[Bug 1725190] Re: Please update modemmanager in xenial to the 1.6 series

2017-12-07 Thread Alex Tu
not experienced modemmanager-qt while backporting qmi over mbim for xenial
before. (LP: #1693756)
btw, I also tried just adding zesty ppa in xenial to install
modem-manager/libqmi/libmbim, it also works well with DW5811 and DW5816.

And it seems only one package for modemmanager-qt called "modemmanager-qt-dev":
modemmanager-qt-dev - Qt wrapper for ModemManager - devel files

So, we might need to check what the error message for ABI-check tests to
understand how is the impaction.

[Bug 1722109] Re: iwlwifi regression in artful - intermittent total packet loss

2017-12-07 Thread Bryan Petty
I upgraded my Dell 5520 laptop from Zesty to Artful over a month ago
now, and I'm seeing behavior pretty much exactly as described by Max,
starting immediately after the upgrade. I've been stuck either plugging
into my wired ethernet adapter, tethering with my phone, or just living
without connectivity because the wifi connection has been so unreliable.
Sometimes (frequently right after a clean boot) it works just fine, and
I'm having no problems meeting sustained, reliable, fast speeds for
maybe a minute, but it breaks down pretty quickly (sometimes even just
after just 10 to 15 seconds after wifi connects), and I see nothing but
long windows of 100% packet loss. If I monitor long enough, it seems to
recover for a brief window of time, but pretty quickly goes right back
to 100% packet loss (in windows of maybe 30 seconds to a few minutes).

This has been observed even today with the latest 4.13.0-19-generic
kernel.

For the first week or two after the upgrade, I've been trying to
determine if it was just limited to specific access points I was using,
but I've observed this same behavior while connected to 3 different
locations, with 3 wildly different wifi systems.

I also thought it might be the wifi adapter drivers in a kernel upgrade
(this laptop has a builtin Intel Wireless 8265 card, using iwlwifi), so
I picked up an Archer T4UH V2 (based on the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset)
just in case using a different wifi driver would be enough to have
working wifi again, but I'm seeing the same behavior with that adapter
as well.

So it certainly seems related to wifi functionality only, but also not
driver specific.

[Bug 1737106] [NEW] attempt to read or write outside of disk

2017-12-07 Thread BavarianPH
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 17.10 newest kernel
I can no longer access Ubuntu.
it ALWAYS goes to outside of disk.
I am dual booting with Windows 10
Windows 10 is first to boot,
I select Ubuntu or Advanced section to boot Ubuntu.
Have you considered an option of Windows or Ubuntu: choose, instead of making
one or the other the default?
I am so fed up with Ubuntu 17.10, that I may just give up using it ever again!
The new Dock features are a disaster. They crash Ubuntu.
I use cairo-dock, a much superior and far more adaptable dock than anything
gnome can
come up with.
Every Ubuntu version you remove the users ability to repair Ubuntu without
reinstalling it.
fsck is now a nightmare to use.
Nautilus is without a doubt the worst file explorer / manager ever created.
Nemo is far superior!
Synaptic is far superior to Software Install!
And after all this time you still have not automated the basic programs, one
still has to use the terminal like back in 1970!
17.10 is also unstable, it will all of the sudden go back to log in page for no
reason.
I report Ubuntu 17.10 basic system as a bug!!!
Also Ubuntu is not hacker proof, newly installed Ubuntu has no real security
ready, not even a firewall is activated!
Ubuntu and Linux have given the hackers all the tools they want to hack Ubuntu
easier than Windows!

[Bug 1735976] Re: Problem with secondary monitor and DVD player

2017-12-07 Thread Ilan Tal
I remove my objections to the boot routine. It was a hardware problem.
This morning things were so bad that I decided to switch monitors.
I unplugged the VGA connectors from both monitors, and swapped them.
The "new" configuration was much better, with no turning off of the monitor.
The next step was to switch back. Again all was well.
Conclusion: a hardware problem, probably one of the pins in the VGA connector
was intermittent.

It just happened that the problem started when I upgraded to 17.10.
I am happy that I can rely on Ubuntu as I have relied on it for years.
Sometimes it is hardware, and not software

[Bug 1735998] Re: Decouple unity related settings as unity-settings

2017-12-07 Thread Khurshid Alam
@Jeremy

>Why do you think you need to take those settings out of ubuntu-
settings?

