more activity on that bug.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Sebastien, thanks for your comment - it's nice to know that someone at
Ubuntu is paying attention to this thread.

I don't think forking an old version of Nautilus is practical. The
problem is that it would be a ton of work to keep such a fork compatible
with new versions of GTK, GLib and other libraries. Instead I think the
current version of Nautilus (3.8 in Saucy) should be patched to fix
this.

Removing type-ahead find has been controversial upstream (i.e. at GNOME)
- see, for example, the discussions at

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699087

Nevertheless I think it's very unlikely that the GNOME developers will
fix this for 3.10, or possibly ever. Even if they were to fix this in,
say, Nautilus 3.12 next spring, that version won't appear in Ubuntu
until late 2014 (since Ubuntu lags GNOME by a release cycle). So if
this going to be fixed in Ubuntu in the near future, I think Ubuntu will
need to take responsibility for doing that. You may not like that -
sure, in an ideal world this would be discussed rationally and fixed
upstream - but this is how it is.

You wrote not sure that's a problem that can easily by fixed by
Ubuntu. I guess that depends on what you mean by easily. I'm quite
confident that a competent hacker could come up with a patch to the
current Nautilus that restores type-ahead find in, say, 2-3 weeks. It
might even be easier. I'd start by attempting to git revert the commit
where this breakage was introduced:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=469eb89117e199a450aec3411183ed2e9f10f893

That will yield merge conflicts, which must be studied and resolved in
some nice way. This might not be solvable in a day, but I'd be very
surprised if this took more than a month of work.

To those of us on the outside, it's baffling that Ubuntu would not want
to invest that amount of effort to solve this, since this is a highly
visible core program on the Ubuntu desktop and it seems pretty evident
that the majority of users are harmed by this. Has someone at Ubuntu
already spent several weeks working on this and concluded it was too
difficult? Or does Ubuntu not feel it would be worth that amount of
effort?

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-07-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Sebastien, thanks for your reply. Given your staffing level I can see
why this is not as easy as it might seem.

According to this page Canonical has over 500 employees:

http://www.canonical.com/about-canonical

If only 10 of them are assigned to desktop maintenance, I would say that
team is seriously understaffed. But that's probably a discussion for
another forum, not this bug thread. :)

[Bug 1018718] Re: columns width redrawn by multiple events

2013-06-18 Thread Adam Dingle
I see this too with Nautilus 3.6.3 in Saucy. I can reliably reproduce
this bug like this:

1. Start Nautilus.
2. Go to the /etc folder in list view. On a typical machine this directory
will have a few hundred files.
3. Make sure you're displaying the default set of columns (Name, Size, Type,
Modified).
4. Now move the window, or resize it, or right click on any file to open a
context menu. The columns will jump around.

I originally filed this upstream at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698970, but then I realized I
could reproduce this only in Ambiance, not Adwaita. So I believe this
problem is theme-related.

[Bug 1191426] Re: logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect

2013-06-18 Thread Adam Dingle
Joseph,

I'm not convinced that a kernel bug report would be appropriate here.
As I've pointed out, a surprising amount of CPU time is being spent in
nouveau_connector_detect which is presumably in the Nouveau kernel
driver. The Nouveau project tracks its bugs separately from the Linux
kernel; see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/. I thought about
filing this at Nouveau, but that Web page says

If you are using packages from your distribution, send the bug
reports to your distribution and not directly to us.

And so that's what I did.

[Bug 1191426] Re: logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect

2013-06-17 Thread Adam Dingle
I'm not sure whether this is new in Saucy, since I got this MacBook Pro
only after I had upgraded to Saucy.

I tested with the upstream kernel you specified and the behavior is
exactly the same: logging out is very slow, taking perhaps 10 seconds or
more. And once again profiling showed lots of time in
nouveau_conector_detect() - in fact, this time 41.35% of all CPU time
during the entire logout sequence was spent in that function, which
seems way high.

