[Bug 1131463] Re: php ldap 5.3 in ubuntu 12.04 LTS does not support pagination

2013-02-22 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for reporting this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Unfortunately, with few exceptions, we don't modify stable releases with
new features, including the LTS, since this position is exactly why
people use the LTS release.

 Ubuntu LTS 12.04.1 is still shipped with php 5.3 for back
compatibility reasons.

More for LTS reasons! PHP 5.4 is available in 12.10 onwards.

Please see the policy at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Users who want newer features should use a newer release, request and
use backports (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports) or use
their own PPAs.

Marking this bug as Invalid, since fulfilling this request would be a
direct violation of SRU policy. But I do encourage the author of the
backport to go ahead and publish a PPA with this feature added; this
kind of need is exactly the sort of purpose which the PPAs are designed
to fulfill.

[Bug 967410] Re: Windows clients cannot connect to shared printers

2013-02-22 Thread Louis Bouchard
One thing to be aware of that I noticed while testing.

Even with the patch applied, existing printers will not get updated
entries in the samba registry. I have found no other way than deleting
the registry file completely to get new entries created. I had to do the
following :

 $ sudo rm -f /var/lib/samba/registry.tdb
 $ sudo rm -f /var/cache/samba/printing/*
 $ sudo restart smbd
 $ sudo restart nmbd

Maybe there is a smarter way of cleaning it up but I haven't found it

[Bug 1074443] Re: Please upgrade ipmitool to 1.8.12 for 13.04

2013-02-22 Thread Kent Baxley
I've built 1.8.12 and have a copy of it for precise stored here:

https://launchpad.net/~kentb/+archive/ipmitool-latest

This is based on the released tarball from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ipmitool/files/ipmitool/1.8.12/ipmitool-1.8.12.tar.gz/download

It's been installed and tested on a PowerEdge T410 running 12.04.2. So
far the commands seem to be working fine.

There are, however, some additional features that may be required in
impitool that aren't in an official release yet. Many of those features
are listed here:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/AgentFreeManagement

For example, the ipmitool mc setsysinfo commands to publish OS
information to service processor aren't in the released version of the
code, but, they are in the cvs repository.Fedora 18 looks to have
already pulled this in:

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-02-22 Thread Chris Cormier
I've been able to confirm the same as the OP regarding the different
Ubuntu distrubutions as guests. These tests should help ruleout/pinpoint
the kernel and modules.

Using the same 12.04 hypervisors for all tests.

Testing different guests I was able to determine.
-Lucid with default kernel is NOT affected.
-Precise with default kernel is affected.

The test...
I tared up each guest kernels and dropped them into the oposing distribution.

Results
-Lucid with Precise Kernel is NOT affected.
-Precise with Lucid Kernel is affected.

Conclusion
12.04 Precise distribution guest is affected regardless of the kernel used.

[Bug 1100843] Re: Live Migration Causes Performance Issues

2013-02-22 Thread Mark Petersen
@ccormier

I've thought all along it might be a libc issue but testing libc 2.13 on
precise would be rather difficult. To some extent I feel like this
rules out the kernel as an issue though, since the same kernel on
precise/lucid yield different results.

Have you tried letting a precise VM idle without a livemigration to see
if performance degrades? If not perhaps you could leave one idle over
the weekend and performance test on Monday?

I assume you're testing with qemu-kvm 1.0.0?  I've been testing with
qemu-kvm 1.2.0 as the performance is remarkably better for me. This
would seem to indicate it's not qemu-kvm at fault either.

[Bug 1131828] Re: apache2.2 init.d script gives error due to msising double quotes

2013-02-22 Thread Bryan Fullerton
Just to confirm, this would change the script so instead of printing a
syntax error it would instead print No Apache MPM package installed
and exit 0 (see lines 56 and 57).

This is probably preferable to printing unclear errors and continuing on
with the script, but if your requirement is to actually start Apache
using a multi-word APACHE_HTTPD then a more complex solution is
required.

[Bug 1119842] Re: [ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. G75VX] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2013-02-22 Thread Bernardo Reino
@gabriel-thornblad,

Just a quick/wild guess: have you installed the cgroup-bin package?

Reason for asking is: in your modules list I see kvm/kvm_intel and
various vbox* modules, so there's a chance that you've also installed
cgroup-bin as a dependency of libvirt.

Now, if that is the case, have a look at bugs #693594 and #858102.
Package cgroup-bin, in its default configuration, is so badly broken
that it, among other kernel-breaking measures, prevents suspend/resume
and even correct shutdown.

