[Bug 613463] Re: [10.10 - Alpha 3 (candidate)] Prompts misleading grub dialogs during UEC Node installation.

2010-08-05 Thread Scott Moser
This bug is present now because eucalyptus-nc added a dependency on
grub-pc. I believe that this caused grub-pc to get installed earlier in
the installation process, before some other things were properly set up.

The reason for the dependency on grub-pc is that eucalyptus-nc is
creating a boot floppy (no, I'm not kidding) using grub-mkrescue. That
is done in mk-mb-loader [1]. grub-rescue depends on a functional grub-
mkimage, and to create bootable content for a pc system, that depends
on files inside grub-pc (the content of /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/).

One solution to this would be to provide the contents of
/usr/lib/grub/i386-pc in a separate package , and maybe in general all
of the /usr/lib/grub/format directories. Ie, if there was a package
called grub-pc-modules, then eucalyptus-nc could depend on that package
and on grub-common (for grub-rescue). That would have the added benefit
of not explicitly requiring a bootloader in eucalyptus-nc (for a case
where grub-pc wasn't the right boot loader for the host system).

It seems to me that the content of /usr/lib/grub/dir is useful of
simply being a host's bootloader. It may well make sense to have all of
/usr/lib/grub/* installed on a system, but grub not used as the host's
bootloader at all.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post such a message, but I'm
experiencing this issue on a production host and it's a significant
issue. I have to reboot my machine regularly, and this bug is causing
boot to take well over 30 minutes.

Is there a workaround I can use until the next stable release?
Can someone point me to the proper place to get support for this issue?

Thanks in advance

[Bug 613619] Re: qem/kvm misinterprets LVM volume geometry

2010-08-05 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Here are some discussions where I found problems mentioned that seem to
be the same or closely related problem:

http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-30329.html
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1425421

I am not sure yet what exactly the reason is, but I experienced similar
problems on several hosts, both with kvm and qemu. You can install a
system on a partitioned lvm volume from the host, but once you boot it,
the virtual machine can't mount it (or generates rubbish like reading
files that have been deleted under FAT16).

Interestingly one of the commenters in the ubuntu discussion above
mentioned that it worked when leaving space at the beginning of the lvm.
I once tried to convert a regular ubuntu machine into an almost
identical virtual copy for backup reasons. I first used fdisk -c with -u
command (which results in different positions for the partitions), and
when I bootet that virtual machine, it could mount only the first two
partitions, but then ran into severe trouble when trying to mount the
third filesystem (beeing unable to display file permissions or contents
and such things). When I repeated everything with a regular old-
fashioned fdisk (without -c and -u) it worked. But that was obviously
some luck, since repeating this with lvm volumes of different size was
not possible.

For some reason the virtual disk looks somehow different from inside
(virtual machine) than from outside (host), and it might be related to
the the beginning of the lvm volume.

[Bug 613940] [NEW] euca-terminate-instances returns success on bogus input

[Bug 613969] [NEW] Uninformative libvirt error message when a virtual disk source is unavailable

2010-08-05 Thread Brian Pitts
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 10.04, I was recently unable to start two virtual machine.
Both produced the same error. The error reported by virt-manager was

Traceback (most recent call last):

libvirtError: monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused

and the error reported by virsh was

error: Failed to start domain WindowsVista-IE7
error: monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused

It turned out that the reason the virtual machines would not start is
that the sources for their virtual cdrom drives were unavailable. One VM
had an iso file as the source, but I had deleted the iso file. The other
had my physical cdrom drive as the source, but I did not have a disk in
it. After disconnecting these unavailable sources the VMs started
successfully.

It would have been nice if virt-manager and virsh had reported that some
configured disks were unavailable instead of reporting a generic message
that the connection to the VM did not show up.

[Bug 613549] Re: does not support cloning vm storage on lvm backend

2010-08-05 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Made the requested apparmor change, checked the dmesg output before
attempting to clone the VM, found the following new entry:

[90351.748748] type=1505 audit(1281033561.731:23):
operation=profile_replace pid=7783 name=/usr/sbin/libvirtd

Looks good so far.

First attempt to clone the VM and set the new drive to the desired LVM
device name resulted in an warning dialog:

Cloning will overwrite the existing file

Using an existing image will overwrite the path during the clone
process. Are you sure you want to use this path?

Answered yes and continued on. Cloning errors with the following:

# ls -l /dev/mapper/vms-ldap
brw-rw 1 root disk 251, 16 2010-08-05 12:46 /dev/mapper/vms-ldap

As you can see the device does in fact exist and this is backed up by
the output of lvs:

# lvs | grep ldap

Now, removing the logical volume and starting fresh results in the

[Bug 613309] Re: upstart scripts do not wait for 'cloud-config' status

2010-08-05 Thread Scott Moser
Pete,
What problem were you seeing exactly?
The upstart jobs cloud-* do not explicitly list 'cloud-config' as a 'start
on' requirement. That is by design. cloud-init starts on:
 (mounted MOUNTPOINT=/ and net-device-up IFACE=eth0)
That set of events actually blocks any other upstart jobs from running until
it is finished. Because of this, all the other cloud-config-* jobs are
guaranteed to run after cloud-init finishes. Your suggestion to modify that to
'filesystem' from 'mounted MOUNTPOINT=/' will break that.

