[Bug 621265] Re: Slow Wireless Connection in Intel 3945abg

After further testing, I can say that speeds the driver is still
underperforming in terms of speed and weak signal management.

iwl3945: 10 Mbps
ndiswrapper: 23 Mbps

iwl3945 speeds are better, but still slower than they should be.

[Bug 580961] Re: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings

2011-01-22 Thread Sergey Nagaytsev
@Shimi Chen, thank you for testing, but this way of reporting is
counter-constructive, since it's not reproducible.

Please supply minimal live examples of:
* good and bad Hebrew archives
* descriptions of how did you construct them. Scripts for automated testing are
especially welcome.
* files attempted to compress, under surely good archiver (I see 7z is good)
* files extracted after bad compression, also under surely good archiver

Here is the test data I prepared for many languages along with test
automation script, if something is incomplete for Hebrew (additional
letter elements like Latin diacritics ?), please add.

With reproducible tests at hand, I will try to contact the patch
authors, or if this fail, we should give this problem to some highly
international team (at a university ?).

2011-01-22 Thread Inkwina
/src/time/ntp-servers-list.c from the gnome-system-tools package also needs to
be patched.
Currently the time-admin config tool hard codes the ntp servers (seems like a
list of stratum 0 servers).
Minimally the ubuntu.pool.ntp.og servers should be added, but Ideally no
servers should be hard-coded.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: sd

Dear Ubuntu Friends, I write because I have an error on my ubuntu, is a grave
error.
My computer is an OKI NB0108 has a SD card reader. I do many pictures and
videos for a web page I have on a locality. The error comes when I put the SD
card in my computer with Ubuntu, and when I give a copy to all content, and I
keep a folder on my Ubuntu system, instantly disappears entire contents of my
SD card, alone on the folder you've saved. Already happened to me ten times,
and when I try to recover with recovery software is unable to recover all the
content. I hope that since ubuntu is to review the situation, and find which is
the bug that causes it to erase all data on the SD card and make them go away
completely without chance of recovery, nor are stored anywhere on your hard
disk where I have installed Ubuntu. I hope they make all the necessary steps to
repair this situation. So far I have had to change the operating system until
you solve this problem in Ubuntu. I tested with different SD cards of 1, 2, 4,
6, 8, 16, 32 GB and all data is lost in a unrecoverable.

I hope you will manage and arrange everything properly. Greetings.

Re: [Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown because init cannot be restarted

2011-01-22 Thread Clint Byrum

Thanks for Lucid-fix. I did immediately test with new 'libc6' and
 'upstart' from Lucid-proposed:

 1. just new 'libc6' - does not change anything (8 orphaned inodes after
 reboot).

 2. + new 'upstart' - gives 1 orphaned inode after reboot.

 3. new ('libc6' + 'upstart'), 'apt-get install --reinstall libc6
 shutdown -r now' - 4 orphaned inodes.

So it improves the situation definitely, but does not solve it
completely. Did I miss something to update?

No Ingo, you did everything right, I see similar effects.

That is why sysvinit was added to the bug report. The issue is that
while we've restored the ability to tell init to re-exec itself, we have
also introduced a race condition. telinit u exits as soon as it has sent
SIGTERM to pid 1. Almost the very next line in /etc/init.d/umountroot
attempts the remount of / as readonly. If the signal handler doesn't
complete the re-exec before this, then the remount will still fail.

I've been testing a few ways to make telinit or umountroot block until
init re-execs. The important thing is that this way 10.04.2 will ship
with an init that *can* re-exec.

If you add 'sleep 1' after the telinit u line in /etc/init.d/umountroot,
that should give you a much better chance of succeeding the remount.
Hopefully there will be a proper fix available for that early next week,
but I don't know if it will be accepted for 10.04.2 or have to come as
an update to 10.04.2.

