[Bug 1634572] Re: APCUPSD does not send killpower command to UPS (only happens on Ubuntu 16.04)

2016-11-11 Thread JanCeuleers
According to discussion on the apcupsd-users mailing list [1] this issue
is OS-specific rather than being a problem in upstream apcupsd.

Specifically it is believed that this issue is due to Ubuntu shutting
down USB before the killpower command is issued to the UPS, which which
it is no longer possible to communicate without USB.

[Bug 1631600] Re: window contents scaling option per-display

2016-11-11 Thread Michael
At the moment I bypass it by scaling (increasing) the resolution of the
output device via "xrandr". This works fine, but it costs more
performance and is not persistent at the cost of running a script after
each login.

So if X does not support the window scaling (and probably never will),
then the control panel could support resolution upscaling.

By the way: The unity control panel does not support scaled output
devices. It displays in the display position view the real output
resolution, but not the scaled one.

filter down from the latest kernels into the stable kernel series, and

[Bug 1637157] Re: App geometry cache gets corrupted

2016-11-11 Thread Kugi Eusebio
So last night I wasn't able to reproduce it again but today fresh from a
boot, I encountered it again with Ubuntu Silo Installer, WifiTransfer
and Talaan. Not sure what's common with them but other core apps doesn't
have this problem. The issue persist until you actually resize the app
then subsequent opening will have their last window size.

Deleting the said file solved the problem but not until I rebooted.
But it seems to me that the issue comes back eventually. Let's see.
I'll update here when I encounter it again.

Same problem in Xenial 16.04, running kernel 4.4.0-47 and also upstream

problems, but when I suspend and restart, the guest session demands a
password. Trying to switch users back into guest opens a new instance

[Bug 1641264] [NEW] libreoffice crashes on startup when using OpenGL rendering and proprietary nvidia driver.

Public bug reported:

I noticed that Libreoffice was rendering very slow (I can see each menu
option drawn) so I tried using OpenGL rendering, which causes
libreoffice to crash immediately on start-up.

I confirm that OpenGL is working fine:

$ glxinfo | head
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4

I'm able to use glxgears and other apps like djv_view with fast
rendering.

I've attached the gdb trace resulting from the crash with debug symbols,
following is an except:

Not conflicting pepperflashplugin-nonfree is intentional. When we added
the PPAPI plugin to adobe-flashplugin, an additional conflict would have
prevented update-manager from updating the package for people who
already had pepperflashplugin-nonfree installed.

Regards
- Chris

Since it can't be done easily, I guess we have to live with this
inconvenience. I've closed the adobe-flashplugin and pepperflashplugin-
nonfree tasks.

As regards which package browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash
recommends, it's about to be fixed via bug #1633678. Marking this bug as
a duplicate.

As regards the future of pepperflashplugin-nonfree, we don't need it in
Ubuntu any longer since we have adobe-flashplugin. While a fixed version
of it will keep being needed for other Debian distros, a reasonable
measure would probably be to drop it from the Ubuntu archive in 17.04.
But that part of the discussion may better be held on bug #1632870.

[Bug 1628285] Re: apparmor should be allowed to start in containers

2016-11-11 Thread Tyler Hicks

overall confinement profile while still allowing individual processes inside of
the container to have individual confinement profiles. This bug is for the
apparmor and upstart userspace changes needed to allow the container init to
load apparmor profiles during the container boot procedure.

+ Verify that the container's dhclient is confined inside of an AppArmor

+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The regression potential is relatively high because processes inside of
Ubuntu containers can be confined with an additional profile that is loaded
inside of the container. This feature was released in Ubuntu 16.10 and 16.04
with no known serious issues so far.
+
+ IMPORTANT: There is a known regression that may be seen by users of `lxc
exec`. See bug #1641243 for details. Bug #1640868 is pre-existing, doesn't seem
to have any negative side-effects, and is not caused by this SRU.

  [Impact]
The kernel in xenial-proposed (4.4.0-46.67) and the lxd that has recently
migrated from xenial-proposed (2.0.5-0ubuntu1~ubuntu16.04.1) allows us to
enable stacked/namespaced AppArmor policy for lxd containers. This means that
the container can have an overall confinement profile while still allowing
individual processes inside of the container to have individual confinement
profiles. This bug is for the apparmor userspace changes needed to allow the
container init to load apparmor profiles during the container boot procedure.

