[Bug 1551897] Re: Excessive CPU utilization

2016-05-09 Thread Evan Broder
** Description changed:

+
+ [DESCRIPTION]
+
+ When hotplugging a composite USB device that expose multiple interfaces
+ (such as a Yubikey NEO or Yubikey 4), libccid does not correctly de-
+ initialize the USB library when it skips over the non-CCID interface.
+
+ This subsequently results in pcscd (or, presumably, anything that loads
+ libccid, though I don't think anything else does) either using 100% CPU
+ or segfaulting when the device is unplugged.
+
+ This seems worthy of an SRU as it is an easily reproducible bug with a
+ simple, targeted fix.
+
+ [TEST CASE]
+
+ 1. Make sure pcscd is running (sudo systemctl start pcscd; possibly sudo
systemctl restart pcscd if a potentially fixed package has just been installed)
+ 2. Plug and then unplug a composite USB device that includes a CCID interface
(such as a Yubikey NEO)
+ 3. Observe that pcscd has crashed with a segfault (sudo systemctl status
pcscd)
+
+ [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
+
+ The patch is quite narrow, and thus the potential for regression should
+ be limited. The new code adds calls to close_libusb_if_needed, which is
+ already written to be fairly conservative.
+
+ The worst case here is likely an unexpected call to libusb_exit, which
+ could cause libusb to get into an inconsistent state. However, in
+ practice the call seems quite safe, and the likelihood of regression
+ low.

[Bug 1551897] Re: Excessive CPU utilization

2016-05-09 Thread Evan Broder
This is actually a bug in ccid's handling of composite USB devices, and
has been fixed upstream (https://alioth.debian.org/plugins/scmgit/cgi-
bin/gitweb.cgi?p=pcsclite/CCID.git;a=commitdiff_plain;h=3c21f452543983f3625a1965ce234074cbda6865).

My experience was that this bug caused pcscd to segfault, rather than to
consume 100% CPU, but the fix appears to be the same either way.

I've attached a debdiff that fixes the issue for me, and I've uploaded a
test build to my PPA (https://launchpad.net/~broder/+archive/ubuntu
/ubuntu-tests). I suspect this merits an SRU, since it's a significant
regression in functionality without a good workaround; I'll start on the
paperwork.

[Bug 1297849] Re: [SRU] Virtual private network connection fails after distribution upgrade due to outdated Network Manager configuration files

2015-10-18 Thread Evan Broder
@brian-murray: I just installed the package from proposed on trusty and
it seems to have improved things, although there's a 5-10 second delay
after nm-applet starts up where it hasn't registered itself as a secrets
provider. Still, this seems to be an improvement in behavior.

[Bug 1311886] Re: nsd fails to install

2015-01-11 Thread Evan Broder
** Description changed:

+ [IMPACT]
+
+ Currently, nsd fails to install. The postinst attempts to start the nsd
+ daemon before creating the nsd user, and fails when starting the daemon
+ fails.
+
+ The daemon is started by debhelper-generated snippets. The attached
+ fixes move the auto-generated snippets to the end of the postinst, after
+ the non-auto-generated code creates the user.
+
+ (This is the fix used by Debian to fix Debian bug #743396)
+
+ [TEST CASE]
+
+ 1. Ensure that the nsd user doesn't already exist:
+
+$ getent passwd nsd
+$
+
+ 2. Install nsd:
+
+$ sudo apt-get install nsd
+
+ Note: This won't work in an environment such as a buildd chroot where
+ daemons are disabled via policy-rc.d - you'll either have to remove the
+ file or specifically whitelist the nsd daemon.
+
+ Expected results: package install successfully
+
+ Actual results:
+
+ $ sudo apt-get install nsd
+
+ Unpacking nsd (4.0.1-1) ...
+ Processing triggers for man-db (2.6.7.1-1) ...
+ Processing triggers for ureadahead (0.100.0-16) ...
+ Setting up nsd (4.0.1-1) ...
+ start: Job failed to start
+ invoke-rc.d: initscript nsd, action start failed.
+ dpkg: error processing package nsd (--configure):
+   subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
+ Processing triggers for ureadahead (0.100.0-16) ...
+ Errors were encountered while processing:
+    nsd
+ E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
+
+ [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
+
+ Seems quite low. There are no changes to the actual nsd code, so the
+ likelihood of affecting successful installs seems minimal. The only
+ debhelper-generated code in the postinst are related to the init script
+ (starting the daemon, and upgrading from sysvinit to upstart), so the
+ possibility for side-effects from moving the snippets also seems
+ minimal.