1) We can ship all sorts unity specific overrides in unity-settings.
It's cleaner that way.

2) We want to ship per-desktop override of ".desktop" (ex: Gnome-
software) on "/usr/share/unity/applications". Rather patching each app
individually we could do that in unity-settings. That's what ubuntu-mate
does in ubuntu-mate-settings.

3) Not every gnome app will work well with unity. If we want to use a
alternative we need to override mimeapps list in
"/usr/share/applications/unity-mimeapps.list". We can easily do that in
unity-settings.

4) The idea is to have a separate ubuntu-unity-amd64.iso. But in the
default iso, both autologin and user-session names set to "ubuntu". If
we want to change that to "unity", we could do that by shipping a
override in "/usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/51-autologin.conf".
unity-settings seems proper place to do that. Other option is to carry
similar settings in lightdm.

5) In future you may want to demote all unity related components/bits to
universe. For that you need to decouple unity-session from gnome-session
and a separate unity-settings.

[Bug 1725848] Re: libstdc++-5-dev:amd64 5.5.0-1ubuntu1 configured without _GLIBCXX_USE_C99

2017-12-07 Thread Richard Huber
This is a big problem for the community because NVCC from NVidia for
Cuda 8 only works with Gcc-5. Probably why there is so much traffic on
this issue right now. Nothing works with Cuda on GCC-5 with 17.10,
which affects a ton of users.

This also affects the Shotcut snap. *Might* also be why the blender-tpaw

1b. Plug it in, and post the results uncompressed when executing via a
terminal:
usb-devices
2) Could you please provide the xev log you produced as per the Bug Description?

[Bug 1736994] Re: [needs-packaging] [MOTU] Have ubuntu-unity-desktop meta package in universe

2017-12-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
I'm not planning on uploading this; this is just a passing comment.

You need to have an actual seed repository which is used to generate the
list of dependencies in your metapackage when you run ./update from your
metapackge

You don't need to be an official flavor to have that repository. For
instance, here is Ubuntu Budgie's:

https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntubudgie-dev/ubuntu-seeds/ubuntu-
budgie.bionic

But we have per-session overrides now so it's fine to have overrides for
other desktops in ubuntu-settings.

Why do you think you need to take those settings out of ubuntu-settings?

[Bug 1737087] [NEW] general protection in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.1

2017-12-07 Thread David R. Hedges
Public bug reported:

Shortly (<=10s) after connecting my [Android] phone via USB, and
attempting to type in Thunderbird, my screen froze for roughly two
minutes (no input apparently accepted or display updates), and then
kicked me out to log in to a new session. (I was also able to ssh into
the system while the UI was hung.) The general protection error appeared
in dmesg and syslog at [apparently] the time of the UI lock-up.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please execute the following command only once, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 1737083

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Hi Seb,

here is the ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity7maintainers/unity7-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-unity-desktop

at https://launchpad.net/~unity7maintainers

"seb:

ubuntu-unity-desktop is a new package from what I can see and should go
to universe if uploaded to the ubuntu archive but ubuntu-settings is a
package in main used by Ubuntu Desktop so it's going to stay there ...
why would you like to move it to universe exactly?"

Hi,

Where is this discussion going on? On #ubuntu-desktop ? It would be
better if I can join the discussion directly.

We need two packages in the universe:

A) ''ubuntu-unity-desktop". This is the meta package required a fully
functional unity-desktop.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/1736994

B) unity-settings. There is no "ubuntu-settings". There is only unity-
settings which I decoupled from ubuntu-settings. See this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-settings/+bug/1735998

ubuntu-settings stays in main. We have nothing to do with it. Once
unity-settings move into universe I open a merge-request to drop unity
related code from ubuntu-settings.

Let me know if anything else is required.

Thanks.

Hey Dale,

Hi Will,

Again .. here are the packages:

ubuntu-unity-desktop

from the ppa

Since I'm missing some context could you tell me the "what" there? Those
packages need...(I'm going to guess "sponsoring", but if that's the case did
you go through the normal process/ubuntu-sponsors)?
Also what ppa are we talking about?

"But I am talking about ubuntu-unity-desktop and ubuntu-settings package
from ppa. How can we move those to universe? Usually we need to go
through MOTU where we need to find a member of Motu who can upload to
archive, but in this case can we ping Martin? He can review it and has
upload access to archive."

ubuntu-unity-desktop is a new package from what I can see and should go
to universe if uploaded to the ubuntu archive but ubuntu-settings is a
package in main used by Ubuntu Desktop so it's going to stay there ...
why would you like to move it to universe exactly?

