[Bug 865672] Re: Adobe Flash Player Settings dialog does not respond to mouse clicks

2014-06-05 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
You could try:

1) use tab key and space bar to navigate through the settings dialog

2) Install gnome-session-flashback via software center

a href=apt://gnome-session-flashbackGNOME session flashback/a

after installing logout, and before logging in click on ubuntu icon and
choose GNOME session flashback metacity

[Bug 1081231] [NEW] GIMP cannot drag droppable dialog to toolbox

2012-11-20 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.10 i'm not able to drag a dockable dialog to the toolbox
dialog althoug the toolbox says You can drop dockable dialogs here. I
want to restore by tool options, for somehow i accidentally deleted
this dock from the toolbox. Only way for me to do this now is to restore
all options in GIMP, dragging would be a lot easier.

[Bug 1081234] [NEW] Main menu not visible when active (top) dock

2012-11-20 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

Using the GIMP in Unity is anoying for everytime a dock is the active
window, you have to first click on the image window to be able to see
the main menu.

For example:

when you just selected a tool, you have to click on the menu before it
appears. This is one unneeded extra step and in the GIMP the main menu
is very important for functionailty.

[Bug 1081241] [NEW] Toolbox window handlers not visible after closing and reopening toolbox

2012-11-20 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

After closing the toolbox window (by clicking the close button) and
reopening it from the menu window - new toolbox, the toolbox
reappears, but i cannot see the window handlers (close button, drag
handle). I've attached a screenshot to show what goes wrong.

The toolbox opens as a very hight 1 column toolbox, therefore it takes
up all the vertical space and the window handler is hidden at the top
end of the screen.

Re: [Bug 865672] Re: Adobe Flash Player Settings dialog does not respond to mouse clicks

2012-11-15 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I agree that Adobe Flash Player is a semi-abandod piece of software, but
it will take years before Flash will be completely gone from the
internet. Maybe it will take 15 years. Everybody knows that ie6's
lifetime was way too long. Some functionality provided by Flash is not
supported by other techniques, like video conferencing. It will take
years before other techniques will be mainstream to support this and
flash will be the only way to provide cross-browser, cross-platform
video conference (webcam and audio) support. Flash is too important on
the internet at the moment to have such a big bug in linux. I have
developed a chat site and the only way to support webcam chat with audio
is using flash. On linux this is always problematic and going to the
global settings just isn't a good solution.

On 11/15/2012 01:39 AM, Robert Charlton wrote:
Robert Zelic, that's odd. I you sure it's not a problem specific to
yourself? If it isn't, I think we'll need a whole other bug report just
for adobe-flash-plugin. Then again, IMO, we should be focusing on open
source alternatives rather than try to bandage this semi-abandoned piece
 of software.

[Bug 1069466] Re: All text displayed on black background text totally unreadable

2012-10-23 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Janez Stupar is right. I restarted in Ubuntu, checked for updates and
the following update was done:

xserver-xorg-video-intel:amd64
(2.20.10+git20121015.b42d81b6-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise,
2.20.12+git20121022.4dfc8335-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise)

After that i restarted Ubuntu and the problem was solved :-) This bug
can be closed if others also find the above update to be an solution to
their problem.

uninstalling bumblebee, but i suspect the problem has to do with some
kind of upgrade to the intel graphics / xorg.

[Bug 1037530] [NEW] first run wizard missing after install

2012-08-16 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

I've taken a look at theinstaller design specification and i think one
major thing is missing. A post-installation wizard / first run wizard.
This could be used to postpone actions wich the user does not want to do
directly on installing or are not possible to do directly on installing.

Some possible scenarios where this would be useful:

Scenario 1:
User wants to Install from sync, but password is stored in a password manager
he or she cannot access just yet. Or the user forgot the password and can use
the normal way of retreiving the password after install and provide it to the
first run wizard.

Scenario 2:
User just wants to install quickly and postpones some installer options. The
post installation wizard will notice this an will provide a way to do this at
a later time when Ubuntu is already installed.