[Bug 1234376] Re: HOSTALIAS doesn't update after changing config files

2015-01-10 Thread Evan Broder
Thanks for the approvals, Sebastian and Brian.

I've repeated the steps I outlined in the description and confirmed that
the bug does not occur with the packages in -proposed. I've also
installed the packages in our production nagios server and confirmed
that things seem to more or less work as expected.

[Bug 1234376] Re: HOSTALIAS doesn't update after changing config files

2014-12-08 Thread Evan Broder
** Description changed:

- Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
- Release: 12.04
+ [Impact]
+ Under nagios 3.2.3 with state retention enabled, any host aliases or display
names assigned to a host would be persisted into the retention file, and would
supersede subsequent configuration changes. As a result, changes to either
hosts' aliases or display names would not be reflected in either the nagios CGI
interface or notification macros (like HOSTALIAS)

- nagios3:
- Installed: 3.2.3-3ubuntu1
- Candidate: 3.2.3-3ubuntu1
+ There are numerous references to this bug online, including several upstream
nagios issues:
+ http://tracker.nagios.org/view.php?id=272

- The problem is described here http://tracker.nagios.org/view.php?id=238
+ And several blog posts:
+
http://ten-fingers-and-a-brain.com/2011/10/nagios-doesnt-update-the-host-alias-macro-%E2%80%93-workaround/
+
http://www.claudiokuenzler.com/blog/179/nagios-notifications-contain-wrong-host-alias-name#.VIZph-pGjUY

- The solution that worked for me is here
- http://www.claudiokuenzler.com/blog/179/nagios-notifications-contain-
- wrong-host-alias-name but instead of fully deleting
- /var/lib/nagios3/retention.dat I stopped the nagios service update the
- alias and restarted it.
+ [Test Case]
+ Although the bug is in nagios3-core, it's easiest to observe using
nagios3-cgi:
+
+ 1. Install nagios3-cgi
+ 2. Edit /etc/nagios3/cgi.cfg and set use_authentication=0
+ 3. Edit /etc/apache2/conf.d/nagios3.conf and remove the AuthName, AuthType,
AuthUserFile, and require lines
+ 4. Restart apache2 to pick up the new config
+ 5. Open http://localhost/cgi-bin/nagios3/extinfo.cgi?type=1host=localhost
+ 6. Observe that the host is described as Host localhost (localhost) -
localhost is both the host name and the alias
+ 7. Edit /etc/nagios3/conf.d/localhost_nagios2.cfg and change alias to
otherhost (line 10 or so)
+ 8. Restart nagios3 to pick up the new config
+ 9. Open http://localhost/cgi-bin/nagios3/extinfo.cgi?type=1host=localhost
again
+
+ Buggy behavior: host is still described as Host localhost (localhost)
+ Fixed behavior: host description is updated to Host otherhost (localhost)
to reflect alias change
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ It's difficult to understand what the upstream intent was when this bug was
introduced to know if it's addressing a broader issue - both the introduction
and resolution of the issue lack useful commentary in the commit messages.
+
+ However, this patch is definitely a behavior change: previously changes
+ to the disk configuration would not be reflected in the nagios runtime
+ configuration without manual intervention. It's possible there are use
+ cases which rely on this behavior. However, it seems unlikely to me that
+ a user would change a configuration file and restart the daemon and not
+ intend for those changes to take effect
+
+ This issue has proven to be frustrating to our usage of nagios in
+ production, and my belief is that fixing it would create less net
+ confusion than leaving it. However, maybe that's not enough to satisfy
+ the SRU bar.
+
+ Outside of that change, the patch is very narrow and regression
+ potential seems low.

