[Bug 1876489] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks again. That one was only running for 15 seconds before the log
ended. I still can't see anything explaining it.

Were you able to log in before it happened or not? If not then maybe try
editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the line:

  #WaylandEnable=false

so it is:

  WaylandEnable=false

Then reboot.

It was flaky and now resolved in proposed migration.
But I'd want to understand why we fail 4/5 times.

So the debugging tests in the bileto ticket [1] will go on for a bit.

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-shell - 3.36.2-1ubuntu1

gnome-shell (3.36.2-1ubuntu1) groovy; urgency=medium

  * Merge with debian, including new upstream release (LP: #1877212)
  * debian/patches: Refresh
  * Remaining changes with debian:
- Replace gnome-backgrounds dep with ubuntu-wallpapers and Suggests
  gnome-themes-standard-data, gnome-backgrounds

  + xserver-xorg-legacy
+ yaru-theme-gnome-shell for the default ubuntu theming
- Update debian/gbp.conf with Ubuntu settings
- gnome-shell-common.prerm: Remove deprecated ubuntu theme alternative
- ubuntu/desktop_detect.patch:
+ add caching for desktop detection to avoid querying the current
desktop env variable as iterate through the list each time. For the
time of the Shell process, we can expect this env variable to stay
stable.
- ubuntu/smarter_alt_tab.patch:
+ quick alt-tab (without showing up the switcher) switch only between
the last window of the last 2 applications to be focused instead of
raising all windows of those apps.
- ubuntu/lightdm-user-switching.patch:
+ Allow user switching when using LightDM.
- ubuntu/lock_on_suspend.patch
  + Respect Ubuntu's lock-on-suspend setting.
- ubuntu/background_login.patch
+ Change default background color as we modified the default GDM color
for our ubuntu session.
- ubuntu/gdm_alternatives.patch
+ Add support for GDM3 theme alternatives
- optional-hot-corner.patch
+ enable patch proposed by upstream developer already in package (but
not in series) to add a settings for optional hot corner activation.
- main-show-an-error-message-on-gnome-shell-crash.patch,
  global-make-possible-to-set-debug-flags-dynamically.patch,
  main-increase-the-granularity-of-backtraces-in-SHELL_DEBU.patch,
  main-add-backtrace-crashes-all-and-backtrace-all.patch,
  sessionMode-add-support-for-debugFlags-parameter.patch:
+ Improve debug JS tracing for crash reports
- st-scroll-view-Handle-the-case-where-scrollbars-are-NULL.patch:
+ Fix crash on theme changes
- ubuntu/search-call-XUbuntuCancel-method-on-providers-when-no-dat.patch:
+ stop searches when requested from UI
- magnifier-Show-cursor-when-magnifier-is-enabled-and-scale.patch:
+ Show monitor scaled cursor when magnifier is enabled
- Break gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons (<< 19.01.3+git20190814)

gnome-shell (3.36.2-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Team upload
  * New upstream stable release
- Tone down weekend days with events in calendar
- Fix crash on physical keyboard detach
- Fix crash when creating a new workspace by dragging a favourite
  app icon
- Fix popup scaling in some HiDPI multi-monitor configurations
- Fix unintended focus delay after entering the wrong password
- Fix a crash when theming changes (LP: #1868440)
- When searching for system actions, find transliterated ASCII versions
- Ellipsize long "wrong password" messages
- Fix stuck lock screen when locked with a system-modal dialog open
- Don't apply updates on logout by default, since it isn't always
desirable (in particular on-battery status is not detected)
- Update translations: cs, pt_BR
  * d/rules: Drop -Wl,--as-needed.
It's the compiler default with bullseye toolchains.
  * d/watch: Only watch even-numbered (stable) branches

gnome-shell (3.36.1+git20200417-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Team upload

  [ Simon McVittie ]
  * New upstream snapshot from gnome-3-36 branch (3.36.1-37-g18a5c7436)
- Fix translated app folder names in overview (LP: #1872434)
- Fix misaligned spinner in lock screen
- Fix warning when a polkit dialog is reset
- Pluralize prompt correctly when asking whether to revert a display
  setup change
- Update Finnish translation
  * Bump build-dependency on libpulse-dev to 13.
Apparently stable's libpulse0 (in a partial upgrade) causes gnome-shell
to hang, so presumably we need this newer version for something.
(Closes: #958025)
  * Bump AT-SPI dependency to a contemporary version.
As with libpulse, there's anecdotal evidence that the version from
Debian 10 is too old to work in practice. (Closes: #958025)

  [ Laurent Bigonville ]
  * Move the D-Bus interfaces description files to the -common package.
This will make it easier to build some packages, like gnome-terminal,
that have a search provider

  [ Jeremy Bicha ]
  * Have gnome-shell-extension-prefs recommend chrome-gnome-shell
(LP: #1866841)

2020-05-06 Thread Dong Xuan Huy
@kristoo: You know, the fact is we usually use more than one monitor (built-in
monitor and external). Then we want only built-in monitor be scaled cause of
available of big size that external monitor have.
After all, this bug should be fixed ASAP!

