[Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find
Sebastien, thanks for your comment - it's nice to know that someone at Ubuntu is paying attention to this thread. I don't think forking an old version of Nautilus is practical. The problem is that it would be a ton of work to keep such a fork compatible with new versions of GTK, GLib and other libraries. Instead I think the current version of Nautilus (3.8 in Saucy) should be patched to fix this. Removing type-ahead find has been controversial upstream (i.e. at GNOME) - see, for example, the discussions at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=699087 Nevertheless I think it's very unlikely that the GNOME developers will fix this for 3.10, or possibly ever. Even if they were to fix this in, say, Nautilus 3.12 next spring, that version won't appear in Ubuntu until late 2014 (since Ubuntu lags GNOME by a release cycle). So if this going to be fixed in Ubuntu in the near future, I think Ubuntu will need to take responsibility for doing that. You may not like that - sure, in an ideal world this would be discussed rationally and fixed upstream - but this is how it is. You wrote not sure that's a problem that can easily by fixed by Ubuntu. I guess that depends on what you mean by easily. I'm quite confident that a competent hacker could come up with a patch to the current Nautilus that restores type-ahead find in, say, 2-3 weeks. It might even be easier. I'd start by attempting to git revert the commit where this breakage was introduced: https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=469eb89117e199a450aec3411183ed2e9f10f893 That will yield merge conflicts, which must be studied and resolved in some nice way. This might not be solvable in a day, but I'd be very surprised if this took more than a month of work. To those of us on the outside, it's baffling that Ubuntu would not want to invest that amount of effort to solve this, since this is a highly visible core program on the Ubuntu desktop and it seems pretty evident that the majority of users are harmed by this. Has someone at Ubuntu already spent several weeks working on this and concluded it was too difficult? Or does Ubuntu not feel it would be worth that amount of effort? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1164016 Title: restore type-ahead find To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/1164016/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1018718] Re: columns width redrawn by multiple events
I see this too with Nautilus 3.6.3 in Saucy. I can reliably reproduce this bug like this: 1. Start Nautilus. 2. Go to the /etc folder in list view. On a typical machine this directory will have a few hundred files. 3. Make sure you're displaying the default set of columns (Name, Size, Type, Modified). 4. Now move the window, or resize it, or right click on any file to open a context menu. The columns will jump around. I originally filed this upstream at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=698970, but then I realized I could reproduce this only in Ambiance, not Adwaita. [Bug 1191426] Re: logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect
Joseph, I'm not convinced that a kernel bug report would be appropriate here. As I've pointed out, a surprising amount of CPU time is being spent in nouveau_connector_detect which is presumably in the Nouveau kernel driver. The Nouveau project tracks its bugs separately from the Linux kernel; see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/. I thought about filing this at Nouveau, but that Web page says If you are using packages from your distribution, send the bug reports to your distribution and not directly to us. [Bug 1191426] Re: logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect
I'm not sure whether this is new in Saucy, since I got this MacBook Pro only after I had upgraded to Saucy. I tested with the upstream kernel you specified and the behavior is exactly the same: logging out is very slow, taking perhaps 10 seconds or more. And once again profiling showed lots of time in nouveau_conector_detect() - in fact, this time 41.35% of all CPU time during the entire logout sequence was spent in that function, which seems way high. ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1191426 Title: logout is slow, profiling reveals lots of CPU time in nouveau_connector_detect To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1191426/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1191345] [NEW] all menu items are disabled with GTK 3.9.2
Public bug reported: When I run indicator-appmenu with GTK 3.9.2, all menu items are always disabled. I used git bisect and found that this broke with this GTK commit: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=a4276a6c7959854e0654791e0cfdcca5b82ec213 === author Ryan Lortie de...@desrt.ca2013-05-08 12:20:23 (GMT) commit a4276a6c7959854e0654791e0cfdcca5b82ec213 add GtkMenuTrackerItem Add a new class, GtkMenuTrackerItem that represents a menu item, to be used with GtkMenuTracker. GtkMenuTracker's insert callback now works in terms of this new type (instead of passing reference to the model and an index to the item). ... === Ryan sent the following thoughts about this by email: === I have a theory: this patch introduced a major optimisation: it uses the GtkActionMuxer from the root of the menu rather than forcing an action muxer into existence for each submenu and menu item. From what I recall, the way that we insert action groups into the menus from the unity appmenu indicator is a bit weird. It's done this way because of how the architecture of the panel is structured -- you're not actually creating a GtkMenuBar, but rather a list of Indicator objects which have individual menu items hanging off of them. The code inside of the panel service is taking a GtkMenuBar constructed by GTK and ripping it apart and inserting menus into these indicator objects. Back in the day, this ripping apart was causing problems: the menus lost linkage with the menubar that defined them and therefore adding action groups to that menubar itself was a no-go: each menu had to have the action group added directly. Now that the individual menu items are now getting their actions provided to them via the actionmuxer on the main menubar despite any ripping-apart that we may do later, we probably should just change to inserting the action groups directly onto the toplevel menubar itself. I bet doing so would fix this issue (and be an additional optimisation) TL;DR: you're seeing the unity panel service doing some vaguely undefined behaviour (modifying a menu created by a binding) and suffering as a result of it. I think this needs a quick patch in indicator-appmenu. === ** Affects: indicator-appmenu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: indicator-appmenu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: indicator-appmenu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1191345 Title: all menu items are disabled with GTK 3.9.2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-appmenu/+bug/1191345/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1190806] [NEW] X server fails to start on MacBookPro9, 1 with hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics: no screens found
