[Bug 1900334] Re: [snap] Mouse pointer theme and scaling not honoured for cursor themes not included in gtk-common-themes

2020-10-23 Thread Carlos Pita
The Spotify snap has always shown a tiny mouse pointer in HiDPI screens.
The issue has been discussed in https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/very-ugly-
cursor-for-spotify-and-kde-snaps/17118 but the conclusion was that this
should be fixed upstream (here is the upstream report that presumably
nobody that matters will ever look at https://community.spotify.com/t5
/Desktop-Linux/Tiny-mouse-pointer-i-HiDPI-screen-only-Snap-
package/td-p/4938047). Should I understand from the above comments that
this can indeed be fixed by the fallback cursor scaling PR?

[Bug 1901272] Re: Inconsistent Bluetooth behavior on reboot 20.10 on rpi4

2020-10-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1901272/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you

This still happens on 20.10.

Now I'm using a proxy for faster downloads, but snapd is still writing
too much to disk (~9MB/s disk writes while ~1.5MB/s downloads).

snapd from journalctl -u with SNAPD_DEBUG=1 SNAPD_DEBUG_HTTP=7 is
attached.

Is there a new setting somewhere that can cause this?

In the settings I have already deactivated the automatic recalculation

[Bug 1901274] [NEW] Install of the boot loader failed

2020-10-23 Thread Stephen Russell
Public bug reported:

I was running Ubuntu 18.04 which was working fine. I attempted to update
to 20.4. The update failed miserably (many panic messages)and the
automatic recovery to 18.04 failed also. I then ran Ubuntu 16.04 from
disk, which worked, but would not install. I ran "boot-repair" which
also failed (exited). I created a new disk image of 18.04 which seemed
to install and I am using it to send this message, but grub-installer
would not load on any of the Ubuntu partitions on my hardware. I will
need to manually install a boot loader and I have no idea how to do
that. Please help, else this machine will become a Windows 7 machine and
I do not have any use for that OS.

This popup annoyance represents the major part of the questions tagged
"gnome-keyring" (https://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/gnome-keyring)
all over the place.

And it all ends up with two MAIN issues: This one about the "modal"
focus of the prompt.

And the other one about naming which service the popup is prompting a
password for.

[Bug 1872950] Re: Nvidia 340.108 fails to install with kernels 5.5 and 5.6

2020-10-23 Thread sally
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 without realizing this problem with the
nvidia-340.108 . The upgrade failed to install this driver with the 5.8
kernel that comes with the upgrade. Fortunately, I still have the 5.4
kernel that is compatible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1400 with legacy GPU
GeForce 8400M GS. I wondered whether there is or will be a fix for the
nvidia driver to make it compatible with the 5.8 kernel in Ubuntu 20.10.
Thank you for your help.

[Bug 1044549] Re: The "Access Prompt" randomly pop up!

2020-10-23 Thread Raphaël Droz
Several problems about bug triage itself:

- Since 2012, no corresponding bug has been opened upstream
(https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gcr/-/issues) : ping pkg-gnome-maintainers?
- upstream isn't subscribed to this bug either (@NielsDG?)
- The code about the gcr-prompter itself does not seem to have been
significantly touched since its creation by Stef Walter in 2012:
 * https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gcr/-/commits/master/ui/gcr-prompter-tool.c
 * https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gcr/-/commits/master/ui/gcr-prompt-dialog.c
 * https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gcr/-/commits/master/ui/gcr-unlock-renderer.c

except "Grab-keyboard logic" in
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gcr/-/commit/879b2734a9af3d8658b7b760c609daaf5b5d4fec
(part of 3.36.0) (@Dmitry Baryshkov)

Any chance this prompt could be fixed?

[Bug 1901272] [NEW] Inconsistent Bluetooth behavior on reboot 20.10 on rpi4

2020-10-23 Thread Daniel
Public bug reported:

Raspberry pi 4 4Gb ram
Ubuntu desktop 20.10 64 bit
After reboot no Bluetooth devices connect, scanning Bluetooth devices works,
results with same device name (duplicated and with not set up status).
Sometimes after several reboots it works.
If I use power off and cycle power then it works fine each time.

[Bug 1901271] [NEW] update to 20.10 dies looking at init scripts in libc package

2020-10-23 Thread Tessa
Public bug reported:

my upgrade from 20.04 to 20.10 hung on `libc` with a message that was
something like "checking init scripts". I had to kill it from the
terminal, and then of course the whole upgrade failed. after the upgrade
failed, X repeatedly crashed until I had to log out.