[Bug 1191460] Re: $PreserveFQDN and $LocalHostName not always used

2013-08-04 Thread Evan Broder
There's a comment at http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
branches/ubuntu/saucy/rsyslog/saucy/view/head:/tools/syslogd.c#L2428
that says we need to re-call GenerateLocalHostNameProperty after parsing
config, but as far as I can tell, that doesn't happen.

Does adding a call to queryLocalHostname() around line 2958 of
tools/syslogd.c make this work?

[Bug 1169030] Re: CVE 2013-1915: local files disclosure or resource exhaustion via XML External Entity attack

2013-04-16 Thread Evan Broder
I did look at those - the patch for CVE-2009-5031 seems to have been
applied already. The link to the patch for CVE-2012-2751 (http://mod-
security.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mod-

be dead, so I haven't been able to tell whether that patch has been

[Bug 1169030] Re: CVE 2013-1915: local files disclosure or resource exhaustion via XML External Entity attack

2013-04-16 Thread Evan Broder
Ok, here's a patch with the fix for CVE-2012-2751 rolled in. I kind of
made up the DEP-3 fields, but I think they'll at least satisfy their
purpose.

I've tested that the resulting packages with this patch work at at least
a basic level, but I still don't have POCs to test with or anything.

Here's a patch which I believe be a correct backport of the upstream
patch to Lucid (it didn't apply cleanly due to other additions to
modsecurity since Lucid's release). I've verified that it builds but not
yet done any testing - I'll be doing so shortly.

page returns a 200, so backportpackage concludes it doesn't need to pass
-sa.

Not totally sure what the right fix here is. My recollection was that
determining this from using the LP API was difficult, but I haven't
looked at the options in a while.

[Bug 1007042] Re: [backportpackage] fails but worked last week

2012-06-01 Thread Evan Broder
We used to generate backport version numbers of the form
VERSION_BEING_BACKPORTED~RELEASE_CODENAME1. It worked well at the time
because it guaranteed that a backport of the same version to, e.g.,
natty would have a lower version number than the backport to oneiric,
since the n would sort before o. That's important because we rely on the
version numbers sorting like that for release upgrade paths with
backports to work.

Colin pointed out that this would break down when we ran out of letters
and started wrapping around, and suggested that we instead switch to
using the version number, which is what backportpackage now does.

[Bug 948485] Re: Suspend after undocking laptop doesn't work

2012-04-30 Thread Evan Broder
Clayton - Thanks for the update. It does sound like your issue was
different than mine, but I'm glad it was resolved.

(For reference, because it's very difficult to detect whether a laptop
is actually docked, upower instead looks at whether or not multiple
displays are connected to the laptop, and uses that as a proxy for
whether or not the laptop is docked. If you're docking the laptop but
not using an external monitor when you do, upower will never set is-
docked to true.)

[Bug 980746] [NEW] upower does not check dock state on resume from suspend

2012-04-13 Thread Evan Broder
Public bug reported:

Now that gnome-settings-daemon's power management code checks upower's
is-docked flag, it's important that it be accurate.

However, it is possible that the inputs to the is-docked state could
change while the laptop is suspended without generating a drm udev event
to trigger a re-probe.

This is fairly easily reproducible:

 1. Connect external monitor
 2. Suspend using the system menu
 3. Disconnect external monitor
 4. Wake the laptop back up
 5. Close lid

I expect the laptop to go to sleep. However, it does not, because upower
believes the laptop is still docked (you can confirm this by looking for
the is-docked line in upower --dump)

Fix for this issue was committed upstream as
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/upower/commit/?id=6fb36eb5eb85386d2e1c5d9fb760d68053d8afc5

This sounds like it could be related to a bug I just filed (bug

laptop lid. Is that what you see as well?

Could you run upower --dump after reproducing this issue, and paste or

[Bug 852603] Re: hedgewars 0.9.17 can not engage in network play with current release

2012-03-21 Thread Evan Broder
It's unfortunately not that simple. We've always shipped the hedgewars
server as part of our packages. To drop the server in a post-release
update would not be acceptable. However, the Haskell language has
changed enough since early 2010 that the current server will not build
using the Haskell packages from 10.04.

Unless somebody comes up with a patch that allows us to build the 0.9.17
server on Ubuntu 10.04's Haskell stack, an SRU isn't an option.

