssh, they
don't only get $LANG and stuff but also the stty iutf8 bit set
correctly.

Moreover, I believe the meaning of
/sys/module/vt/parameters/default_utf8 is that every newly allocated
terminal gets the iutf8 flag set automatically to this value by the
kernel. Should the ssh server or login procedure be unable to get the
locale information, they ought to respect whatever is set here. This yet
again doesn't require extending the protocol.

2010-07-19 Thread AliQ.
i don't know what was the source of this issue, i reinstalled everything and it
runs just fine, some points to mention here:
 - i enabled AMD-v VT-x virtualization on my machines since i was deploying
it with Sun virtualBox
 - i used same username and password on client as well as CLC,CC, and NC.
 - i didn't install guestAdditions (but i installed it after

[Bug 573919] Re: autofs doesn't work with lucid

2010-07-19 Thread Carl Nobile
This is the same bug as 590570, but this one has been around longer.

I think the real issue underlying this bug is in bug 525154 which
relates to a race condition while starting portmap which in turn starts
statd. This only seems to be an issue if you have /var as a separate
mount point where /var is not mounted when statd is started.

Post 13 on bug 525154 seems to solve this issue, but it is only a
workaround, it does not solve the race condition if my understanding is
correct.

[Bug 607466] Re: libvirt error starting domin: could not remove profile for

2010-07-19 Thread Bryan McLellan
1) stopped libvirt via the libvirt-bin init script
2) started 'libvirtd -v' manually hoping to see some debugging output
3) started the guest okay.
4) destroyed the guest
5) canceled the manual libvirt
6) started libvirt-bin again with the init script
7) started the guest okay.

Note that AppArmor was off for this process, so the workaround was
either:

a) restarting libvirt
b) restarting libvirt with apparmor off (would this matter?)
c) started libvirt by hand (clearing something?)
d) magic

To keep things simple, you can even use the Ubuntu Software Centre to search

[Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-07-19 Thread Tim Hallett
Passable stability with drover git716, random screensavers cycle for
several hours, with eventual freezes on open GL (implying that perhaps
upgrade to Mesa 7.8.2 might be in order). Upon freeze, X does not crash,
and desktop can be recovered, however, attempting to open the
screensaver control panel will crash the system. On other occasion, X
will be brought down (green light on monitor, X cannot be recovered), or
system will be brought down (monitor indicates no signal). In either
event system is working well under applications such as google Earth.
Lucid solution is close, hopefull this will be fully resolved in
Maverick. (I can assure that i815 system works flawlessly with perfect
stability on current git716 driver)

[Bug 556686] Re: [10.04 Netbook] close button is on left while maximized

2010-07-19 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Since it's not a bug in light-themes (ubuntu), it should be marked as
invalid.

@Vish, as per comments on Bug #532633,
It's just a discussion about placing buttons to left/right in Metacity title,
and final decision was to place them to LEFT.

Also, I think it won't be fixed in Window-Picker-Applet because Ubuntu-
Netbook 10.10 will come without it (ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-
settings does not depend on it).

To insure that the latest driver code still works for you, could you
please install the package linux-alsa-driver-modules-generic from the

Please remove any backports alsa packages before you install the package

[Bug 607084] [NEW] Fetching POP3 Mail in KMail sometimes fails

2010-07-19 Thread sven-ola
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepimlibs5

With KMail - while fetching mail with POP3 - it sometimes fails,
sometimes I got mail twice, sometimes mails are missing.

Root cause: the /usr/lib/kde4/kio_pop3.so implements an overlapping
buffer shift with memcpy() which has unpredictable results. Needs two
memmove() to fix this, see attached patch. Bug is valid since ages
AFAICT by looking into the source repo. Anybody _using_ Kmail these
days?

I tried to spread a fix upstream on the kdepim mailing list and added
comment to a couple of kde bugs but no reaction. Either relevant people
are all on holiday or I send to wrong channels. I'd like to have this
fixed, e.g if the next secuirty update overwrites my own version of the
kio_pop3.so file.

Jean-Baptiste Lallement [2010-07-17 21:57 -]:
Charlie, no they aren't there any more since they are removed in the
old postrm and that's what this sru is intended to fix. You should
probably specifically handle the upgrade from version 2.3-1ubuntu2
and recreate the directories, without forgetting to save the config
files in /etc/gallery2 prior to the execution of the old-postrm.

This can be done in the preinst script. It should copy/move away the
files/dirs, and then the postinst script can move them back on
upgrade.

