[Bug 1915674] Re: Sharing folder in Files: "net usershare" returned error 255

2021-02-15 Thread Chow Loong Jin
I see that the feature that it seems to conflict with is the `[homes]`
section in /etc/samba/smb.conf (which makes it so that every user's home
directory is exported as a share), so maybe commenting out that whole
section and restarting samba might do the trick.

See https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/current/man-html/smb.conf.5.html
for more information about this.

Well it sounds like you can't have a share with the same name as a
username, and there's a `games` user in Ubuntu by default. Pick another
share name perhaps?

[Bug 1897540] [NEW] Fan speed status stuck at last non-zero value when fan drops to 0 RPM

2020-09-28 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Public bug reported:

On the System76 Lemur Pro, the fan rgularly turns off at lower
temperatures (anything below 60°C), and `sensors` reports 0 RPM.

When this happens, the fan speed status in tmux gets stuck at the last
non-zero value. Looking in /dev/shm/byobu-*-*/status.tmux/, I see a
`fan_speed` file that says 3161 RPM and a `fan_speed.new` file that is
empty.

2018-05-02 Thread Chow Loong Jin
There's a PR[1] to port some of the plugins over to webkit2gtk, but it
hasn't been merged yet and now that Bionic's released, we're not going
to see the plugins reenabled for this Ubuntu release. :(

They'll eventually be reenabled in the PPA[2] once the PR is merged
though, so stay tuned.

[Bug 1753655] [NEW] fwupd doesn't release hidraw devices

2018-03-05 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Public bug reported:

fwupd doesn't release hidraw devices for unplugged peripherals, causing
the kernel to keep allocating new hidraw devices until it hits
HIDRAW_MAX_DEVICES.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Ensure that fwupd.service is running
2. Plug in a Logitech Unifying Receiver (or any other thing that creates a
hidraw device that fwupd recognizes)
3. Unplug it.
4. Repeat 2 and 3, and note that the allocated hidraw device number keeps
increasing.
5. HIDRAW_MAX_DEVICES=64, so after /dev/hidraw64 is hit, no new hidraw devices
can be allocated until fwupd is restarted
6. Check the list of hidraw devices being held by fwupd:

% sudo lsof -p $(pidof fwupd) -n | grep hidraw

7. Restart fwupd.service.
8. Note that the newly created /dev/hidraw device is now back to a small number.

It works in GNOME Shell (and the code for this plugin hasn't changed in
years), so I think it's related to the way unity uses its own settings

[Bug 1573577] Re: QR code image does not generate after upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04

2017-12-14 Thread Chow Loong Jin
** Description changed:

+ === Begin SRU Boilerplate for Ubuntu ===
+
+ [Impact]
+ python-qrencode is currently broken for all users in xenial due to the
removal of Image.fromstring from pillow. The fix is to replace all calls to
Image.fromstring with Image.frombytes.
+
+ qreator is also affected similarly in xenial, and requires a fix to
+ switch the usage of PIL.Image.Image.tostring() with
+ PIL.Image.Image.tobytes()
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Run the following script and see if it ends in an exception:
+
+ ```
+ import qrencode
+ qrencode.encode_scaled("foo", 1)
+ ```
+
+ In the case of qreator:
+ 1. Launch Qreator after installing both the fixed qreator and python-qrencode
packages.
+ 2. Create a QR code
+ 3. Verify that the QR code is displayed.
+ 4. Save the QR code
+ 5. Verify that the QR code was saved correctly.
+
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ It's unlikely that python-qrencode can regress any further, because in its
current state, both exported python methods are completely broken and will
throw an exception unconditionally with the pillow version in Xenial.
+
+
+ [Other Info]
+ rdeps may also be broken if they use Image.tostring on the output. So far,
the only known rdep that is broken is qreator.

+ qrencode.

Hmm, as far as I can tell, Qreator 16.06.1-1 and python-qrencode 1.2-1
are no longer affected by this bug. This means that it should be fixed
in Ubuntu Zesty (17.04) upwards. I guess that leaves.. Xenial?

The key repeat runaway also happens occasionally in urxvt when the CPU
is sufficiently loaded, but can be recovered by hitting the key in
question again, and doesn't lead to GNOME Shell hanging.

[Bug 1731420] [NEW] gnome-shell hangs (goes into key repeat runaway) when key repeat is used on chromium-browser's address bar

2017-11-10 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Public bug reported:

GNOME Shell running in Wayland completely hangs when the key repeat rate
is sufficiently high and used inside Chromium and/or Google Chrome. Then
GNOME Shell, at-spi's dbus-daemon, ibus-daemon, and chromium-browser all
get stuck at 100% CPU. GNOME Shell's RSS also quickly increases to >2GB
and continues climbing.