It may be possible to backport the package. However, due to the
requirements of the backports project, one of 2 things would have to
happen: either the maverick-proposed packages need to be verified in the
next few days (in which case we would backport from maverick-updates to
lucid-backports), or we need to wait a month until maverick is EOL (in
which case backport policies allow us to backport from precise to lucid-
backports). In either case, we need a patch to the packaging to disable
the server so that the package builds on Lucid.

In any case, there's a lot of work that needs to be done to get
hedgewars 0.9.17 into Lucid, and I don't have the time to actively drive
this anymore, so somebody else from the community needs to step up to do
the development work. If there's nobody that can, then it may be time to
accept that we can't offer current versions of hedgewars on an OS that's
2 years old.

[Bug 852603] Re: hedgewars 0.9.17 can not engage in network play with current release

2012-03-21 Thread Evan Broder
Hi Derek -

Currently Ubuntu 11.10 has been updated to hedgewars 0.9.17. There are
pending updates for Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04. However, before we can
release those updates to the general public, they need to be tested, and
so far nobody has stepped up to verify that the new packages work on
those releases.

To test them, please follow the instructions to enable the maverick-
proposed or natty-proposed repositories on your machine
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed) and report back.

We can not release the changes until we have some confidence that they
will work.

[Bug 961807] [NEW] [FFe] New package mosh

2012-03-21 Thread Evan Broder
Public bug reported:

mosh is a remote shell updated for the realities of modern network
connectivity. It supports roaming (automatically reestablishes
connections if they get broken) and predictive local echo (for better
perceived interactivity on high-latency connections)

Version 1.0 of mosh is currently in Debian unstable
(http://packages.qa.debian.org/m/mosh.html), and there are daily builds
available in a PPA (https://launchpad.net/~keithw/+archive/mosh) with
nearly identical packaging.

The maintainer (for both Debian and upstream) has informed me that he
will be releasing 1.1 in the near future, and has asked we hold off
syncing until that is uploaded. Here is the current pending changelog
for 1.1:

2012-03-18 Keith Winstein mosh-de...@mit.edu

* Version 1.1 released (stable release).

* Allows user to specify remote command to execute.

* Only advertises 256 colors when user's terminal has 256
colors.

* Add chaff to datagrams to frustrate statistical analysis of
length

* Cosmetic fixes to terminal handling

* Improved startup script (Anders Kaseorg)

In the mean time, the package has already built in Debian on all
architectures except armel, armhf, and both kfreebsd architectures. I've
verified that the current Debian package builds on Ubuntu without
modifications (log attached), and that the resulting packages work
(modulo some locale issues in my chroot)

adconrad has volunteered to do the srcNEW review in exchange for
cookies.

Since we're late in the release process, I was hoping to get release-
team approval before 1.1 actually landed so I could get this in as
quickly as possible.

[Bug 954747] Re: vpnc, network-manager-vpnc don't support split DNS VPN attribute

2012-03-14 Thread Evan Broder
Here's a patch which queries the VPN server for the list of split DNS
domains and passes it onto the vpnc-script. I've tested that it works
with my company's VPN server, which lists several internal domain names
under the split-dns attribute.

However, it's not currently possible for a NetworkManager VPN plugin to
pass multiple domains back to NM, so that API will need to be enhanced
somehow.

[Bug 948117] Re: Please backport egenix-mx-base 3.2.1-1 from Precise to Oneiric

2012-03-06 Thread Evan Broder
Because packages from backports are not installed by default, we prefer
to only use backports as a way to offer new features, not fix bugs. Bugs
in packages should be fixed through the SRU process
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates), so that all users of the
package can benefit from the fix.

I'm going to go ahead and retarget this as an SRU bug. I'm happy to

[Bug 948117] Re: Please backport egenix-mx-base 3.2.1-1 from Precise to Oneiric

2012-03-06 Thread Evan Broder
Normally we prefer to isolate just the necessary changes to fix the bug.
In this case, though, the entirety of the 3.2.1 release contains
bugfixes. In these cases, we can upload the new release as an SRU.

