apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected focal snap

** Description changed:

  Since upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS from 18.04.5 LTS, starting Chromium
Browser over a remote X session fails with
  ```
  peter@fs-peter:~$ chromium-browser
  KiTTY X11 proxy: Unsupported authorisation protocol
  ```

  The same happens for apps like `chrome-dominoes` (which, of course, is
  the critical issue ;) ).

  Other applications run over remote X fine (Firefox, Jamulus, several
  other applications).

  Apparently this is not the same as #1897224.

Sorry, "chrome-dominoes" above, is
```
exec /usr/bin/chromium-browser --disable-gpu --profile-directory=Default
--app-id=bomhoanbpkeifgklbpebekfgblgficjn
```
(The "--disable-gpu" was added following a suggestion that it might fix the
issue but it had no effect.)

[Bug 1897224] Re: Graphical snaps can't run in Gnome 3.38 Wayland sessions (can't open X display)

2020-11-07 Thread Peter L Jones
Hi,

I'm running focal (20.04.1 LTS) -- and hit this only just now when
upgrading to the new LTS.

So this is to confirm this affects the LTS release and I'd like to ask
for it back-ported. :)

Thanks,

[Bug 1582007] [NEW] sddm disables keyboard

Public bug reported:

I installed xenial a server initially then added Kubuntu desktop.

Initally, /usr/bin/X was missing - see bug 1563048.

Now sddm starts X okay but the keyboard stops working -- I cannot Ctrl-
Alt-F1 out of the login screen, tab doesn't let me move to another
field, there is not mousepad response (no pointer is displayed).

If I stop sddm, X gets stopped. Without X running, I can then switch to
another terminal.

However, the keyboard LEDs are not working (I do not remember for
certain if they were working but I'm pretty sure they were).

[Bug 1563048] Re: Kubuntu login screen not displayed

2016-05-15 Thread Peter L Jones
@mike-petersen-web - yes, in my case, it's definitely a dependency
issue. I installed 16.04 server and then added Kubuntu Desktop. Whilst
that installed sddm and its service, sddm didn't have any dependency on
xserver-xorg-core, directly or indirectly (which it really should have,
as it's an X display manager and runs /usr/bin/X :) ).

[Bug 1563048] Re: Kubuntu login screen not displayed

Well, that seems simple enough: xserver-xorg-core hadn't been installed.
"apt install xserver-xorg-core" and then "systemctl start sddm" gets me
a greeter.

[Bug 1563048] Re: Kubuntu login screen not displayed

2016-05-13 Thread Peter L Jones
sddm does not start up at all but no error is reported anywhere - see
systemctl checks log attached.

A rather clearer report is given running the command from the console:
root@nuc-peter:/var/log# /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp -auth
/var/run/sddm/{03a073a1-922f-4e49-b7c0-e86bf64358a5} -background none -noreset
-displayfd 17 vt7
bash: /usr/bin/X: No such file or directory

And just to be certain:
root@nuc-peter:/var/log# ls -l /usr/bin/X
ls: cannot access '/usr/bin/X': No such file or directory

sddm itself is installed:
root@nuc-peter:/var/log# which sddm
/usr/bin/sddm

[Bug 199197] Re: [Hardy] mythfilldatabase crashed with SIGSEGV in MythContext::ClearSettingsCache()

2008-12-01 Thread Peter L Jones
Thanks... unfortunately my PC is in the process of slowly dying on me in
general, specifically with Ubuntu it currently won't run X on an rt
kernel (the drivers aren't there?), won't run MythTV on a non-RT kernel,
won't detect my sound (can't load the firmware) and so on... Maybe I'll
try Hardy again (I tried a re-install to Intrepid...) at some point but
until then, I'm without a working Ubuntu system.

apparently the name changed from mode to mode_option in uvesafb (modinfo

[Bug 221197] [NEW] libldap-2.4-2 replaces libldap2 but does not provide it

2008-04-23 Thread Peter L Jones
Public bug reported:

Trying to install WINE from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt requires
libldap2. However, trying to install that package results in:

Package libldap2 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  slapd libldap-2.4-2

Should libldap-2.4-2 provide libldap2 to satisfy the WINE dependency?

2008-03-31 Thread Peter L Jones
 From which version were you upgrading from
DpkgTerminalLog.gz, skip down to line 8151. Everything above that is
irrelevant.
Find samba.  Line 8378:
 Preparing to replace samba 3.0.28a-0ubuntu3 (using
 .../samba_3.0.28a-1ubuntu2_i386.deb) ...

 What was the first version of ubuntu you've installed on the system ?
I've had Ubuntu since 6.04; I've always tracked the /next/ release through the
development cycle.

 Did you modify the default smb.conf file ?
Yes. At line 8604, you'll see my first thought was to try the offered merge
option. Line 8605 shows an unhappy dpkg. I'm not sure what the merge
depends on - maybe I don't have it installed and that error isn't handled well?

 See bug 201059 for more information on the prompt.
Not a dup of that as I have amended the smb.conf file.

 From which version were you upgrading from
DpkgTerminalLog.gz, skip down to line 8151. Everything above that is
irrelevant.
Find samba.  Line 8378:
 Preparing to replace samba 3.0.28a-0ubuntu3 (using
 .../samba_3.0.28a-1ubuntu2_i386.deb) ...

 What was the first version of ubuntu you've installed on the system ?
I've had Ubuntu since 6.04; I've always tracked the /next/ release through the
development cycle.

 Did you modify the default smb.conf file ?
Yes. At line 8604, you'll see my first thought was to try the offered merge
option. Line 8605 shows an unhappy dpkg. I'm not sure what the merge
depends on - maybe I don't have it installed and that error isn't handled well?