[Bug 580961] Re: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings

2011-01-22 Thread Shimi Chen
I apologize for begin counter-constructive it's that I lack the
technical knowledge to make such scripts.

I attached a .zip file I created in windows using 7zip 9.20.
Here is the screenshot of the archive creation dialog(did not change any
setting):
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/8361/7zipi.png

And here is a screenshot difference between file-roller and windows zip viewer:
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/4492/comparisonu.png

And lastly a screenshot of the extracted files in nautilus:
http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/7253/extracted.png

I did try your uploaded .7z file and I can see the file name fine in
Ubuntu.

I also tried compressing the attached archive in .7z instead of .zip and
it works. The problem seems to be with .zip archives.

[Bug 701753] Re: Internal HDD thrashing when using Transmission

2011-01-22 Thread jordan
Peter,

I wish I had a more helpful answer to give you, but all of this sounds
consistent with my previous comments --

(1) Linux's NTFS drivers do not play nicely with high volumes of random
disk reads and writes, such as those generated by p2p applications. You
may want to use a different filesystem than NTFS. (The same holds true
for encrypted filesystems, by the way.)

(2) You can also try to reduce the frequency of disk reads and writes by
using Transmission 2.10 or higher, which has a memory cache for this
purpose. I know about the ppa URL listed above, but I'm not an Ubuntu
user myself, so I don't know how to use that URL in Ubuntu. Your Linux
Expert friend might have better ideas on this.

(3) If the hard drive is literally buzzing from the strain of all the
disk reads and writes, it also may be a sign of impending disk failure.
You might want to make a backup of that disk before doing anything else.

[Bug 504440] Re: sd card safely remove drive kills reader device

2011-01-22 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Two ideas:

(1) Is there any way to implement a reconnect device option, as
suggested in comment #7 some months ago?

While less than ideal, this would be one way to help people who make
this mistake to recover from it themselves.

(2) Alternatively, a language change to the context menu, so the item
concerned does not say Safely remove drive, but instead says something
closer to Power down external device might help, since it then (a)
sounds a bit scarier and (b) does not look so similar to the Windows
message people are apparently confusing it with.

Won't fix seems inappropriate to me. If I can't be fixed at a
deeply technical kernel level, fine, let's come up with a way to
minimize the issue at a UI level instead. Not just ignore the problem.

[Bug 680525] Re: first tab in firefox has a constant loading icon and won't close

2011-01-22 Thread wizodd
After deletion of the tabs to the right of the frozen tab, it leaves one
untitled tab to the right which cannot be deleted.
If another tab is opened to it's right, the tab may be deleted, but another
opens instantly.

I'm work on feedparser, and I've tested the EA podcast URL provided

/var/log anyway.

[Bug 480220] Re: [i945] [i945][karmic] S-Video: PAL output is garbled

2011-01-22 Thread Till W.
Absolutely the same here for me (i915GM in a Dell D410 used with
D-Dock's TV output, Ubuntu 10.04, kernel 2.6.32-27-generic).

After boot I have a stable NTSC output but can switch to PAL using
xrandr --output TV1 --set mode PAL. However, the picture gets unstable
then: every time I move the mouse or have a lot of harddrive activity
the TV picture jumps up and down, sometimes only some (rectangular)
areas of the picture are affected. When there is no mouse movement the
picture is stable.

$ xrandr --verbose
...
TV1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (0x4f) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y
...
 1024x768 (0x4f) 26.9MHz *current +preferred
   h: width 1024 start 1025 end 1088 total 1120 skew0 clock 24.0KHz
   v: height 768 start 769 end 800 total 801 clock 30.0Hz

When I create use a new modeline with doubled dotclock like this:

$ xrandr --newmode foo 54 1024 1025 1088 1120 768 769 800 801

...I get a stable picture.

BTW: If there is no connection to the TV set at boot time, xrandr will
always show TV1 disconnected no matter if I plug in the TV out cable
or not. Maybe both effects are caused by kernel mode settings. I have to
try with disabled KMS.

