[Bug 853373] Re: does not import RW2 raw-images

2012-02-22 Thread Adam Dingle
Romano,

the gphoto bug has been fixed in the latest libgphoto, version 2.4.12.
That version is not yet available in Ubuntu Precise, but should appear
there soon. We're still not completely sure whether that will solve the
RW2 problem in Shotwell, however; see
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3428 for details.

What, specifically, do you feel is dangerous? It looks like you
imported photos from a folder and expected Shotwell to copy them, but
they stayed in place. That has nothing to do with RW2, so if you're
concerned about that behavior in Shotwell you should open a separate bug
to discuss it.

[Bug 924587] [NEW] libraw-dev should depend on liblcms2-dev

2012-01-31 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

In Precise, libraw5 depends on liblcms2-2. If I install libraw-dev
without liblcms2-dev, then 'pkg-config --libs libraw' fails:

Package lcms2 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `lcms2.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
Package 'lcms2', required by 'libraw', not found

And that in turn causes the Shotwell build to fail.

So I believe that libraw-dev should depend on liblcms2-dev.

[Bug 915087] [NEW] critical assertion: GDK_IS_WINDOW(window) failed

2012-01-11 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Nemiver 0.9.1 on Ubuntu Precise (12.04) alpha.

Every time I launch an application for debugging from within Nemiver, I
get this critical assertion:

Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_get_pointer: assertion `GDK_IS_WINDOW
(window)' failed

This behavior is specific to Ubuntu; I don't see the assertion when I
run the same version of Nemiver on Fedora, for instance.

I've seen similar assertions when running various GNOME programs under
Unity. In this case, though, the assertion is harmful - here's why. I
sometimes want to run a debugged program with G_DEBUG=fatal-criticals so
that it will break into the debugger when it hits a critical assertion
of its own. Unfortunately, if I set G_DEBUG=fatal-criticals, then
Nemiver itself will generate the assertion above and abort, preventing
me from debugging.

[Bug 908640] Re: doesnt recognize vertical movie clips, it leave them orizzontal

2011-12-27 Thread Adam Dingle
Thanks for the sample video. Both Totem and VLC behave the same way as
Shotwell: they play the movie in an horizontal orientation. It's not
clear whether the video contains any information that would allow a
program to determine its proper orientation. Are you aware of any
program which will play it vertically?

what kind of camera do you have? Does this problem happen after every

[Bug 797117] Re: Import of photos to be COPIED does not work correctly

2011-12-19 Thread Adam Dingle
The bugs are not the same. This bug (797117) does not involve missing
photos, and as I explained in comment #6 it's not actually a bug
according to the Shotwell designers. It's simply how Shotwell works,
though we could possibly display more helpful messages to explain what's
going on (as proposed in http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4502).

Bug #813191 involves missing photos. It's a tricky edge case, and
Shotwell's current behavior is possibly not ideal. The corresponding
upstream ticket is http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3875 .

[Bug 797117] Re: Import of photos to be COPIED does not work correctly

2011-12-16 Thread Adam Dingle
Daisy,

first, to be clear, there are no symbolic links involved in this
situation. Shotwell simply imports the photos in question into its
database in their current filesystem locations. (Shotwell will never,
in fact, create a symbolic link). In earlier versions of Shotwell we
referred to this behavior as linking, but people found that confusing
so we now call it importing in place.

I can understand that it may not have been obvious why the copy/no copy
dialog didn't appear for you. I've created a ticket upstream
(http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4502) for possibly displaying a dialog
as you suggest. Also, I think that before long we may display a set of
options on every import, and once we're doing that we could simply
disable the copy option in this situation; that might make things a
little clearer.

[Bug 898028] Re: assertion failed in hash_timed_queue_removed while importing photos from F-Spot

2011-12-01 Thread Adam Dingle
Alex,

there are a couple of things you can helpfully do:

1. Enable logging. To do this, run SHOTWELL_LOG=1 shotwell from a
command prompt. As Shotwell runs, it will write a log file to
~/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log.

2. Run Shotwell under GDB. That way when Shotwell crashes you'll get a
stack trace, which could be helpful. See

[Bug 797117] Re: Import of photos to be COPIED does not work correctly

2011-11-29 Thread Adam Dingle
This behavior is expected if the photos you're importing are already in
the library directory: in that case Shotwell won't copy them (and, in
recent versions of Shotwell, won't ask you whether you want the photos
copied). So if Shotwell doesn't seem to be copying your photos, you
should check your library directory setting in Shotwell's Preferences
dialog. Perhaps it's mistakenly set to your home directory, in which
case Shotwell will never copy photos imported from your home directory
or any of its subdirectories.

Also: this bug has been reported upstream at
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1940, and has already been reported in
Launchpad as bug #696138. If you're looking for a workaround, then
instead of filing a duplicate bug report it would be better to ask for
help on the mailing list and/or post a comment to the existing bug
entry.