 See bug 201059 for more information on the prompt.
Not a dup of that as I have amended the smb.conf file.

[Bug 199197] Re: [Hardy] mythfilldatabase crashed with SIGSEGV in MythContext::ClearSettingsCache()

2008-03-14 Thread Peter L Jones
Tricky. This is a crash on boot of a process executed by the start-up
scripts. I'm not clear on how I'd get the backtrace as I don't have
control of the machine at that point. In fact, I'm having trouble
spotting where during start-up mythfilldatabase gets run -- possibly
it's spawned by the mythbackend binary, just to make life more fun.

There don't appear to be Hardy debug packages for MythTV, either.

Xubuntu Hardy x86_64 install updated with update-manager at 10am cst on

I can confirm this problem with both totem-xine and totem-gstreamer
(/usr/bin/totem was a symlink to /etc/alternatives/totem which in turn
was a symlink to /usr/bin/totem-gstreamer). In my opinion either a GTK

[Bug 173376] Re: cannot bring up a full terminal on Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha1

2007-12-02 Thread Peter L Jones
I'm using fglrx on an ATI 9600 and get the same problem. My keyboard
driver is kbd.

1) I can't use Cltr-Alt-Fn at the login page. Here, the Options-Reboot works.
2) I can't use Cltr-Alt-Fn once logged in. At the desktop, the running man
icon and System-Quit... hang X until Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.

[Bug 172291] [Hardy] mythtv will be removed by dist-upgrade

2007-11-27 Thread Peter L Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

On running a dist-upgrade against the current Hardy repos, I get

The following packages will be REMOVED
  bug-buddy libglib1.2 libgnomekbd1 libgnomekbdui1 libgtk-canvas1
  libgtkmm1.2-0c2a libmpich1.0c2 mytharchive mythdvd mythtv mythtv-backend

Accepted this is Hardy, but I thought it best to flag it as a problem.

[Bug 157163] Re: texlive-base-bin cannot be installed

2007-10-31 Thread Peter L Jones
Okay, someone's removed the dep between Rosegarden and Lilypond, which
at least lets Rosegarden install (a good thing). I don't personally
need the score-writing part, so I'm happy. I guess there's no point
trying to find all the packages that depend on TeX and listing them as
broken ;)...

[Bug 157163] texlive-base-bin cannot be installed

2007-10-25 Thread Peter L Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive-base

The version of texlive-common that is in the repo is 2007-12. However,
this doesn't satisfy texlive-base-bin.

Not having texlive-base-bin breaks anything that needs TeX, such as
Rosegarden.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an
impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some
required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the
package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should
be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

[Bug 145857] Re: [gutsy] thinkpad_acpi oops on thinkpad t22

2007-09-28 Thread L Jones
Apologies for targeting the initial report to acpi-support.

Further information:

This occurs on a fresh install using http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu
/daily-live/20070923/gutsy-desktop-i386.iso. I reinstalled to minimize
upgrade errors. The kernel update afterwards produces the same oops (and
is what was used in the dmesg).

several of the /proc/acpi/ibm/ entries are missing which can cause monitoring
applications to fail.
$ ls /proc/acpi/ibm/
driver  hotkey  light  video

I tried patching the ubuntu source with thinkpad_acpi 0.16 (patches
clean with offsets) but that still produces an oops.

I then tried vanilla 2.6.22.9 from kernel.org and patch with 0.16 and there is
no oops and the missing entries are back.
$ ls /proc/acpi/ibm
beep driver fan led thermal volume
brightness  ecdump  hotkey  light  video

In both cases .config was produced by copying
/boot/config-2.6.22-12-generic and then 'make oldconfig' to try and
eliminate configuration differences as a variable. I followed the
procedure in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild.

[Bug 145857] [gutsy] thinkpad_acpi oops on thinkpad t22

2007-09-27 Thread L Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

This did not occur with Xubuntu 7.10 tribe 4 (booted the cd to verify)
but does occur with the current kernel. No error message displays during
normal (quiet) boot, I only saw this because I was looking at dmesg to
try and trace down a different problem. Unfortunately this means I can't
say when the change first happened.

[Bug 132739] init.d/linux-restricted-modules-common script issues Read only file system error

2007-08-15 Thread Peter L Jones
Public bug reported:

/sbin/lrm-manager is issuing
mkdir: cannot create directory /lib/modules/KVER/restricted/volatile:
read-only filesystem
during the boot process (Preparing restricted drivers gets a fail).

This may be related to bug 131961 in busybox - it started happening at
the same time as the segfaults on boot.

** Affects: busybox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 131871] Re: Segmentation fault and no DMRAID in Gutsy

2007-08-12 Thread Peter L Jones
Bah. I thought I'd checked for udevsettle. Adding the usual
/sbin/udevsettle --timeout=60 to init-top/udev fixes the DMRAID setup.

However, the segfaults remain. Perhaps, instead, related to
 * Preparing restricted drivers
 mkdir: cannot create directory: /lib/modules/2.6.22-9-rt/restricted/volatile.
  Read-only filesystem.

[Bug 106177] Re: make dmraid play nice with udev

2007-08-12 Thread Peter L Jones
Just to say that the udevsettle in scripts/local-top/dmraid doesn't solve the
problem for me. I'll check further but I currently have
 /sbin/udevsettle --timeout=60
as the last line of scripts/init-premount/udev. I'm not sure if it's the
timeout value or the placement of the call that makes a difference (I'll try
with just the dmraid udevsettle with a timeout of 90 then 60).