[Bug 1191345] [NEW] all menu items are disabled with GTK 3.9.2

2013-06-15 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

When I run indicator-appmenu with GTK 3.9.2, all menu items are always
disabled. I used git bisect and found that this broke with this GTK
commit:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=a4276a6c7959854e0654791e0cfdcca5b82ec213
===
author Ryan Lortie de...@desrt.ca2013-05-08 12:20:23 (GMT)
commit a4276a6c7959854e0654791e0cfdcca5b82ec213

add GtkMenuTrackerItem

Add a new class, GtkMenuTrackerItem that represents a menu item, to be
used with GtkMenuTracker.

GtkMenuTracker's insert callback now works in terms of this new type
(instead of passing reference to the model and an index to the item).
...
===

Ryan sent the following thoughts about this by email:

===
I have a theory: this patch introduced a major optimisation: it uses the
GtkActionMuxer from the root of the menu rather than forcing an action
muxer into existence for each submenu and menu item.

From what I recall, the way that we insert action groups into the menus
from the unity appmenu indicator is a bit weird. It's done this
way because of how the architecture of the panel is structured -- you're
not actually creating a GtkMenuBar, but rather a list of Indicator
objects which have individual menu items hanging off of them. The code
inside of the panel service is taking a GtkMenuBar constructed by GTK
and ripping it apart and inserting menus into these indicator objects.

Back in the day, this ripping apart was causing problems: the menus lost
linkage with the menubar that defined them and therefore adding action
groups to that menubar itself was a no-go: each menu had to have the
action group added directly.

Now that the individual menu items are now getting their actions
provided to them via the actionmuxer on the main menubar despite any
ripping-apart that we may do later, we probably should just change to
inserting the action groups directly onto the toplevel menubar itself.
I bet doing so would fix this issue (and be an additional optimisation)

TL;DR: you're seeing the unity panel service doing some vaguely
undefined behaviour (modifying a menu created by a binding) and
suffering as a result of it. I think this needs a quick patch in
indicator-appmenu.

[Bug 1191426] [NEW] logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect

2013-06-15 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy) on a MacbookPro9,1, which has both an
Nvidia GeForce GT 650M and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000
controller. I boot with EFI and use the Nouveau driver.

On this machine logging out is slow, taking maybe 10 seconds or so.
'top' shows that the X server process uses lots of CPU during logout. I
ran sysprof and it attributes much of the CPU time to
nouveau_connector_detect, called via the following:

system_call_fastpath [48.98%]
 sys_ioctl [41.90%]
  do_vfs_ioctl [41.87%]
   drm_ioctl [41.47%]
drm_mode_getconnector [34.14%]
 drm_helper_probe_single_connector_modes [34.14%]
  nouveau_connector_detect [28.84%]
  nouveau_connector_detect_lvds [3.83%]
  intel_crt_detect [1.48%]

The percentages above are of the total CPU time used in the shutdown
sequence, so I think several seconds of time is being spent in the path
above. That doesn't seem right.

[Bug 1191426] Re: logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect

2013-06-15 Thread Adam Dingle
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected reproducible saucy ubuntu

** Description changed:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy) on a MacbookPro9,1, which has both an
Nvidia GeForce GT 650M and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000
controller. I boot with EFI and use the Nouveau driver.

On this machine logging out is slow, taking maybe 10 seconds or so.
'top' shows that the X server process uses lots of CPU during logout. I
ran sysprof and it attributes much of the CPU time to
  nouveau_connector_detect, called via the following:

  system_call_fastpath [48.98%]
   sys_ioctl [41.90%]
do_vfs_ioctl [41.87%]
 drm_ioctl [41.47%]
  drm_mode_getconnector [34.14%]
   drm_helper_probe_single_connector_modes [34.14%]
nouveau_connector_detect [28.84%]
nouveau_connector_detect_lvds [3.83%]
intel_crt_detect [1.48%]

- The percentages above are of the total CPU time used in the shutdown
- sequence, so I think several seconds of time is being spent in the path
- above. That doesn't seem right.
+ The percentages above are of the total CPU time used in the shutdown
sequence, so I think several seconds of time is being spent in the path above.

