[Bug 1919008] [NEW] 'Extract here' for .zip files not working as intended.
Public bug reported: Repro steps: 1. Download a .zip file. 2. Right-click on it and select 'Extract here'. Note that my .zip file had one sub-folder and that sub-folder had many other sub-folders and files. Size ~ 240 MB Expected behavior: A sub-folder should be extracted with size ~240 MB. Actual behavior: A sub-folder was extracted, but its size was zero. No sub-folders or files in it. This has happened multiple times with me over the past few weeks. After reading log in #14, and some code from cloud-init and maas I still cannot find any code that will let cloud-init try to install flash-kernel wtih zfsutils-linux. and it seems the error because squashfs didn't have any kernel installed. So `linux-version` cannot find any kernel version to pass to flash-kernel to process postinst script. `Can't find /boot/vmlinuz- (see /tmp/flash-kernel-no-kernel-error.log)` $kvers is empty. and as I know, squashfs only for temp utils? It will create an environment for curtin to install real system into disk Am I correct? [Bug 1888309] Re: [MIR] octavia
I have serious reservations about this package. The build logs are very messy and report a LOT of problems. How does one tell "these problems are completely normal" from "these problems indicate a regression in the package"? There's many cases of building strings to execute, either via simple one-liner scripts, or via subprocess execution; it feels very strange to see a tool programmed in a high-level scripting language build up bash scripts through string operations and store them to disk, particularly into /sbin/. I have reported two issues to the Openstack bug tracker for things that I believe may be security problems. It looks like Octavia may be written assuming malicious network inputs are impossible. https://storyboard.openstack.org/#!/story/2008697 https://storyboard.openstack.org/#!/story/2008715 The MIR review included a comment that there's no root daemon in this package, but many of the operations it appears to perform require root- equivalent privileges. So I started looking for how the services in this package are started and had a great deal of difficulty figuring out how the debian/*.init.in files are turned into anything useful. (Hint for the future universe/o/openstack-pkg-tools/openstack-pkg- tools_113ubuntu1/pkgos.make ). I'm still not sure what user accounts are used when starting the services in this package -- or, by source inspection alone, how the services are started at all. I don't think this package is ready for security support by the Ubuntu security team at this time. There's too many open questions about how this package functions and how quality assurance is maintained. I'm sorry I don't have concrete asks for this package, but consider: - a debian/README.source file that describes how to work with this package - an error-free build log, or at least notes emitted in the log at every expected error about what the expected error is, and why - a clear statement that the HTTP endpoint is root-equivalent or changes to the HTTP server that would enforce stronger separation between API consumer and root. Security team NAK for promoting octavia to main at this time. [Bug 1919003] Re: Network Name Resolution fails with iproute2 4.15.0-2ubuntu1.3
My initial conclusion may not have been correct. I now think that the fix in iproute2 4.15.0-2ubuntu1.3 made the problem more apparent. The Network Name Resolution service is not actually failing. It is being stopped and restarted (based on the logs). So the real problem seems to be a very aggressive approach to restarting the Network Name Resolution service. In our case, the DHCPClient request is not getting a response, yet the Network Name Resolution service is still being restarted. The service stopped failing when we downgraded iproute2 from 4.15.0-2ubuntu1.3 to 4.15.0-2ubuntu1.1. The DHCPClient seems to be involved in the chain of events. At the same frequency as the service failures, we do an ifup on a non- auto dhcp interface. The ifup results in a DHCP request, which in this case does not get a response (the link to the DHCP server is down. [Bug 1813441] Re: Can no longer drag and drop files between desktop and applications
Guys, this is a *BRUTAL* regression. It's NOT acceptable to break the desktop experience like that in a LTS release because "the legacy code was unmaintainable". Either replace the legacy code with a mature, well- written extension which works *exactly* the same way, or continue to maintain the old dirty (whatever) code, until you have a VALID replacement. You're *under-estimating* the impact of such a bug. Desktop icons have been "a thing" for the last 30 years or so and are the first thing any user sees. And I'm not talking only about non-technical people: I'm talking about people like me that have been using Linux since 1998. Now, not only arrow keys and drag'n'drop don't work, but even just creating or deleting a file on the desktop causes an ugly refresh. Sometimes, just moving an icon causes the whole gnome shell to crash. I was hoping this bug would be fixed ASAP after the 20.04 release or, at most, for the 20.10 release, but still nothing. And, no, I don't wanna use dirty workarounds which will break on upgrade. I'd like an officially-supported fix. For instabilities like these "the world" stopped using KDE 4 and switched to GNOME. Even MANY years later now, with KDE perfectly stable etc., people still use GNOME. Do you really want to loose the desktop segment? People will stop using Ubuntu for things like that. [Bug 1846423]
I've been poking around a little and it appears to me that the parsing error was introduced in the fix for bug 1555646. The fix backported a commit to the upstream libical to do the type validation, but the libical version was changed shortly afterwards to use a generated table, so they won't have noticed that the DURATION case for TRIGGER was missing. Those changes are quite invasive, but simply adding DURATION to the type check might be enough to fix the current problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1846423 Title: Lightning: Cannot dismiss reminders. [Bug 1918987] [NEW] Groovy update: upstream stable patchset 2021-03-12