Scenario 3:
After installation in the future options could be provided to sync programm
settings like: e-mailsettings, social-media settings, chat settings,
Without having to alter the installation process

Scenario 4:
Detecting all kinds of network attached devices like printers, scanners, NAS'es

Scenario 5:
Provide a way to introduce user to services like Ubuntu one if user is not
already on it and help with signing up, same for software center account

Scenario 6:
We thank you for installing Ubuntu and we would like to ask you to contribute
to the community by testing your system (this will also benefit the user itself
for bugs will be reported to friendly.ubuntu.com) and if the user wants to do
this run system-testing. Also a option could be provided in system-testing to
report non working parts of the computer (for example i have a button on my
Asus N56vm which is a quick-launcher in windows, this does not work in ubuntu,
but it is nice for friendly.ubuntu.com to know an possibly create a bug-report
automatically in launchpad.

Scenario 7:
More info about the way the community works and emphasize that everyone can
contribute. Explain the ways the users can contribute like translating,
reporting bugs, write code, spreading the word, etc.

I think some of these things are not suitable in the installer, but are
useful in a Post installation wizard which the user can run at the
time he or she chooses. It could for example contain the options Remind
me later and skip this wizard.

Some difficult choices during installation can be postponed

should also mention this when trying to install using an 32-bit

[Bug 1017880] Re: Windows7 EFI not detected by os-prober

2012-08-16 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Also see meta-bug Bug #1037351

Could not install Ubuntu for the installer did not see my windows
installation and existing gpt partitions. It wanted to install on the
full hard drive space! By doing so, i would have destroyed both my
windows installation and recovery partition! This is very serious for
inexperienced users! I had to find a way to let the installer see
windows. After a lot of searching forums i found a (not ideal) solution:
Removing the recovery partition of windows. Apparantly the last X blocks
of a hard drive should be available for Ubuntu to see windows installed.
After i removed the recovery partition, in the windows partitioner,
Ubuntu installed just fine on a partition i wanted to use.

Please also add to 'Installer design' documentation. There should be a
double check (or a working check) to see if another OS is already
installated, otherwise this could lead to data-loss for inexperienced or
unconcentrated users.

his knowledge can be used to make for a good dual boot experience using

[Bug 1037198] [NEW] Unity dock / menu gone after cancelling logout due to running programs with unsaved changes

2012-08-15 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

When a program has unsaved changes and one logs out of Ubuntu (with
unity 2d) the Unity dock / menu is gone after cancelling logout.

Way to reproduce in Unity (2d in my case):

- Open Gedit and type some text
- Do NOT save
- Go to system icon and press 'Shut down...'
- System will tell you :
--
' a programm is still running:'
Gedit
This program is blocking logout
Waiting for the program to finish. Interupting the program may cause you to
lose work.

[Lock Screen] [Cancel] [Restart Anyway]

- The unity menu has already disappeared at this point
- Click 'Cancel'
- The Unity dock / menu won't come back

The sollution would be if the Unity menu would only hide after logout has been
confirmed
OR reshow unity after cancelling

[Bug 1037210] [NEW] Ubiquity should suggest connecting to a wireless network earlier

2012-08-15 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

During the install of Ubuntu (on a notebook) a screen comes up with 3
checks

- a check for minimum required disk space
- a check if connected to power
- a check for an internet connection

That is nice although when someone is not connected to an internet
connection, i think the 3rd option should contain a button with setup
wireless internet connection (or even a setup cabled connection) maybe
an blue info button or question button that explains how to connect
using a cabled an most importantly a wireless connection.

Now if no internetconnection is present a user will hesitate to click
next because one of the checks fails. I think we cannot assume the user
knows that he or she has to click the network icon in the top right
corner.

The strange thing is that when an user goes to the next screen suddenly
a dialog pops up to connect to an internetconnection. In my opinion
this screen should appear earlier, or the other suggestion should be
implemented.

2012-08-15 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
After looking throug many forum entries i managed ubuntu to see the
installed windows 7 by removing the windows recovery partition.
(WARNING: don't do this if you are not familiar with reinstalling
windows without using the recovery tools for your computer)

I booted windows and removed the partition in windows. After restarting
the Ubuntu installer windows 7 was detected. I read somewhere this is
caused by a file that wants to be at the end of the disk and that a
minimum of X blocks on the end of the disked should be reserved for
this. Using gdisk before i removed the windows recovery partition said:
“overlapping the last partition by xx blocks..