However, I made a mistake opening an SRU task on this bug, since bug

out this bug and we can move the discussion there.

[Bug 884619] Re: Segfault with comparison to None

2012-03-06 Thread Evan Broder
To clarify above, I chose to update to 3.2.1 not because it's difficult
to isolate the relevant patch, but because all of the changes in the
3.2.1 release fix bugs in the code.

[Bug 934433] Re: [FFe] Multi-Arch version of elfutils wanted for Precise

2012-03-06 Thread Evan Broder
We're carrying a diff for a -Werror=uninitialized build problem. It
doesn't appear to have been fixed upstream. The upstream release carries
new features, so I'll go ahead and put together an upload with just the
multiarch fix.

[Bug 934433] Re: elfutils needs Multi-Arch support

2012-03-05 Thread Evan Broder
Riku - Thanks for the patch. However, we were past FeatureFreeze when
you filed this bug, and the current stance of the release team is that
multiarchification requires a FFe
(http://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess). Could you fill one out?

Also, the patch that you uploaded to this bug appears to be slightly
different from what the Debian maintainer actually uploaded. Can you
update your patch to match what Debian did so that we can keep the diff
minimal going forward? (I realize this will just be a sync for Q, but it
would be good to make sure we're consistent)

I'm going to go ahead and unsubscribe ubuntu-sponsors for the time
being, but feel free to resubscribe them if you feel you've addressed
those concerns.

[Bug 926889] Re: Ubuntu gtk leaks references in GtkTreeView / GtTreeModelSort which cause segfault in bluefish

2012-03-03 Thread Evan Broder
The commit message certainly leaves a lot to be desired. On the one
hand, the commit is definitely fixing a bug in the reference tracking of
the info struct, and it avoids storing pointers to the stack which are
almost immediately invalidated. On the other hand, while I would expect
either of those bugs to cause crashes, I don't see how either of those
bugs could affect whether or not there's an extra reference to the
GtkTreeModelSort - causing the crash that Olivier describes - but that
may just be because of my weak understanding of the whole GtkTree* set
of classes.

I'm personally not willing to sponsor this into the archive proper
without a better sense of whether or not it will fix the bug at hand.

Olivier: Do you have a concise set of instructions on how to reproduce
the bug using Bluefish?

For the time being, I'm going to upload the patch to my PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~broder/+archive/ubuntu-tests). If somebody can
show me some evidence that this particular patch fixes this particular
bug, I'd be happy to upload the change.

[Bug 712015] Re: package mpd 0.16.1-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-03-03 Thread Evan Broder
I'm going to go ahead and close this. This was fixed in the 0.16.1-2

include that fix.

[Bug 946001] [NEW] [sponsor-patch] Allow specifying branch instead of bug

2012-03-03 Thread Evan Broder
Public bug reported:

It would be helpful if I could specify a UDD branch instead of a bug
number for sponsorship.

For MP-based sponsorship items, the branch is what appears in the
sponsorship queue, so finding a bug to give sponsor-patch is an extra
step. Occasionally, these merge proposals aren't connected to a bug (due
to the contributor committing directly instead of using --fixes or
debcommit), requiring an extra step to link the branch to the bug. Still
more occasionally, I sponsor changes that don't reference a bug
directly. I'd prefer to avoid the extra bureaucracy of opening a ticket
just to close it, but also appreciate the checks that sponsor-patch
already does for me.

[Bug 903044] Re: Please convert gtkmm2.4 to multiarch

2012-02-29 Thread Evan Broder
ABorland: This bug specifically covers multiarching gtkmm2.4; I'm not
personally interested in multiarching gtkmm3.0. As this one has already
been fixed, any discussion on it won't be noticed going forward. If
you'd like to see gtkmm3.0 multiarched, could you please open a separate
bug against that package?

However, please note that Ubuntu is now in FeatureFreeze, and
multiarchification is considered a feature, so multiarching gtkmm3.0
would require a FeatureFreezeException

[Bug 884402] Re: package libapache2-mod-shib2 2.4.3+dfsg-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-02-27 Thread Evan Broder
Looks like Jamie slightly misread the bug history. I'm working on this
now, though.

Russ - thanks for adopting the patch.

