[Bug 653362] Re: package mail-stack-delivery 1:1.2.12-1ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-10-02 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Col., Thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

The error messages in DpkgTerminalLog.txt that show this failure are
here:

Selecting previously deselected package mail-stack-delivery.
Unpacking mail-stack-delivery (from
.../mail-stack-delivery_1%3a1.2.12-1ubuntu7_all.deb) ...

subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

This file attempts to rename these files from dovecot-postfix to mail-
stack-delivery if they exist.

Is it possible that you have changed the permissions on the directory or
files that would cause these errors? Maybe /etc is mounted readonly? The
permission denied is odd because these scripts run as root.

I just tested upgrading Lucid - Maverick with dovecot-postifx
installed, and it renamed the file without any errors.

Col, if you could please post the result of

ls -lR /etc/dovecot

That would help us determine whether or not the permissions have been
locally modified in a way that breaks the install script, or whether the
install scripts need to be changed.

Hello Walter, thank you for taking the time to file this report and help

I believe there is a problem with your downloaded packages. You should
try to clear your cache and then re-attempt the package upgrades or
 installations you were attempting again.

 Run

 apt-get clean

 To clear the cache entirely.

Closing this bug as Invalid, as there is no software bug here, just
 corrupt files on disk.

And just like that, I see that another user has experienced this exact
same sequence of events in DpktTerminalLog.txt.

Marking Confirmed in light of that.

Setting importance to Medium, as it seems to be affecting users who are
upgrading from Lucid to Maverick, but does not affect ALL users
upgrading.

Still, it would help a lot to get an ls -lR of /etc/dovecot from either
of the original reporters.

Is the system setup to listen on port 2000? Is there maybe an old process
already listening on port 2000?

Try

sudo fuser -v -n tcp 2000/tcp

And paste the output here if it shows any processes already listening on
that port.

If there's nothing listening there, just try

sudo apt-get -f install

and it should finish any configuration steps necessary.

Re: [Bug 652433] Re: Init script dependency error: krb5-kdc starts before slapd

2010-10-02 Thread Sam Hartman
In Debian unstable installing krb5-kdxc-ldap automatically changes the
order. This could be backported.

Clint Byrum cl...@fewbar.com wrote:

Since both services may depend on the other in ways that will break, we
can only support a default configuration.

The server guide currently does not have kerberos depending on LDAP, nor
does it suggest LDAP depend on kerberos.

So, the current configuration is probably sufficient, and dependencies
can be adjusted for specific configurations as necessary.

Setting importance to wishlist, as this is ultimately a feature request
not a bug.

[Bug 647664] Re: Unhelpful Security labelling error with read-only floppy image

2010-10-02 Thread Dave Gilbert
I can see that it would make sense to allow /usr/lib and /usr/share to
be read.

The wider question is how to give sane errors; the error didn't say anything
about it being the floppy image, so it was luck
that this was the only thing I'd changed other wise it would have been
difficult to track down.
Tracking down that it was the /usr/lib would have been non-trivial as well for
those of us not familiar with the rules it has.

[Bug 651182] Re: Invocations of /etc/init.d/mailman start spawns multiple instances

2010-10-02 Thread Andrea Gelmini
Hi all,
and thanks a lot for your attention.
The simple patch in attachment fix the problem, so it means
   the bug is inside
   /usr/lib/mailman/bin/mailmanctl
   not in init script
   /etc/init.d/mailman

   I suppose there's a wrong implementation of flag '-s':

   -s/--stale-lock-cleanup
If mailmanctl finds an existing master lock, it will normally exit
with an error message. With this option, mailmanctl will perform an
extra level of checking. If a process matching the host/pid described
in the lock file is running, mailmanctl will still exit, but if no
matching process is found, mailmanctl will remove the apparently stale
lock and make another attempt to claim the master lock.

Thanks a lot for your work,
Andrea

[Bug 653738] [NEW] Microversion update SRU for clamav in Lucid

Clamav 0.96.3 testing and packaging is mature enough for this to go into
lucid-proposed and eventually updates.

The current package from Maverick, when built for Lucid, passes all
tests in lp:qa-regression-testing and integration testing with it's
rdepends is regression free. This update is binary compatible to the
current packages in lucid, so no rdepends are affected.

[Bug 634488] Re: new virtual machines do not boot

2010-10-02 Thread William Ahern
I ran into the same problem after upgrading from Lucid to Maverick. The
problem is that vmbuilder isn't changing the disk file format from `raw'
to `cow2' when moving the image from /tmp to the install location. To
get the VM to boot just fire up virsh, edit [vm], and change driver
name='qemu' type='raw/ to driver name='qemu' type='qcow2'/.

