Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1928114]

2021-05-13 Thread Alex Murray
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

[Bug 1928348] Re: Activation of network connection fails

2021-05-13 Thread Girish Sharma
girish@girish-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for girish:
root@girish-System-Product-Name:/home/girish# NetworkManager
root@girish-System-Product-Name:/home/girish# locate -b "\NetworkManager"
/etc/NetworkManager
/usr/lib/NetworkManager

1.30.0
root@girish-System-Product-Name:/home/girish# NetworkManager
root@girish-System-Product-Name:/home/girish# which NetworkManager
/usr/sbin/NetworkManager

Strange behavior. Today morning when I switched on the PC, after around 10
seconds, network connected and worked fine automatically, I didn't changed
anything, otherwise yesterday I got "Activation of Network connection failed"
popped up and after that popup, it got connected automatically. So, in all I
can say that this is somewhere bug in either kernel, userspace or
NetworkManager program. Something need to be fix for sure.

2021-05-13 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Ubuntu users ran the kernel on the Dell soundwire audio machines,
+ the dmesg shows the audio mchine driver is not found, then the
+ audio fails to initialize
+
+ [Fix]
+ Enable the intel soundwire audio machine driver and some related
+ codec driver.
+
+ [Test]
+ run fakeroot debian/rules clean updateconfigs, and check the
+ config.common.ubuntu, the content is not changed.
+ Build the kernel with this patch applied, the soundwire audio
+ machine driver is built.
+
+
+ [Where problems could occur]

[Bug 1906117] Re: program 'wx-config' missing from wx-common

2021-05-13 Thread Olly Betts
Indeed.

And the wx-config man page is shipped in wx-common because wx-config is
managed by the alternatives system, and can be provided by
libwxbase3.0-dev or libwxgtk3.0-gtk3-dev (or by other versions of those
at times when we have more than one wxwidgets release series packaged).

So closing as invalid.

please try removing these as a first step:

Then log in again and verify the bug still happens. If it does then
please also try disabling 'Ubuntu Dock' in the Extensions app.

in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the
latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If you then find the bug is still
present in the newer Ubuntu version, please add a comment here telling
us which new version it is in.

FYI: You're also referring to unpatched and outdated kernels for
xenial/16.04. If you tried a patched kernel the issue may no longer have
existed (fyi: last xenial kernel was 4.4.0.210.216 available using
standard support which has now ended).

[Bug 1928405] Re: mkdir/rm/sleep/ls causes kernel 'BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request'

2021-05-13 Thread Jonathan L
Typo: should be:

About half of the logs show tainted (G, D) and *HALF* untainted.

These computers are rebooted perhaps once a month, typically by power
failure.

[Bug 1928405] [NEW] mkdir/rm/sleep/ls causes kernel 'BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request'

2021-05-13 Thread Jonathan L
Public bug reported:

I have a network of stock 16.04.2 LTS (Xenial Xerus) servers with
entirely unmodified "4.4.0-62-generic #83-Ubuntu" kernel running on a
private network; they run telemetry programs, mostly sh/php out of
crontab, with very light user interaction for configuration via apache
and extremely occasional adminstrator ssh access. They all are on the
same hardware: same motherboard, same amount of RAM, vary similar very
small SATA SSD disks.

A recent fault made us examine the logs, and we see that since 2017
about half a dozen servers are reporting kernel bugs about once a month.

 BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 88032fc00062
 CPU: 0 PID: 26071 Comm: mkdir Not tainted 4.4.0-62-generic #83-Ubuntu

The details vary. The most common command is mkdir, but also rm, head,
basename, ls, sleep. (There are every-minute cronjobs sh-scripts which
run these commands.)

About half of the logs show tainted (G, D) and have untainted.

I have found no pattern with time of day, uptime, load (0.16, 0.22, 0.25
for following report), day of week.

This is a typical syslog entry, from 2021-01-29; it has the same issue
in March and May (Comm: mkdir, but tainted G D).

[Bug 1928401] [NEW] bbduk error assigning memory

2021-05-13 Thread Gastón Viarengo
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS. I've installed bbmap (version
38.79+dfsg-1) through "sudo apt-get install bbmap". However, when
running "bbduk.sh --version" or a script "bbduk.sh -Xmx..." (I've tried
with -Xmx5g, -Xmx4g, -Xmx1g, -Xmx800m, -Xmx100m and without setting -Xmx
on a 8 gb RAM machine) I get the following error:

/usr/bin/bbduk.sh: línea 344: /usr/share/bbmap/calcmem: No existe el archivo o
el directorio
/usr/bin/bbduk.sh: línea 345: setEnvironment: orden no encontrada

Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.
Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit.

Downloading the package, untaring it and adding the path to the
directory in the .bashrc file prompts the same error when running the
above described commands. Also, the folder /calcmem does indeed do not
exist.

[Bug 1852985] Re: X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error)

2021-05-13 Thread PowerKiKi
`sudo apt install unifont` and restarting the computer does **not**
solve the problem for me, and it can still be reproduced via:

```
git init testrepo
cd testrepo
git commit --allow-empty -m 
gitk
```

This might be because I also have manually installed
`~/.fonts/NotoColorEmoji.ttf` in order to show color emoji. And the
color emoji does show correctly in terminal (see attachment), but it
will still crash gitk.