[Bug 1190806] [NEW] X server fails to start on MacBookPro9, 1 with hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics: no screens found

2013-06-13 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I have a MacBookPro9,1, which has both an integrated Intel HD Graphics
4000 controller and a discrete Nvidia GeForce GT 650M. I want to
disable the Nvidia graphics and boot using Intel only, since I don't
need the Nvidia chip's capabilities and it shortens battery life (and
makes suspend/resume not work; see bug #1084960). But when I blacklist
the Nouveau driver and reboot using the Intel driver only, the X server
fails to start: it reports no screens found and crashes.

I'm booting using EFI rather than BIOS; not sure whether that's
relevant.

I'll attach the X server log and the dmesg log. Just let me know if
there's any other information I can provide.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1190806] Re: X server fails to start on MacBookPro9, 1 with hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics: no screens found

2013-06-13 Thread Adam Dingle
Note that in the X log I attached the X server still loads the Nouveau X
driver nouveau_drv.so. As I mentioned I blacklisted the kernel driver,
so I assume that the X driver can't do anything. Still, maybe I should
repeat this experiment with the Nouveau X driver uninstalled.

2013-06-13 Thread Adam Dingle
OK, I uninstalled the Nouveau X driver, blacklisted the Nouveau kernel
driver and rebooted. As I suspected, it made no difference: the X
server still failed to start. I'll attach the Xorg.0.log from this time
around.

[Bug 1189955] [NEW] Abiword menus have items such as gtk-new and gtk-open

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Abiword 2.9.2 on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

Abiword's menus contain a mix of normal-looking menu items (e.g.
File-Page Setup) and menu items named after internal GTK identifiers
(gtk-new, gtk-open and so on). Clearly this is wrong, and is some
sort of app menu problem.

[Bug 1190097] [NEW] Nautilus tries but fails to auto-install applications needed to open files of a given type

2013-06-11 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Nautilus 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

When I double click a file in Nautilus and there is no application
installed which can open the file, Nautilus will try to auto-install an
application but the auto-install hangs. Specifically, for example:

1. Make sure that Gnumeric is not installed on your system.
2. Create a file with extension .gnumeric and double click it in Nautlius.

Nautilus will report:

  Could not display finance.gnumeric.
There is no application installed for Gnumeric spreadsheet files.
Do you want to search for an application to open this file?

Click Yes. You'll now see a dialog that looks like this:

Searching for suitable software to open files
Files requires to install [sic] software to open files of the following file
type: Gnumeric spreadsheet

The dialog has a progress bar, which will briefly pulse and then stop.
You can now only press Cancel.

A glance at the code shows that Nautilus is trying to send a DBus
message to PackageKit to perform the install. There are apparently some
PackageKit components on my system (e.g. libpackagekit-glib2-14 is
installed), but something is not working.

[Bug 990908] Re: Won't honor Do Nothing when Lid is Closed

2013-06-09 Thread Adam Dingle
I see this too. I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy) on a MacBookPro9,1.
In the power settings I have When the lid is closed: Do nothing, but
the machine suspends every time I close the lid. And unfortunately when
I open the lid it can't wake from suspend (see bug #1186818), forcing me
to reboot.

In the current development version of Ubuntu (13.10 Saucy) the power

[Bug 1187203] [NEW] can't set Epiphany as default browser

2013-06-03 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy), which has Epiphany 3.6.1. I have
Epiphany installed on my system and I'd like to set it as default, but
it doesn't show up in the list of browsers to choose from in System
Settings-Details-Default Applications-Web.

The problem is that /usr/share/applications/epiphany.desktop does not
include 'x-scheme-handler/http' in its MimeType list. This MIME type
must appear there in order for the control center to recognize this as a
Web browser. Note that 'x-scheme-handler/http' *does* appear in
epiphany.desktop.in.in in the Epiphany 3.6.1 sources (see
https://git.gnome.org/browse/epiphany/tree/data/epiphany.desktop.in.in?h=gnome-3-6).
So I believe this is an Ubuntu packaging bug.

[Bug 1159430] Re: Nautilus 3.7.92 breaks desktop background on Unity

Dmitry, in your comment who do you mean by you? Was that comment
meant for me, since I posted a link to a branch with some Compiz changes
in comment #20 above? If so, I'll say that I don't think those changes
are ready to be merged into Compiz - they were preliminary and need more
testing and bug fixing. (I mentioned one outstanding issue in that same
comment). They might be a good starting point for someone who wants to
study this more deeply and come up with a solid fix.

