I did that yesterday, still got crashes. Then installed 855gm-fix. Still
have the problem, but seems slightly less frequent. These fixes found at:

Random crashes, always required an reboot to recover, got so bad I
stopped using the machine for a while.

Googled for a solution, got one which seems to fix it.

Open a terminal enter the following:-

 echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf

 Reboot the box.
Now using the GX260 daily, no crashes since.

2010-07-10 Thread Jim Frey
It's been four months with no progress. I have been with Linux since around
1995 (Debian with 9 diskettes) and with Ubuntu since Warty Warthog, and I
have never experienced a situation like this. Yeah, it was difficult
configuring X, but it could be done. Is this going to be fixed in Lucid or
do we have to wait for 10.10, or . . .? Can we as users do anything more to
help whoever is working on this? Can we get a progress report?

THese 2 PC works perfectly under Windows XP. Seems that these problems
appears with the xf86 replacement by xorg.

[Bug 566324] [NEW] Xorg crash

2010-04-18 Thread Jim Frey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have been getting crashes for some time, randomly, usually with
Firefox. No crash report or seldom. Symptoms: the screen goes black
with thick vertical lines in the upper third, flashing. No response
from keyboard (can't get to a terminal). Only option is to reboot. So
I booted the recovery option, went a terminal as root, then su'ed to the
user, ran startx. After a while X crashed, but now it comes back to
the terminal, and I get some info. Once it has crashed this way, startx
crashes immediately every time it's run.

The information from the terminal is:
. . .
(==) Using config directory usr/lib/xorg.conf.d
../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gen.c:901: Error getting CPU domain 3: Input/output
error.
Fatal server error

. . .
ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (error 2): Unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (error 3): Server error

This happens more often in Firefox, sometimes in Chrome, once in
Bluefish, never in Freecell!

Mysql had already been installed. I don't know why I got the failed install
message. Since Mysql was already configured, I opted NOT to use
dbconfig-common to configure the settings. Then I got the
error.

Late last night I did a purge remove of phpmyadmin and repeated the
process ACCEPTING to have dbconfig-common configure the settings. That
fixed it.

Thanks for the quick reply, nice to see that. I hope the previous
information
helps.

Re: [Bug 69792] Re: no sound in any device

2006-12-15 Thread Jim Frey
Re-installed e-sound. I now have sound on the headphones, even though the
volume
control and sound windows indicate the 82801DB-IDH4. I cannot switch to the
speakers.

Gnome alsa mixer shows: Masterm Master M, PCM, and Capture ON; CD ON and
Rec
is checked; Headphone is marked MUTE! Mic boost is checked, Mic select and
video
are unchecked.

USB Mixer shows: Bass, treble have no check boxes, so ON; PCM is ON, but if
I check
MUTE it goes off; mic has rec unchecked; bottom window Bass Boost and Auto
gain
control are checked.

I can listen to music on the internet. In the sound and video menu: The CD
Player
freezes or plays with no sound. Totem sometimes plays CD. Mplayer never
finds the
media. All except the CD player frequently report that the device is
busy.

Well, at least I can listen to the internet radio. Will this info help?
Any news or updates?

Re: [Bug 69792] Re: no sound in any device

2006-12-15 Thread Jim Frey
OOPS! After I mailed the last message, (I was dooing some checking while I
was
writing it) ... the sound started going on and off every few seconds, as if
something
was overloading, shutting down and starting up agian. I rebooted. NO
sound. I then
did ps aux and killed an entry for sound: /usr/bin/esd -terminate -nobeeps
-as 1 -spawnfd 16.
I got my sound back on the headphones. I hope this helps.

Re: [Bug 69792] Re: no sound in any device

2006-11-02 Thread Jim Frey
aplay gives: Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/startup.wav' : Signed 16 bit
Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo but no sound. Just hangs there. I
know sound works on this system, I had it on breezy, but I didn't have the
headset then. I will re-install ubuntu sounds.

lspci output attached.

 Please attach ``lspci -vn cat /proc/asound/cards ~/.asoundrc*

Tell us what ``aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav'' in a Terminal
 gives.

2006-11-02 Thread Jim Frey
All switches - loudspeakers and mike on headset - are on. All volume
controls are all the way up. Note: Worked on Breezy, before I had the
headset.

Also, in gnome-volume-control, are all of the switches turned up?

[Bug 69792] no sound in any device

2006-11-01 Thread Jim Frey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-sounds

No sound with intel 82801db-ICH4 or Plantronics headset. Both devices
are detected. In the Sound Preferences window I get the following
results with the test button:

With Autodetect, Intel 82801DB-ICH$-IEC958 and ESD I get a test window
but no sound.

With USB Audio, Intel 82801DB-ICH4, ALSA and OSS, I get:

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Resource busy or not available.

Equipment is Dell Dimension 2400, both alsa and oss installed.

** Affects: ubuntu-sounds (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