I wanted to dual-boot Ubuntu with Windows, but as i use Ubuntu 99% of
the time i just wanted Ubuntu to work, no matter what the costs. So i
deleted the recovery partition (after making backups of it using asus
tools). And Ubuntu installed just wonderful. Unfortunately the UEFI /
GRUB / MBR / whatever problems still don't allow me to start windows,
but hey Ubuntu is working just fine!

[Bug 1037351] [NEW] dual booting with UEFI (EFI) and windows and gpt partitions and grub is a real struggle

2012-08-15 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

I finally managed to get a working dualboot with Ubuntu 12.04 and
Windows 7. This has been a real struggle unfortunately. This process
should be improved and in my opinion this bug should be critical for
many PC's are shipped with windows installed on gpt partitions and UEFI
defaults to on in BIOS.

How i finally managed to install was:

- Problem 1

I donwloaded the 32-bit version of Ubuntu which does not support UEFI
install. I always install 32-bit due to better support for some
applications. The website does not tell that for UEFI i have to download
the 64 bit version.

- Problem 2

The installation medium (in my case USB) has to be started with the UEFI
prefix.

- Problem 3

Could not install Ubuntu for the installer did not see my windows installation
and existing gpt partitions. It wanted to install on the full hard drive space!
By doing so, i would have destroyed both my windows installation and recovery
partition! This is very serious for inexperienced users! I had to find a way to
let the installer see windows. After a lot of searching forums i found a (not
ideal) solution: Removing the recovery partition of windows. Apparantly the
last X blocks of a hard drive should be available for Ubuntu to see windows
installed. After i removed the recovery partition, in the windows partitioner,
Ubuntu installed just fine on a partition i wanted to use.

- Problem 4

Grub was installed and this is nice, but windows did not start up. I got
the message 'invalid EFI path'. After searching the forums i downloaded
an application called boot-repair. This application took care of all
the, very complex, details of setting up the grub bootloader. I now
enjoy a dualboot with windows and Ubuntu. Both are working just fine.

It's a pity that installing Ubuntu next to windows is such a struggle.

[Bug 682198] Re: Keyboard backlight does not function under Ubuntu - workaround needed

2012-08-11 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
On my new notebook (ASUS N56VM) the backlights did not work by default
so i googled and found the following:

---
or N56V and N76V, you need :

a 3.5 kernel (from quantal)
to get the subwoofer
I add on /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf this line: options
snd-hda-intel model=asus-mode4
reboot and select 2.1 output in audio pref
to get the fn keys + keyboard backlight
install asus-wmi-dkms_0.2_all.deb.gz package (from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12057336postcount=49)
reboot
to get the GeForce (when you want)
install bumblebee and driver from x-swat repository
to get the Ethernet
build/install alx module
(http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/networking/alx)
---
on the URL:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/166261/keyboard-backlight-not-working-on-an-asus-n56v

It would be nice if the packageasus-wmi-dkms_0.2_all.deb.gz would be
installed by default for the N56V and N76V series. Don't know how to
report this, that's why i comment here in this thread instead of making
a new bug.

mentioned package. :-) As well as the function keys accept for the
screen brightness.

[Bug 973270] Re: Printer does not provide REQUIRED job history.

2012-07-13 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I'm also experiencing these problems.

But in my case i am able to print text from gedit and print HTML
(including images) from Firefox. I cannot however print from Inkskape or
print a PDF from Evince. I've updated to cups 1.5.3 and installed the
latest version of HPLIP. Model HP CP1515n and worked flawlessly in the
previous 11.10 release.

For your information ipp is not directly listed as an option in the list
when i try to install one of these printers. I can choose between HPLIP
and Appsocket/HP jetdirect.

[Bug 973270] Re: Printer does not provide REQUIRED job history.