Right-clicking in the 'All Day' area should always give users the 'New
Event' context option -- even if there's already an event in there. Without
this right-clicking ability, users have to go through the extra step of
creating a new event in the regular schedule area, then clearing the 'Time

[Bug 1928397] Re: ensure python is marked for removal when upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04

2021-05-13 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

  There are still a lot of bug reports where users cannot upgrade from
  Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to Ubuntu 20.40 LTS due to python still being kept when
  the problem resolver runs. This is due to a bit of code being removed
  when 20.04.31 was uploaded[1]. That code should be restored as it will
  allow more users to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

  [Test Cases]
  1) lxc launch ubuntu:18.04
  2) Restore the apt-clone file from LP: #1927268
  3) Run do-release-upgrade
  4) Observe a failure to calculate the upgrade to Focal

  With the version of the release upgrader from -proposed (do-release-
  upgrade -p) the upgrade to Focal will be calculated successfully.

  [Where Problems Could Occur]
  This code previously existed in the release upgrader and just ensures that we
are are moving python from the system. However, there could also be typos in
the restored code but that would cause a Traceback when running the test case
so that would get caught.

+ [Other Info]
+ That being said it would be good to get more testing of this version of the
release upgrader so I'll look at recent bug reports where python is marked for
keeping (MarkKeep python:amd64 < 2.7.15~rc1-1 @ii gR > FU=0) and ask those
users to test the release upgrader from -proposed.

I don't understand why it's issuing an AUDIT_SET command after it
already decided to exit -- maybe it's just trying to tear itself down
cleanly.

I found a few cases in the kernel code for returning both file exists and
permission denied:

kernel/audit.c audit_netlink_ok():

/* Only support auditd and auditctl in initial pid namespace
 * for now. */
if (task_active_pid_ns(current) != _pid_ns)
return -EPERM;

if (!netlink_capable(skb, CAP_AUDIT_CONTROL))
err = -EPERM;
break;

kernel/audit.c audit_receive_msg():

auditd_pid = auditd_pid_vnr();
if (auditd_pid) {
/* replacing a healthy auditd is not allowed */
if (new_pid) {
audit_log_config_change("audit_pid",
new_pid, auditd_pid, 0);
return -EEXIST;
}

kernel/audit.c audit_set_feature():

   /* are we changing a locked feature? */
if (old_lock && (new_feature != old_feature)) {
audit_log_feature_change(i, old_feature, new_feature,
 old_lock, new_lock, 0);
return -EPERM;
}

Do any of these feel applicable to your environment?

Thanks

[Bug 1926256] Re: Pasted text in the terminal is always highlighted and selected

2021-05-13 Thread Egmont Koblinger
This is not an issue with the terminals, this is a new feature of
bash-5.1. Search for the word "highlight" at
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/info-gnu/2020-12/msg3.html .

---

This could not theoretically be a bug in gnome-terminal/vte. Terminals
don't directly paint a letter as a consequence of the user pressing that
letter, or pasting something.

I'm certain you can think of plenty of cases where pressing a certain
letter does not cause that letter to be painted on the canvas, but some
other action (larger repaints), or perhaps nothing at all.

When you press a letter, or paste some text, it is forwarded towards the
kernel over the tty line, but is not displayed. The kernel then might
handle it itself, or forward further towards some application (e.g. bash
in this case).

Then that application may or may not decide to paint something. Whatever
it decides to paint may or may not be the same as the typed letter or
pasted text. But even if it's the same, the terminal has no way of
making this connection. "The user pressed the letter X, I've forwarded
it, 100 milliseconds later I received a letter X to be painted, it must
be the «same» X" -- it cannot work like this.

What happens in this particular case is that you paste "foo", and in
response bash instructs the terminal to print "foo" in inverse colors.
The terminal does what it must do: obeys this instuction (without having
the slightest idea that it's related to the paste).

---

Two more things to mention to complete the picture:

There is a so-called "bracketed paste mode", where special markers are
inserted at the beginning and end of pasted data. This is how
applications (bash in this case) can distinguish it from data typed by
the user, without relying on timing heuristics.

Also, some terminals have a legacy "local echo" mode where pressed keys
immediately appear on the screen. I'm fairly certain it's not used
anywhere nowadays. Most terminals don't support it, and VTE removed it
in version 0.60, see https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/vte/-/issues/69 .

Because you have a misconfigured grub package on your system which is not
writing to the correct MBR. That is impossible for us to fix from the
package, as the bug is in the package configuration and there is no way to
programmatically determine the correct target for grub-install.

If 'grub-install /dev/sda' fixes it for you, then you should fix your grub
config to point to /dev/sda using 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc'.

2021-05-13 Thread Harlan Lieberman-Berg
Unless you all need it sooner, my plan is to add this to the cli.ini
file with the first upload post-freeze. You should be able to sync it
over from then. Erica confirmed that the flag has no functionality
prior to the v1.16 release, and v1.12 is what's in the freeze.