However, it looks like Ubuntu is behind Debian on the libmemcached
transition. Since we're past our feature freeze, we won't be updating
for Precise, so I can't do a simple sync of the Debian package. I'm
therefore sponsoring David's original change, as that's equivalent to
what ended up in Debian.

[Bug 858122] Re: incomplete migration to /run (shutdown script order has been demolished)

2012-02-23 Thread Evan Broder
I've uploaded SRUs of insserv to lucid, maverick, natty, and oneiric.
Based on IRC discussions with Steve, I added a postinst to those
versions that cleans up the broken shutdown sequence. It's the same
snippet that I added to initscripts, but for the SRU case, ensuring
correct ordering of the upgrade is too difficult.

[Bug 884402] Re: package libapache2-mod-shib2 2.4.3+dfsg-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2012-02-16 Thread Evan Broder
Russ, I'm a little confused here.

As far as I can tell, Ubuntu has not modified update-rc.d at all from
what Debian ships. You can confirm this by looking at the most recent
collection of Ubuntu changelog entries in
http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/s/sysvinit/sysvinit_2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu9/changelog,
since we re-list all changes from Debian every time we merge.

Or you could just compare the two scripts:

evan@caron:~$ schroot -c precise-amd64 sha1sum /usr/sbin/update-rc.d
6943e40e473cb3980af37be59aa9f26c745fe9c5 /usr/sbin/update-rc.d
evan@caron:~$ schroot -c sid-amd64 sha1sum /usr/sbin/update-rc.d
6943e40e473cb3980af37be59aa9f26c745fe9c5 /usr/sbin/update-rc.d

I haven't actually read update-rc.d yet, but it sounds like this could
be caused by differences between dependency-based and legacy ordering.
Is it possible that there's a bug there? And if so, would that be
sufficient justification to adopt a change like this into the Debian
packaging?

[Bug 858122] Re: incomplete migration to /run (shutdown script order has been demolished)

2012-02-15 Thread Evan Broder
Hi Adam -

Thanks for working on getting that patch together. I've gone ahead and
sponsored it into precise, and will be working on an SRU for oneiric
momentarily. For future reference, I made a few tweaks before uploading:

 1. The insserv package is source format 3.0 (quilt), so it uses quilt
to manage patches (http://developer.ubuntu.com/packaging/html/patches-
to-packages.html#patches-with-quilt). I created a quilt patch containing
your change. We also try to apply the DEP-3 guidelines in distro patches
so we can track their provenance down the road
(http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep3/)

 2. Your changelog entry targets unstable - Ubuntu changes should
always refer to the Ubuntu release they're targeting; in this case, that
would be precise

 3. When Ubuntu changes a Debian package, our policy is to adjust the
maintainer field in debian/control - the update-maintainer script in
ubuntu-dev-tools will do this for you automatically. It's also our
policy to adjust the Vcs-* fields to be XSBC-Debian-Vcs-*. update-
maintainer doesn't currently do this, so you have to do it yourself (bug
#567629)

I'm also working on a change to initscripts to try and clean up some of
the fallout of this bug for people who have hit it; hopefully that
should land later today.

Joonas: If you have not yet installed VMware Workstation 8, just
removing /usr/sbin/insserv should be sufficient (nothing on an Ubuntu
system should actually use it). If you have, run the series of mv
commands in the bug's description

[Bug 917088] Re: lsb_release crashed with SIGABRT in Py_FatalError()

2012-02-15 Thread Evan Broder
I ran into this error while installing VMware Player on Precise. I
believe I've tracked it down to the environment that the VMware
installer sets.