2020-05-06 Thread Trebacz
Don't mean to whine but I'm on 19.10 - According to quora
https://www.quora.com/What-does-a-few-days-mean . 3-10 days after. It
seems to have been more than that (13 by my count). Some communication
would be awesome. Or maybe my install is just broken. Please don't
release to soon, but I'm also not seeing any significant public issues
mentioned.

[Bug 1877226] [NEW] nvidia - external display unavailable after screen goes to sleep

2020-05-06 Thread sucksatnetworking
Public bug reported:

On ubuntu 20.04 (Linux 5.4.0-29-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 29
14:32:27 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) with nvidia
proprietary driver 440.64 with an nvidia MX250 (Lenovo T590):

1) Attach monitor via HDMI

2) Monitor is properly detected. Gnome-control-center sees the correct
monitor and sets it to join displays. No issue

3) activate lock screen (window key + L)

4) wait for screens to go to sleep

5) wake up screens to login again (external monitor flashes briefly)

6) login

7) system no longer uses external display and returns to single display

8) open gnome-control-center -> displays. Single Display is active

9) Attempt to select join displays

10) Error at the top of gnome-control-center: Changes cannot be applied
- This could be due to hardware limitations

11) select mirror - click apply

12) a keep settings dialogue will pop-up briefly before the screen goes
blank. When the screen comes back on, both screens come back on, with a
new keep settings dialogue.

13) select keep settings. gnome-control-center now shows Joing Displays
as being active. not/not mirror.

Notes:
-changing prime-select to nvidia vs adaptive does not change the issue
-setting power profile to performance in nvidia-settings does not change the
issue

[Bug 1877225] Re: Clipgrap

2020-05-06 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1877225

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I don't see the package `clipgrap` though
(https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=all=names=Clipgrap)
so I'm marking this as Incomplete as well. If it was a typo, or I've
missed some important detail, please respond in comment and you can
change the status back to "New".

2020-05-06 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Bug 1877222] [NEW] Casper-rw Persistence files not working with 20.04

2020-05-06 Thread C.S.Cameron
Public bug reported:

I have just noticed that casper-rw persistent files are not working with
Ubuntu 20.04 when booted from an ISO file.

Persistent partitions are working, however persistent partitions do not
work with "persistent-path" and only one persistent partition is allowed
per USB disk.

This means that a multiboot, multipersistence USB drive is no longer
possible using ISO files.

Hopefully someone will point out that I am making an error somewhere.

I have also just tested BIOS boot of a Persistent UNetbootin USB drive
and there is no persistence.

[Bug 1877217] [NEW] WiFi Performance slow/unusable after upgrade from 19.10 -> 20.04

[Bug 1877194] Re: Selected audio output device not persistent between reboots (Resets to USB-device)

2020-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We configure PulseAudio by default to automatically choose hotplugged
devices so it might be thinking booting with USB counts as hotplugging.
To avoid this you should just be able to comment out:

  load-module module-switch-on-connect

from /etc/pulse/default.pa

Please also:

1. Clarify what "it is stuck at one min" means.

2. Try disconnecting (like mice) or disabling (like Bluetooth) various
devices to see if any are generating events that keep the machine awake.

but there's not much readable info there. Looks like it could be bug

Since this is inconclusive please continue following the steps in

[Bug 1851311] Re: loopback command hangs in 2.04 under UEFI

2020-05-06 Thread C.S.Cameron
I have just noticed that casper-rw persistent files are not working with
Ubuntu 20.04 when booted from an ISO file.

Persistent partitions are working, however persistent partitions do not
work with persistent-path and only one persistent partition is allowed
per USB disk.

This means that a multiboot, multipersistence USB drive is no longer
possible using ISO files.

Hopefully someone will point out that I am making an error somewhere.

I will fill out a separate bug report when I get time.

[Bug 1876486] Re: Kernel panic booting after 18.04 to 20.04 upgrade

2020-05-06 Thread warrenc5
This is something to do with linux 5 kernel api

You need to manually downgrade systemd - well - that's what I did.

when you boot with grub or refind - edit default entry and change the
init=/bin/init to init=/bin/bash

That will bypass systemd starting up and drop you straight into a shell.

mount -o remount /
mount /usr
mount /var
mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt
dpkg -i /mnt/systemd_241-7~deb10u3_amd64.deb

On a system that works or download a previous version somehow.

[Bug 1573095] Re: Cloud images fail to boot when a serial port is not available

2020-05-06 Thread WGH
I debugged this problem a bit. The problem stems from initramfs
attempting to use /dev/console (which refers to nonexisting /dev/ttyS0),
having its logging functions unexpectedly return errors, and broking
everything around.

You may have already noticed that when this happens, 100% CPU time is
consumed. If you enable sysrq keys with sysrq_always_enabled=1, and dump
the task list (e.g. virsh send-key ubuntu18.04 KEY_LEFTALT KEY_SYSRQ
KEY_T), you'll notice that there's always a combination of
console_setup/loadkeys/setfont processes with evergrowing PIDs, which
likely means that something is running them in tight loop.