[Bug 637827] Re: Firefox and Thunderbird (XUL) menus don't appear in the global menu bar

2011-01-22 Thread Matt Sturgeon
Is a firefox (high-level) extension really the right way to go about
this?

Would it not be better to patch XULRunner (Gecko) to be compliant with
indicator-appmenu (the back-end for Unity's menu and indicator-applet-
appmenu). This would then apply to ANY XUL/Gecko based application with
a Menu Bar and would work on any system with libindicate and indicator-
appmenu.

It would need to: a) Send menus over DBus. and b) If menu is being drawn
elsewhere - do not draw menu within window.

Basically it would mean porting Chris Coulson's code to XULRunner,
instead of an XUL extension...

[Bug 628060] Re: [ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI] ALSA test tone not correctly played back

The described solution did not work, so I uninstalled timidity-deamon and the
problem went away. Further problems were caused by me selecting the incorrect
sound card, I meant to use an integrated one, not the Ensoniq.

[Bug 303522] Re: there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily

2011-01-22 Thread Linards Ticmanis
Ideally, Synaptic should have a Menu option install all matching -dbg
packages which will get all -dbg packages for currently installed
packages. I seem to remember that at one point one Linux system I worked
on had both that and install all matching -dev packages as well. Might
have been an older Ubuntu, or an older SuSE Linux. My memory is a bit
hazy on this.

Ideally such an option should stay on and automatically install and
remove -dbg packages for all future package installations and removals.

Currently I'm clicking my way through the -dbg packages one by one, and
installing everything that doesn't want to bring in any new non-dbg
packages. Not very comfortable to say the least.

[Bug 706432] [NEW] glade crashes if you drag the define a new column row of List Stores when no columns are defined yet

2011-01-22 Thread Jan Claeys
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glade-3

Steps to reproduce this:
* start Glade in GtkBuilder mode and create a List Store tree model
* make sure the new list store is selected in the object tree
* in the properties editor, there is a treeview to add columns to the list
store; do NOT add any columns
* drag the row that reads define a new column to the empty space below it
in the treeview

This makes Glade crash with the following line:

GladeUI-GTK:ERROR:glade-column-types.c:456:columns_changed_idle:
assertion failed: (columns)

Doctormo first discovered this because he was using a wacom tablet, and
it's easy then to accidentally drag something when you just try to click

Tested by me and happens consistently on an up-to-date maverick
(64-bits) natty (32-bits).

[Bug 655405] Re: evolution calendar-, task- and notivication-lists crashes by opening

2011-01-22 Thread Raymond Hill
We've had the same problem today after an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10:

The Evolution calendar has quit unexpectedly. // Your calendars will
not be available until Evolution is restarted

After a bit of trying to figure what was wrong by searching on internet,
on a hunch, I went and opened the calendar text file in
~/.evolution/calendar/local/system/calendar.ics. I checked the
encoding of the file by clicking File / Save As... (which allows to
check the encoding), and I noticed it was ISO-8859-1.

I made a copy of calendar.ics just in case, and saved a copy after
forcing UTF-8 encoding in the Save as... dialog box. That solved the
problem (except that accented letters were mangled -- not a big deal).

Hope this works for other as well.

[Bug 579876] Re: encrypted home directory doesn't mount after password change

2011-01-22 Thread Robert Simmons
This bug is very critical. It also happens when you change a password
using the user management module in KDE's system settings. When you use
system settings it asks for the admin password then it runs the password
change as root. The next time you login you're hosed. You have to drop
down to console and change your password back because the home directory
stays encrypted by your old password.

Bad, bad, bad. All methods of changing a password should do EXACTLY the
same thing or set of things. If you have more than one person on a
server, you could lock someone out just by changing their password as
root (which could happen if that user forgot his password and called you
to have i reset).

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 + current patches with KDE 4.5.5.