/usr/lib/vmware-installer/2.0/python/init.sh:

if [ -z $_VMIS_INIT_PYTHON ]; then
export PYTHON_ROOT=$VMWARE_INSTALLER/python

. $PYTHON_ROOT/pygtk/init.sh

export PYTHONHOME=`dirname $PYTHON_ROOT`
export
PYTHONPATH=$PYTHON_ROOT/lib:$PYTHON_ROOT/lib/lib-dynload:$PYTHONPATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$PYTHON_ROOT/lib/libsqlite3:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

PYTHON=$PYTHON_ROOT/python

export PYTHON
export _VMIS_INIT_PYTHON=1
fi

Setting PYTHONHOME as init.sh sets it is enough to get python3.2mu to
abort:

evan@evan-precise-amd64:~$ PYTHONHOME=/usr/lib/vmware-installer/2.0/python
/usr/bin/python3.2mu /usr/bin/lsb_release -sd

[Bug 682338] Re: GTK programs in Ubuntu 10.10 are sluggish over NX

2012-02-14 Thread Evan Broder
Unfortunately it's a little more complicated than just which X server
Ubuntu 12.04 contains. If you were to, say, X-forward an application
from an Ubuntu 12.04 machine to a machine with an old server, you could
crash that X server. Ideally, we would patch cairo to specifically
detect the NX agent's X server, but I haven't been able to come up with
a way to do that.

After consulting with Sebastien, I've come up with the attached patch,
which still disables the workaround for buggy repeat, but only for the
specific X version that that the NX agent advertises. While our best
judgement is that the NX agent is likely to be significantly more common
than X-forwarding to an X server from 7 years ago, I'd still like to
limit the scope of the change.

I've uploaded a test build with this patch to my PPA
(http://launchpad.net/~broder/+archive/ubuntu-tests); it should build
and be available shortly. I'll attempt to test it, but if people who
actively use NX could test it as well, that would be appreciated.
Assuming no snags, I'll plan to upload it to the archive in the next few
days.

(In the mean time, I'm going to go ahead and unsubscribe ubuntu-
sponsors, but I'll keep an eye on the bug myself)

[Bug 898003] Re: usbip source is maintained in kernel tree now

2012-02-14 Thread Evan Broder
Thanks for your work on getting these packages updated, and I'm sorry
that it's taken so long to get this looked at.

I asked the kernel team about building the usbip packages as part of the
kernel build process:

1:18 PM broder i'm wondering whether or not it would be plausible to
incorporate the usbip userspace pieces into the kernel package build (there's a
client, a server, and a library), or whether we should keep snapshotting the
source from the kernel into a separate source package
1:19 PM tgardner broder, looking
1:23 PM tgardner broder, this is still a staging driver. while we have a
mechanism for building and distributing applications from the kernel source
tree, I'm not sure I wanna bother with a staging driver.
1:25 PM broder tgardner: ok. that's reasonable. it doesn't seem like it's
going through a whole lot of churn anyway
1:26 PM broder i'll work on updating the separate package
1:26 PM tgardner broder, maybe we can pick it up when it gets promoted to
mainline

For now, I'm going to mark the bug task on Linux as invalid.

I'm also happy to try and review your packing updates. I have a few
questions/concerns so far:

 - Where did the -2.5- in the version number come from? Was that the
kernel version number when you snapshotted it? I'm assuming at this
point that the package is out of date from the current kernel

 - Since the 3.0.0 version of the packaging was never uploaded to
Ubuntu, there should only be a single changelog entry for 3.2.0
(similarly, the debian/NEWS file should be updated)

 - The changelog should be more explicit about changes to the packaging.
In particular, it would be good to see some discussion about the
debian/header/* files

 - Please use XS-Debian-Vcs-Browser and -Vcs-Git instead of -Original-
(see https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
devel/2007-March/023332.html)

 - As more of a wishlist thing, we generally prefer dkms-based kernel
module packages over module-assistant based ones these days. It would be
excellent to have a usbip-dkms in addition to (or instead of) usbip-
source

If you'd like to update the packaging to address all of these, that's
fine. If not, I'm happy to do the cleanup, but I need a hint on the
version number to move forward.

(I'm unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors for the time being, but feel free to
resubscribe them when you feel you've addressed my concerns)

[Bug 903098] Re: Please merge (sort of) couchdb 1.1.1-1 from Debian testing

2012-02-10 Thread Evan Broder
Hi Jason -

In the future, I'd strongly encourage falling back to debdiffs instead
of bzr branches when you run into this much trouble getting the bzr MPs
to do what you want. I don't want to blame you for the tardiness of the
review here - that's clearly a failure of the development and
sponsorship teams - but I do think that a debdiff on this bug would have
gotten more eyeballs than the MP in its current state.

