[Bug 601299] Re: maverick btrfs slow install
James, In comment #6 you mentioned that you experience no btrfs slowdowns in a virtualized environment. That's probably because btrfs is running on an underlying filesystem, with a separate caching mechanism by the physical hard disk and host OS's handling of your disk. The net effect seems to mitigate whatever performance issues exist with btrfs, as opposed to what happens when used directly on bare metal. -- maverick btrfs slow install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/601299 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 601299] Re: maverick btrfs slow install
I can confirm the same issue; installation via the alpha 2 32bit alternate media takes ~2 hours when installing to a btrfs partition, compared to ~15 minutes to ext4. I'm not sure that system specs are necessary, because I don't think this is a bug (or if it is, it should be addressed upstream). There's an old thread on the linux-btrfs list[1] which mentions a similar problem, so perhaps btrfs' performance characteristics are unfavourable towards file activity related to package unpacking/installation. [Bug 228302] Re: [HARDY-LUCID] No DMA nor 32bits IO support
Igor, Andy others, I've done some investigation and found that it's not necessary to build ata_generic.ko as a module. From the kernel-parameters.txt documentation I noticed it says the following: Module parameters for modules that are built into the kernel image are specified on the kernel command line with the module name plus '.' plus parameter name, with '=' and value if appropriate [...] Therefore, the parameter we should use is: ata_generic.all_generic_ide=1 So, this is how to get it working: 1. Add blacklist pata_ali to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist 2. Run sudo update-initramfs -u 3. Add ata_generic.all_generic_ide=1 to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX line in /etc/default/grub 4. Run sudo update-grub 5. Reboot (preferably using the recovery option so that you can see the verbose boot information). WARNING: the above instructions may render your system unbootable (as it did for myself). If that happens, you will need to boot from a live CD, chroot into your installation and undo the blacklisting of the pata_ali module. If you're not comfortable with this risk, then don't follow the steps above. Unfortunately, this still doesn't solve the problem for me, as the ata_generic driver refuses to work with my hard drive (spewing DMA errors). If I can find some way to make the kernel assign the pata_ali to ATA port 1 (my hard disk) and ata_generic to ATA port 2 (CD-ROM), perhaps that would work. If anyone has suggestions, let me know. [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Petar, You clearly implied that I was misinterpreting my results in the first sentence of comment #37. In comment #59, I acknowledged that your system appears not to have the same memory leak issue; as I said, your allocation increases /and/ decreases, unlike my own. I asked for evidence simply because I was concerned that some people may have prematurely reported the bug as fixed (thankfully however, it seems that my issue is a corner-case). I am not interested in an argument, so don't try to create a mountain out of a molehill. Regardless, in light of the 1.8 server being uploaded to xorg-edgers (version 2:1.8.0+git20100422+server-1.8-branch.5455df65-0ubuntu0sarvatt2), I gave the newest packages another try. Unfortunately, compiz stilI freezes on my system with the 1.8 server. Although I'm not sure if it matters, considering that the leak in this report is related to GLX/OpenGL, I did enable metacity compositing (which uses XRender), and after 5 hours uptime I can see the object bytes allocation remaining stable at ~43MB. The system is very responsive, and closing applications has the expected effect of decreasing the GEM allocation. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Martin, Although the initial feedback from most people seems to indicate that the proposed update fixes the issue, I haven't seen anybody post output that would positively confirm the leak as being fixed (in other words, that the GEM object byte allocation is actually reducing when applications are closed). Is it possible that the leak is still present with the patched server? The reason why I'm asking is that my system has just 768MB of RAM, and depending on my usage pattern it can take several hours for me to recognize the sluggishness (typically when the GEM allocation reaches ~300MB or so). Users with larger amounts of RAM may not notice any problems until much later, perhaps. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Petar Volkovski, What you did in comment #51 is just another variation of the testcase in the bug description that others have been performing (and that you insist does not represent a memory leak). Your output differs from mine in that the GEM allocation increases *and* decreases. I have never seen the GEM object bytes allocation decrease on my system (as I said, even when I close every application and leave nothing but an empty GNOME desktop and panel running); only stopping/restarting the server will reduce the allocation. I can understand that the object bytes may level out at a certain size, but on my system it grows out of control. Once it hits ~300MB (of a system with the integrated graphics set to 128MB, and with just 768MB ram in total), the system becomes unusable due to I/O and swapping. It is clearly a memory leak. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Aside from disabling KMS, the only way in which I was able to stop this memory leak was to use a combination of the xorg- edgers packages and the mainline kernel 2.6.34-rc5. I am unsure which specific component eliminated the problem, but the problem disappeared only after installing kernel 2.6.34-rc5 [2] (which may or may not be coincidence, as an update in one of the xorg-edgers packages may have really solved the issue). Perhaps the bug is still present, but the driver or X server is more resistant to the GEM leak, somehow. [1] current xorg-edgers X server version: 2:1.7.6.901+git20100413+server-1.7-nominations.e7ab6537-0ubuntu0sarvatt3. After reaching ~300MB in object bytes, the computer began to slow down due to excessive I/O and disk swapping, so applications were slower to load and respond; however, in periods of calm I/O activity, graphics performance is absolutely fine. I see no graphical slowdown whatsoever! To summarise: Kernel 2.6.32-21-generic + proposed X server from this bug report = memory leak, graphical slowdown Kernel 2.6.32-21-generic + xorg-edgers packages = memory leak, graphical slowdown Kernel 2.6.34-rc5 + proposed X server from this bug report = memory leak, no discernible graphical slowdown Kernel 2.6.34-rc5 + xorg-edgers package = memory leak, no discernible graphical slowdown In other words: a) I get a memory leak in all cases, with or without the patched X server; b) the newer kernel eliminates any graphical performance impact from the memory leak. I'm not sure in what direction to proceed; since it seems that most people are seeing the bug fixed, perhaps this is a separate leak that's not related to 03_fedora_glx_versioning.diff and 04_fedora_glx14-swrast.diff. [Bug 565981] Re: [KMS] gem objects not deallocated
Peter Velkovski, Thanks for the suggestion, but on my system - even if I close all applications on the running X server - the GEM object bytes value *never* decreases. Freeing the pagecache, dentries and inodes (as you suggest) makes no difference at any point. The only way to reduce the ever-increasing GEM allocation is to restart the running X server. At the conclusion of all my tests (comments #33-36), I always stopped GDM, switched to a VT, and checked the values in /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects. With no X server running, the object bytes allocation is usually reduced to ~30MB. Let me also clarify something: In comments #33-36, I neglected to mention that by patched X server, I was referring to version 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7~xup2 from the X-Updates PPA. I have subsequently tried to test version 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.5 from https://edge.launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/bugs and noted the following: GDM starts up and I can enter my login credentials, but I get stuck at the purple wallpaper with no other graphical elements loading. The pointer is responsive and I can switch to a VT (which I do). At this point I check the kernel and Xorg.0.log, but see no errors or useful output from the tail sections. When I try to switch from the VT back to the running server, my system freezes and I am forced to power cycle the system. It seems to me that the 2ubuntu7.5 packaged with the backported fixes has the bigger potential for regressions. As for my particular system, I guess that my last recourse it to test a vanilla 1.8 server to see if that fixes the memory leak. -- [KMS] gem objects not deallocated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

While the problem is related to GtkRange::trough-under-steppers = 1 in the theme gtkrc, let me clarify that this is a GTK widget style property, and *not* a Murrine engine option [1]. XULRunner-based applications (such as Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.) seem to ignore some (or all?) GTK widget style properties. Another property that gets ignored is GtkNotebook::tab-overlap. In my Dichotomy theme [2] I have set the GtkNotebook::tap-overlap property to -1 which should have the effect of spacing tabs 1 pixel apart. I suspect that the boot option isn't parsed because the ata_generic module is still built- in to the kernel. ... or perhaps the option has been renamed; I'll do some experimenting and try to find out. -- [HARDY-LUCID] No DMA nor 32bits IO support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228302 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use
Jeremy, Unfortunately I can no longer do any testing due to the fact that the laptop in question became physically damaged. However, the bug may be invalid; I remember that there was a change to the default mouse configuration which disabled touch-to-click at the time I filed this bug (a fact I became aware of later). This change to the default configuration was later reverted, and the touchpad appeared to function normally. I'm not sure if the configuration change was coincidental (since the original log I posted shows no log activity for the Synaptics driver), or if the generic mouse driver also supports tap- to-click. -- [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228302] Re: [HARDY-LUCID] No DMA nor 32bits IO support