2012-07-13 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I think the three important lines in my error_log file are:

D [13/Jul/2012:22:33:47 +0200] [Job 42] Operand stack:
D [13/Jul/2012:22:33:47 +0200] [Job 42] true --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- true --nostringval-- .LockSafetyParams
true %MediaSource 0 %MediaDestination 0 LeadingEdge 0 --nostringval--
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- 0 --nostringval-- false --nostringval--
D [13/Jul/2012:22:33:47 +0200] [Job 42] Rendering completed

I've also tested printing an image from EOG and that works! It seems
like problems only occur when the printer has to deal with raster vector
images like PDF and SVG.

[Bug 973270] Re: Printer does not provide REQUIRED job history.

2012-07-13 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Thank you Till. My fault, the page was setup as A3 in the print dialog
of Evince. Although it is strange that the job gets marked as stop in
the printer spool and HPLIP says job completed. I think both should
report an error instead. Will report this in bug 998156. It seems like
the newest cup 1.5.3. fixes the general print problems.

[Bug 998156] Re: GTK Print dialog sends broken custom page size attribute: PageSize=Custom.Custom.widthxlength

2012-07-13 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I experience a bug similar to the one descriped above. Due to a wrong
setting of paper-size A3 in the print dialog instead of A4. My printer
HP CP1515CN does not support A3 paper format and i should not be able to
select this size (correct me if wrong). When trying to print, the
graphical spool just says: stopped. HPLIP reports job completed. The
cups error_log is attached here. I have another printer the Brother MFC
5890CN which does support A3. It seems like the page setting of A3 was
left from when i printed with this brother printer some time ago. Since
then i could not print due to the bug 973270, so i only start noticing
it now. I think hower that in case of errors in the error log, the
graphical spool should say something more informative than stopped,
something like error. Maybe this bring you guys closer to solving this
problem. After setting the correct size of A4 i was able to print again
from Evince.

[Bug 998156] Re: GTK Print dialog sends broken custom page size attribute: PageSize=Custom.Custom.widthxlength

2012-07-13 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
From within Inkscape i cannot print. I think this has to do with me not
being able to select the paper size (Papiergroote) of A4. Somehow it
is set to custom, although i've set my paper size to A4 in the
inkscape document. See the attached screenshot to see that the paper
size field is disabled. I will als include a screenshot of the
graphical print spool (don't know what it's called) so that you can see
that the status is stopped (Gestopt).

One more screen shot. After a print does not succeed, probably due to
incorrect or custom paper size after reopening the print dialog the
printer's status is marked as failed as shown in the attached

Re: [Bug 1016181] Re: ath chip reset failed

2012-06-22 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I've succesfully installed the following debs

linux-image-3.5.0-030500rc3-generic_3.5.0-030500rc3.201206162135_i386.deb
linux-image-extra-3.5.0-030500rc3-generic_3.5.0-030500rc3.201206162135_i386.deb

System starts up normally. :-)

Today i did not experience the problem with the older kernel, so te
problem seems to have an unsteady interval (sometimes several times 5+
times a day, sometimes not at all). I will try for a few days and see if
the problem occurs again and do as you mentioned according to the test
results.

Thanks

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-
 upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
 tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
 please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
 Confirmed.

[Bug 1010678] [NEW] Adobe Flash settings non-clickable unity3d not unity2d

2012-06-08 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

The Flash plugin does not respond to clicks when running in Unity3d.
Right clicking also function very buggy. I have to click several times 4
- 10 time before a context-menu apears. I've installed the offical Adobe
Flash plugin. A lot of people are experiencing this problem when looking
for help in fora. Some say it's a regression and that it did work in
Ubuntu 11.10. I cannot confirm this.

The problem occurs in Google Chrome and Firefox, though in Chrome i did
not get a settings panel at all. According to others this prolem also
exists in Chromium, but i've not tried this.

When signing in with Unity2d i am able to right click - go to settings
and change the settings in the flash settings panel.

As you will know Adobe stopped upgrading Flash Plugin for linux, but i
fear that there will not be any cross-browser sollutions for video and
audio chatting in the next few years.

I also think this is not an Adobe problem, for what i've read in the
fora. Manypeople say this occurs whenever using a dock. An serveral
people suggested switch to Unity2d solved the problem. It als did in my
case. But this is not a good sollution in my opinion because you loose
the advantages of the Unity3d dock.