Running `aptitude dist-upgrade` from a console seems to have resolved
the upgrade successfully, including re-running the `libc` config stage
that failed before, so it's unclear what caused it to hang.

[Bug 1044549] Re: The "Access Prompt" randomly pop up!

2020-10-23 Thread Raphaël Droz
This 8-years problem still exists on 20.04 (!)

As commented in #4 back in 2012, the particular focus-mode triggers crazy
situations.
Ex: autologin + autostart app's and/or auto-move windows (dedicated desktop per
window)

After GDM (auto)login, the "gcr-prompter" can not be focused or even worst: not
even visible. But still holds a TOTAL focus (grabbing all inputs).
That means neither the popup nor the session can be closed, Gnome-shell can't
be restarted, and the only possibility is to switch to tty, use `ps`,
determinate the name of the process... what not even a workaround for a normal
user.

I think there is no reason that justify keeping a user from using
"Alt-F2 / restart".

About why this popup start in the first place is, IMHO, not a subject (I've 1
owncloud + 2 google accounts there and I can't tell why this come up)
... But *if* this popup arises it must not brick the whole session.

[Bug 1895157] Re: Boinc cannot enable RPC access to start client or manager

2020-10-23 Thread M. Weinberg
I had the same problem in Ubuntu 20.10 and was able to get boinc working
again by doing the following:

1. Stop boinc service and kill any boinc processes
2. Remove the gui_rpc_auth.cfg from /etc/boinc (It would probably be safer to
change its name to gui_rpc_auth.cfg.old or something.)
3. Reboot computer.
4. Start boinc-client

After doing it, I found that the gui_rpc_auth.cfg was recreated with a
password in it. This is a system generated password, not one that the
user knows anything about.

I didn't have to change firewall settings.

Perhaps the reason that boinc didn't work in 20.10 was because a
corrupted gui_rpc_auth.cfg file was included in the distribution.I
noticed that the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file before I removed it in Step 2
above had a byte size of one byte. After is was recreated it was still
a small file, but larger than one byte.

I probably had to temporarily change permissions in /etc/boinc, so this
isn't a solution for a multi-user system, but hopefully it will give the
package maintainers a clue on how to resolve this. Without a fix, boinc
simply doesn't work in 20.10.

can happen, even if Cadence is removed. We cannot support any system
that has ever had Cadence installed or used the KXStudio repos. This bug

[Bug 1730612] Re: Enable Remote desktop feature during build

2020-10-23 Thread Christian Rauch
This is still an issue on Ubuntu 20.10, while the GNOME Shell remote-
desktop / screencast support on Wayland has been enabled for Fedora and
other distributions for some time now.

What is Ubuntu holding back from enabling Wayland remote-desktop support
(and consecutively a Wayland-by-default session)?

[Bug 1901266] [NEW] system slagish, thermal keep frequency at 400MHz

2020-10-23 Thread Alexander Mitsos
Public bug reported:

This morning I upgraded to 20.10 from 20.04

The system was quite slow although I have a fast machine. My virtual windows 10
on virtualbox became unusable. When I tried to have the virtual machine open, I
could not participate properly in a zoom call (I could still hear the people
but they said that my voice was very choppy)
On 20.04 I was super-happy with the speed and I could have as many apps running
as I want.

Based on google I started looking at
% journalctl --follow
and this shows quite a few errors but not repeating often enough to explain it.

Then I googled some more and found that /boot/efi was writing and
reading.

Then I googled some more and thought I had trouble with gnome. So I reset it to
default
% dconf reset -f /org/gnome/
and disabled the extensions. This made things slightly better but by far not
acceptable.

After lots of searching I checked the frequency of the CPUs and it was at the
minimum 400Hz (as shown by i7z and also other tools). I tried setting the
governor with cpufreqctl and similar methods but this did not change anything.
I then found an old bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1769236 and tried
% sudo systemctl stop thermald
this seems to work. After a few seconds the frequency shown in i7z goes to
~4500 MHz and the virtual machine seems to work fine.

use dpkg to look up the kernel version it fails.