After a lot of staring, though, I think I'm mostly satisfied with this
change. I only really have one issue:

/etc/couchdb/local.ini and /etc/couchdb/local.d/ were moved from
couchdb-bin to couchdb. This means that couchdb should probably Replace
couchdb-bin (= 1.0.1-0ubuntu18) in order to ensure a smooth upgrade.
Does moving the file between packages trigger a conffile conflict if the
user hasn't otherwise changed /etc/couchdb/local.ini?

It's a little unfortunate that couchdb-bin used to create the couchdb
user/group and never bothered to clean them up on uninstall, but I think
that may be a historical turd we'll have to live with.

Modulo the conffile conflict question, I'm satisfied with this. Jason,
if you can add the missing Replaces, do some testing around that, and
report back, I'd be happy to sponsor the change. I'm particularly
interested to know whether the user is prompted on upgrade if they
haven't changed the local.ini file.

Thanks for the contribution!

[Bug 919058] [NEW] libstdc++ gdb Python hooks cause warnings from ldconfig

Public bug reported:

[Bug 915029] Re: youtube-dl broken on older releases

2012-01-16 Thread Evan Broder
Martin: Thanks as always - I've tested the Lucid package, and I'm able
to download Youtube videos.

Rogerio: Normally, we sync packages in unstable into our development
release automatically. For the current release (12.04 / precise), we're
syncing from testing. You can explicitly request that we sync a package
using the requestsync program, which is in ubuntu-dev-tools (in both
Debian and Ubuntu)

For our stable releases, our process
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates) generally requires
minimal patches in order to minimize regression risk, but we can
generally relax that for software that has already regressed due to
changes in external services. You can either go through the process on
the wiki page (open a bug with an appropriate description, generate a
debdiff, and attach it to the bug), but you should also feel free to try
and find somebody in #ubuntu-motu on Freenode to supervise the SRU
process. At least for the moment, I'm comfortable volunteering to do
that, so feel free to ping me (broder) directly.

[Bug 887946] Re: Deadlocks in main loop

2012-01-16 Thread Evan Broder
I'm unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors from this bug. Merge-proposals
requesting a review from ubuntu-sponsors or ubuntu-branches (the
default) automatically show up in our queue for sponsorship.
Additionally subscribing ubuntu-sponsors creates an extra entry, so it
should only be used when attaching a debdiff to a bug, not when opening
a merge proposal

[Bug 915029] [NEW] youtube-dl broken on older releases

2012-01-11 Thread Evan Broder
Public bug reported:

[Impact] youtube-dl can not download videos from youtube on any release
older than oneiric

[Development fix] Fixed in oneiric by updating to the latest release of
youtube-dl

[Stable fix] youtube-dl's primary functionality of downloading Youtube
videos has been regressed due to external changes in the Youtube
service, therefore I think it's reasonable to update the older releases
to the new upstream version to correct the regression

[Test case] Run youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdUGJSknnWM;

When youtube-dl is broken, this prints out:
root@zygorthian-space-raiders:~# youtube-dl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdUGJSknnWM
[youtube] Setting language
[youtube] UdUGJSknnWM: Downloading video webpage
[youtube] UdUGJSknnWM: Downloading video info webpage
[youtube] UdUGJSknnWM: Extracting video information
ERROR: no fmt_url_map or conn information found in video info

When youtube-dl is working, this prints out:
evan@caron:~$ youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdUGJSknnWM
[youtube] Setting language
[youtube] UdUGJSknnWM: Downloading video webpage
[youtube] UdUGJSknnWM: Downloading video info webpage
[youtube] UdUGJSknnWM: Extracting video information
[download] Destination: UdUGJSknnWM.webm
[download] 100.0% of 8.73M at 664.14k/s ETA 00:00

[Regression potential] Moderate, as this is a significant update, but it
also corrects for a regression which has already occurred.

2012-01-05 Thread Evan Broder
ubuntu-sponsors should only be subscribed to a bug once there's a patch
or debdiff or some sort of fix that needs sponsorship; it's not for bugs
that still need diagnosis. I'm going to unsubscribe the list.