Attempting to kill chromium-browser in a separate TTY either causes one of two
things:
 - gnome-shell, dbus-daemon and ibus-daemon remain at 100% CPU and stuck; or
 - gnome-shell temporarily recovers, then crashes, taking the entire session
with it and returning to the login screen.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Set key repeat rates to a high value (these are my actual settings):

$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard repeat-interval 3
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard repeat true
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard delay 180

2. Start chromium-browser
3. Focus the location bar in chromium-browser
4. Press and hold a key (e.g. a) for a few seconds (~10 should do)
5. Observe that gnome-shell probably has hung by this point. If it hasn't,
proceed to step 6.
6. Press and hold the backspace button until the location bar has cleared, then
continue for another few seconds (~10 seconds should do)

This also affected GNOME Shell 3.24, but I was able to reduce the chances of it
happening by renicing my chromium processes to +10, thereby giving GNOME Shell
a greater chance at the CPU.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 17.10
Package: gnome-shell 3.26.1-0ubuntu5

I don't think this is a nautilus-share bug as nautilus-share is for creating
samba shares of local folders and has nothing to do with sftp mounts.

Could you obtain a stack trace of nautilus to identify the real reason for the
crash?

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash for more information.

[Bug 1719287] [NEW] libnss-resolve causes gnome-shell to hang when there's a high rate of getaddrinfo() calls

2017-09-25 Thread Chow Loong Jin
Public bug reported:

I've been running a locust[1]-based web load test on my Ubuntu machine
running GNOME Shell (wayland). When starting a new test with a client
spawn rate of ~500/s, it issues a huge amount of getaddrinfo() calls.
When using libnss-resolve, this causes a huge number of NameOwnerChanged
events on the system bus:

signal time=1506335482.865950 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null
destination) serial=227290 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus;
interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.190697"
   string ""
   string ":1.190697"
signal time=1506335482.868601 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null
destination) serial=227291 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus;
interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.190697"
   string ":1.190697"
   string ""
signal time=1506335483.305614 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null
destination) serial=227292 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus;
interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.190698"
   string ""
   string ":1.190698"
signal time=1506335483.310873 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null
destination) serial=227293 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus;
interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged
   string ":1.190698"
   string ":1.190698"
   string ""

This in turn causes gnome-shell to spend a huge amount of CPU churning
through these events, and if sufficiently starved of CPU (those load
testing scripts also consume quite a bit) when interacting with Google
Chome, it goes into key repeat runaway (similar to [2]).

I'm not completely certain, but there were quite a number of other
processes affected by this, and all of them start fighting over CPU time
to handle these NameOnwerChanged events.

As a workaround, disabling libnss-resolve in /etc/nsswitch.conf and just
using the stub resolver fixes things.

[Bug 1587249] Re: PIL exception fromstring

2017-01-15 Thread Chow Loong Jin
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ python-qrencode is currently broken for all users in yakkety due to the
removal of Image.fromstring from pillow.
+
+ The fix is to replace all calls to Image.fromstring with
+ Image.frombytes.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Run the following script and see if it ends in an exception:
+
+ ```
+ import qrencode
+ qrencode.encode_scaled("foo", 1)
+ ```
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ It's unlikely that python-qrencode can regress any further, because in its
current state, both exported python methods are completely broken and will
throw an exception unconditionally with the pillow version in Yakkety.
+
+ [Other Info]
+ rdeps may also be broken if they use Image.tostring on the output. So far,
the only known rdep that is broken is qreator.
+
+ Below is the stack trace and exception thrown by the broken version of
+ qrencode.

The gconf folder in question sounds useful, yeah. Please attach that to the bug

[Bug 1523698] Re: indicator-session is leaking memory on ubuntu 15.10

2016-02-15 Thread Chow Loong Jin
I ran it through valgrind by diverting indicator-session-service and
replacing it with the following script:

#!/bin/bash

exec valgrind \
--tool=massif \
--alloc-fn={g_slice_alloc,g_malloc,g_realloc} \
--massif-out-file=$HOME/massif-dump/indicator-session-service.out.%p \

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/indicator-session/indicator-session-service.distrib \
"$@"

Running ms_print on the output files gave me some stack traces of the
highest number of unfreed allocations:

Could you check the output of "xinput list-props 14"? (change 14 to
match whatever the ID should be from the pointer section. 14 is based on
your xinput output above).

How much space are we even talking about? How large is your log file? Mine's
only 148KiB. The log is also truncated on startup, so it shouldn't get
much bigger than that.

[Bug 1453655] Re: desktop icons disappear on Ubuntu 15.04 when clicking Open Dropbox folder

2015-06-23 Thread Chow Loong Jin
** Description changed:

  I've been using both Ubuntu and dropbox for several years. With Ubuntu
  15.04 there is a new problem that my desktop icons disappear when I
  click on the dropbox icon in the status bar and choose Open Dropbox
  Folder. Then the desktop icons will disappear - but will remain visible
  in Files - Desktop.