  [Test Case]
Install the kernel from xenial-proposed (4.4.0-46.67). Reboot into the new
kernel and set up a new xenial lxd container (MUST be an unprivileged
container):

   $ lxc start ubuntu:16.04 x

Install apparmor from xenial-proposed (2.10.95-0ubuntu2.5) inside of the
  container and reboot the container.

Verify that the container's dhclient is confined inside of an AppArmor
namespace with a stacked profile that was loaded inside of the
  container:

  $ ps auxZ | grep
'^lxd-x_//&:lxd-x_:///sbin/dhclient'

/run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.eth0.leases -I -df
/var/lib/dhcp/dhclient6.eth0.leases eth0

  [Regression Potential]
The regression potential is relatively high because processes inside of
Ubuntu containers can be confined with an additional profile that is loaded
inside of the container. However, this feature was released in Ubuntu 16.10
with no known issues so far.

- [Original Description]
+ =Original Description=

Now that we have support for apparmor namespacing and stacking,
unprivileged containers can and should be allowed to load apparmor
  profiles.

The following changes are needed at least:
   - Change the systemd unit to remove the "!container" condition
   - Change the apparmor init script, replacing the current simple container
check for something along the lines of:
  - If /proc/self/attr/current says "unconfined"
  - And /sys/kernel/security/apparmor/features/domain/stack contains "yes"
  - And /sys/kernel/security/apparmor/features/domain/version is 1.2 or
higher
  - Then continue execing the script, otherwise exit 0

John suggested he could add a file which would provide a more reliable
way to do this check ^

In either case, we need this change so that containers can behave more
like normal systems as far as apparmor is concerned. That change should
also be SRUed back to Xenial at the same time the kernel support for
  stacking is pushed.

This bug is effectively a blocker for snapd inside LXD as without this,
snap-confine and snapd itself will not be confined after container
  restart.

[Bug 1641244] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 suspend works only twice or thrice in a row

2016-11-11 Thread Marek Stasiak
** Description changed:

  This problem was introduced with Ubuntu 16.04 or rather with kernel 4.4;
I never had this problem on Ubuntu 14.04 and kernels from 3.x line.

Suspend works only twice in a row, sometimes three times, the next
attempt of suspending results in basically dead machine but system fans
are spinning, monitor back light is on etc. My problem is similar to
#1634446, #1566302, #1574125, symptoms are basically the same.

I tried more recent kernels: 4.6, 4.8, but its all the same. The problem
existed after upgrading my system from 14.04 to 16.04 and after fresh
installation of 16.04. If I recall correctly the problem existed with
- proprietary graphic drivers (nvidia-367 for my GTX770) and for default
- open source graphic drivers. I have an encrypted home partition, 8GB or
- RAM and 16GB swap partition.

I also cannot log on since the update to 304.132.
Ubuntu 14.04
Geforce 9100

Right now I am using the nouveau driver but it is not a satisfactory
solution. I have two monitors and with the nouveau driver one runs at a
much lower resolution that the other. With the 304.131 driver this was
not the case. Having struggled to get a system that works I am hesitant
to try the workaround in comment #20

[Bug 1641241] Re: TensorFlow application crashes after glibc upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 version

2016-11-11 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From ha...@us.ibm.com 2016-11-11 18:14 EDT---
A few notes on the debug effort since the previous update:

- We opened an issue with the TensorFlow project in github:
https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/issues/5482

- Crash occurs with any of TensorFlow 0.9, 0.10, and recent master
(e.g. 2cbb9b5 of Oct 26th)

- Crash occurs while training inception model on ILSVRC 2012 dataset. Model is
from: https://github.com/tensorflow/models.git inception/

- Crash is independent of CUDA / GPU; occurs even if we compile without CUDA
and GPU support

- Crash occurs after varying run times. Appears to occur sooner with higher
thread counts. Very possibly a race of some sort.

Our team continues to try to isolate and simplify the problem. We'll try
buildling on a 14.04 system with AT 9. That setup uses GLIBC 2.22, and
so may allow us to narrow the problem to either 2.21 -> 2.22 or 2.22 -> 2.23.