Cheers,

Hi Dale,

Apologies for not replying sooner to this. I know you've put this on the
agenda for this week's Tech Board meeting, and I'm only now posting my
follow-up questions, which will give you practically no time to collect
answers. Still, I'm posting here so that we have a record of the questions,
and we can discuss further as necessary both during the IRC meeting and
afterwards.

This post did see some discussion during the previous TB meeting, and the
main concern raised is whether this project is sustainable. All of our
flavors have upstreams for their desktop components that have a demonstrated
track record of maintaining this software. We certainly cannot expect a
desktop such as Unity to continue to work without developers actively
working on the software.

Which source packages in the archive are you proposing that this package
will maintain as part of this flavor? Which source packages are you relying
on others to maintain?

Does your team have an existing track record of uploading to the Ubuntu
archive those packages that you will be maintaining? Which source packages,
and which members of your team? Are the members of your team who have done
these uploads committed to carrying this work forward? (To be specific: I
see several members on your team who are Canonical employees and may be
emotionally invested in the project, and have uploaded these packages in the
past when they were maintained by Canonical; but this does not necessarily
mean they are personally committed to shouldering this work going forward.)

Who on your team has upload rights to the packages in this set? Who are you
proposing should have upload rights?

Yes, can do. This way, the script will be available to anyone who
wants it. It doesn't sound like the euca2ools project any longer has
interest in producing mdoc man pages, but since it came up early in
my search for such a conversion tool, someone else looking for one may
find it there.

Many thanks for your diligence.

[Bug 363939] Re: Dialog is not resizeable and is modal. Both restrictions are useless and annoying.

2017-12-07 Thread oldspammer
Some errors for installation and startup have been eliminated--that's
great

But now warning / run time configuration errors diagnostic pop up dialog
box has a text area control in it that is one single line of displayable
text even when the message body actually contains 30+ lines of warnings
about repository entry troubles and whatnot.

My /etc/apt folder's list of repository sources seems to be getting
pretty huge, and some of the older values should have been either
commented out, updated to point to the old archived ubuntu versions or
deleted from that configuration file so that no accumulation of cruft /
wrong data / duplicate data causes any warning dialog box in the first
place.

But that dialog box when it does get displayed does not have a
scrollable multi-line text control to contain the error diagnostics of
multiple lines of display or whatever.

Here is something to use on Ubuntu 17.10 of 2017-12-07 in order to reproduced
the problem.
All I was doing was adding a package and at the end of the applied updates the
error dialog with all the warnings about the troubles in the configuration file
come up... If you copy/paste my version of sources.list into your system, run
synaptic package manager, then add, apply for a given selected package, the
error dialog box with the errant control should come up... Be sure to backup
your original copy before trying this out.

[Bug 1605189] Re: Authentication is required for suspending the system

2017-12-07 Thread chrisc1073
I have the same problem using XFCE on Ubuntu 17.10. But Markus's
solution does fix the problem.

My setup is as follows:

In XFCE Power Manager under the security tab set:
Automatically lock the session to "Never"

Uncheck "Lock the screen when the system is going for sleep".

Under the display tab I still blank the screen after 15 minutes. Put to
sleep and Switch off times appear to be disabled (greyed out).

Under the system tab I still have system sleep mode going to "Suspend" after an
hour.
Interestingly the screen still locks when it suspends.

So everything still works fine and as I want it to. I get a full screen
white on black message when I activate the machine again telling me the
screen is locked and to wait a few seconds for a dialog box to appear.
Haven't seen that before but fine nonetheless.

successfully. Sorry, I don't remember if I touched anything about

broken there in addition to 16.04.

I just tested with the daily image and it is still broken.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2017-12-07 Thread bodhi.zazen
Obviously Phillip you are shooting off your foul mouth without knowing a
dammed thing you are talking about. It is obvious from your comments you
know nothing about wayland or wayland security and that you are just
spewing shit on the bug report.

Wayland , upstream, does not and will not support running graphical
applications, as root, from the terminal using sudo , period, end of story.
There are other mechanisms to grant graphical applications root access, but
again the application itself is not going to run as root.

