[Bug 719091] Re: Can't upload to YouTube

[Bug 883752] Re: Software Centre is the most horrible, bloated and slow application I have ever used.
Hi Jamie, thanks for your report. Indeed, there is no question that Software Center in Oneiric is much slower than that in Natty. Many of these slowdowns were an unintended side effect after we moved to a brand new UI. Don't worry, we are not settling for this, we simply need to optimize things to make them fast again. I can assure you that speeding up Software Center is a top priority of the Software Center team for the Precise cycle. And as we make improvements, we will SRU them as much as possible to Oneiric. Please check bug 876210 for details as we do this work. I know that that bug mentions startup time specifically, but the performance improvements we will be making span everywhere in the app where things are plain TOO slow. Thanks again! [Bug 881131] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 freezes during installation on Athlon XP. Segfault in BusyBox while setting up apparmor.
** Description changed: - Oneiric freezes during installation (The Release notes did not say, that - my Athlon XP CPU was too old for Oneiric.) + Oneiric freezes during installation. + (The Release notes did not say, that my Athlon XP CPU was too old for Oneiric.) a) From Live CD: Install Ubuntu icon opens a new window, where I can choose the language. But it won't let me continue, only quit. No matter, which language I choose. When I try to start the installer again, the GUI disappears, the text console appears, with the mouse cursor on top. Cannot switch terminals with Ctrl-Alt-F1/2/3. Only Alt-SysReq-E/U/K/B possible. b) When I try to install from the Alternate CD: Everything works fine ... install basic system, enter username, configuring apt, no automatic update, configuring language-pack-en-base, tasksel additional software (none chosen) ... - up to the point Configuring apparmor. Then system freezes and the Shift-Lock and Scroll-Lock LEDs on the keyboard begin to flash. No Ctrl-AltF1/2/..., no Alt-SysReq-E/B/... So, unfortunately I cannot tell you anything about the logs. - - From a previous try with the Alternate CD, where I had the syslog - console active during installation, I remember, that the final message - was panic. init terminated. and a BusyBox problem. I do not remember - the exact call stack output. But if it helps, I can try to re-produce - it. Maybe I can capture the log output via ttyS0. + up to the point Configuring apparmor. Then system freezes and the Shift-Lock and Scroll-Lock LEDs on the keyboard begin to flash. No Ctrl-AltF1/2/..., no Alt-SysReq-E/B/... Probably this is not relevant for the problem, just to let you know: I ran both installs via netboot. [Bug 880865] Re: asus eeepc 1101HA won't resume under linux 3.0.0.12; works under 2.6.38
I tested with the mainline kernel, both version 3.1-rc10 and v3.1 final. Both still have the problem. I additionally ran into some trouble in that the boot screen would freeze with waiting for network configuration, and the system would not respond to any keypresses anymore (but sshing into it still worked). If I changed to a different virtual terminal before the freeze, X would start properly, but on the first login attempt X crashes and shows some random characters on a console, before a restarted X would come up. Logging in on this new X instance works normally. While the boot screen was frozen or while the first instance of X was running, I was unable to change virtual terminals, either through (ctrl+)alt+fnX or through the chvt command in an ssh session. chvt just hangs indefinitely. Once the first X session has been replaced by the second, this all works normally. These boot anomalities do not occur with ubuntu distribution kernels. Since I'm also having other problems with the video card of this machine, I also tried blacklisting the poulsbo and/or psb_gfx kernel modules, and running X in vesa or fbdev mode (fbdev is the default, there is no working driver that allows X to not use fbdev), but none of these seemed to have any effect in any way on the suspend/resume bug. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/880865 Title: asus eeepc 1101HA won't resume under linux 3.0.0.12; works under 2.6.38 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/880865/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 883993] [NEW] offlineimap 6.3.3 deleting messages erroneously
Public bug reported: I routinely discover that offlineimap decides to delete a large chunk of my LISTS folder (quick large, as you can imagine (42,000 messages). [Impact] Data loss, potentially forever if not monitored. This happens about daily for me. [Development Fix] upgrade to using libimap2 version 2.24 [Stable Fix] What is needed: Relevant upstream commit: https://github.com/nicolas33/offlineimap/commit/520e39d35536172d03b22d012cf4d8828687f2ff [Test Case] 1) Install offlineimap 6.3.3 2) sync a mailbox with a large number of messages (6,000) 3) continue to run offlineimap for a while (a day-ish?) until the server sends a response that imaplib2 version 2.22 doesn't like 4) observe the deletion of messages. 5) upgrade to imaplib2 version 2.24 6) continue syncing 7) observe no loss of data due to server messages [Regression Potential] If cherry picking the commit, none predicted. [Bug 879824] Re: Touch gestures result in pointer lock
I noticed the recording is corrupted at the end. The last touch sequence is cut off. You probably killed it with ctrl-c instead of waiting for 10 seconds of inactivity for the recording to complete. We had a fix in utouch-evemu trunk that prevented the corruption on ctrl-c, but hadn't released it into ubuntu until now. [Bug 874880] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 Headphone-To-Speaker Switching for Intel HDA
So after reading a bunch of different alsa-related solutions I tried to set my audio codec explicitly. For this I followed this manual: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto Basically I added to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf this line: # options snd-hda-intel model=targa-2ch-dig # At the moment it seems like my problem was solved. Without plugged-in jack sound comes from built-in speakers, while with plugged jack sound comes to external amplifier. Here's a list with most of available model names: === http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt === I picked mine for Targa/MSI with 2-channel based on my netbook name. So please try to find a proper model for your audio codec and hopefully your problem will be solved. But anyway I'm still disappointed why I didn't have this issue before 11.10 (10.04 - 11.04 worked perfectly regarding audio things). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/874880 Title: Ubuntu 11.10 Headphone-To-Speaker Switching for Intel HDA To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/874880/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken
On 30/10/11 19:11, Tal Liron wrote: No, but I'm suggesting that this is a point where your patience has run too thin and you refuse go the extra mile. I can't believe it makes you feel good about Ubuntu to witness these riots, as you call them. It doesn't feel good, no. What is missing is a mutual willingness to agree to disagree and continue to work together. Think about it. The decisions involved were taken, and it makes sense for us to move on and fix other issues. We have done this on many other issues on many other occasions, and sometimes I don't like the result but we move on, and sometimes we expect others to do the same. What we're told in this case, however, is that if you don't change this we're leaving. OK fine. If only. Instead of leaving, what we get is continued haranguing. My point is that what's broken is not the engagement; we're engaged. What's broken is the sense of entitlement on one side of this conversation - do what I want, or I leave, and you're an idiot by the way. As I said previously, in a collaborating community, that sort of language is toxic. So I ask folk to stop doing it. You have to admit that something isn't working quite right: on the one hand, the Ayatana mailing list is open for everyone to read, but on the other hand, there seems to be a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding of what goes on inside. There is no mystery about what goes on inside. Bugs get filed and fixed, ideas get discussed publicly and privately, decisions get made, work gets done. Pretending there is some active conspiracy or hostility on the inside creates a sense of hostility towards those who work full time trying to solve the very problems you're interested in seeing solutions to - in general, not in this specific case. I assume you want to see a solution to the shortage of free software on the average machine? The folks inside are completely devoted to that. We are a project that has two different kinds of competence: volunteer (undirected) and full time (directed). Most of the full time contributors also participate in an undirected, volunteer way. Now, those two kinds of competence are BOTH needed for our shared success. But they are different. And the people who most need to acknowledge the difference are the volunteers. Because you can volunteer on many projects, but there is only one where you can help ship exactly the same bits as the professionals - elsewhere, you either have a project with very little consequence/adoption, or you get to work on the playground, while the professionals take your work and ship it as and when they like it in a separate product. So the collaboration of community and company is what makes Ubuntu special. That is QUITE different to a community project in which Canonical employees happen to volunteer a bunch of time. And harsh talk of inside vs outside undermines the value of the contribution that full time team makes. We can solve many problems in Ubuntu that have plagued pure-volunteer projects for years. What frustrates me here is the sense of taking that for granted. Please don't. If we don't work together, we will fail, and the world will lose Ubuntu. Perhaps you thrive on antagonism, or perhaps you have convinced yourself that loud detractors are inevitable and harmless to any large projects. But I know that if this were my project, and I were reading some of the comments, I would feel a sense that something is broken. Do you ever read LKML? I believe this situation is fixable, or I would not have opened this as a bug. I read your blog and have been following Ubuntu for years. You have injected your persona into the project, so, like or not, you are going to get some personal attacks. I would imagine you're used to that by now. But, it's that particular role you fulfil that makes me wonder if you're the right man to be managing or even opining about the community process. In your engagement of the community, you are too easily tempted to confrontation. The alternative to confrontation is to ignore you. Is that what you're asking for? Everything is going to go downhill once you start calling our requests selfish. I haven't labelled all requests selfish. I've said it's selfish to assume that an issue that you feel is an issue that has universal acclaim and therefor must be addressed, when there is evidence to suggest that is not the case. I'm not upset about having public bugs; I'm just unimpressed by people who grandstand about a particular bug when they could be helping to fix others with that energy. I see the conflict of goals as analogous to that between QA and the programmers: there's a reason you don't want the programmer doing the usability testing. The programmers will, unknowingly, test only what they know is working. Their imagination is constrained by the challenges of their work. Ubuntu is in some ways your personal project: you are predisposed to get overly defensive and even testy when

[Bug 667071] Re: Folders opened by wrong application
Hi, This may be a new bug, or just a nuisance... I was a subscriber to the original bug; the workaround was OK. I upgraded to 11.04, earlier this year. Recently, something seems to have changed: when I click on a photo (.jpg), I expect it to open with image viewer, as it has always done (I have been using Ubuntu since 2005). However, it now opens with movie player, showing a blank window, as the file is not a movie. I did have some short .avi videos mixed in with the set of photos, so I suspect that one of these has triggered the open-with movie player. However, now that there is no way to change the default application, I seem to be stuck with having to individually use the open-with feature whenever I want to look at photos. Any suggestions? Could you (or someone else) tell me how the users that don't use this feature would be affected? Say the option is expressed in a dialog box. That dialog box is now longer and more complicated than it needs to be. When a dialog box is more complicated, it feels harder to use, for everyone. So, putting that option in a visible UI makes the system feel harder for everyone. You know the feeling - you just want to get something simple done and you have to look through lots of complicated dialog boxes. Now, if you're having fun exploring all the options in the system, that's not work, that's fun. But for most people, they are happiest if the system just works; having to go find an option to change its behaviour is bad for them, and having lots of options is worse. That's the cost to end-users. So, why not make it an invisible option, say a dconf key that could be turned on with a command line tool or power user config tool? The cost there is in the codebase and in the design. Say the option allows for both vertical and horizontal layout. Then we need to think about all the behaviours and mechanics both horizontally and vertically. And if it's horizontal, we have to think about right-to-left languages as well, like Arabic. So the number of codepaths just got much bigger, the number of quality assurance tests just got bigger. We only have time for a limited amount of testing in any given cycle, so that option means we won't get something else. All these costs add up. Mark Thanks for these clarifications. It would be much more simple if they were posted in the original bug report, without the need of such discussion. Consequences of the problem: This is terribly frustrating in that, because I use the keyboard heavily and much more than the mouse, I'm constantly switching viewports (with the mouse) and then start typing again, only to have my keyboard input going to not only the wrong application, but the wrong viewport, where I cannot even see it. As you can imagine, I have occasionally had some pretty undesirable results due to my keyboard input being directed to the wrong window (e.g., intending to copy and paste between windows residing in different viewports and having my keystrokes, after switching viewports, replacing the source of the copy operation because the mouse focus was on the wrong window/viewport). Expected behavior: When switching viewports, no matter the method, the window at the top of the Z-order for that viewport should get the mouse focus, just as it did in Natty, 10.x, and 9.x. As always, thanks for all you do! Re: [Bug 881022] Re: SD card not detected
Hi Joseph, Thanks for such a quick response. Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. I'm going to have to do more studying of Ubuntu before I work with upstream kernels and tags. I'm not exactly comfortable with selecting and installing a mainstream kernel. I'm a little worried about what it might do to my current Operating System. As for tags I'm not familiar with them. I don't know what they are or where they are. But I thank you again for your quick response. Let me study up some more before getting back to you. [Bug 716458] Re: notify-osd in invisible area of dual screen setup
Some playing around with gdb tells me that in src/defaults.c, in defaults_get_top_corner(), the code used under Unity is the no panel detetected; using workarea fallback branch. In my configuration (1280x1024 on the left, 1024x800 on the right, with bottoms aligned) the workarea rect is {x = 0, y = 24, width = 2560, height = 1000}, which results in the attached screenshot (for very long notifications). ** Attachment added: notifications-are-broooken.png https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/716458/+attachment/2579584/+files/notifications-are-broooken.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/716458 Title: notify-osd in invisible area of dual screen setup To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/notify-osd/+bug/716458/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 884016] [NEW] Upgrade JabRef to Stable/Released Version

[Bug 884019] [NEW] Transfer progress is wrong
Public bug reported: When I move files to an external device the progress bar is almost useless. Example: 1) I begin to move two files (1 GB each) to an SD card. 2) Progress bar is moving at over 100 MB/s until it reaches 1 GB. 3) It's 1 GB for some time before it moves quickly to 2 GB and remains there for some time before the transfer is complete. The problem is, as I understand it, the file is sent to a cache and that it is the action shown. This is quite wrong as the progress bar is there to provide information about how much time/data there is left until the action is complete. I am running an updated version of 11.10.