Public bug reported: I have a MacBookPro9,1, which has both an integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 controller and a discrete Nvidia GeForce GT 650M. I want to disable the Nvidia graphics and boot using Intel only, since I don't need the Nvidia chip's capabilities and it shortens battery life (and makes suspend/resume not work; see bug #1084960). But when I blacklist the Nouveau driver and reboot using the Intel driver only, the X server fails to start: it reports no screens found and crashes. I'm booting using EFI rather than BIOS; not sure whether that's relevant. I'll attach the X server log and the dmesg log. Just let me know if there's any other information I can provide. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1190806 Title: X server fails to start on MacBookPro9,1 with hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics: no screens found To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1190806/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1190806] Re: X server fails to start on MacBookPro9, 1 with hybrid Intel/Nvidia graphics: no screens found
Note that in the X log I attached the X server still loads the Nouveau X driver nouveau_drv.so. As I mentioned I blacklisted the kernel driver, so I assume that the X driver can't do anything. [Bug 1190097] [NEW] Nautilus tries but fails to auto-install applications needed to open files of a given type
Public bug reported: I'm running Nautilus 3.6.3 on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy). When I double click a file in Nautilus and there is no application installed which can open the file, Nautilus will try to auto-install an application but the auto-install hangs. Specifically, for example: 1. Make sure that Gnumeric is not installed on your system. 2. Create a file with extension .gnumeric and double click it in Nautlius. Nautilus will report:   Could not display finance.gnumeric.   There is no application installed for Gnumeric spreadsheet files.   Do you want to search for an application to open this file? You'll now see a dialog that looks like this:   Searching for suitable software to open files   Files requires to install [sic] software to open files of the following file type: Gnumeric spreadsheet The dialog has a progress bar, which will briefly pulse and then stop. You can now only press Cancel. A glance at the code shows that Nautilus is trying to send a DBus message to PackageKit to perform the install. [Bug 1187203] [NEW] can't set Epiphany as default browser
Public bug reported: I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy), which has Epiphany 3.6.1. I have Epiphany installed on my system and I'd like to set it as default, but it doesn't show up in the list of browsers to choose from in System Settings-Details-Default Applications-Web. The problem is that /usr/share/applications/epiphany.desktop does not include 'x-scheme-handler/http' in its MimeType list. [Bug 1184363] Re: Default Applications offers only Firefox even though Epiphany is also installed
I investigated. All that's going on here is that Saucy still has Epiphany 3.6, whose .desktop file doesn't mention x-scheme-handler/http, which is currently necessary for gnome-control-center to recogize an application as a Web browser. Epiphany 3.8's .desktop file does include this MIME type, so the problem will go away when Saucy updates to Epiphany 3.8 (which I hope will happen soon). So this is not a gnome- control-center bug. [Bug 946095] Re: font not visible in terminal plugin
I investigated since I wanted to understand what was going on here. I thought this was probably an Ambiance-related theme issue, but I was wrong. (I've also posted the following explanation at the upstream ticket at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=694598 .) Back in GNOME 2.32, both gedit and gnome-terminal stored settings in GConf. At that time the gedit terminal plugin looked at gnome-terminal's GConf settings to read the default profile information to find out what colors to use. You can see that code here: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gedit- plugins/tree/plugins/terminal/terminal.py?h=gnome-2-32 Then in GNOME 3.0 gedit ported over to GSettings, but gnome-terminal was still using GConf. The terminal plugin could no longer easily look at the gnome-terminal profile info, so the terminal plugin just started using the default colors from the VTE terminal widget (which look poor, hence this bug). At that time the terminal plugin code added this FIXME line: def get_profile_settings(self): #FIXME return either the gnome-terminal settings or the gedit one return Gio.Settings.new(org.gnome.gedit.plugins.terminal) Now, finally, in GNOME 3.8 gnome-terminal has been ported to use GSettings: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-terminal/tree/NEWS?h=gnome-3-8 So it should now be possible to fix this bug by having the terminal plugin read profile information from GSettings. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/946095 Title: font not visible in terminal plugin To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gedit/+bug/946095/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 655998] Re: Update Manager Listing should NOT use descriptions
These days Update Manager displays only short descriptions of packages to be upgraded - the only way I can find out the actual package names is by looking in the Technical description area below. The summary_before_name GSettings key apparently no longer has any effect. That might be OK for casual users (although Graham gives a good argument above that these descriptions aren't terribly useful for them either). But a serious user would really like to see the actual package names. I think there should be a preference, command-line parameter or GSettings key which causes Update Manager to show actual package names in the main list (possibly with descriptions too). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/655998 Title: Update Manager Listing should NOT use descriptions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/655998/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1177358] Re: black line garbage flickers onto screen every few minutes
I don't think so. [Bug 1164016] Re: restore type-ahead find
One more point. When the Nautilus designers replaced type-ahead find with search-as-you-type, their intention was that searching as you type would be really fast because Nautilus would use Tracker to search. See, for example, the comment https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118#c4 : Nautilus will build with a Tracker dependency by default unless --disable-tracker is used. That is strongly not recommended. Search is going to kind of suck without it. Because Ubuntu does not use Tracker, searching as you type in Nautilus is especially painful on Ubuntu, and so the removal of type-ahead find affects Ubuntu users especially acutely. So in Ubuntu we could enable Tracker, which would alleviate the problem somewhat, and/or patch type-ahead find back in. I lean toward the patch: it's probably really easy. But I agree with Alfredo that finding some solution to this should have more than a Low importance. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #680118 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680118 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1164016 Title: restore type-ahead find To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1164016/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