Igor, Let's try to get a summary of action needed. Problem: the pata_ali kernel driver does not support ATAPI DMA transfers properly on certain ALI chipsets (even if force-enabled via the driver option atapi_dma=1). The ata_generic kernel driver supports ATAPI DMA transfers for such chipsets and has a special kernel boot option, all_generic_ide, which causes it to override the manufacturer-specific drivers. However, this option does not work correctly when the ata_generic and pata_ali drivers are compiled-in to the kernel, which means that the ata_generic driver is impossible to use. Solution: Change these kernel config parameters: CONFIG_PATA_ALI=y CONFIG_ATA_GENERIC=y To the following: CONFIG_PATA_ALI=m CONFIG_ATA_GENERIC=m Result: 1. For all other users: there will be no functional difference between the original and modified kernel configuration (as long as the logic to automatically modprobe the ata_generic/pata_ali kernel modules is properly in place) 2. For users with buggy ALI chipsets, they can now take advantage of the kernel boot options all_generic_ide and/or to manually blacklist the pata_ali driver, which will cause the ata_generic driver to be used (and as a result, ATAPI DMA will work properly). Has there been any progress on this issue? I experience slow DNS lookup times on *all* my machines with Ubuntu (including Lucid), but not on any version of Windows. Well, the original bug was that the font applied no hinting, so we can at least confirm that part is fixed, yes? Technically the bug is fixed. [Bug 204567] Re: Downloads should go to ~/Downloads
Sebastien, Yes, it's worth breaking from upstream. Using the singular Download is inconsistent. The only singular entries are Home Folder and Desktop, because they represent a singular entity. The rest of the xdg-user-dirs folders are named Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos, which are pluralized. We should keep things consistent, i.e. change Download to Downloads, or else change the rest to Document, Music, Picture and Video. It seems pretty obvious that the latter is not appropriate. Also, it seems that on a fresh install of Alpha 6, the Download folder is placed at the bottom of the bookmarks list in Places; all folders should be sorted alphabetically descending (with exception to Home Folder, and possibly also Desktop). Therefore I would suggest that Fix Released against the xdg-user-dirs task is not accurate. -- Downloads should go to ~/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 204567] Re: downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads
I'm attaching the proposed patch to be applied against the gnome-panel package*, which increases MAX_ITEMS_OR_SUBMENU from 5 to 8. When this patch is applied, the Places menu will show 8 bookmarks and/or drives before branching into a submenu. Rationale: Currently we have four initial bookmarks on a default installation (Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos), which allows space for one custom bookmark to be added before the bookmarks are branched into a submenu. If we add a Downloads bookmark to the default installation, the Places menu will branch into a submenu after one custom bookmark is added. Increasing the threshold from 5 to 8 will allow for 3 extra bookmarks to be added before the submenu is branched, thus utilizing more space on the Places menu. *This is a separate issue to bug #262520. ** Attachment added: Increase hardcoded value of MAX_ITEM_OR_SUBMENU from 5 to 8, to accommodate extra bookmarks in Places menu http://launchpadlibrarian.net/30230368/32_increase_max_items_or_submenu.patch -- downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 204567] Re: downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads
Just to clarify: On a resolution of 1024x768, using the default setup (Sans 10pt at 96dpi), a menu can accommodate 25 entries before scrolling. Considering the patch in comment #34, the maximum potential entries displayed by the Places menu will be 22. This is the breakdown: 1. Home Folder* 2. Desktop* 3-10. 8 bookmarks 11-18. 8 drives 19. Network 20. Connect to Server 21. Search for Files... 22. Recent Documents *Home Folder and Desktop are not counted as bookmarks. Some questions: a) What is the minimum resolution of a netbook (considering UNR)? As long as the height is no less than 768, this patch won't harm netbook users. b) Are mounted network shares added to the Places menu underneath Connect to Server? I can't test at the moment. If this is the case, the maximum potential entries would rise to 30, which may not be ideal. -- downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