  The only way I know to get the desktop icons back is to log out and then
  log back in again. The bug is 100% reproducible, and it never appeared
  before 15.04. I also have Copy on my status bar. Clicking on Copy -
  Open Copy Folder has no problems. Likewise I can use File with a right
  click and use Open a New Window and that too is OK. Only dropbox has a
  problem and only since 15.04

  If I can help in any way, please contact me ilan.tal - at - gmail.com
+
+ [Impact]
+ DE-agnostic programs that invoke nautilus using nautilus --no-desktop will
make the nautilus-rendered desktop vanish. Dropbox is one such case.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Launch nautilus, and make sure it is currently rendering the desktop.
+ 2. Run nautilus --no-desktop /
+ 3. See if the desktop vanishes.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ The patch is relatively trivial, only affecting the --no-desktop codepath. As
a worst case, --no-desktop would not function correctly in cases where nautilus
is not already running (--no-desktop when nautilus is not already running means
nautilus should not render the desktop at all). Just to make sure, this
additional test case should be used:
+
+ 1. Kill nautilus, and make sure it doesn't get relaunched.
+ 2. Check to see what the desktop looks like (shouldn't be rendered by
nautilus, at least)
+ 3. Launch nautilus --no-desktop /
+ 4. Make sure that nautilus really doesn't render a desktop.

[Bug 1447956] Re: Banshee interface unresponsive after upgrade to 15.04

2015-06-07 Thread Chow Loong Jin
There are two approaches you can take for this:

1. Wait for it to enter vivd-updates. Now that it's been confirmed, this should
happen soon.
2. Forcibly install it from vivid-proposed together with the libglib2.0-0
updates that it wants.

For #2, the command in question should be something along the lines of
sudo apt-get install banshee/vivid-proposed libglib2.0-0/vivid-proposed
libglib2.0-bin/vivid-proposed. I haven't tested this command,  but I
think it should work.

Otherwise, you could try to disable the pin that causes vivid-proposed
to get a lower pin-priority in apt. This will cause a flood of -proposed
changes (which may or may not introduce regressions), so I advise
against this approach.

[Bug 1453655] Re: desktop icons disappear on Ubuntu 15.04 when clicking Open Dropbox folder

2015-06-06 Thread Chow Loong Jin
The command is nautilus $HOME/Dropbox, not $HOME/Dropbox.

And nevermind, I've figured it out. Dropbox launches nautilus using
nautilus --no-desktop $HOME/Dropbox, which, in Ubuntu 15.04, turns off
the desktop icon rendering. I think this is solely a bug in nautilus,
because as far as I know, --no-desktop was supposed to just tell
nautilus not to render the desktop *only* while launching.

 That works properly. Right click on the dropbox icon - Open Dropbox folder

Hmm, it doesn't seem to do this for me. I'm running 15.04 too.

Could you try opening a terminal, and running this command:
nautilus $HOME/Dropbox

Then check if the the bug occurs.

[Bug 1457467] Re: libsigx-2.0-dev wrong location of sigxconfig.h

2015-05-25 Thread Chow Loong Jin
** Description changed:

  The libsigx library requires the file sigxconfig.h in the include path
  (sigx.h:23).

  On my x86_64 system (Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS) the file is installed to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sigx-2.0/, but the include paths in sigx-2.0.pc are
  * /usr/lib/sigx-2.0 and
  * /usr/include/sigx-2.0

  This bug makes the library unusable for developers.

  Copying / linking the file sigxconfig.h to /usr/include/sigx-2.0/ solves
  the problem for me.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1. Install libsigx-2.0-dev
+ 2. Run pkg-config --cflags sigx-2.0
+ 3. Check that it does not list /usr/lib/sigx-2.0/
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Negligible. There are no reverse-dependencies for libsigx-2.0, and the only
change in question for this bug is the .pc file, which was broken and unusable
to begin with.

Oh right, I forgot to merge a patch for an sqlite regression that happened in
Debian. Whoopsie.

 If I'm not mistaken this only affects non-Administrator user accounts.
 It is happening on my fresh installation of 13.10.

Well, I don't think anything can be done from the perspective of
non-administrator user accounts.

As a non-administrative user, you're not able to add yourself to sambashare, and
hence nautilus-share can't take care of this for you under your own account.
This means the error message is valid, and you do need to ask your system's
administrator to add you to sambashare.

The only usecase that would be valid for fixing in this case would be an
administrative user who happens to not be in the sambashare group -- then
nautilus-share could perhaps invoke a privileged helper through policykit to
help the user add him/herself into the sambashare group.

[Bug 1413608] Re: Drawing and Raytracing workbenches missing

Ubuntu has no downstream modifications on FreeCAD. This bug was
inherited from Debian, and the fix just hadn't arrived at the time
Utopic was frozen and released. The fixed version in Debian is
0.14.3702+dfsg-2 (and above), both of which are in Ubuntu 15.04.