Have you actually seen this to not be true ?

I do agree that the parallelization of the cloud-cfg jobs is
annoying. This has been changed in maverick. Now the jobs run
serially, and the order can actually be controlled by cloud-config
input.

For the case that you were interested in, with the debconf, the
setting of debconf values will run prior to the running of 'apt-get' so
that should be fine.

The one thing I would consider most annoying is that user scripts
(upstart/cloud-run-user-script.conf) are not guaranteed to run after any of the
cloud-config jobs are run. So, you can't rely on the following cloud-config:
| #cloud-config
| packages:
| - axel
| runcmd:
| - [ axel, http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.35.tar.bz2 ]

I find that to be annoying, and would agree to fix that.

[Bug 613999] [NEW] openvpn is started after samba (smbd, nmbd)

2010-08-05 Thread dzs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openvpn

After boot the smbd and nmbd services are not bound to the tap interface
created by openvpn. I think this is because openvpn is started after samba,
because after a
# service nmbd restart
# service smbd restart
everything works fine.

I saw the samba services were already converted to upstart jobs but
openvpn was not yet. Probably the rc scripts are executed after or
parallel to the other upstart jobs.

[Bug 578922] Re: mysql configuration should be adjusted to help prevent against chained attacks against LAMP stack

2010-08-05 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package apparmor - 2.5.1~pre1393-0ubuntu1

---
apparmor (2.5.1~pre1393-0ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * Update to upstream bzr revision 1393 from lp:apparmor/2.5.
* add dbus-session abstraction (LP: #566207)
* require owner in user-tmp abstraction (LP: #578922)
* don't use uninitialized $opt_s (LP: #582075)
* allow thunderbird 3 in abstractions/ubuntu-email (LP: #590462)
* allow gmplayer in abstractions/ubuntu-media-players (LP: #591421)
  * debian/control: updated branches.
  * debian/patches/0001-local-includes.patch: backported patch from trunk to
allow local administrators to customize their profiles without modifying
a shipped profile
  * debian/rules:
- don't pass RELEASE to libapparmor's 'make install' as it breaks the
build and isn't used by the Makfile anyway
- install apparmor.d/local/README in apparmor, not apparmor-profiles
- don't install apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.ntpd
  * Drop the following patches already included upstream:
- 0001-lp538561.patch
- 0002-aalogprof-warnings.patch
- 0003-fix-memleaks.patch
- 0004-lp549557.patch
- 0005-lp538661.patch

[Bug 613309] Re: upstart scripts do not wait for 'cloud-config' status

2010-08-05 Thread Pete Crossley
Sorry about that Scott yes I had an old source for the cloud-init
upstart script your correct about the mount point.

The issue I was seeing is that the system was trying to query user data
prior to the system loading it from the meta data service. So by
waiting for cloud-init to load the metadata/userdata everything else
worked. I will try and pull the maverick sources and see what I get
just from the repo with out any patching. (but i will run them on a
lucid uec image).. once i figure out my ssh issue in my cloud :)

More info to come! Thanks for the info.

Hello Gary,

thanks a lot for those updates! Maverick, Lucid, Karmic, Jaunty looked
good, uploaded. For hardy I had to manually unpack, since it used a
different tzdata_2010k~repack.orig.tar.gz than the jaunty one; also, I
removed the extra .1 from the version number. So please remove your
local copy and re-get hardy from the archive for the next round.

 Bug description:
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X200 which equipped with Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN
adapter. When running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while, say 15 minutes or longer,
the adapter cannot transmit data or even cannot reconnect to the router when
it was disconnected. My dd-wrt router shows that there are some errors when
 the data is transmitting.

The worst thing is that the wireless card would be disabled and could not be
used again until I boot the notebook computer with Windows system to activate
 the wireless adapter.

I searched from the Google and found that someone out there has the similar
problem. The link is as the following :

2010-08-05 Thread Steven Thomas
Hi Bryce, are you sure this is related to the Nvidia graphics driver?
IIRC it was also happening on my Intel graphics based laptop, but my
laptop's busted right now and I can't confirm that unfortunately.

[Bug 559350] Re: zeitgeist-daemon crashed with OverflowError in call_async()

2010-08-05 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
For the record: In order to close this bug in Zeitgeist (not libzg) I
think we need to do as Michal suggests; wrap the monitor invocations in
try-catch blocks.

Closing it in libzg is a matter of merging Michal's branch

[Bug 613735] [NEW] Please merge autoconf 2.67-2(main) from debian unstable(main)

2010-08-05 Thread Bhavani Shankar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autoconf

Debian changes:

 autoconf (2.67-2) unstable; urgency=low

   * lib/m4sugar/m4sh.m4: Add a trailing space to the definition of
AS_ERROR, following AS_MESSAGE_LOG_FD, to work around Bug #591547 in
 pkg-config that breaks PKG_CHECK_MODULES.

This is presumably temporary, until a fixed pkg-config can be
released, at which time this workaround can be reverted and a conflict
 added against unfixed pkg-config versions.