rugby471, Are you sure it's wise to mark it as Fix Committed? I had the impression that it meant that the fix was applied to the working branch (bzr or whatever), not when a patch is submitted to a bug report. Michael, On a resolution of 1024x768, the maximum amount of icons which can fit on the desktop is approximately 36. After this, icons will begin to overlap at the top-right corner of the desktop. Additionally, as removable and mounted disks are added or removed, their placement becomes erratic. How is this an acceptable situation? In the Places menu we have Home Folder, Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures* and Videos - we can add the Download folder to this list. *Just to illustrate the current lack of cohesion, the default image management application (F-Spot) doesn't even use the Pictures folder by default, it tries to save to a non-existent Photos folder... -- downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 204567] Re: downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads
mac_v, With regard to the Places item limitation, I agree. While I'm not so sure that adding a gconf entry is necessary, the Ubuntu gnome-panel package could patch the hardcoded value as mentioned in the upstream report. The limit of 5 bookmarks is bizarre; less than half of the menu height can be utilized, and yet, after installing a few extra applications, the System - Preferences menu will overflow at a standard 1024x768 resolution. We could raise the limit from 5 to 8 or perhaps a little more, and the menu will never overflow - unless you have a lot of partitions/devices present on your system (and why can't the list of devices turn into a submenu in the same way as bookmarks do?). We don't need to fight with upstream - let's add the gnome-panel package to the also-affected list for this bug and see if the maintainer would be willing to make this very small change. ** Also affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 378325] Re: X login screen volume always set to max; crazy loud
Also affects me. I just want to add: on my laptop (Inspiron 510m), the login sound is so loud that the speakers rattle. Since the ALSA drivers aren't capable of applying EQ settings (which are present in Windows drivers for virtually all laptops), this is pushing the speakers beyond their recommended limit, and to my ears it sounds quite capable of physically damaging the speakers. Very annoying. Remember that most laptops do not have analog volume controls, so there is no way to physically reduce the volume (and the login sound plays before the volume hotkeys become responsive). -- X login screen volume always set to max; crazy loud https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378325 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 407621] Re: Icons missing from context menu , dialogue buttons , firefox bookmark favicons
Folks, Let's gather some meaningful data, reasonable opinion, and (if necessary) exercise our independence as to whether we should re-enable menu and button icons in Ubuntu. I am asking a very simple question. Where is the best place to discuss this proposal to re-enable icons; the forums, ubuntu-devel-discuss ML, Brainstorm? Or will the user community have no voice in this decision? It may be a lost cause to petition upstream [1], especially since we didn't participate in a debate that we weren't aware that existed, but we still have an opportunity in Ubuntu. [Bug 400371] [NEW] Notification area does not select appropriately sized icons for certain applications
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Distribution: Karmic Koala, release candidate human-theme update from Kenneth Wimer's PPA (see below). Description of problem: When using a GTK theme which defines 'gtk-icon- sizes = gtk-button=16,16', certain applications (listed below) will incorrectly display 16,16px icons in the notification area of gnome- panel. Applications known to be affected: - gnome-power-manager (note: non-laptop users can force the icon to display by going to System - Preferences - Power Management, General tab, Always display an icon) - transmission Known not to be affected: - nm-applet - gnome-volume-control applet Steps to reproduce: a) Install the latest human-theme package 0.29ubuntu1 which uses a 16,16px gtk-button size (not yet available from the main repository): https://launchpad.net/~kwwii/+archive/ppa b) log out and back in for changes to take effect (switching from another theme back to Human is not sufficient to trigger this bug, as the panel notification icons won't refresh properly) c) open an affected application (such as transmission). Actual results: - affected applications display a 16,16px notification icon. Expected results: - all applications display a notification icon appropriate to the panel's current size (24px by default) Important Notes: - affected application do not have 24,24px icons in the Human icon set, but they are available in the hicolor fallback set. - switching themes will not trigger this bug in affected applications (the panel icons don't refresh properly) - so you must close and re-open the application if it is already open. Known workarounds: a) Manually copy the relevant 24,24px icon for the affected application from /usr/share/icons/hicolor/... to /usr/share/icons/Human/... Example for transmission: $ sudo cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/apps/transmission.png /usr/share/icons/Human/24x24/apps/ b) Manually resize the top panel from 24px height to 26px height. Possible causes (speculation): - considering workaround A, and that the affected applications only have 24,24px icons available in the fallback hicolor theme, it seems likely that the icon fallback logic (from the Human/user-selected icon set to the hicolor icon set) may be broken. - considering workaround B, gnome-panel's notification icon scaling may be broken. I am unsure what application to file against this issue - it could be a multi-faceted problem, so it's better for the maintainer of the icon sets, gnome-panel and these affected applications get a chance to see. It would be a good idea for this bug to get some attention, as we are aiming for the official human-theme in Karmic to adopt 16,16px gtk- button sizes. [Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio
Dave, You won't see any improvement until you enable glitch-free audio (providing that glitch-free works for your hardware) - see the recent posts by myself and Daniel. Until this is done officially, you can edit the configuration files yourself: 1. Create a copy of the configuration files to your user's pulse folder: $ cp /etc/pulse/* ~/.pulse/ 2. Edit ~/.pulse/default.pa, do a search for tsched=0 and change to tsched=1. 3. (Optional). Edit ~/.pulse/daemon.conf and comment the resample- method, default-fragments and default-fragments-msec lines, like so: ; resample-method = speex-float-1 ; default-fragments = 8 ; default-fragment-size-msec = 10 This should completely eliminate stuttering, as long as your audio card doesn't trigger certain kernel bugs (see my previous comment to see a related bug). Note: be sure to delete the contents of ~/.pulse/ to revert these settings if there is a pulseaudio update, otherwise the newer configuration files in /etc/pulse will get ignored. -- Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 396831] [NEW] Proposal: Set grdc (Remote Desktop Client) as default remote client for Karmic (replaces tsclient and vinagre)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: grdc I propose that for the GNOME release of Karmic, Grdc Remote Desktop Client should be installed by default, replacing both the tsclient and vinagre applications. Availability: grdc 0.6.0-0ubuntu1 available from the universe repository with minimal extra libraries required (libvncserver0 and potentially libssh-2). The 0.6 release is considered stable by upstream. Overview: supports RDP, VNC, SSH and Avahi network protocols, more stable multi-threading, password encryption [1] Rationale: grdc provides superior features compared to both tsclient and vinagre combined; performance is equal to tsclient for RDP connections and superior to vinagre for VNC connections; interface is uncluttered (despite offering useful advanced functionality); application supports the two most popular protocols (RDP and VNC) in single interface; upstream development is active; low disk footprint (installing the packages grdc libssh-2 libvncserver0 requires 1036KB disk space). Argument against inclusion: vinagre should be supported since it is part of the official GNOME desktop set. Counter-argument: vinagre has not seen significant development in quite some time, and has serious performance issues for VNC connections and does not support basic options such as changing bit depth [2]. Brief summary of client features: 1. vinagre (VNC client): - Supports VNC and Avahi protocols - Supported by upstream GNOME project and included in default desktop configuration. - Supports full screen, scaling, view only mode. - Interface allows users to save and open connection profiles (called Bookmarks) - Performance is generally considered poor [2]; very slow even over 100Mbit connection, and lack of colour depth option further reduces options to improve performance over low bandwidth connections. 2. tsclient (RDP client) - Potentially supports RDP, VNC, XDMCP, ICA protocols; default configuration in Ubuntu only provides RDP functionality. - Supports custom screen resolution, bit depths, full-screen switch (of which the latter doesn't function). - Supports custom keyboard mapping (which doesn't work correctly for me). - Supports creation of connection profiles, but the interface does not have any way of displaying/choosing previously saved connections. - Interface provides support for advanced features such as bitmap caching, but advanced settings do not appear to work correctly, nor are they saved properly when you create a connection profile. - Performance with RDP connection is generally good (which reflects upon rdesktop, as tsclient is only a frontend) 3. grdc (RDP/VNC/Avahi/SSH client) - Supports RDP, VNC, SSH, Avahi network protocols - Supports custom screen resolution, bit depths; full-screen switch available via pulldown toolbar. - Supports advanced RDP options such as bitmap caching, compression and attaching to Windows 2003 console (which appear to function, unlike tsclient). - Supports VNC options such as remote cursor, view only and disable server input. - Interface allows users to save and open connection profiles. - Interface presents many useful options, but does a good job of isolating basic options from advanced options via tabs in preferences dialog. - Supports SSH tunneling. - Supports grabbing of keyboard events. - Performance with RDP *and* VNC protocol is excellent. [Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio
Luke Daniel, I've been experimenting with PulseAudio in Karmic and Fedora 11, and I'm making some observations/suggestions relevant to this bug report, and PulseAudio as a whole. My basic codec identifier, for reference: c...@inspiron:~/.pulse$ aplay -l List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices card 0: I82801DBICH4 [Intel 82801DB-ICH4], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel 82801DB-ICH4] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: I82801DBICH4 [Intel 82801DB-ICH4], device 4: Intel ICH - IEC958 [Intel 82801DB-ICH4 - IEC958] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 In Fedora 11 (which uses kernel 2.6.29 and PulseAudio 0.9.15 with glitch-free playback enabled and no resampler/fragment customizations, unlike Ubuntu), audio works perfectly without any stutters, and bug #374002 is not triggered on my system. With Karmic using the default PulseAudio settings, I'm experiencing what I would call micro-stutters, where the sound appears to skip an extremely short duration (milliseconds) every 20 seconds or so - this never occurred on Intrepid or Hardy with PulseAudio, is 100% reproducible in Totem and other applications, and is definitely not due CPU starvation. Bug #374002 [1] is not triggered, but only because glitch-free playback is disabled. On Karmic with kernel 2.6.30-10-generic, I modified PulseAudio's configuration to use a vanilla PulseAudio configuration that's equal to Fedora (tsched=1, and no customizations to the resampler or default- fragment* values). This eliminated the microstutters entirely, but it triggers bug #374002 on my laptop after some minutes of audio playback. Even Skype appears to work correctly for a short time, but the aforementioned bug always kicks in within a few minutes, which requires PulseAudio to be restarted manually. Tonight I upgraded to kernel 2.6.31-1-generic and with the same vanilla configuration, microstutters are eliminated entirely *and* bug #374002 is no longer triggered on my system. Even the most troublesome application, Skype, works absolutely flawlessly with PulseAudio (when configured to use the pulse device). There are no stutters at all, and Skype maintains a single client connection to the PulseAudio server (I'm sure you've noticed the problem where Skype connects and disconnects to the server dozens or sometimes hundreds of times in the space of a few minutes, causing stuttering - this no longer occurs). First, a question: why did kernel 2.6.30-10-generic trigger bug #374002, when it was supposed to be fixed since kernel 2.6.29 according to Fedora's bug report related to my particular codec [2]? As I said earlier, this bug did not occur when I tested Fedora 11 on my laptop. Second, a proposal: let's enable glitch-free playback and revert the modifications to the default-resampler, default-fragments and default- fragment-size-msec parameters. I understand that this will trigger the snd_pcm_delay/snd_pcm_avail errors in buggy drivers (even though my particular codec appears fixed), but we need to face facts: a) interrupt-based playback in PulseAudio really is glitchy, and audio quality is suffering for everyone on Karmic as a result; b) the resampler/fragment modifications we use in Ubuntu are poor workarounds [3] for the erratic buffering behaviour in certain applications (Skype) and CPU usage caused by interrupt-based playback in PulseAudio; c) There is no guarantee that we can resolve the current stuttering/buffering issues with interrupt-based playback, as it seems pretty obvious that the majority of development is focused on glitch-free playback in PulseAudio; d) We are depriving ourselves of the opportunity to co-operate with the PulseAudio, Fedora, ALSA and upstream kernel developers in squashing the remaining bugs in PulseAudio and the ALSA kernel drivers that glitch-free playback exposes. I am aware that some sound cards may never work correctly with glitch- free (due to poor hardware documentation), but perhaps we can consider a method to blacklist cards later on - let's cross that bridge when we come to it. Luke, it seems like an excellent idea to implement these changes in your PPA (if you feel it's it's too risky to test in the official repository), what do you think? We have ample opportunity to begin wider testing of glitch-free playback, and our testing in Ubuntu can potentially improve the ALSA kernel drivers in the final 2.6.31 kernel. I'd like to help in any way possible. [Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio
Sorry, slight correction to my previous post. With kernel 2.6.31-1-generic and glitch-free PulseAudio, Skype does have the problem of hundreds of connections opening/closing - but there is absolutely no stuttering even under CPU load. This issue is probably due to Skype's buggy implemention of the ALSA API; nevertheless, it just shows that glitch-free handles this problem more robustly than using custom fragment values and lower-quality resamplers (as long as your ALSA kernel driver works correctly). -- Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 204567] Re: downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads
roffik, I understand your concern, but the truth is that the Desktop becomes very cluttered and ugly when used as a download folder. When you mount and dismount drives regularly, you will see that the placement of new downloads becomes fragmented, and when you reach the limit, the icons overlap. This is a case where I think that we should follow the specification, because *it makes sense*. Note: aside from other Linux-based distributions that follow this specification, Windows Vista and 7 uses a $User/Downloads folder by default, which is used by Internet Explorer, but not Firefox 3. However, Firefox 3.5 on Windows will save downloads to $User/Downloads *even on Windows XP* (which does not create a Downloads folder by default). It really is Ubuntu lagging behind everybody else on this issue. I would also suggest that we make proper use of the default user folders in Ubuntu (for example, F-Spot tries to import into a non-existent ~/Pictures folder by default, when we already have a ~/Photos folder available. This is a matter for another bug report, though, and maybe it's reported already). -- downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads : XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to $HOME/Downloads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 385995] Re: sometimes tries to edit menu.lst even with GRUB 2
I tried to perform an install of Karmic Alpha 2 with the desktop i386 CD and suffered from this bug, and using the boot-time option grub- installer/grub2_instead_of_grub_legacy=false listed in the release notes did not work, unfortunately. I have a dual-boot configuration with Windows 7 RC on my Inspiron 510m laptop. If any users are reading this a) who cannot install via the instructions listed in the Alpha 2 release notes, and b) do not wish to wait until alpha 3, there is a way to get it working: When you login to the live environment, open a terminal and perform the following steps: $ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install ubiquity ubiquity-frontend-gtk ubiquity-ubuntu-artwork This will upgrade the ubiquity installer to the fixed version within your live environment. [Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use
Hmm, now I'm not so certain. Although there is no output indicating that the synaptics driver is being used (as opposed to merely being loaded), it seems the driver is in use. I tried to manually enable tap-to-click via synclient TapButton1=1 - and it worked. I also tried to remove the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package,, and the mouse behaviour changed after restarting X (mouse movements were accelerated too much). This indicates that the synaptics driver was being used correctly. In Jaunty and earlier I would see output in my Xorg.0.log similar to SRElysian in comment #14; perhaps the newest driver in Karmic does not display this information any longer. -- [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

People, You're hijacking my bug report. If you read my Xorg.0.log you'll see that the Synaptics driver isn't being loaded at all - this is my issue, not tap-to-click being disabled by default. [Bug 379236] [NEW] Proposal: include p7zip-full in ubuntu-restricted-extras metapackage
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-restricted-extras I suggest that for the upcoming Karmic release, we include p7zip-full in the ubuntu-restricted-extras metapackage. Justification: 1. The 7z format (an implementation of the LZMA algorithm) is one of the most efficient compression algorithms for end-users (in terms of the balance between efficiency and CPU/memory usage). It is already in our repository patent-unencumbered, and usually surpasses the efficiency of RAR (which is more efficient than bzip2 and gzip, but patent-encumbered). 2. Users who install restricted packages are more likely to exchange media with users from other operating systems. Since WinRAR is the most ubiquitous *third-party* archiver on Windows (that also supports the 7z format natively), we are improving the user experience by including the capability to exchange common archive formats. 3. Related to the previous point: the p7zip-full package (as opposed to the p7zip package) supports other formats such as RAR. Patent concerns are unnecessary (as this package is already included within our universe repository). 4. GNOME's official archive manager (file-roller) will automatically detect the presence of the command-line p7zip binaries when they are installed, and offer support to compress and decompress archives within its interface - no extra work is required for this integration. 5. By introducing the 7z format to a wider audience, perhaps this will accelerate efforts for Ubuntu to implement the dpkg-lzma blueprint (which would allow for the p7zip package to be included on the Live CD - though this is a subject for a different bug). See: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/dpkg-lzma For an ongoing discussion on the Ubuntu Forums, see this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1165142 ** Affects: ubuntu-restricted-extras (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: Binary package hint: ubuntu-restricted-extras I suggest that for the upcoming Karmic release, we include p7zip-full in the ubuntu-restricted-extras metapackage. [Bug 261117] Re: p7zip package should be installed by default