So this bug was originally a duplicate, but we can keep it open while we
investigate the behavior you described in comment #2.

Thanks for the bug report. Could you generate a log file and attach it

After the metadata writing hangs, exit Shotwell. Then find the file

[Bug 890379] [NEW] build using lcms2

2011-11-14 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

libraw currently builds and links to liblcms1. There's an effort
underway to completely replace lcms1 with lcms2 in Ubuntu (see bug

[Bug 845174] Re: Second monitor doesn't work on MacBookAir3, 1 with nvidia-current driver

2011-11-09 Thread Adam Dingle
To chime in here, as I mentioned above I have a newer Macbook (a
MacBook7,1) and am still seeing this behavior running Oneiric with all
the latest updates. More specifically:

1. I start my laptop with an external monitor connected. After I log in, the
external monitor is still blank.
2. I run nvidia-settings and select X Server Display Configuration on the left.
nvidia-settings shows both the laptop display and the external monitor. I
select the external monitor and choose Configuration: TwinView.
3. I press Apply. The laptop display flashes briefly, but nothing else
changes. The external monitor is still blank.
4. I press Apply a second time. Now I briefly see garbage on both displays.
After a few seconds it goes away, and I see a dialog box on the external
monitor asking me whether I want to accept the display change. I click OK.
5. Unfortunately, at this point Unity is no longer running (the sidebar and
panel have vanished) and so I can't run any programs. I have to switch to a
different terminal console and reboot.

As a result, I can't use an external monitor with Ubuntu on this
Macbook.

2011-11-03 Thread Adam Dingle
Till: Yes, there really is a libraw. :) You're not seeing it because
on Ubuntu Shotwell is built using libraw as a static library, so libraw
is compiled into the Shotwell executable. It would be nice to use a
shared library instead, but we can't do that at the moment because
libraw.so currently lives inside libraw-dev, which we can't expect end
users to install. Instead, libraw.so should be broken out into a
separate package. I've created a separate Launchpad ticket for this
issue: #885645.

[Bug 885324] Re: Completely replace lcms1 by lcms2 in Ubuntu

2011-11-02 Thread Adam Dingle
Shotwell itself does not use lcms; it uses libraw, which depends on
lcms1 in Ubuntu. Note that libraw 0.13.8 (present in Oneiric) can build
using either lcms1 or lcms2. So to solve this particular dependency I
suspect that you only need to update your libraw packaging to build
using lcms2. You might also consider updating Precise to the latest
libraw (0.14.3) while you're at it.

[Bug 871034] Re: need packaging whit gtk3

2011-10-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Note that the latest release of Shotwell (0.11) builds only with GTK 2.
The next release (0.12) will appear in early 2012, and will support GTK
3. In the meantime, we'd like to have a daily build of the current
trunk, which does already support GTK 3. We're working on that:

[Bug 824062] [NEW] tool windows don't refresh properly when window moved or resized

2011-08-10 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

1. Open any photo in full-window mode.

2. Open any editing tool (such as Crop).

3. Move or resize the main Shotwell window.

the main window but will not refresh properly.

[Bug 822924] Re: Changing directory structure does not do anything

2011-08-09 Thread Adam Dingle
John,

the tree view in the side panel does not correspond to the directory
hierarchy on disk. Instead, the side panel displays your events
arranged by year and month. This is completely independent of the on-
disk hierarchy: even if all your photos are all in the same directory,
for example, the side panel will display events by year and month. The
option you mentioned affects only the on-disk structure.

This is all by design. We are, however, considering adding a folder
tree to the sidebar in the future (see
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1594).

[Bug 822924] Re: Changing directory structure does not do anything

Well, your original post said directory structure. A directory is an
on-disk entity, and so the sidebar tree has nothing to do with the
directory structure. Probably this is what you found confusing.

[Bug 822924] Re: Changing preferences for side panel structure does not do anything

2011-08-09 Thread Adam Dingle
To make things even more clear, here are answers to each of your
questions in #11:

- if there are no preferences for the events, then how come the events
tree represents exactly the Year/Month/Day structure?

It's purely a coincidence that the event tree hierarchy happens to be
similar to the directory hierarchy which Shotwell uses by default. They
are not tied together in any way.

- if the dropdown menu in the prefs IS supposed to change the events
tree (which I suspect it is supposed to do), then how is calling it
directory structure correct?

The dropdown menu in the prefs is *not* supposed to change the event
tree in any way. Its name is correct since it affects only the on-disk
directory structure.

- if whats in the prefs is correct, changing Directory structure
should change the directory structure on the disk, which is does not and
is certainly neither what it is supposed to do nor what I want it to do

Changing the directory structure preference affects only the locations
of photos which you import *after* you change this preference. It has
no effect on the locations of photos which you have already imported.
As Jim mentioned back in comment #3, we'd like to enhance Shotwell to be
able to rearrange your existing photo files into a new directory
structure, but it can't do that yet.