 Closes: #591548.

autoconf (2.65-4) unstable; urgency=low

   * debian/copyright: Fix copyright notice, which should have been updated
to GPLv3 when Autoconf's copyright changed, but I forgot. Thanks to

 #571729.

[Bug 550261] Re: Backups cannot be started through the GUI

2010-08-05 Thread Stefano Rivera
Any help/hints to get this release (0.11) into Maverick before the
feature freeze next week.

Perform a merge as soon it's been uploaded into Debian. If this is after the
freeze, be sure to include a feature freeze exception explanation (i.e. that it
closes important bugs) and it'll be accepted.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/Merging

 Please fast-track it into Ubuntu.

Righto uploaded to lucid-proposed. Up to the SRU team now.

[Bug 611024] Re: Rebuild for libmpcdec3 → libmpcdec6 transition

2010-08-05 Thread Harry
The vlc update (vlc 1.1.1-1+exp1ubuntu2) solves the libmpcdec6 issue in
maverick (fix released).
However, the new release of vlc (1.1.2) could have been used already.

[Bug 613743] [NEW] update-manager cpu-bound for a long time opening

2010-08-05 Thread Daniel J Blueman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-apt

When opening update-manager on a linux system with poor X acceleration,
eg with the Nouveau driver or the Radeon driver on newer hardware or
power saving enabled, Xorg consumes 100% processor time, and update-
manager can take (literally) 1-2 minutes to open.

[Bug 417199] Re: gnome-terminal command line options potentially irrelevant

2010-08-05 Thread Emilien Klein
Forgot to add a link yesterday to my answer:
http://superuser.com/questions/72130/save-multiple-gnome-terminal-
layout/81465#81465

Rob, I don't really see a problem with the help text:
--load-config=FILE Load a terminal configuration file
--save-config=FILE Save the terminal configuration to a file

It explains that save-config saves the terminal configuration to a
file (what it does) and that load-config loads the configuration from
a file. Maybe the part that you are missing is that the save-config
should be executed once you have the setup the terminals like you want
to save them, and not when running the terminal for the first time, as
it seems that was the part that confused you?

Anyway, I found this bug report looking for another bug, personally I
don't think this is a bug. Good luck!

[Bug 574910] Re: High load averages on Lucid while idling

2010-08-05 Thread Alex Howells
I've spoken with John on IRC and the team are perfectly aware there is a
problem. This is not in dispute.

It takes time to track down these problems, and the time of a kernel
developer is in high demand. I seriously doubt this is the only
'serious' bug affecting a decent number of users which is being tracked
for resolution as soon as possible.

What doesn't help matters is white noise from users who superficially
read 2% of the posts, scream Oh my god that must be me and then chime
in with no helpful detail other than, My system is slow, ya'll suck, I
am off back to a better distro. Doubtless there are folks with a
business depending on Ubuntu but unless you add to the equation, you're
not helping either. Should you have a support contract with Canonical
feel free to complain via that route, perhaps it will help.

Some helpful diagnosis has already contributed to tracking this down:

* Downgrading portions of a Lucid Lynx system so it runs a Karmic Koala
kernel seems to fix it
* Upgrading a Karmic Koala box to a Lucid Lynx kernel, retaining the older
userland, causes problems.

That fairly squarely points the finger at some kind of kernel
regression. If anyone has the skills to assist pulling apart the kernel
and diagnosing the issue then I'm sure that'd be appreciated; once we
have some patches then anyone with the skills to trial a potentially
fixed new kernel will be extremely useful.

[Bug 613743] Re: update-manager cpu-bound for a long time opening

2010-08-05 Thread Daniel J Blueman
I tracked this down to a very high frequency of GUI updates, when the

With the attached patch, we still get many progress-bar updates and
update-manager opens in now 5 seconds, rather than ~60s (or more with
further power saving).

[Bug 494476] Re: Smbd, kjournald2 and rsync blocked for more than 120 seconds while using ext4.

2010-08-05 Thread Lars
Hi everybody.

The test with cfq was successful too.
In our setup and with our purpose the noop was a bit faster. (8:19 hours
instead of 8:49 hours)

So with a server kernel don't use deadline if you get blocking
processes. This seems the solution.

Good luck.

[Bug 613706] Re: Incorrect /etc/ltsp/dhcp.conf file

2010-08-05 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in ltsp.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I have set the status to confirmed as per comment #2. This may be
related to Bug #573207.

2. Popup dialog appears letting me choose what I want to do with the empty CD

[Bug 559350] Re: zeitgeist-daemon crashed with OverflowError in call_async()

2010-08-05 Thread Mikkel Kamstrup Erlandsen
Looking quickly at fixinf this on the ZG side as well... I am actually
afraid that this is impossible to fix inside Zeitgeist :-S

We dispatch the monitor DBus calls asynchrously, and the bug is somehow
picked up very low in the stack in an async callback before it reaches
Zeitgeist. Indeed I can see no Zeitgeist code in the stack trace. Also,
we are actually passing in an error handler to DBus which *ought* to be

in a warning printed on stdout.