I also highly recommend this proposal. The p7zip archive resides in the universe repository, but I don't see any problems with it getting moved to main - 7z is based on the LZMA algorithm which has no patent encumbrances (it's the p7zip-full archive that would be inappropriate for main, as it includes RAR support). The archive is currently 337KB - and while I understand that every single KB is precious on the Live CD, let me point out that the inclusion of p7zip by default could accelerate the adoption of the dpkg- lzma[1] blueprint (that would yield a saving of 175mb on the alternative image), and improved changes of Ubuntu's SquashFS image being transitioned to LZMA, when official support arrives in the near future. I have also filed a related bug[2] to get p7zip-full included in the ubuntu-restricted-extras repository (which serves wider needs than the scope of this bug). There's also an ongoing discussion[3] in the development section of Ubuntu Forums. [Bug 378577] [NEW] Proposal: set shadow_radius to more conservative value
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I would like to propose that we set a more conservative value for the shadow_radius in compiz. The crux of my argument would be that the shadows look too pronounced - however, this would then relegate the report outside the realm of being a bug. Therefore, putting aside aesthetic arguments of the shadow appearance, the current setting causes an unnatural sense of separation between selected menu items on the menubar and the actual menus. Also, gtk- window-decorator applies shadow to the metacity window manager decoration even when maximized, which (slightly) messes up the gradient pattern in the default Human metacity theme. These two issues would constitute a bug in a certain sense, therefore. [Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio
Daniel, While I don't dispute your observation that a hardware component is involved with the distorted audio, I think that we can all agree that src-linear is the lowest-common denominator in terms of audio quality, and an alternative should be chosen. Lennart recommends against using this resampler on the PA development list; see: https://tango.0pointer.de/pipermail/pulseaudio- discuss/2009-April/003490.html You say that some users don't notice src-linear resampler artifacts on certain hardware - I would counter that these users may not have testing with their PCM volume set above ~75% (IIRC, the PCM slider is set to around 75% in a stock install of Ubuntu), as the distortion won't kick in below this threshold. Also, some reporters may be confusing distortion (in terms of resampler artifacts) with stuttering (buffering problems, etc.). [Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio
Daniel, The src-linear resampler (current setting in Jaunty) is really awful, too. It causes crackles for certain ranges in audio (e.g. explosions); by crackles I mean resampling artifacts, not stuttering or buffering problems. These crackles never occurred with ALSA's default dmix, and I mentioned some of my results regarding the different resamplers in the comments of bug #190754. My understanding is that this is the rough ranking of resamplers, from best to worst (with CPU usage following the same trend, from high to low): src-sinc-best-quality, src-sinc-medium-quality, src-sinc-fastest, speex-float-{10-0}, speex-fixed-{10-0}, ffmpeg, src-zero-order-hold, src-linear, trivial. As you can see, we're currently using the second-worst resampler. From personal testing, my conclusion was that speex-float-1 was the best resampler that balanced low CPU usage with audio quality (no distortion or crackles at certain ranges). For all the resamplers from speex- float-0 and below, crackles occured on both of my systems (using different codecs of snd-intel8x0). I suggest if you have time (and find some appropriate audio samples), you test some of the resamplers to find the optimal default in PulseAudio. -- Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Relevant lspci -vvnn output: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02) Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:0164] Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast TAbort- TAbort- MAbort- SERR- PERR- INTx+ Latency: 0 Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 11 Region 0: Memory at f000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M] Region 1: Memory at faf8 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512K] Region 2: I/O ports at c000 [size=8] Capabilities: access denied Kernel modules: intelfb Current MTRR setup: c...@inspiron:~$ cat /proc/mtrr reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size= 512MB, count=1: write-back reg01: base=0x02000 ( 512MB), size= 256MB, count=1: write-back reg02: base=0x02ff0 ( 767MB), size=1MB, count=1: uncachable reg03: base=0x0feda ( 4077MB), size= 128KB, count=1: write-through The fix: sudo -s echo base=0xF000 size=0x0800 type=write-combining | /proc/mtrr Enabling write combining allows Totem to play 720p content with absolutely no stuttering (compared to low-resolution content stuttering without the fix). I can't say that I notice a huge increase in 3D performance, however. I won't bother to report glxgears scores, it's not an accurate tool to measure performance. -- [i915GM] MTRR entry missing since jaunty - is this intentional? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/314928 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