If so, replace it with cgroup-lite.

If you don't have cgroup-bin then it must be something else (obviously
:).

[Bug 1131614] [NEW] libllvm3.2 3.2-2ubuntu3 upgrade (r600-snapshot.diff) breaks ABI, makes clang emit crashing code

2013-02-22 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Public bug reported:

The libllvm3.2 3.2-2ubuntu2 → 3.2-2ubuntu3 upgrade, which added
r600-snapshot.diff, has broken the ABI in such a way that clang now
emits code that crashes at runtime!

$ cat catch.cc
struct E {};
int main()
{
try {
throw E();
} catch (E e) {
}
return 0;
}
$ clang++ catch.cc -o catch
$ ./catch
$ sudo aptitude upgrade libllvm3.2
…
Preparing to replace libllvm3.2:amd64 3.2-2ubuntu2 (using
.../libllvm3.2_3.2-2ubuntu3_amd64.deb) ...
…
$ clang++ catch.cc -o catch
$ ./catch
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Comparing the generated LLVM source, the difference is that a call to
llvm.eh.typeid.for has been replaced with a bogus call to
llvm.eh.sjlj.setjmp. The problem, I think, is that the patch has
inserted an entry for llvm.ceil into the alphabetized enums and arrays
in /usr/include/llvm-3.2/llvm/Intrinsics.gen, so that the numerical
index that previously referred to llvm.eh.typeid.for now refers to the
previous entry llvm.eh.sjlj.setjmp. The patch also inserts many other
entries later in the alphabet, and who knows what effect that will have
on clang and other programs.

ABI breaks need to be accompanied with a corresponding soname bump.

[Bug 1130501] [NEW] Spanish; Castilian (Puerto Rico) and Spanish; Castilian (United States) Regional Formats use 24-hour format by default

2013-02-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The default format for the clock in the Spanish; Castilian (Puerto Rico)
and Spanish; Castilian (United States) Regional Formats (selected in
Language Support) is the 24-hour format (displays 13:30 rather than
1:30 PM). These countries use the 12-hour format, so this default
setting is incorrect. While you can change the clock format in the Date
and Time Settings regardless of the current Regional Format, the clock
in the Login Screen, the Guest Session, and any newly made User Account
will use the default clock format (which is the 24-hour format in this
case). In addition, I think it's worth mentioning that Valve's Steam
gaming software is affected by this issue. Steam uses an In-Game
Overlay that can display the current time to the user while playing a
game. However, this Overlay clock uses the default clock format (again,
this being the 24-hour format), even if the clock format for the current
user is set to the 12-hour format.

[Bug 980727] Re: Cannot connect to certain websites through a roline(rotronic) router

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  I have a toshiba laptop from about 2008 connected through cable to a
  roline rotronic router. The router is connected to the isp through
  pppoe.

  2 days after booting I cannot connect to google.com or any sites related
  to google.com such as youtube or sites that use google-analytics. It
  either times out or it finally connects after about 5 minutes in
  waiting.

  I have tried using firefox, opera, chromium, lynx, wget everything. Ping
  works and it's not a DNS problem since I tried the google 8.8.8.8,
  8.8.4.4 addresses and it doesn't help in any way.

  I tried restarting the router. Nothing. Modified the mt from 1500 to
  1492 like on the pppoe on the router. Nothing. Tried 1464. Now no sites
  work. Back on 1492, everything works except google.

  I install wireshark and see that when I wait for google to load I get a
  lot of TCP previous segment lost errors to google ip. The dns keeps
  trying different google servers with different ips but all have the same
  problem: TCP previous segment lost. After a few minutes it either times
  out or it finds a server that responds. But if I try again then I have
  to wait another 5 minutes.

  Using windows both xp and 7 doesn't exhibit the problem. Other windows
  machines on the network don't exhibit the issue. I closed all other
  machines so that I am alone connected to the router. Nothing. After a
  few hours it might start working again all by itself and after another
  couple of days it starts having the problem again.

  I reinstalled the system from scratch. Formatted even the home partition

+ hoping it was some configuration file. Still can't connect.

  Using startpage.com instead of google.com or google.ro (I am from
  Romania) works.

  I had the system working for months when I installed some updates
  including a kernel update a couple of months ago. From then on ubuntu
  11.10 started exhibiting this problem. I do not remember what kernel
  version it was but I updated to 3.2 I think after I tried the precise
  pangolin beta and it still exhibited the issue.