Perhaps you should read the documentation and security discussions before
you put your foot so far into your mouth it comes out your ass and back in
again.

https://lwn.net/Articles/589147/

http://www.mupuf.org/blog/2014/02/19/wayland-compositors-why-and-how-to-
handle/

https://lwn.net/Articles/517375/

And if you take your fat head out of your ass and look upstream you will
see every bug files against wayland regarding the problem of running
graphical applications with sudo has been closed as either not a bug or
wont fix.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99371

"Wayland dont support sudo users!"

Status :
RESOLVED
NOTOURBUG

The is not all in any way claiming you can not run graphical apps as root,
you just need to use another method.

And your comment has nothing to do with running graphical apps in X .

  Hello,

I am having issues with my touch pad. The touch pad in general works but it
will not allow me drag windows or highlight items as well as I cannot right
click. My Lenovo Ideapad320 is dual booted with Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS & I believe
my kernel version is 4.10.0-40-generic. Any ideas/suggestions? On the windows
side everything works fine. Also external mouse works fine.

[Bug 1583520] Re: Unable to convert to AAC using Ubuntu 16.04 / gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse not available

2017-12-07 Thread Benjamin Williams
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1299376 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1299376

This appears to be related to #1299376, marking as duplicate.

@kassoulet: I think that more recent versions of Ubuntu have newer
versions of the gstreamer-plugins-bad1.0 package, which include the
Fraunhofer FDK AAC encoding and decoding libraries libgstfdkaacenc.so
and libgstfdkaacdec.so. I'm not an expert on audio codecs, but I
believe the FDK AAC codec is thought to be superior to FAAC. Might it
be worth including FDK AAC as an available element in soundconverter
(perhaps after checking that a new enough version of GStreamer is in
use)?

2017-12-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Reuben Lifshay, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.

1) To clarify, did this problem not occur for you personally in a release prior
to 16.04?
2) To confirm this is fixed in Ubuntu, could you please test
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?

The tools that filed this bug believe there's something related to your

2017-12-07 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1737060] [NEW] Lenovo Ideapad320 Touchpad Right Click Not Working

2017-12-07 Thread matt
Public bug reported:

Thanxxx

Confirmed all 3 fixes:
 - Running with dir backend doesn't show a warning anymore
 - Running with zfs backend asks for the pool name, uses the right default
value and leads to a working pool
 - All runs now ask about network configuration

[Bug 1737053] [NEW] [MIR] brotli

2017-12-07 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

Availability

Built for all supported architectures. In sync with Debian.

Rationale
=
brotli is a file compression format and library developed and maintained by
Google. brotli is required by the WOFF 2.0 format for compressed web fonts.
brotli and woff2 are libraries that are technically already in main because
they are bundled in Firefox and webkit2gtk.

The next major stable release of webkit2gtk, 2.20, will be released in March.
It drops those 2 bundled libraries. I think our options are basically
1) Bundle those libraries anyway, or
2) Approve this MIR, or
3) Drop support for the WOFF2 format in webkit2gtk

Security

brotli is a security-sensitive library.

There is an open security bug for xenial that can be fixed by syncing
0.3.0+dfsg-3 from Debian.

https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/brotli
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brotli/+cve

Quality assurance
=
- Needs bug subscriber
- dh_auto_test runs upstream build tests. Test failure would fail the build.
- New autopkgtests pass on all arches:
http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages/b/brotli
https://ci.debian.net/packages/b/brotli/

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brotli
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=brotli
https://github.com/google/brotli/issues

Dependencies

No universe binary dependencies

Standards compliance

4.1.1, debhelper compat 10, dh7 simple rules

Maintenance
===
Actively maintained:
https://github.com/google/brotli

Not team maintained in Debian.
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/brotli

Other Info
==
webkit2gtk is managed similar to Firefox and Chromium. So far, new releases are
pushed to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and newer as security updates, but the Ubuntu
Security Team does not guarantee security support for webkit2gtk.

I'm waiting until woff2 is accepted into Debian and Ubuntu to file the
woff2 MIR. See https://bugs.debian.org/883828

We are going to need to backport brotli and woff2 into main as security
updates for 16.04 LTS and 17.10. The new version of brotli adds new
binary packages (in particular, the C library needed by woff2 and
webkit2gtk).

brotli has no reverse dependencies in 16.04 and 17.10. (fonttools is a
reverse-dependency in 18.04.)

brotli has a bizarre build system.