If you're not familiar with vi, then run virsh like `EDITOR=nano virsh
'

[Bug 653828] [NEW] windows computers can't resolve samba share names in 10.04

2010-10-02 Thread kakaroto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

After upgrading my ubuntu server from 9.04 to 10.04, the window
computers couldn't resolve samba shared names anymore, the error code
displayed by Windows was 0x80070035.

I was using the ubuntu server as a samba server, using 'share' as the
security authentication method, it has been working very well under
previous ubuntu versions but, after upgrading to 10.04, the windows
computers can't access the server shares anymore; the linux computers
don't have any problems (I can access the shares from linux).

As a workaround, I've added the name of the server in
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts; but I'd like to know how to fix
the problem without modifying every windows computer.

[root]# dpkg -l samba
ii samba 2:3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2 SMB/CIFS file,
print, and login server for Unix

[root]# cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS \n \l

Please let me know if you need additional information.

Regards,
Toshiro.

[Bug 635584] Re: Plymouth does not show splash with ubuntu minimal

2010-10-02 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, so you're booting without the 'splash' option - it's expected
behavior that the plymouth graphical splash is not shown in that case.
To see the graphical splash, you just need to addl this 'splash' option
to your kernel commandline.

[Bug 653433] [NEW] time-admin asks to install ntp even when ntpdate is installed

2010-10-02 Thread Onkar Shinde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

According to description of ntpdate, it is a client to sync time with
time servers. This package is installed by default. But when I try to
use 'Time and Date' administration UI to set the configuration to 'Keep
synchronized with internet servers' first time, it asks me to install
'ntp' package. ntp package contains the network time daemon and is
unnecessary for most desktop install.

And even though the ntpdate is installed by default, the configuration
is set to manual instead of auto sync.

The grub2 package would be removed when you selected the grub (i.e.,

manual action taken by the user, not as a result of any packages in the

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-02 Thread Rich Wales
If this bug report is invalid w/r/t the indicator application, please
advise what needs to be done in order for the problem to be addressed.
It would (IMO) by a very bad thing if this problem were to be neglected,
and if Maverick were to be released without anything being done, on
account of the issue getting stuck in the middle of a finger-pointing
contest. I'm not criticizing the invalid status label as such — if
the bug doesn't belong here, then it doesn't belong here, no matter how
serious it is — but it's got to belong *somewhere*, and it sounds to me
like it's an issue whose classification is not at all obvious to the
users who are suffering from it.

[Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-10-02 Thread oblong
System/hardware:
10.04 (lucid) 2.6.32-25-generic

1024x768

$ lspci|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE
Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03)

This reproduces the problem consistently (gnome-screensaver is
installed):

System|Preferences|Screensaver.

By default, AntSpotlight is selected. After a couple of seconds the
screen goes blank, sometimes with vertical zebra stripes.

syslog contains:

Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.425838]
[drm:i915_gem_entervt_ioctl] *ERROR* Reenabling wedged hardware, good luck
Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.740027]
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Oct 2 12:26:41 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5531.740038] render error detected,
EIR: 0x

Oct 2 12:26:43 ubuntu-desktop kernel: [ 5533.792017] [drm:i915_gem_idle]
*ERROR* hardware wedged

So after a reboot (pressing the power button seems to more-or-less
cleanly shutdown), at GRUB, I've pressed 'e' to edit and after quiet
splash I've added i915.modetest=1 (no quotes).

After that, I can go to the screen saver preferences and there is no
black screen/crash. Screensaver comes in after the specified time and
works, probably slowly, though.

However, I then realised that modetest should have been modeset. So, not
surprisingly,
syslog reports:

kernel: [ 18.768163] i915: Unknown parameter `modetest'

If I use modeset=0, or modeset=1, then the blanking/crash still
happens when I go to the screensaver preferences.

So, modetest=0 or modetest=1 (either one avoids the blanking) is doing
*something*. But what, and why?

Anyway, I'm happy to live with this until the official release of
Maverick, which hopefully will solve things.

Status in Gnome Settings Daemon: New
 Status in Application Indicators: Invalid
Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 == General description ==

On some Ubuntu installs with two or more keyboard layouts (e.g. Russian and
US English), after some time the keyboard layouts start switching in an
endless loop and gnome-settings-daemon starts using more and more CPU until
 it reaches 100%.