2013-06-03 Thread Adam Dingle
It's great to see someone assigned to this bug. What, roughly, is
Ubuntu's plan for solving this in 13.10? Do you plan to ship Nautilus
3.8 in 13.10? If so, who will draw the desktop background - Compiz,
Nautilus, gnome-settings-daemon or some other process? If Compiz, do
you plan to adapt the existing Compiz wallpaper plugin, or write a new
one? Do you plan to adapt the patch I posted above, or take some other
approach?

[Bug 1186509] Re: Upgrade to 3.7 in Saucy to include automake 1.13 detection

I just bumped into this too. Saucy has automake 1.13 but only version
3.6 of gnome-common, which doesn't know about automake versions that
new. So when I run ./autogen.sh in any GNOME source directory, I see
this:

[Bug 1186633] [NEW] gedit find box background should turn red when text is not found

2013-06-01 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

In gedit 3.8.2 in vanilla GNOME with Adwaita, the find box's background
turns red when text is not found. This doesn't happen in Ubuntu with
Ambiance. We probably need to add styling information to Ambiance to
make this happen.

[Bug 1136644] Re: gedit search function is not practical anymore

2013-06-01 Thread Adam Dingle
As described in the gedit help at https://help.gnome.org/users/gedit/3.8
/gedit-search.html.en :

- You can press Enter to cancel a search and retain the current cursor
position. (This behavior is admittedly not consistent with other GNOME
applications; see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699658 for
a request to change this.)

- Right click the magnifying glass icon or the search text to get to
search options (match case, match whole world, wrap around).

I'm marking this bug as invalid because it mentions several different
issues, some of which were due to not understanding gedit's current
interface. Feel free to open up new bugs for individual specific
issues.

[Bug 1184340] [NEW] hb-icu.h is missing from libharfbuzz-dev

2013-05-26 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

Debian just made a change to disable ICU support in the harfbuzz
package:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=709796

http://ftp-
master.metadata.debian.org/changelogs//main/h/harfbuzz/harfbuzz_0.9.17-3_changelog

This means that libharfbuzz-dev no longer includes hb-icu.h.
Unfortunately that file appears to be required for building recent
versions of WebKit. I just built WebKitGTK 2.0.2, and had to build
harfbuzz from source in order for the WebKit build to work.

[Bug 1184363] [NEW] Default Applications offers only Firefox even though Epiphany is also installed

2013-05-26 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

I have both Firefox and Epiphany (the epiphany-browser package)

[Bug 1184363] Re: Default Applications offers only Firefox even though Epiphany is also installed

2013-05-26 Thread Adam Dingle
I investigated. All that's going on here is that Saucy still has
Epiphany 3.6, whose .desktop file doesn't mention x-scheme-handler/http,
which is currently necessary for gnome-control-center to recogize an
application as a Web browser. Epiphany 3.8's .desktop file does include
this MIME type, so the problem will go away when Saucy updates to
Epiphany 3.8 (which I hope will happen soon). So this is not a gnome-
control-center bug. Marking invalid.

[Bug 1184173] [NEW] dash opens erroneously when I quickly type a shortcut including Super key

2013-05-25 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy).

To see the problem:

1. Use the Keyboard-Shortcuts control panel to assign a shortcut including
Super to any application. For example, I assigned Super+L to the Calculator
app.
2. Return to the desktop and type the shortcut quickly (pressing and releasing
both keys within, say, a tenth of a second).

The dash will open (and the application you assigned the key to will
appear behind it). If you type the shortcut more slowly, the dash
doesn't appear.

Clearly the dash should not open unless I press the Super key by itself.

[Bug 946095] Re: font not visible in terminal plugin

2013-05-19 Thread Adam Dingle
I investigated since I wanted to understand what was going on here. I
thought this was probably an Ambiance-related theme issue, but I was
wrong. (I've also posted the following explanation at the upstream
ticket at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694598 .)