Let me know if you need it sooner, and I can do an upload to exp for you
to sync from.

[Bug 1906970] Re: dpkg hook hostname error

2021-05-13 Thread Ian Johnson
This happened to me when upgrading from Groovy to Hirsute just now, with
the same symptoms as above - I had `search .` in resolv.conf, but
nothing creating that entry in /etc/netplan or in
/etc/systemd/resolved.conf.

I fixed the broken package by fixing the erroneous entry
/etc/postfix/main.cf (removing the ".." at the end of the hostname) and
then running:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure --force postfix
sudo systemctl reload postfix

[Bug 1922334] Re: External monitor does not wake up on Titan Ridge laptops when docked (9500, TB16)

2021-05-13 Thread Georgi Boiko
@koba,
Yes. Even if I disconnect everything but the monitor from TB16 and the
remaining USB-Cs on the laptop, keep the laptop lid open and use the built-in
kb/touchpad to lock/unlock the screen, it triggers about 1 in 3 times. With the
lid open, the laptop screen wakes up, but the external remains stuck asleep.

Start up -> Log on -> Super+L -> Wait for the monitor to show "No signal
detected" -> Wait for the monitor to sleep, the LED indicator on it goes
orange -> Wait 3-5 seconds -> Press any key -> 1 in 3 times (but not
every third, can be many working/not working a row) reliably triggers it
and the monitor does not wake up.

This is the dmesg of an instance where I was able to continue using the

Notice that there are two instances of the retry page fault, one of them
right within 15 minutes of the machine being turned on. There was no
suspend/resume event this time. The laptop was turned on the whole time.

[Bug 1928393] [NEW] linux-firmware 1.197 causes kernel to report error "amdgpu: [gfxhub0] retry page fault"

2021-05-13 Thread Thiago Jung Bauermann
Public bug reported:

After upgrading linux-firmware from 1.190.5 to 1.197 (as part of the
upgrade from Ubuntu 20.10 to 21.04), I started experiencing frequent and
severe GPU instability. When this happens, I see this error in dmesg:

[20061.061069] amdgpu :03:00.0: amdgpu: [gfxhub0] retry page fault

[20061.061189] amdgpu :03:00.0: amdgpu:  RW: 0x0

I'll attach a couple of full dmesgs that I collected.

Many of the times when this happens, the screen and keyboard freeze
irreversibly (I tried waiting for more than 30 minutes, but it doesn't
help). I can still log in via ssh though. When there's no freeze, I can
continue using the computer normally, but the laptop fans keep running
are always running and the battery depletes fast. There's probably
something on a permanent loop either in the kernel or in the GPU.

This bug happens several times a day, rendering the machine so unstable
as to be almost unusable. It is a severe regression and I'm aghast that
it passed AMD's Quality Assurance.

After downgrading back to linux-firmware 1.190.5, the machine is back to
the previous, mostly-reliable state. Which is to say, this bug is gone,
I'm just left with the other amdgpu suspend bug I've learned to live
with since I bought this computer.

Please revert the amdgpu firmware in this package as soon as possible.
This is unbearable.

[Bug 1928311] Re: Timer renewal doesn't use --preconfigured-renewal

2021-05-13 Thread Robie Basak
Here's the full detail from Erica, quoted with permission.

Hello Certbot's packagers,

In Certbot v1.9.0, the CLI flag --preconfigured-renewal was added
(https://certbot.eff.org/docs/packaging.html):
--preconfigured-renewal should be included on the CLI or in cli.ini for
all invocations of Certbot, so that it can adjust its interactive output
regarding automated renewal (Certbot >= 1.9.0).
Certbot will be making use of this flag in its upcoming v1.16.0 release, in
order to provide instruction to the user about automated renewal.

Certbot packages which include a cronjob or timer to perform automatic
renewal should run with this CLI flag enabled.

One way to do this would be to include or merge it into the
cli.ini file (similar to what the Debian package currently
does to disable log
rotation):

```
$ cat /etc/letsencrypt/cli.ini
preconfigured-renewal = True
```

We would love to see this change applied to your Certbot package.

Thank you!
Erica

[Bug 1889556] Re: grub-install failure does not fail package upgrade (and does not roll back to matching modules)

2021-05-13 Thread Bill McGonigle
Fast forwarding eight months, this still breaks a fully-updated xubuntu
LTS 16 to LTS 18 release upgrade, at least. Does this need to be pushed
to LTS 16 (or 18 if the new package is run)?

Mounting the disks on the host (error was in a VM guest), chrooting, and
running grub-install /dev/sda fixes, so this doesn't seem like a complex
disk layout issue. I'm about to see if fully-updated LTS 18 to LTS 20
also breaks ... yep 'grub_file_filters' is the symbol this time. Same
fix.

Is it correct that do-release-upgrade has been broken in this way for
most of the past year?

[Bug 1928386] [NEW] Groovy update: upstream stable patchset 2021-05-13

2021-05-13 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
   stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

   upstream stable patchset 2021-05-13

v5.4.112, v5.10.30
v5.4.113, v5.10.31