Now, if you patch "panic()" in /usr/share/initramfs-
tools/scripts/functions so it would print its argument to the console
(echo "panic 1: " "$@" >/dev/kmsg), you'll see that the panic reason is
that "filesystem on /dev/vda1 requires manual fsck", and it's printed in
a loop. Indeed, the function does contain a loop:

checkfs()
{
while ! _checkfs_once "$@"; do
panic "The $2 filesystem on $1 requires a manual fsck"
done
}

This is actually a bogus error. The filesystem is (most likely) fine.
There's no fsck included in initramfs, so what happens is that the
following fragment is executed:

if ! command -v fsck >/dev/null 2>&1; then
log_warning_msg "fsck not present, so skipping $NAME file
system"
return
fi

log_warning_msg, however, returns non-zero status due to stdout being
broken, which causes _checkfs_once return non-zero status as well.

panic doesn't work correctly either: it simply can't spawn a shell on
broken /dev/console, and exits immediately, and that's what causes the
infinite loop.

What I think about the solution.

First, debugging this is PITA. Adding a serial device might be a
perfectly acceptable fix for many, but when this issue happens,
absolutely nothing in the console points to the direction that this's
what's missing. Even if it's necessary to leave ttyS0 as the main
console, initramfs should at least warn the user (through kmsg) that
/dev/console is broken.

Second, errors returned by logging function causing _checkfs_once return
error as well is a bug. I think errors in _log_msg should be suppressed.
If you do that, unless panic happens (which is rare), the boot will
succeed.

Third, as Grant Emsley said, maybe ttyS0 doesn't really have to be the

[Bug 1867402] Re: [snap] Icons in file picker are corrupted

2020-05-06 Thread Jora Sucharik
you can inspect the chromium content interface. just look for the slot
where chromium:icon-themes is plugged in, e.c. by:

$ snap connections chromium | grep chromium:icon-themes

if that snap doesn't provide you the user chosen icon theme it fallbacks
to hicolor.

[Bug 1828671] Re: Xephyr Input is broken

2020-05-06 Thread Julian Rendell
>From memory, there were bugs reported, but it seems it's:

- almost abandoned
- breaking change is by design; I don't think Xorg wants to support this kind
of configuration. Again, from memory, it's been changed so that it can only
work with xevents from the "master" XServer.

Sad, but I think this avenue (multiseat in general) is pretty much
abandonware.

It was amazing to see an i7 with 3 GPUs drive 14 instances of Minecraft
;-)

[Bug 1877207] Re: HDMI monitor

2020-05-06 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

[Bug 1876286] Re: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."

2020-05-06 Thread Rod Rivers
Joe,

If your not sure if there is any sensitive information in the trace
please do not send the files. I was able to get wireshark to decrypt
and decode the pcap and was certain that no username/password was
recorded in the files I posted.

The next logical step would be to get the source code, compile it and see if
you can trace through it to find the line that is failing. I looked at the
build instructions but they look complicated:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Evolution/Building

At this point I'm looking into either upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04 or
installing the flatpack version that was mentioned in the Linux Mint
forum.

[Bug 1877207] [NEW] HDMI monitor

2020-05-06 Thread Amit Kapila
Public bug reported:

I've Ubuntu 20 EOAN installed on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I have connected
an external monitor screen connected to the laptop through the HDMI laptop's
output. The external monitor only works when I go into the BIOS and select
HDMI. However the laptop monitor does not work simultaneously.
The internal monitor only works when I go into the BIOS and select System
Monitor. However the HDMI monitor does not work simultaneously.

This is the output of the xrandr command when the HDMI is enabled in the BIOS:
wasadmin@SATELLITE-L50D-B:~$ xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1280 x 1024, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected primary 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1280x1024 77.00*
wasadmin@SATELLITE-L50D-B:~$

This is the output of the xrandr command when the system monitor is enabled in
the BIOS:
wasadmin@SATELLITE-L50D-B:/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d$ xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1366 x 768, current 1366 x 768, maximum 1366 x 768
default connected 1366x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1366x768 76.00*

I cannot see any HDMI in the output even when the HDMI BIOS is enabled
in the BIOS. Can you help?

[Bug 1877192] Re: RTL8723bs bluetooth not working on 20.04

2020-05-06 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1877192/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1876286] [NEW] Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."

2020-05-06 Thread Joe Buc
Rod,

I saw your suggestions re: obtaining additional info via terminal and
"export GNUTLS_DEBUG_LEVEL=99
evolution".

I wasn't sure whether you were suggesting that I use that technique to
obtain more info and then forward the info to you. On the chance that
you wanted me to forward the info to you, I did execute the commands
and I made a copy of the results. The copy consists of a 20-page PDF
file. Please let me know if you wish me to forward to you a copy of the
results.

I have very limited familiarity with TLS, etc., so I have no idea
whether the "results" would contain info regarding my password for the
email requested from the server, so I have deferred sending the results
to you.

I await your response.

Joe