[Bug 821915] Re: shotwell drag photo or video to pitivi does not work

2011-08-07 Thread Adam Dingle
Vincent,

If we want this sort of drag and drop to work, Shotwell will need to
keep an on-disk copy of each photo including all edits the user has
made. Today, Shotwell only keeps the originals on disk, and applies the
user's edits on the fly each time the user opens a photo. As a
result, fixing this will be a large change to Shotwell. (See
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1798.) It certainly won't happen for
the upcoming 0.11 release. Perhaps we'll be able to implement this for
0.12 or 0.13 depending on other priorities.

[Bug 812712] Re: Can't get normal modal dialog size

2011-08-05 Thread Adam Dingle
I was just burned by this too. In Thunderbird, I installed an add-on
called Zindus. I opened the Zindus Configuration Settings dialog, then
pressed Add to add an account. Compiz forced the resulting New Account
dialog to fit inside the parent Configuration Settings dialog and
wouldn't let me resize it. I had no idea how to fix the problem, and
only when I read this ticket did I realize that if I made the parent
dialog larger then the child dialog would appear large enough.

I think this behavior is absolutely a bug.

I'm seeing this too in the current Oneiric build. I'm running on a

[Bug 807627] [NEW] URL is unreadable while page is loading

2011-07-08 Thread Adam Dingle
Public bug reported:

I'm running Epiphany 3.0.3 on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) using the default
theme.

Normally, the URL in the URL bar appears black on a light gray background and
is easy to read. While a page is loading, however, the URL is in white text on
a light gray background and is virtually impossible to read. This seems odd,
and harms usability: even while a page is loading, I might want to know its URL
so I can be sure that I've ended up where I wanted to go.

I've attached a screenshot.

I originally reported this bug to the Epiphany team at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=654133 , but they believe
it's actually an Ubuntu bug, specifically with the default Ambiance
theme in Ubuntu.

[Bug 797941] Re: shotwell prints filename on all photos

2011-06-17 Thread Adam Dingle
Shotwell's search capability does not current match the names of folders
that pictures are in. This might be a reasonable idea, though I have
some concern that it might yield mysterious matches for some users.
Feel free to file a ticket at trac.yorba.org if you'd like us to
consider this for a future release. Note that searching in Shotwell
*does* match tag names. So in the example you gave above, you don't
actually have to rename each individual picture: instead, you can tag
all those pictures with oliver. Today, when you import photos into
Shotwell it doesn't pay attention to the folder hierarchy containing
those photos, though some users would like us to derive events
automatically from that hierarchy; see http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2108
. That might also solve your problem, since Shotwell searches do match
event names.

Shotwell does have a plugin system but today it can only be used to add
publishing destinations and new slideshow transitions, not filters or
effects. It would be nice if Shotwell's plugins allowed arbitrary photo
transformations, but we're not there yet. See
http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/3440 .

[Bug 797941] Re: shotwell prints filename on all photos

2011-06-15 Thread Adam Dingle
It is actually possible to turn off this behavior. In the Image
Settings tab in the Print dialog, uncheck the box Print image title.

(The fact that the titles overlap the images is a known bug; see
http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/3249 .)

[Bug 793375] Re: Crashes during load, starting shotweel on command line gives the following...: data corrupted at 3662724

2011-06-06 Thread Adam Dingle
David,

you're running a fairly old version of Shotwell. Can you try upgrading
to the latest release (0.10) and let us know whether the crash still
occurs? See http://yorba.org/shotwell/install/ .

[Bug 769940] Re: authenticate and authorize webviews for flickr does not accept mouse clicks for form submit actions/buttons

2011-05-27 Thread Adam Dingle
Endomancer,

we fixed this bug in Shotwell 0.10, which was released just yesterday.
I suggest you upgrade to 0.10. The Shotwell web site will tell you how
to do that:

[Bug 784753] Re: second crop undoes the first

2011-05-19 Thread Adam Dingle
Avi,

I'm not sure I understand, In what sense does the second crop operation
undo the first? When I follow your steps to reproduce, then when I
click 'crop' for the second time, Shotwell displays the crop rectangle I
chose when I first cropped the image. In other words, after I press
'crop' the second time, the display looks *exactly* the same as it did
right before I pressed OK when cropping the first time. Are you seeing
different behavior?

As Vera pointed out, you can't crop while zoomed yet, though I'm not
sure that's what you're complaining about - or is it?

[Bug 784753] Re: second crop undoes the first

2011-05-19 Thread Adam Dingle
Thanks for the screencast. The behavior in the screencast is expected
and is how cropping is intended to work: when you press Crop the second
time, Shotwell once again displays the entire image and displays the
crop rectangle you chose the first time so that you can adjust it as you
like. It's still not clear to me how you'd like it to behave
differently - can you explain?