Back in GNOME 2.32, both gedit and gnome-terminal stored settings in GConf. At
that time the gedit terminal plugin looked at gnome-terminal's GConf settings
to read the default profile information to find out what colors to use. You
can see that code here:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/gedit-
plugins/tree/plugins/terminal/terminal.py?h=gnome-2-32

Then in GNOME 3.0 gedit ported over to GSettings, but gnome-terminal was still
using GConf. The terminal plugin could no longer easily look at the
gnome-terminal profile info, so the terminal plugin just started using the
default colors from the VTE terminal widget (which look poor, hence this bug).
At that time the terminal plugin code added this FIXME line:

   def get_profile_settings(self):
#FIXME return either the gnome-terminal settings or the gedit one
return Gio.Settings.new(org.gnome.gedit.plugins.terminal)

Now, finally, in GNOME 3.8 gnome-terminal has been ported to use
GSettings:

  https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-terminal/tree/NEWS?h=gnome-3-8

So it should now be possible to fix this bug by having the terminal
plugin read profile information from GSettings.

[Bug 655998] Re: Update Manager Listing should NOT use descriptions

2013-05-08 Thread Adam Dingle
These days Update Manager displays only short descriptions of packages
to be upgraded - the only way I can find out the actual package names is
by looking in the Technical description area below. The
summary_before_name GSettings key apparently no longer has any effect.

That might be OK for casual users (although Graham gives a good argument
above that these descriptions aren't terribly useful for them either).
But a serious user would really like to see the actual package names. I
think there should be a preference, command-line parameter or GSettings
key which causes Update Manager to show actual package names in the main
list (possibly with descriptions too).

I don't think so. The screenshot in that bug shows just a couple of

Also, that bug describes lines which stay on the screen for a long time
(even across reboots!), where in my case they only flicker on screen
briefly.

[Bug 1177358] [NEW] black line garbage flickers onto screen every few minutes

2013-05-07 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 on a MacBookAir5,2. The machine has an Intel
HD Graphics 4000 processor.

Every few minutes, a bunch of garbage blank lines flickers onto the
screen for a fraction of a second and then vanishes. I also saw this
running 13.04 on the same machine, but never before that. It's
impossible for me to capture a screenshot since it's completely
unpredictable when this will happen. But it's pretty distracting.

[Bug 1177358] Re: black line garbage flickers onto screen every few minutes

2013-05-07 Thread Adam Dingle
I've modified my X configuration to use UXA rather than SNA. Maybe that
will fix the problem - I'll post here soon with an update.

2013-05-07 Thread Adam Dingle
OK, I can do that. I haven't seen the garbage since switching to UXA
(though it's only been a few minutes). Should I go back to SNA for the
debugging step you've suggested?

I just saw the garbage flash when running with UXA.

[Bug 1177555] [NEW] [needs-packaging] libgit2-glib

2013-05-07 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

libgit2-glib is a glib wrapper library around the libgit2 git access
library. It's needed for building gitg from git master and will be
required by upcoming releases of gitg.

URL: https://live.gnome.org/Libgit2-glib
License: LGPL 2.1 or higher

It would be great to have this library available in Saucy. Thanks!

[Bug 1177560] [NEW] libgit2-dev should depend on libssl-dev

2013-05-07 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

libgit2.pc contains this line:

[Bug 676315] Re: Menu item mnemonics do not appear on characters with descenders

2013-05-06 Thread Adam Dingle
I agree that this seems to be solved now. On 13.04, I can clearly see
an underline under the mnemonic Q for File-Quit in gedit, for example.

[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find

2013-05-02 Thread Adam Dingle
One more point. When the Nautilus designers replaced type-ahead find with
search-as-you-type, their intention was that searching as you type would be
really fast because Nautilus would use Tracker to search. See, for example,
the comment https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118#c4 : Nautilus
will build with a Tracker dependency by default unless
--disable-tracker is used. That is strongly not recommended. Search is going to
kind of suck without it.

Because Ubuntu does not use Tracker, searching as you type in Nautilus
is especially painful on Ubuntu, and so the removal of type-ahead find
affects Ubuntu users especially acutely.

So in Ubuntu we could enable Tracker, which would alleviate the problem
somewhat, and/or patch type-ahead find back in. I lean toward the
patch: it's probably really easy. But I agree with Alfredo that finding
some solution to this should have more than a Low importance.