 == Known information ==

 1) Most people here confirm that this happens with non-GTK (Java or Qt)
windows more often then with native GTK.
 2) Possible fixes are killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon or
disabling the Separate layout for each window option in keyboard
 preferences window.
 3) The second fix, however didn't work for some people.
 4) The bug happens both on upgrade installs and clean installs of Ubuntu,
confirmed with RC and Alpha 3.
 5) The bug is specific to Ubuntu, not exisiting in Arch Linux and
 AgiliaLinux.
 6) Having such a problem in a final release will make keyboard use very
problematic for Russian users, so Ubuntu can lose many users.
 7) The bug is still not fixed in GNOME 2.32, which again proves that it's an
 Ubuntu-specific issue.
 8) For some users, the bug disappears after 2 to 15 minutes of use.
 9) Confirmed for almost any key set for switching layouts (Shift+Alt,
 Shift+Ctrl, CapsLock, Alt, Ctrl)
 10) Probably happens only with Cyrrilic layouts (Russian, Macedonian)

I have a similar issue with a Targus PAWM004 Wireless Mouse, the thing
is that the mouse seems to work (i can click, use the mouse wheel, use
both clicks) but the mouse pointer on the screen don't move, i execute
this on a terminal:

cat /dev/input/mouse2

and when i move the mouse some text appears on the terminal, which means
that the device is talking but there is no movement on the screen.

Should i fill a new bug report?

Hello Col., Thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

The error messages in DpkgTerminalLog.txt that show this failure are
here:

Selecting previously deselected package mail-stack-delivery.

.../mail-stack-delivery_1%3a1.2.12-1ubuntu7_all.deb) ...

subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

Marking Incomplete pending respond from Col. Sood.

I believe there is a problem with your downloaded packages. You should
try to clear your cache and then re-attempt the package upgrades or

 Run

 apt-get clean

[Bug 647488] Re: when xorg starts, screen is corrupted

2010-10-02 Thread swmike
I do not have any xorg.conf file created, so it's running default.

With nomodeset I get 660 fps in glxgears, without it I get 60.

I don't really know what part of the solutions in the 6411525 bug you
want me to try, I don't really see any of them being applicable to my
problem.

I just distupgraded again and the problem still remains.

[Bug 653362] Re: package mail-stack-delivery 1:1.2.12-1ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-10-02 Thread Clint Byrum
And just like that, I see that another user has experienced this exact
same sequence of events in DpktTerminalLog.txt.

Marking Confirmed in light of that.

Setting importance to Medium, as it seems to be affecting users who are
upgrading from Lucid to Maverick, but does not affect ALL users
upgrading.

Still, it would help a lot to get an ls -lR of /etc/dovecot from either
of the original reporters.

[Bug 653443] [NEW] Corrupt graphics after bootsplash on dell inspiron 600m

2010-10-02 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Hi there. I'm trying my best to file this properly, and I hope the
report can help pinpoint the issue I'm having. Part of this is a repost
from the SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL Launchpad-Answers Ubuntu section, but I
have some more information now and feel better about posting an official
bug. Here goes:

Hey everyone. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper, and for the most
part it's been great times. My desktop computer is totally solid, even
while running the Maverick beta. However, I've run into a large issue
trying to get the current Maverick build running on my old laptop. The
device in question is a Dell Inspiron 600M (got it from someone who
didn't want it anymore). I had it running Lucid with no huge issues, but
I wanted to take advantage of the nicer theme and upgrades to the
package repos. I wouldn't have bothered this early, but as I said, it's
been running nicely on my desktop. As such, I seem to have hit a pretty
nasty bug/regression, and I'm wondering if anyone can help out. Here's
what I've got:

I installed the beta using the same cd I had made for my desktop.
Installation went through without an issue, and I was able to reboot
into my new desktop with no problem. However, after running update
manager to do a partial upgrade into the current state of Maverick, I'm
unable to get the computer to properly boot on restart. After the ubuntu
logo shows up, insead of going properly to the login screen I get a
strange graphic... basically a wall containing the purple/white-ish hues
of the login background, but thinly vertically striped (it would seem,
sort of hard to properly explain, as the stripes are the same color). If
I blindly hit enter, and enter my password, the screen goes a strange
pattern of grey (similar to the toolbars on the desktop). I couldn't get
it to properly do anything from here, except that once or twice I was
able to ctrl-alt-del and hit enter to shut down (so keyboard input is
working). It kinda sounds like part of whatever is on the screen (a
toolbar, for example) is being stretched through the whole screen, but
it doesn't look like a resolution issue. I tried reinstalling many, many
times (very tedious) in different fashions, to try and nail down what
might be the culprit...