Defining "KERNELS" to be CURRENT_KERNEL allows the configure to work:

case "$1" in
configure)
# Added manually, since we mangled the arguments, and
dpkg-maintscript-helper
# won't work
if [ -n "$2" ] && `dpkg --compare-versions "$2" lt "340.106-0ubuntu5"`;
then
rm -f /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-340.conf
fi
CURRENT_KERNEL=$(uname -r)
KERNELS=$CURRENT_KERNEL
NEWEST_KERNEL=$(get_newest_kernel "$KERNELS")

Seriously - this has been an issue for over a year, and nobody bothered
to look into it?

[Bug 1901259] [NEW] Installing Ubuntu on HP Envy dv7 Notebook PC grub install crashes

2020-10-23 Thread Rob Montalvo
Public bug reported:

Towards the end of the installation, I got a dialog window that
indicated a failure with grub writing to a certain partition.
Furthermore, it indicated that the failure was fatal (if I remember the
message correctly). I also got an "Installation Complete" dialog window
that read: Installation is complete. You need to restart the computer
in order to use the new installation. That window contained a button
"Restart Now", but the button was inactive. As a result, I was not able
to effect the restart.

[Bug 1901257] [NEW] Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2020-10-23

2020-10-23 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to

a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1901187] Re: Keyboard layout switch problem

2020-10-23 Thread Dhia Eddine Chouchane
** Description changed:

  Hello,

- I have a problem where keyboard layout change randomly stops actually
- switching the keyboard input layout.
+ I have a problem where keyboard layout change stops actually switching
+ the keyboard input layout.

  Ubuntu version: 20.04.1 LTS

Desktop environment: Gnome 3.36.3 (Ubuntu desktop)
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Plug an external USB keyboard
+ 2. Log in to your ubuntu-desktop session
+ 3. Change layout => works properly
+ 4. Unplug USB keyboard and plug it again
+ 5. Change keyboard layout => Problem

  Expected behaviour:
Changing keyboard layout through GUI to change keyboard layout from French to
English.

  What happened instead:
The GUI indicates that the layout changed. However when typing text into any
window, the layout actually does not change.

- I can't find what is causing this problem to happen as restarting the
computer fixes it temporarily until it happens again.
- It seems to happen after the computer goes into sleep.
+ This problem also happens when the computer goes to sleep as it disconnects
USB devices.
+ Once the external USB keyboard is disconnected, the only way to get it to
switch layout is by logging out and back in.

If you could point me out to what logs would be useful and where to find
them, I could provide you with more information.

- Update :
- Unplugging my external USB keyboard fixes the issue; re-plugging it causes it
to happen again.

- Description:
+ Note:
It is worth noting that I am using an external USB keyboard on my laptop.
Unplugging the keyboard fixes the problem once it happens. However re-plugging
it causes the problem to instantly happen again.

It happens when I use terminator with heavy text update like output of
apt-update or find /

it also sometimes happen when I get a notification

I was able to capture it with terminator and take a screenshot

I picked gnome-shell because I do't think it is only happening with
terminator

It also happens when I move the terminator window around

[Bug 1900642] Re: sssd won't start

2020-10-23 Thread fprietog
I may add something else. During sssd install there were several warning
messages:

Configurando sssd-common (2.3.1-3) ...
Creating SSSD system user & group...
adduser: Aviso: El directorio personal «/var/lib/sss» no pertenece al usuario
que está creando.
Warning: found usr.sbin.sssd in /etc/apparmor.d/force-complain, forcing
complain mode
Warning from /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.sssd (/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.sssd line
54): Caching disabled for: 'usr.sbin.sssd' due to force complain

About the first warning "adduser: Aviso: El directorio personal «/var/lib/sss»
no pertenece al usuario que está creando."
(translation: adduser: Warning: The personal directory «/var/lib/sss» doesn't
belong to the user that is being created).

I can tell that it's true; the directory /var/lib/sss is owned by root instead
of sssd.
All the directories and files inside /var/lib/sss are owned by sssd user except
/var/lib/sss/deskprofile directory that is also owned by root.

Probably not a problem, but may be also patched.

I can't tell about the warning messages related to apparmor.

[Bug 1901196] Re: kernel module failed to build [ Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.8.0-25-generic (x86_64)]

2020-10-23 Thread Leonardo
Hello, I'm the same. I started researching and tried:
sudo dkms --verbose build -m nvidia-340 -v 340.108
and it returned the same error.