Some people suggested running 64 bit ubuntu also works, i only have a
production machine, so i'm not able to try this.

2 links to fora:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/105261/not-able-to-change-flash-settings

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=978212page=5

Please look at this. Flash camera an audio support is to important for
general users to be buggy or non-functional.

[Bug 998367] Re: fingerprint login in ubuntu 12.04 can't access encrypted home user account

2012-06-08 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
I have not tried to store the key on another partition. I fact i removed
the fingerprint functionality, for it is too buggy at the moment.
Fingerprints are not recognised a lot of times. Only one scan per finger
as reference causes this i suspect. Also it crashed several times and
caused a white block in the bottom half of the screen. The graphics of
the interface are also outdated and not in the same style of Ubuntu.
Thats why i disabled it again. Maybe in the future i will try again.

[Bug 998367] Re: fingerprint login in ubuntu 12.04 can't access encrypted home user account

2012-05-14 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
In the fingerprint GUI you will have to store your password on an
external device (only USB works in my case. Memory Card is not seen as
an external device sadly).

After you have saved it to an USB stick i can login to an encrypted home
dir. The stick will always have to be plugged for login into an
encrypted home directory.

I hope this is of help.

[Bug 999139] [NEW] fingerprint reader Authentec, inc AES1600

2012-05-14 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

If i'm correct Ubuntu supports fingerprint readers in user accounts as i
read on the page: https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/session-
fingerprint.html

I cannot find a list of supported devices, but do know that my device is
not natively supported.

I installed Fingerprint Gui and it does support my fingerprint reader.

It would be nice to add the driver for AES1600 from authentec to Ubuntu
and the supported devices as well as the others supported by fingerprint
GUI. I'm not a driver developer, but as Fingerprint GUI can find the
fingerprint reader i think it should not be too difficult to incorporate
it in Ubuntu. Or am i wrong?

Althoug Fingerprint gui works somewhat stable. It does crash sometimes
and the look of it is not native and nice in my honest opinion.

Maybe someone with experience can tell me if fingerprint gui (at least
the driver part) can be incorporated in Ubuntu?

Thanks for all your good work!

2012-05-04 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
The right click on maximized windows should be included again, i really miss
this feature. Now when i put a window always on top, i have to
1- umaximize window
2- put it always on top
3- maximize it again

Really confusing. Please do not remove right click from umaximized
windows and add it again for maximized windows.

[Bug 994880] [NEW] ALT F2 opens with all text selected when trying to append all input is lost

2012-05-04 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

ALT F2 opens with all text selected i think caret should be at end of
input

Example:

open by pressing alt + F2
- type ubuntu-bug (or anything else)
- hide the window by pressing somewhere outside of it
- press alt + F2 again
- All text in the input is selected
- I want to append something so i press - (right arrow)
- All text stays selected caret is at the end of the text now
- i type something i want to append
- all text that was there is now lost.

I think pressing the right arrow should deselect the selection so that i
can append something to the text that is already present.

2012-05-03 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
Public bug reported:

Also see http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/29574/

When installing Ubuntu it does a few checks. One of these checks is
whether internet access is available. If not it reports no internet
access is avaialable, but i think it would be better to suggest
connecting to a wireless network or connecting the device with a cable
to modem / router. New users will not find the icon in the right top
corner to connect to a network. This would make installing even easier i
think.

[Bug 916718] Re: FF 9.0.1 on ubuntu always crashes after upgrading from FF 8

2012-01-15 Thread Evertjan Garretsen
In my case firefox crashes when the console tab of Firebug is active.
When i disable the console tab FF does not crash. I use Firebug on a
site which makes heavy usage of console.log. Maybe this info can help
locating / fixing the bug. Before upgrading to 9.0.1. i experienced no
problems with the usage of the console in Firebug whatsoever.

See my bug report #787809 for complete information.

My ASUS x56TR freezes when power cord is unplugged or plugged. I've
updated my BIOS to the newest version - no success. Adding acpi=off

long enough to be certain.