  I have tested with the current mainline kernel(linux-
  image-3.4.0-999-generic_3.4.0-999.201204260409_amd64.deb) in precise
  pangolin, same problem.

  WORKAROUND: I got rid of the router and connected directly to internet
  using pppoe configuration from ubuntu. Guess what now google and
  everything else works.

  WORKAROUND: Rebooting the system works for 2 days.

[Bug 734398] Re: Ubuntu flash audio delay

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill

  Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

  Audio in certain flash applications is delayed by about a second. For example
try this:
  http://www.najle.com/idaft/idaft/
  On Windows: no delay between interaction and audio playback.

  Googling for Ubuntu flash audio delay brings up a ton of forum threads

  I tried fiddeling with the pulseaudio settings manually to maybe

[Bug 94047] Re: Amarok intermittently gives the error no suitable demux plugin found when trying to play remote streams/files

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: amarok

  Trying to play remotely stored music files (e.g. mp3) or radio streams
  sometimes gives an error pop-up that no suitable demux plugin was found.

-
  To reproduce:
  Double click on one of my radio streams and sometimes it will play OK, other
times it will give me an error. If it gives an error I just keep trying to play
different radio streams until it starts working again - then the original will
work again.

+ As stated it is intermittent and annoying! It also happens when trying
+ to play music over samba shares. Could it be a problem with the KIO
+ slaves?

[Bug 107719] Re: When firefox is downloading a file, crashes and restarts the session, it deletes the previously downloaded file

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox

  I must say that this has been really annoying.

  I was downloading a large file (the Feisty ISO, but that's not relevant)
  when firefox crashed because one of the Flash plugin bugs. I re-opened
  it, restored the session and the download manager trashed the data that
  I had already downloaded. It was 400 MB, an hour and a half
  downloading...

  The problem is that I was getting the file from a private mirror where I
  have to login in order to download anything. So, when firefox re-opened
  and tried to continue the download, it got a webpage saying permission
- denied and OVERWROTE the previous data, replacing it with the damn php
- file.
+ denied and OVERWROTE the previous data, replacing it with the php file.

  So, to sum up, the bug is the following: When firefox crashes, if it is
  trying to resume a download, don't trash the downloaded data. If it
  can't resume for some reason (in this case, because it got a php file
  instead an ISO image), tell the user what to do, or make a backup of the
  current data and then restart the download.

this problem: 1) your configuration path file /etc/gconf/2/path doesn't contain
any databases or wasn't found 2) somehow we mistakenly created two gconfd
processes 3) your operating system is misconfigured so NFS file locking doesn't
work in your home directory or 4) your NFS client machine crashed and didn't
properly notify the server on reboot that file locks should be dropped. If you
have two gconfd processes (or had two at the time the second was launched),
logging out, killing all copies of gconfd, and logging back in may help. If you
have stale locks, remove ~/.gconf*/*lock. Perhaps the problem is that you
attempted to use GConf from two machines at once, and ORBit still has its
default configuration that prevents remote CORBA connections - put
ORBIIOPIPv4=1 in /etc/orbitrc. As always, check the user.* syslog for details
on problems gconfd encountered. There can only be one gconfd per home
directory, and it must own a lockfile in ~/.gconfd and also lockfiles in
individual storage locations such as ~/.gconf

this problem: 1) your configuration path file /etc/gconf/2/path doesn't contain
any databases or wasn't found 2) somehow we mistakenly created two gconfd
processes 3) your operating system is misconfigured so NFS file locking doesn't
work in your home directory or 4) your NFS client machine crashed and didn't
properly notify the server on reboot that file locks should be dropped. If you
have two gconfd processes (or had two at the time the second was launched),
logging out, killing all copies of gconfd, and logging back in may help. If you
have stale locks, remove ~/.gconf*/*lock.

[Bug 831022] Re: avahi daemon erroneously assumes host name conflicts (and causes more trouble then)

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Hi,

  i am running the server edition of Ubuntu LTS on a HP Proliant server.
  That avahi daemon is driving me crazy.

  The server is named Server1 , retrieves it's IP address pseudostatically
  from a DHCP server, and announces several of its services through avahi
  (e.g. offering print services to iPads, that's why Avahi is needed).

  every now and then (not always) avahi daemon claims to have detected a
  name collision at boot time. It then logs

  Aug 22 13:09:40 Server1 avahi-daemon[1520]: Host name conflict, retrying
  with Server1-2

  and uses Server1-2 as it's name, causing even the DHCP-Server to apply
  with a different host name, thus causing a new IP address to be
- assigned. This damned avahi daemon is breaking my network structure and
- does not even tell in the logs, where the conflict came from or what
- made the daemon believe that there was a conflict.