Since I still have an old kernel installed I tried:
sudo dkms --verbose build -m nvidia-340 -v 340.108 -k 5.4.0-26-generic

and it worked perfect, just for that kernel.

I don't have much knowledge, and I don't know where the error can be
with the 5.8.0-25-generic kernel.

Note: I just upgraded Ubuntu to Groovy, everything worked fine except
nvidia-340.

[Bug 1900356] Re: transition from systemd to snapd breaks functionality

2020-10-23 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Ahm, yes, there's another problem, but completely different one.

The upgrade procedure vom 18.04 to 20.04 converts LXD images from the
old debian based LXD to the snap based LXD and thus from /var/lib/lxd to
/var/snap/lxd/common/lxd and thus out of the encrypted directory.

I'm not sure whether it causes any trouble with LXD or snap to mount an
ecrypted file system to /var/snap/lxd/common/lxd or
/var/snap/lxd/common

and whether I could do it before upgrading to avoid data beeing copied
to non-encrypted disks.

[Bug 1894895] Re: [linux-azure][hibernation] ]VM hangs after hibernation/resume if the VM has SRIOV NIC and has been deallocated

2020-10-23 Thread Marcelo Cerri
SRU submission: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-
team/2020-October/114240.html

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  Description of problem:
On Azure, if the VM is Stopped(deallocated) and later Started, the VF NIC's
VMBus Instance GUID may change, and as a result hibernation/resume can hang
forever.

This happens to the latest stable release of the linux-azure
5.4.0-1023.23 kernel and the latest mainline linux kernel.

  [Test Case]

  How reproducible:
  100%

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Start a VM in Azure that supports Accelerated Networking, and enable
hibernation properly (please refer to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/+bug/1880032/comments/14 )

  2. Do hibernation from serial console
  # systemctl hibernate

  4. After the VM state changes to "Stopped", click "Stop" button from
Azure portal to change the VM state to Stopped(deallocated)

  5. Wait for some time (e.g. 10 minutes? 1 hour?), and click the "Start"
button to start the VM, and then check the boot-up process from the
  serial console.

[Bug 1901119] Re: nvidia-340

2020-10-23 Thread Eduardo Barretto
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1894893] Re: [linux-azure][hibernation] GPU device no longer working after resume from hibernation in NV6 VM size

2020-10-23 Thread Marcelo Cerri
** Also affects: linux-azure (Ubuntu Groovy)

** Also affects: linux-azure (Ubuntu Focal)
   Importance: Undecided

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu Focal)
   Status: New => In Progress

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu Groovy)
   Status: New => Fix Committed

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu Groovy)
Status: Fix Committed => In Progress

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
There are failed logs after resume from hibernation in NV6 (GPU passthrough
size) VM in Azure:
  [ 1432.153730] hv_pci 47505500-0001--3130-444531334632: hv_irq_unmask()
failed: 0x5
  [ 1432.167910] hv_pci 47505500-0001--3130-444531334632: hv_irq_unmask()
failed: 0x5

This happens to the latest stable release of the linux-azure
5.4.0-1023.23 kernel and the latest mainline linux kernel.

- How reproducible:
+ [Test Case]
+
+ How reproducible:
  100%

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Start a Standard_NV6 VM in Azure and enable hibernation properly (please
refer to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/+bug/1880032/comments/14 )

  E.g. here I create a Generation-1 Ubuntu 20.04 Standard NV6_Promo (6
vcpus, 56 GiB memory) VM in East US 2.

  2. Make sure the in-kernel open-source nouveau driver is loaded, or
blacklist the nouveau driver and install the official Nvidia GPU driver
  (please follow https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-
machines/linux/n-series-driver-setup : "Install GRID drivers on NV or
NVv3-series VMs" -- the most important step to run the "./NVIDIA-Linux-
  x86_64-grid.run".)

  3. Run hibernation from serial console
  # systemctl hibernate

  4. After hibernation finishes, start VM and check dmesg
  # dmesg|grep fail

  Actual results:
  [ 1432.153730] hv_pci 47505500-0001--3130-444531334632: hv_irq_unmask()
failed: 0x5
  [ 1432.167910] hv_pci 47505500-0001--3130-444531334632: hv_irq_unmask()
failed: 0x5

And /proc/interrupts shows that the GPU interrupts are no longer
  happening.

  Expected results:
No failed logs, and the GPU interrupt should still happen after hibernation.