[Bug 373158] Re: tracker IO activity slows down ubuntu 9.04

2010-07-19 Thread Marius Groeger
This issue is definitely still present in 10.04 (64bit), I'm seeing it
with a fresh install. What I was running 9.04 I played with the tracker
performance slider (which appears to control the process's nice value?)
but did not notice any perceived change. The freezes appeared to occur
relatively late during the indexing, so there may be issues with large
indexes. I have a lot of source code and pdf documents on the index. To
me the whole problem appears as if tracker was holding a lock on a file
which is also used by many others. So, in fact, the less CPU time
tracker gets, the more others have to wait for it (aka priority
inversion). I think the issue is a crying shame, as it has been in
(oops, there it happened again, a 5 second freeze with Firefox getting
greyed out) ubuntu since at least 3 releases, and now even is in an LTS.

The tracker.log contains one 1 line dating from 2008(!)...

Here's the new debian.tar.gz.

I assume 0.138-0ubuntu1 is already in maverick (even if it's not listed on
http://packages.ubuntu.com),
so I've bumped revision to 0ubuntu2. If this is does not apply, please edit
changelog before uploading.

Changes included:
1. Fixed dependencies in debian/control to manage package renaming correctly
2. Got rid of mame.dirs and mame-tools.dirs, also removed any reference but
/etc/ctrlr
in mame-common.dirs (all redundant according to Ubuntu packaging guide).

Thanks!

[Bug 606910] Re: mozilla-packagekit cannot be installed with firefox 3.5

2010-07-19 Thread Anton Piatek
Looking through the changelog, this plugin is not compatible with
firefox 3.0 because of the level of xulrunner.

Am I correct in thinking that it should be Conflicts: firefox-3.0 as
it has the wrong level of xulrunner, as opposed to Breaks which
implies that firefox-3.0 must be deconfigured first

From the Ubuntu Policy document:
When one binary package declares that it breaks another, dpkg will refuse to
allow the package which declares Breaks be installed unless the broken package
is deconfigured first, and it will refuse to allow the broken package to be
reconfigured.

Should this simply conflict with firefox-3.0 and only recommend other
browsers?

What do you mean by promoting all these 4 packages to universe?

I meant mplayer, x264, lame and xvidcore. I think all of them actually
belong in universe, not multiverse.

after rechecking, x264 is already in universe, and I see no reason why
lame, xvidcore and mplayer should not also be there.

WDYT?

[Bug 571038] Re: palimpsest

2010-07-19 Thread Mike Bell
Update: Fixed my partitions and I'm no longer getting an error running
palimpsest. I imagine that gparted and other disk-oriented programs have
various ways of figuring out the partition structure even w/ slightly
messed-up partition tables, whereas palimpsest's method of enumerating
the partitions just couldn't handle a non-standard (though non-
corrupted) situation. GL.

[Bug 404331] Re: X locks up when scrolling on Radeon Mobility M6 LY

2010-07-19 Thread Cedders
Unfortunately, I think this was never resolved. On upgrading karmic to
lucid, the problem re-emerged, even though I was using the Option DRI
false workaround.

I've been suffering lockups/crashes at about the same frequency, every
2-3 hours say, for several months (except when I use Windows, which is
very tempting - there's a additional and probably separate problem that
lucid never resumes successfully from hibernate or suspend.)

Again, the lockups are most common when scrolling in Firefox or
switching between windows (as if it's a DMA/timing thing?). Again,
there's often a corruption of the scroll bar visible either side of the
slider, and the bottom 10% of the window hasn't scrolled. However, what
happens next differs from the problem as in hardy-jaunty with DRI true.
At approximately equal frequency it may be one of:

a) The cursor is still moving but the screen not updating (eg I have
system monitor in the top panel and it stops). CPU usage is not
particularly high. The only thing I can do in Gnome is click on the
buttons on the taskbar to minimise applications, and Gnome will redraw
the desktop background correctly. I can use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a
text console and reboot cleanly. I've tried taking a screenshot of this
state, but it has been saved as a distorted PNG.

b) There is a complete freeze: the corruption in the Firefox window may
be visible, but the cursor won't move. Even Alt+SysRq+E keys won't work
and I have to manually power-cycle.

c) As b, but the screen blanks after a fraction of a second, and remains
blank. I know in this situation Alt+SysRq won't do anything.

With a different Xorg configuration (I may have changed AccelMethod,
plus there have been some xorg driver upgrades) I've also seen X/gdm
crash and restart after a):

(II) Sleep Button: Close
(II) UnloadModule: evdev
(II) Power Button: Close
(II) UnloadModule: evdev
 ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log

I got a backtrace from a) but never uploaded it, as it wasn't very
revealing:
