[Bug 875440] Re: Cannot authenticate with saslauthd and mysql

2012-02-29 Thread Lafriks
I have tried all possible solutions and only working one is downgrading
to version .23. I did build .25 deb packages for oneiric from upstream
source and can say that this does not help. It not only affects
authorization with mysql but also ldap does not seem to work. To me it
seems libsasl2 can not find correct conf file and it does not meter
where you place it. I have tried all possible places that are defined
where it should look for. Maybe there something to do with multiarch
changes when packaging deb?

[Bug 939212] Re: AMI created from latest i386 Lucid image fails to boot

2012-02-29 Thread Scott Moser
Chetan,
 I suspect you have not done an apt-get update before installing the
ec2-ami-tools that you think are broken. I've done the following and verified
that an instance will boot correctly after being re-bundled with lucid-updates
versions of ec2-ami-tools:

## run an instance of ami-809a48e9
## us-east-1 ami-809a48e9 canonicalubuntu-lucid-10.04-i386-server-20120221
$ ec2-run-instances --region us-east-1 --instance-type m1.small  ami-809a48e9
$ rhost=ec2-107-22-87-33.compute-1.amazonaws.com
$ ssh rhost

## now, assuming all variables are set up for use of ec2-api and ec2-ami
## tools

## add multiverse
$ sudo sed -i 's,main universe$,main universe multiverse,g' \
   /etc/apt/sources.list
$ sudo apt-get update -y
$ sudo apt-get install ec2-api-tools ec2-ami-tools -y
$ dpkg-query --show ec2-api-tools ec2-ami-tools
ec2-ami-tools   1.3-45758-0ubuntu1.1
ec2-api-tools   1.3.46266-0ubuntu1

## assuming all variables set up for use of this
$ BUNDLE_D=/mnt/my.bundle
$ sudo rm -Rf $BUNDLE_D
$ mkdir -p $BUNDLE_D
$ sudo sh -c modprobe loop || :
## may take quite a long time (10s of minutes)
$ sudo -E ec2-bundle-vol --arch i386 --destination $BUNDLE_D --prefix
testbundle.img --user 950047163771 --size 10240 --exclude /mnt,/root/.ssh
--cert=$EC2_CERT --privatekey=$EC2_PRIVATE_KEY
$ sudo chown -R 1000:1000 /mnt/wd
# get current availability-zone, security-group, instance-type, keypair
# from metadata service using ec2metadata
$ ec2-upload-bundle --access-key=$EC2_ACCESS_KEY --secret-key=$EC2_SECRET_KEY
--bucket smoser-amitools-us-east-1 --manifest
$BUNDLE_D/testbundle.img.manifest.xml
$ ec2-register --region us-east-1 --cert=$EC2_CERT
--private-key=$EC2_PRIVATE_KEY
smoser-amitools-us-east-1/testbundle.img.manifest.xml

AMI=ami-abcdefg
## run instance of $AMI
$ ec2-run-instances --region us-east-1 --cert=$EC2_CERT
--private-key=$EC2_PRIVATE_KEY --key default $AMI --group default
--instance-type m1.small

The instance came up fine, and I verified ssh to it.

[Bug 894608] Re: Implementing a bridge slows 10G network

2012-02-29 Thread Simon Déziel
@Michael, I haven't tried to reproduce your issue but maybe some of the
bridge bottleneck comes from the netfilter hooks ?

Maybe you could try setting those sysctl keys :

net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables=0
net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables=0
net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables=0

That is assuming you don't need to firewall inside of a bridge.

is not that fun but was the only way I could work around another very
annoying regression that I documented in bug 941945.

Since reverting to 2.6.32 I've also gone back to using hgfs, and have
not seen the invalid argument issue.

[Another workaround I tried for a while is to use the older method of
SMB mounting the host filesystem; this also seemed to work fine even
with the regular oneiric kernel. Details in the vmware communities
thread linked in the bug desc.]

commit e3530a06c4d84e101e07bbe22075a0e2b3a72086
Author: Mike Milner mike.mil...@canonical.com
Date:   Thu Feb 23 15:13:51 2012 -0400

Include launch_index when creating instances.

Fixes bug 934534.

The launch_index column in the database is used as the ami-launch-index
value
provided by the metadata service.

If launch_index is not specified it defaults to 1. This is incorrect for the
single instance case (should be 0) and doesn't correctly handle
multi-instance
starts.

This branch changes the default launch_index to 0 (to handle the single
instance case) and adds the launch_index in the schedulers for
multi-instance
starts.

[Bug 941922] [NEW] do-release-upgrade races puppet for file contents

2012-02-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is something of a larger problem with configuration management, but
if puppet is running while do-release-upgrade runs, puppet may re-assert
contents of files that the package manager has just changed.

Puppet allows you to key off of the currently running distro release, so
one could imagine boot-critical configuration (filesystems, etc) being
set to e.g. Lucid versions just before a reboot into Precise. If the
reboot succeeds, puppet would subsequently deliver the Precise versions
and things could sort themselves out, but the reboot could well be
stymied by older Lucid versions.

The canonical-memento puppet manifests include a lot of safety features
to prevent precisely this scenario: we insist that /etc be maintained in
bzr, and we halt all configuration management if there are uncommitted
changes there. This means that once the package manager changes any
file in /etc, puppet refuses to run. Not everyone will be as careful as
we are, and even our system is not atomic.

This is of course not specific to do-release-upgrade, and it's a problem
any time you upgrade a package. It's just most dangerous during d-r-u,
because of the breadth and depth of changes.

The upgrade could shut down the puppet agent before upgrading, but once
puppet itself is upgraded that will trigger a restart. It's probably
best to do `puppet agent --disable` before shutting down puppet. Once
this is done, it may be worth warning the sysadmin at the end (perhaps
while advising a reboot) that puppet was running before the upgrade, and
that something like `puppet agent -t --noop` is useful for seeing what
changes puppet would make.

Of course, it's an architectural flaw in puppet that --noop runs still
upload exported resources to the database, and that's just a hazard of
puppet administration these days.

[Bug 941922] Re: do-release-upgrade races puppet for file contents

2012-02-29 Thread Adam Conrad
It seems that this isn't really an update-manager (or package management
in general) issue at all, but rather puppet should be shipping an
apt.conf.d snippet with DPkg::Pre-Invoke and DPkg::Post-Invoke hooks to
stop and start the puppet daemon before and after any operations are
done.

Note that the above fix should solve any package management versus
puppet concurrency issues (from apt all the way up to update-manager)
except for the case of admins running dpkg by hand on individual debs,
but one would hope the admin has a fairly good idea of their expected
outcome in that case.

[Bug 943502] [NEW] whois doesn't properly query .hr/.sx/.pe TLDs and incorrect format for whois.arin.net

2012-02-29 Thread Chris J Arges
Public bug reported:

Problem Description:
whois in oneiric can't query .hr/.sx/.pe TLDs. In addition the query format for
ARIN is different than in precise.

Version affected:
Current Oneiric Version: 5.0.11ubuntu2

How to reproduce:
1) whois google.hr (works on precise, not on oneiric)
2) whois registry.sx google.com.pe
3) whois 74.125.113.102
   if we use this command in precise we see that whois adds n + to the query,
while
   in oneiric it doesn't add that.

[Bug 927805] Re: t1.micro instance defect after dist-upgrade

2012-02-29 Thread Scott Moser
Hi,
  I'm sorry, but there is just not enough information to make any sort of
diagnosis on what caused the issue.
  The 'grub-probe' error messages in the upgrade can be ignored. They're there
only because grub-pc package is installed, but it is not being used. The
pv-grub aki from amazon is loading the image.

  Can you please collect a get-console-output of a failed instance?
  Alternatively, you are welcome to give me access to the ami that you upgraded
and failed, and I can try to look.

  Without one of those bits of information, we really can't make any
progress on this bug. As Ben noted, the issue does not occur on current
AMIs. Without being able to reproduce or see information on a failed
state, we simply cannot help.

  I've tried to reproduce by launching a t1.micro instance of 'ami-311f2b45'
(eu-west-1 ebs/ubuntu-lucid-10.04-i386-server-20110201.1). That is the oldest
ami available that uses the pv-grub kernel you reported this issue on
(aki-4deec439).

  I then ran 'sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'. After
that was successfull, I rebooted. The system came up fine into the
kernel 'vmlinuz-2.6.32-342-ec2' (which is shown in your output).

[Bug 935676] Re: package tomcat6 6.0.28-10ubuntu2.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10

2012-02-29 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for reporting this bug.

It looks like you had a custom /etc/tomcat6/web.xml, which was overwritten
(per admin input) by the package upgrade. Do you know what was in your
original web.xml file?

[Bug 943599] [NEW] [lucid] tomcat6 does not include tomcat-dbcp.jar

2012-02-29 Thread exactt
Public bug reported:

I didn't wanna reopen
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat6/+bug/283852 but I have
the same problem with a fresh install of Ubuntu Lucid server x64.

My application, or to be more precise, a library of it relies on Tomcat
DBCP and therefore throws an exception

Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSource

The proposed work-around is still valid.

** Changed in: whois (Ubuntu)
 Assignee: Chris J Arges (christopherarges) = Canonical Server Team
(canonical-server)

** Changed in: whois (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Fixes issues using whois with .hr/.sx/.pe TLDs. In addition updates query
format for IPs when accessing ARIN.
+
+ [Development Fix]
+ These issues were fixed in 5.0.14 of whois.
+
+ [Stable Fix]
+ Since most of the fixes are covered in updating from 5.0.11 to 5.0.14, a
backport of these version provides all fixes.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1) whois google.hr (works on precise, not on oneiric)
+ 2) whois registry.sx google.com.pe
+ 3) whois 74.125.113.102
+    if we use this command in precise we see that whois adds n + to the
query, while
+    in oneiric it doesn't add that.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Most of the changes are fairly minimal, although any changes to mkpasswd
should be investigated.
+
  Problem Description:
  whois in oneiric can't query .hr/.sx/.pe TLDs. In addition the query format
for ARIN is different than in precise.

  Version affected:
  Current Oneiric Version: 5.0.11ubuntu2
-
- How to reproduce:
- 1) whois google.hr (works on precise, not on oneiric)
- 2) whois registry.sx google.com.pe
- 3) whois 74.125.113.102
-if we use this command in precise we see that whois adds n + to the
query, while
-in oneiric it doesn't add that.

2012-02-29 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks for submitting this bug report, and sorry you had trouble.

Looking at the /etc/default/sysstat in stock ubuntu, I don't see any
unterminated strings. A trial do-release-upgrade from oneiric to
precise, with sysstat installed, worked fine for me.

Had you edited the /etc/default/sysstat file at any point?
Unfortunately since you purged and re-installed, we can't look at the
old defaults file to see what the problem actually was. That makes this
problem unreproducible and un-debuggable, so per the status definitions
I will mark it invalid.

Thanks for submitting this bug. The upgrade log says there was no
output to show why slapd failed to start, but suggests looking at
/var/log/syslog. Could you look through that file to make sure there is
no sensitive information (like passwords) and then attach it here? You
can mark the bug 'private' if you want to keep others from seeing it
until we have a chance to look through it for sensitive information.

[Bug 829980] Re: upstart-udev-bridge eats 100% cpu calling dbus_message_iter_append_basic()

2012-02-29 Thread John
Hi, I've got the same problem on a Dell 2950 server - no batteries
installed save for those in the RAID cards, so it doesn't look to be
isolated to laptops. The machine in question worked fine until oneiric
install, and shows the problem after a variable amount of time, could be
minutes possibly hours/days

Going to try James' patch

[Bug 793437] Re: Unusable Slowness In 2.6.38-8

2012-02-29 Thread emuse
Hi,

Just to give an up, I'm not an ubuntu user, but have exactly the same
problem with an asus N51 core 2 duo and kernels = 2.6.38. I've been
following kernels up to 3.2.7 and the bug persists until now. I was
pleased to find the mentioned workaround here: going into standby mode
and back does restore normal CPU speed!

Also, turning off ACPI will work with normal CPU speed.

The slowdown appears at some rather late stage during bootup, bootup
speed with systemd is almost normal.

Thanks to the reporters

Frank

Without the driver the distro won't boot nor install, so that makes running

[Bug 937706] Re: Oneiric unpredictable crashes straight out to login screen

Hello Fabio,
Another crash this morning. I really cannot afford to keep losing work like
this  :-(
Unfortunately the crash happened before I had checked the debuggin options.
Would the report still be useful? Also, I ran xdiagnose and it said that it
might be sending sensitive information such as hostname so I'm not sure whether
to press the send button in Apport or not?
Thanks,

[Bug 943113] [NEW] Screen lock not working reliably

2012-02-29 Thread Mark_B
Public bug reported:

I'm using 11.10 with Unity. I have observed that lock screen does not
behave consistently after the machine has been idling for a while and
resuming from screen saving. Same applies to resuming from suspend.

Types of behavior is one of:
- From screen saver to login screen (expected, ~50%)
- From screen saver to desktop for a few secs (sometimes allowing interaction)
then login screen (not expected, ~30%)
- From screen saver to desktop without login (not expected, ~20%)

This has actually been reported by another user on ubuntuforums. I am
experiencing the exact same problem.

I am opening a bug since I really need a machine that locks reliably.

[Bug 940085] Re: 12.04, Compiz Wall plugin default shortcut keys are incorrect

2012-02-29 Thread psypher
FYI clicking the little restore to default icon next to the key combo in
CCSM sets it correctly back to the preferred default we all know and
love AND MISSED!

Trying to set the combo manually by doing key grabs does not work for
some reason. pressing ctrl is not registered in the capture at all, and
if you try and set it and close the app the combos don't work very well.
When i went back in again and restored the default my problem was fixed,
YAY!

[Bug 833383] Re: FFe: [MIR] gnome-contacts

2012-02-29 Thread Martin Pitt
When I looked at g-contacts closely before Oneiric's release, it did not
do anything empathy's contact list could not do, and it was very rough
still.

I installed 3.3.90, and I must say I'm shocked how poorly designed this
program is. When you start it the first time, you get a totally
unintelligible setup screen with two unobvious choices where to keep
your contacts, and two misplaced buttons which at first appear to be a
menu. (attaching screenshot).

The main window has a very poor layout, tons of empty entries, and it
does not show much information. (attaching screenshot).

Frankly, this is not an app I want to see in our default install.
Evolution has a much better UI to manage contacts.

If the new empathy needs this, I strongly suggest to keep the current
empathy version and backport some bug fixes, or revert the removal of
empathy's builtin contact list.