+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The fix touches the pci-hyperv and can compromise the hyper-v guest
+ drivers. However the change is focuses on the execution path used for
+ hibernation that is still not officially supported.
+
+ [Other info]

  BUG FIX:
  I made a fix here: https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/9/4/1268.

Without the patch, we see the error "hv_pci
  47505500-0001--3130-444531334632: hv_irq_unmask() failed: 0x5"
during hibernation when the VM has the Nvidia GPU driver loaded, and
after hibernation the GPU driver can no longer receive any MSI/MSI-X
  interrupts when we check /proc/interrupts.

With the patch, we should no longer see the error, and the GPU driver
should still receive interrupts after hibernation.

[Bug 1898022] Re: grub upgrade 18.04->20.04 loses dual-boot to W10

2020-10-23 Thread udippel
I made some progress:

$ grub-probe -t device /boot/grub
/dev/sda6

$ mount
[...]
/dev/sda6 on /boot type ext4 (rw,relatime)
/dev/sda2 on /boot/efi type vfat
(rw,relatime,fmask=0077,dmask=0077,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro)

$ sudo ls /boot/efi/EFI/Ubuntu
BOOTX64.CSV grub.cfg grubx64.efi mmx64.efi shimx64.efi

$ dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 2> /dev/null | grep -q GRUB && echo "GRUB found"
$

If I read these correctly, I do have files, but since the update no more
MBR in /dev/sda. Is this observed correctly?

[Bug 1901020] Re: new upstream release 2020d

2020-10-23 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

New upstream version, affecting the following future timestamps:
- - Fiji starts DST later than usual, on 2020-12-20.
- - Palestine ends DST earlier than predicted, on 2020-10-24.
+   - Fiji starts DST later than usual, on 2020-12-20.
+   - Palestine ends DST earlier than predicted, on 2020-10-24.
+ - Revised predictions for Morocco's changes starting in 2023.
+ - Canada's Yukon changes to -07 on 2020-11-01, not 2020-03-08.
+ - Macquarie Island has stayed in sync with Tasmania since 2011.
+ - Casey, Antarctica is at +08 in winter and +11 in summer since 2018.
+
+ Additionally, upstream removed the "old" SystemV timezones, but the SRU
+ will ensure that they are kept. Subsequently, these should be checked
+ for using the following:
+
+ zdump -v SystemV/MST7
+ zdump -v America/Phoenix
+
+ The information returned by SystemV/MST7 should be included in
+ America/Phoenix's output.

Verification is done with 'zdump'. The first timezone that gets changed
in the updated package is dumped with "zdump -v
$region/$timezone_that_changed" (this needed to be greped for in
  /usr/share/zoneinfo/). [For example: "zdump -v Africa/Casablanca".] This
is compared to the same output after the updated package got installed.
If those are different the verification is considered done.

[Bug 1894895] Re: [linux-azure][hibernation] ]VM hangs after hibernation/resume if the VM has SRIOV NIC and has been deallocated

2020-10-23 Thread Marcelo Cerri
5.8 already received the fix by upstream stable updates (LP:#1896795)
and hibernation is not supported in 4.15, because of that I'm targeting
only 5.4.

** Also affects: linux-azure (Ubuntu Focal)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: linux-azure (Ubuntu Focal)
   Status: New => In Progress

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
  Description of problem:
On Azure, if the VM is Stopped(deallocated) and later Started, the VF NIC's
VMBus Instance GUID may change, and as a result hibernation/resume can hang
forever.

This happens to the latest stable release of the linux-azure
5.4.0-1023.23 kernel and the latest mainline linux kernel.
+
+ [Test Case]

  How reproducible:
  100%

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Start a VM in Azure that supports Accelerated Networking, and enable
hibernation properly (please refer to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-azure/+bug/1880032/comments/14 )

  2. Do hibernation from serial console
  # systemctl hibernate

  4. After the VM state changes to "Stopped", click "Stop" button from
Azure portal to change the VM state to Stopped(deallocated)

  5. Wait for some time (e.g. 10 minutes? 1 hour?), and click the "Start"
button to start the VM, and then check the boot-up process from the
  serial console.

  Actual results:
Can not boot up. VM hangs after resume.

  (The VM hangs here forever)

+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The fix touched the vmbus and can compromise the hyper-v guest drivers.
+ However the change is simple and just adds an additional timeout.