[Bug 883673] Re: X started by lightdm renders X11 screen ugly/unusable

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Hi,

  after upgrading my system to oneiric, the X11 desktop is ugly and almost
  unusable, because the fonts and characters are stretched horizontally
  and blurred.

  I guess that the reason is a wrong/odd dpi value, because xdpyinfo says

  screen #0:
-   dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (473x302 millimeters)
-   resolution:86x101 dots per inch
+   dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (473x302 millimeters)
+   resolution:86x101 dots per inch

-
- I would prefer to simply give X a better dpi value as a command line
argument, but as far as I can see that damned lightdm does not allow to
configure any command line parameters for X (which I consider as broken design).

[Bug 1026575] Re: indicator-weather leaves entries in gnome-session after removal

2013-02-22 Thread UbuntuFan-Albert
I have the same problem on my system (Ubuntu 12.10) after having removed
the indicator-weather applet.

In my ~/.config/autostart directory there is a symbolic link named
   indicator-weather.desktop
which is broken (because the applet was removed).

Deleting this file will most likely avoid getting the warning again.
I'll try.

2013-02-22 Thread Alexander Adam
That could even be security relevant if I am not paying attention wether the
bug appears or not:
If I type and bug appears (in my case on gnome 3) the gnome shell search field
gets the focus.
So every character I type after the focus change appears clearly visible for
every person sitting around me (or following vnc stream etc).
Typing the passphrase of an super user in a clear text field is definitely
something which is somehow relevant (at least in my opinion).

[Bug 327258] Re: Streamline interface

2013-02-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
As shown in http://mterry.name/log/2013/01/22/software-updater-changes-
in-ubuntu-13-04/, the interface has been streamlined, but not in the
way you described. There is no longer a Check button or a Close
button. There is no room for Details of updates to go alongside
Remind Me Later and Install Now, because there's a Settings...
button in the way.

[Bug 1092910] Re: Merge notifications of two incoming messages from the same person

2013-02-22 Thread Aurélien Gâteau
The FDO spec does not explicitly support merging. What happens is
notify-osd remembers the last notification and merges the new one in it
if it satisfies a set of rules mentioned here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotifyOSD#Merging_notifications

One of those rules is that the application must set a particular hint in the
notification. Quoting notify-osd page:

If the hint “x-canonical-append” is supplied with a string value “allowed”, and
replaces_id is not specified, the bubble should be treated as if it allows
merging.

KNotification API does not let the application pass custom hints, so it
is impossible for any application using this API to support merging
notifications. It could be possible to fix this by doing one of those:

1. Remove the need for the x-canonical-append hint in notify-osd.

2. Modify knotify (the daemon handling notifications behind
KNotification) to always pass the x-canonical-append hint.

3. Extend KNotification and knotify to allow applications to pass
arbitrary hints *and* patch applications to pass the x-canonical-
append hint.

Of those three, 1. seems doable, 2 and 3 are unlikely to happen.

Hey Gunnar,

 Personally I wouldn't mind to drop the md5sum check/deletion part. One
 reason I didn't (so far) was out of respect for possible Debian and

 the disable line doesn't violate any policies more than deleting a file
 in another package. Maybe less.

 I'm also disinclined to differ from the Debian version more than
 necessary, so I'd prefer a consensus before proposing that change.
 Hopefully we'll end up with an im-config package that is identical with
 the Debian one - it's a 3.0 (native) package. On that topic version 0.20
 has been released at Debian.

Yes - all of these problems exist on Debian too, although they way they
might be addressed there could be different I suppose. The basic issues
are the same though.

 A while ago Osamu mentioned an idea to apply patches conditionally...

 As regards updating im-switch... Added an im-switch task as a reminder.
 OTOH, I know that Aron and Osamu consider im-switch to be 'dead' and a
 candidate for archive removal. In the light of that, is it really worth
 it to spend time with SRUing that change?

I think so - it should just be a simple change to the config file (and
my offer to sponsor still stands), so not a very difficult change to
SRU. It may be dead (and should therefore be removed from Raring after
switching Kubuntu over), but we do have it in stable releases still. IMO
the fix to im-config should be considered as a fallback if the user
didn't fully update before moving to raring.

Cheers,
