[Bug 653362] Re: package mail-stack-delivery 1:1.2.12-1ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
Hello Col., Thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and help us make Ubuntu better. Is it possible that you have changed the permissions on the directory or files that would cause these errors? Maybe /etc is mounted readonly? The permission denied is odd because these scripts run as root. I just tested upgrading Lucid - Maverick with dovecot-postifx installed, and it renamed the file without any errors. Col, if you could please post the result of ls -lR /etc/dovecot That would help us determine whether or not the permissions have been locally modified in a way that breaks the install script, or whether the install scripts need to be changed. Re: [Bug 652433] Re: Init script dependency error: krb5-kdc starts before slapd

[Bug 647664] Re: Unhelpful Security labelling error with read-only floppy image
I can see that it would make sense to allow /usr/lib and /usr/share to be read. The wider question is how to give sane errors; the error didn't say anything about it being the floppy image, so it was luck that this was the only thing I'd changed other wise it would have been difficult to track down. [Bug 651182] Re: Invocations of /etc/init.d/mailman start spawns multiple instances
Hi all, and thanks a lot for your attention. The simple patch in attachment fix the problem, so it means the bug is inside /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl not in init script /etc/init.d/mailman I suppose there's a wrong implementation of flag '-s': -s/--stale-lock-cleanup If mailmanctl finds an existing master lock, it will normally exit with an error message. With this option, mailmanctl will perform an extra level of checking. If a process matching the host/pid described in the lock file is running, mailmanctl will still exit, but if no matching process is found, mailmanctl will remove the apparently stale lock and make another attempt to claim the master lock. Thanks a lot for your work, Andrea ** Patch added: Avoid buggy '-s' implementation https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mailman/+bug/651182/+attachment/1667136/+files/fix.patch -- Invocations of /etc/init.d/mailman start spawns multiple instances https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651182 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mailman in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

After that, I can go to the screen saver preferences and there is no black screen/crash. Screensaver comes in after the specified time and works, probably slowly, though. However, I then realised that modetest should have been modeset. So, not surprisingly, syslog reports: kernel: [ 18.768163] i915: Unknown parameter `modetest' If I use modeset=0, or modeset=1, then the blanking/crash still happens when I go to the screensaver preferences. So, modetest=0 or modetest=1 (either one avoids the blanking) is doing *something*. But what, and why? Anyway, I'm happy to live with this until the official release of Maverick, which hopefully will solve things. -- MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541492 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 653443] [NEW] Corrupt graphics after bootsplash on dell inspiron 600m
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon Hi there. I'm trying my best to file this properly, and I hope the report can help pinpoint the issue I'm having. Part of this is a repost from the SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL Launchpad-Answers Ubuntu section, but I have some more information now and feel better about posting an official bug. Here goes: Hey everyone. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper, and for the most part it's been great times. My desktop computer is totally solid, even while running the Maverick beta. However, I've run into a large issue trying to get the current Maverick build running on my old laptop. The device in question is a Dell Inspiron 600M (got it from someone who didn't want it anymore). I had it running Lucid with no huge issues, but I wanted to take advantage of the nicer theme and upgrades to the package repos. I wouldn't have bothered this early, but as I said, it's been running nicely on my desktop. As such, I seem to have hit a pretty nasty bug/regression, and I'm wondering if anyone can help out. Here's what I've got: I installed the beta using the same cd I had made for my desktop. Installation went through without an issue, and I was able to reboot into my new desktop with no problem. However, after running update manager to do a partial upgrade into the current state of Maverick, I'm unable to get the computer to properly boot on restart. After the ubuntu logo shows up, insead of going properly to the login screen I get a strange graphic... basically a wall containing the purple/white-ish hues of the login background, but thinly vertically striped (it would seem, sort of hard to properly explain, as the stripes are the same color). If I blindly hit enter, and enter my password, the screen goes a strange pattern of grey (similar to the toolbars on the desktop). I couldn't get it to properly do anything from here, except that once or twice I was able to ctrl-alt-del and hit enter to shut down (so keyboard input is working). It kinda sounds like part of whatever is on the screen (a toolbar, for example) is being stretched through the whole screen, but it doesn't look like a resolution issue. I tried reinstalling many, many times (very tedious) in different fashions, to try and nail down what might be the culprit... And I think I have! I've gone through over 400 packages, often updating one at a time and then restarting to try and find which package is giving me trouble, and it seems to be this one: upon installing gnome- settings daemon on a Maverick Beta build and restarting, I'm getting the graphical corruption again. I posted my issue on September 19th, so the issue must have happened in an update to g-s-d between the publishing of the beta iso (September 2nd) and then. If it helps, I've tried installing the RC directly using that iso, and I get the same corruption. So... I dunno. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out, since no one seemed interested in helping with the grunt-work. Is there anything I can do to further nail down this bug? I'd really like to help get it fixed before Maverick final comes out, assuming it isn't something specific to my laptop specifically. I've run out of computers to test, and my desktop is still running up-to-date Maverick perfectly. [Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change
Some afterthoughts. In case it's not been clear, I am not interested in scoring 'brownie points' for 'being smart', only in obtaining a 'CD Quality' profile that consistently works for friends and other users, leaving 'B-cubed' to other folk, but so far I have not seen any meaningful definition of 'lame' versus 'lamemp3enc' terms and profiles, so if we are to be pedantic, I will in future just refer to the 'BruceR' versus 'KennoVO' profiles. Meanwhile, I see that the Ubuntu 10.10 'rc' releases are still exhibiting some inconsistencies in operation between the Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic, in adding ubuntu-restricted-extras and sound-juicer, where initiation by the Software Center then needs completion or reinstallation by Synaptic. However, once installed, Audio CD Extractor's less obvious CD Quality, MP3 default profile is a KennoVO style profile (audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lameemp3enc name=enc target=0 quality=6 ! xingmux ! id3v2mux) which I have simply amended with 'quality=2' before use in a LiveCD session. It's then a lot slower encoding than my 'Mint-9 on a stick' and still has 'a strident and raucous colouration' to my ears, but I really must get some younger, keener, and more musical ears to compare the results against the original CDs. -- Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 653446] [NEW] kmix breaks pulseaudio volume per channel setup when changing volume to 100% or 0%

[Bug 331742] Re: Gnome-schedule doesn't execute scheduled tasks
Back to the original problem, as reported in post #3 and #7. The fact is that in many cases, we can successfully test a task by clicking Run selected task, but then, in real life it won't run. Two main technical reasons: 1) The test is PATH-aware, the real task (using cron) is not 2) The test is insensitive to the output mode (Default or X application), the real task is not I think this is indeed a bug worth to be fixed. At least, the message that appears when testing a task should be improved (Note about working directory of executed tasks, it is confusing.)