Public bug reported: SRU Justification Impact: The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or a minimally backported form of that patch. [Bug 1912371] Re: [MIR] flashrom + libftdi
I have reviewed flashrom along with fwupd and I don't see anything that looks like it will cause problems. The flashrom documentation recommends using vendors' flashing utilities when possible for laptops, and there is a link to that page of the documentation in the manpage. I have attached a debdiff to this comment that addresses several other concerns about this MIR. The attached debdiff 1) Adds the build time unit tests to the meson build 2) Adds a simple test script that operates on an emulated chip without sudo privileges. This runs as an autopkgtest 3) Removes the warning about command line syntax change from the manpage 4) Adds a comment on the stability of this program to the manpage 5) Adds a .symbols file for libflashrom1 ** Patch added: "flashrom MIR" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashrom/+bug/1912371/+attachment/5476160/+files/lp1912371.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1912371 Title: [MIR] flashrom + libftdi To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashrom/+bug/1912371/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1902103] Re: Ensure default fstab options are sane and consistent across all images
@gjolly, I've taken a look at the 'Where problems could occur' section of the SRU template and I'm concerned about the risk of regression for users altering mount options for the root file system. My concerns involve the root filesystem line alone. I think 'discard' is nice-to-have but not worth the risk of breaking users that alter the line via code. I'm not convinced we should change the error option from 'continue' to 'remount-ro' in an SRU either; first because it could break automation that users have to change the line and second it changes behavior for error handling that could break user assumptions of systems already in production should they deploy with a newly built image and they'll be unlikely to have image qualification tests that trigger an IO error. I recommend SRU'ing without the changes for the root filesystem. The change to the fstab line for the EFI file system pertains to a security improvement which I like to see. I think the risk is much lower that a user has automation changing mount options for this file system. The other risk is one of behavior. Will users have a non-root user accessing the EFI mountpoint and be broken by this change? Given the contents of the file system I don't believe it's unlikely most users would be accessing this directly. I believe the benefit from the change justifies the umask SRU. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1902103 Title: Ensure default fstab options are sane and consistent across all images To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1902103/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1918974] [NEW] Focal update: v5.4.102 upstream stable release
Public bug reported: SRU Justification Impact: The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or a minimally backported form of that patch. The kernel no longer causes flash-kernel to be installed, but unfortunately flash-kernel is *pre-baked* in the arm* cloud images, so we'd have to remove it from them too. RE: EFI-STUB - GRUB is the default way to boot Ubuntu on EFI systems. Users can choose to boot using EFI-STUB, but they can also remove any Recommended packages. Adding grub-efi-arm64 to Recommends will also get arm64 on-par with amd64, which also recommends GRUB. ** Also affects: cloud-images Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1918427 Title: curtin: install flash-kernel in arm64 UEFI unexpected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1918427/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1918948] Re: Issue in Extended Disk Data retrieval (biosdisk: int 13h/service 48h)
Could narrow the problem down to both a Grub issue, but more relevant - to a Dell BIOS issue as well. So, 2 bugs! Regarding GRUB, the disk information is read through the int 13h/service 48h from BIOS[0]. But testing in an HP machine (with HW RAID as well), and comparing that with what we call the EDD kernel module[1] output (the early boot kernel code that runs in realmode and performs the exact same query as GRUB), it seems GRUB is only filling the lower 32 bits of the total_sectors variable. This is indeed a bug, and I've reported that to GRUB community [2]. But notice I've mentioned an HP machine...because the Dell machine has an even worse bug. In the case of Dell, the BIOS reading both from kernel EDD module and GRUB as well is 0x - this value is the full 32-bit mask filled, which would correspond to a disk of 2TB. In my case, the HW RAID5 exposes a disk of 8TB! So, regardless if GRUB is only filling the lower 32 bits, the value from Dell BIOS is wrong. I've sought Dell support through some Dell contacts I've found in kernel commits [3]; they promptly responded, forwarding internally my issue report to their firmware team, but since then they are quiet - hope they can clarify us on the reason of this bogus return value from their BIOS. GRUB community is also quiet regarding my bug report in their code. [Bug 1918948] Re: Issue in Extended Disk Data retrieval (biosdisk: int 13h/service 48h)
After checking the fibmap files from the user, could verify that the LBAs for the non-working files are very large compared to the ones that are working - it's a data point reinforcing the theory that GRUB is miscalculating something for files after some LBA offset. Managed to reproduced the issue in-house using a Dell machine with such HW RAID5 setup. The idea to reproduce is basically have a legacy-BIOS booting mode, and duplicate the vmlinuz/initrd pair until it almost fills the HDD - then, use fibmap to determine the ones living in the largest LBAs, and keep them, a few of them should be enough. Keep a valid vmlinuz/initrd and grub config files/modules in a first small "/boot" partition so the machine can always boot, and duplicate the kernel files in a huge "/" partition after "/boot" in the disk. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1918948 Title: Issue in Extended Disk Data retrieval (biosdisk: int 13h/service 48h) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1918948/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