And I think I have! I've gone through over 400 packages, often updating
one at a time and then restarting to try and find which package is
giving me trouble, and it seems to be this one: upon installing gnome-
settings daemon on a Maverick Beta build and restarting, I'm getting the
graphical corruption again. I posted my issue on September 19th, so the
issue must have happened in an update to g-s-d between the publishing of
the beta iso (September 2nd) and then. If it helps, I've tried
installing the RC directly using that iso, and I get the same
corruption.

So... I dunno. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out, since
no one seemed interested in helping with the grunt-work. Is there
anything I can do to further nail down this bug? I'd really like to help
get it fixed before Maverick final comes out, assuming it isn't
something specific to my laptop specifically. I've run out of computers
to test, and my desktop is still running up-to-date Maverick perfectly.

Help?

2010-10-02 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello ilio, thank you for taking the time to file this bug report and
work with us to make Ubuntu better!

This may be an issue with the configuration of the system. This error is
rather telling:

Setting up dovecot-common (1:1.2.9-1ubuntu7) ...

Is the system setup to listen on port 2000? Is there maybe an old process
already listening on port 2000?

Try

sudo fuser -v -n tcp 2000/tcp

And paste the output here if it shows any processes already listening on
that port.

If there's nothing listening there, just try

sudo apt-get -f install

and it should finish any configuration steps necessary.

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change

2010-10-02 Thread Bruce R
Some afterthoughts.
In case it's not been clear, I am not interested in scoring 'brownie points'
for 'being smart', only in obtaining a 'CD Quality' profile that consistently
works for friends and other users, leaving 'B-cubed' to other folk, but so far
I have not seen any meaningful definition of 'lame' versus 'lamemp3enc' terms
and profiles, so if we are to be pedantic, I will in future just refer to the
'BruceR' versus 'KennoVO' profiles.
Meanwhile, I see that the Ubuntu 10.10 'rc' releases are still exhibiting some
inconsistencies in operation between the Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic,
in adding ubuntu-restricted-extras and sound-juicer, where initiation by the
Software Center then needs completion or reinstallation by Synaptic. However,
once installed, Audio CD Extractor's less obvious CD Quality, MP3 default
profile is a KennoVO style profile (audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 !

simply amended with 'quality=2' before use in a LiveCD session.
It's then a lot slower encoding than my 'Mint-9 on a stick' and still has 'a
strident and raucous colouration' to my ears, but I really must get some
younger, keener, and more musical ears to compare the results against the
original CDs.

[Bug 646794] Re: menu items added by gedit plugins not shown

2010-10-02 Thread saksmlz
i upgraded package appmenu-gtk to 0.1.9-0ubuntu4 version and there are
plugins menu items in gedit appmenu indicator, but there is one issue.

Menu items wich are GtkMenuItems work well, but menu items which are
GtkMenu - act and look like GtkMenuItems and do not have submenus.

The example is Change case plugin. Steps to reproduce:
1. activate Change case plugin
2. open file
3. type some text and select it
4. open Edit menu and find Change case menu. There is 4 menu items in it's
popup

but there is no arrow and popup in the appmenu-indicator.

** Changed in: appmenu-gtk (Ubuntu)
   Status: Fix Released = Incomplete

[Bug 653446] [NEW] kmix breaks pulseaudio volume per channel setup when changing volume to 100% or 0%

2010-10-02 Thread Murz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdemultimedia

I have setup pulseaudio 5.1 configuration with different volume per channel:
http://imagebin.ca/view/0wF1MTI.html
If I change volume via kmix tray icon, it change volume in each channel without
breaking volume configuration.

But when I changing volume to 100% via kmix tray icon, it sets all channels to
same volume!
And if I goes back to 50% all chanels have same volume too, so all my volume
configuration lost!

And if I change volume to 0% I have the same problem.

I think that kmix must don't break pulseaudio volume configuration!

[Bug 331742] Re: Gnome-schedule doesn't execute scheduled tasks

2010-10-02 Thread quadra
Back to the original problem, as reported in post #3 and #7. The fact is that
in many cases, we can successfully test a task by clicking Run selected task,
but then, in real life it won't run.
Two main technical reasons:
1) The test is PATH-aware, the real task (using cron) is not
2) The test is insensitive to the output mode (Default or X application),
the real task is not

I think this is indeed a bug worth to be fixed.
At least, the message that appears when testing a task should be improved
(Note about working directory of executed tasks, it is confusing.)
Additionally, the Run selected task function should be improved.