Any debug advice or suggestions are appreciated.

[Bug 1641243] Re: Provide full AppArmor confinement for snaps on 14.04

2016-11-11 Thread Tyler Hicks
** Description changed:

  [Rationale]
For backporting snapd to 14.04 LTS, we need to provide proper AppArmor
confinement for snaps when running under the 16.04 hardware enablement kernel.
The apparmor userspace package in 14.04 is missing support key mediation
features such as UNIX domain socket rules, AppArmor policy namespaces, and
AppArmor profile stacking. UNIX domain socket mediation is needed by nearly all
snaps. AppArmor policy namespaces and profile stacking are needed by the lxd
snap.
+
+ Unfortunately, it was not feasible to backport the individual features
+ to the 14.04 apparmor package as they're quite complex and have a large
+ number of dependency patches. Additionally, the AppArmor policy
+ abstractions from Ubuntu 16.04 are needed to provide proper snap
+ confinement. Because of these two reasons, the decision to bring 16.04's
+ apparmor package to 14.04 was (very carefully) made.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/AppArmor
+
+ This update will go through the Test Plan as well as manual testing to
+ verify that snap confinement on 14.04 does work. Manual tests include
+ installing snapd in 14.04 and running simple snaps such as pwgen-tyhicks
+ and hello-world, as well as a much more complex snap such as lxd.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ High. We must be extremely careful to not regress existing, confined
applications in Ubuntu 14.04. We are lucky that the upstream AppArmor project
has extensive regression tests and that the Ubuntu Security team adds even more
testing via the AppArmor Test Plan.
+
+ Care was taken to minimally change how the AppArmor policies are loaded
+ during the boot process. I also verified that the abstractions shipped
+ in apparmor and the profiles shipped in apparmor-profiles are the same
+ across this SRU update. Additionally, I've ran the following regression
+ tests from lp:qa-regression-testing (these packages ship an AppArmor
+ profile):
+
+ test-apache2-mpm-event.py
+ test-apache2-mpm-itk.py
+ test-apache2-mpm-perchild.py
+ test-apache2-mpm-prefork.py
+ test-apache2-mpm-worker.py
+ test-bind9.py
+ test-clamav.py
+ test-cups.py
+ test-dhcp.py
+ test-mysql.py
+ test-ntp.py
+ test-openldap.py
+ test-rsyslog.py
+ test-squid.py
+ test-tcpdump.py

[Bug 1640518] Re: MongoDB Memory corruption

2016-11-11 Thread Aaron Sawdey
This is the other thing I am trying. I've modified the Canary object to
use a 128k stack zone and then use mprotect to mark the aligned 64k page
that's in the middle of it read-only. When the destructor is called, it
changes it back to read-write. This should cause any write to this
region to get a segv, and give us an idea of what is writing on the
stack in the resulting coredump.

** Patch added: "Canary that uses mprotect() to mark a page read-only."

One other thing, if you use the mprotect thing, it may be necessary to
bump up the value of /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count, depending on how many
of these Canary objects get constructed.

[Bug 1640518] Re: MongoDB Memory corruption

2016-11-11 Thread Andrew Morrow
Adam I agree on all points.

So far, my repro running with the LD_PRELOAD hack is at 118 iterations
with no crashes and going strong. Given that we had an ~5% repro rate
without the LD_PRELOAD hack, this is looking very encouraging, but I'm
going to let it run all weekend just to be sure.

As for skylake, we are definitely going to work on tracking one down
next week.

And of course, our default stance has always been that it is more likely
our bug than anything else, but you never know! We will continue to run
experiments and gather data.

Thanks again for your help.

[Bug 1641244] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.04 suspend works only twice or thrice in a row

2016-11-11 Thread Marek Stasiak
Public bug reported:

This problem was introduced with Ubuntu 16.04 or rather with kernel 4.4;

If I recall correctly the problem existed with
proprietary graphic drivers (nvidia-367 for my GTX770) and for default
open source graphic drivers. I have an encrypted home partition, 8GB or
RAM and 16GB swap partition.

I'll try to provide every information needed
