The noise has returned for me, as well.

What does one have to do to shut gdm up for good? This is ridiculous.

It's also a violation of the Debian Policy, and unless Ubuntu has
changed that part, of Ubuntu Policy.

[Bug 356781] Re: 8.04-9.04 cups-pdf prevents upgrade (pre-depends error) for some users

2009-10-27 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Martin-Éric, the Debian bug you refer to has this:

Unpacking cups-pdf (from .../cups-pdf_1.6.3-2_i386.deb) ...
chown: `root:lpadmin': invalid group
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/cups-pdf_1.6.3-2_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

Back then, cups-pdf clearly had a preinst script. Back then it is
possible that a Pre-Depends was the right solution (though I doubt it,
since Pre-Depends is so rarely the right solution). Today, there is no
preinst script, so Pre-Depends is not necessary at all.

From the Debian bug, I guess (not being interested in digging up the
five year old package) that the preinst script did a chgrp lpadmin
without ensuring that the group exists. Pre-Depending on cupsys fixed
this, since cupsys's maintainer scripts created the group.

Today, cups-pdf does that chown. The package already depends on cups-
client, which creates the group. Since postinst will only be run after
dependencies have been configured, the cups-pdf postinst can rely on the
lpadmin group existing.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

[Bug 461744] Re: update-manager exits on dist-upgrade when tmp is mounted noexec and gives useless error message

2009-10-27 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I note that this can easily be verified using kvm with /tmp mounted on a
separate partition and marked noexec. (I've just done this.)

rather than a mysterious crash.

2009-10-27 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I don't seem to be able to edit the description, so I'll add the SRU
testing instructions here.

TEST CASE:

1. Set up jaunty in a virtual machine. Put /tmp on its own partition.
2. After installation, change /etc/fstab to use the noexec option for /tmp.
3. Reboot and verify that /tmp is mounted with noexec.
4. Start dist upgrade (update-manager -d).
5. Verify that the dist upgrade starts, but crashes without error message.
6. Install update from Michael.
7. Re-run dist-upgrade. You should now get an error message.

[Bug 442854] Re: Daily cron fails

2009-10-21 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I tried this:

l...@gytha$ sudo /usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
[sudo] password for liw:
error: error accessing /var/log/couchdb/0.10.0: Tiedostoa tai hakemistoa ei ole
error: couchdb:1 glob failed for /var/log/couchdb/0.10.0/*.log
error: found error in /var/log/couchdb/0.10.0/*.log , skipping

Then I change the glob according to my previous message and re-ran:

l...@gytha$ sudo vi /etc/logrotate.d/couchdb
l...@gytha$ sudo /usr/sbin/logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
l...@gytha$

So the glob really would seem to fix the problem.

[Bug 446191] Re: System / Shut Down Suspend does not lock screen

2009-10-21 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I seem to have this bug as well. Suspend started locking the screen when
I enabled the screensaver's locking. This is a change from jaunty, and
pretty surprising. Is it always appropriate to require screensaver to
lock when you want suspend to lock?

l...@havelock$ gconftool -g /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled
false
l...@havelock$ gconftool -g /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled

suspend as well?

[Bug 442854] Re: Daily cron fails

2009-10-20 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I too have this problem. /var/log/couchdb exists,
/var/log/couchdb/0.10.0 does not exist. Should the logrotate glob be
changed to

/var/log/couchdb/*/*.log

?

I don't know what assumptions are at work here, and I don't understand
why there are version-specific directories, so it would be good to have
some input from someone who understands that.

2009-10-13 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Could those having this problem please try to get a valgrind log?

1. Open a terminal.
2. Copy-paste the following commands to the command line (and do whatever you
need to do to get computer-janitor to crash while using it, but don't worry if
it doesn't actually remove packages):

bzr get lp:computer-janitor/trunk
cd trunk
sudo env G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck
--leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log ./test-env
./computer-janitor-gtk
sudo chmod a+r valgrind.log

3. Attach valgrind.log to this bug report.

Very much thank you.

[Bug 446805] Re: update-manager does not report no network connection

2009-10-13 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I cannot reproduce this on my desktop machine. If I disable all interfaces
(ifdown -a), and click Check, update-manager immediately fails and gives an
error. If I instead remove the network cable and click Check, it takes a few
minutes
(DNS timeout), and then update-manager fails non-silently.

I'm not running NetworkManager on that box, though.

Could you open a terminal window and do the following:

dpkg -c var/cache/apt/archives//openoffice.org-

Does that command output any error message?

You said you empty the cache. Did you do it by running apt-get clean? If not,
could you try that, too.
Did you reboot after trying to upgrade?

[Bug 430197] Re: Disable partial upgrades during a development release

2009-10-13 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I concur: in the cases where partial upgrades are currently triggered,
having an option to continue the upgrade but without removing packages
would be a good idea. It is unclear to me what exactly a partial upgrade
does, though.

[Bug 420009] Re: update manager tries to download stale files?

2009-10-13 Thread Lars Wirzenius
This does happen to regular Ubuntu archives as well, during the
development phase. For a released version iti is obviously rare.

However, since doing an apt-get update can be heavy, especially on
slower machines, it's not necessarily a good idea to do it always before
installing upgrades. I'd say that the mechanisms we have in place of
keeping the packge lists up to date daily should take of the security
aspect.

It might help if the dialog saying packages couldn't be downloaded would
warn about package lists being up to date. Or the upgrade action could
the dates of the updates and warn if they're older than a day or two.

[Bug 448729] Re: computer-janitor needs option to remove unused linux kernels/headers

2009-10-12 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I've just verified that computer-janitor, in karmic, does indeed suggest

I also verified that it still suggests packages that apt-get
autoremove (packages marked as automatically installed, but nothing
depending on them anymore).

[Bug 446031] [NEW] statically configured network interface does not come up at boot

2009-10-07 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ifupdown

On my karmic desktop machine, the network interface no longer comes up
at boot time.

The interface is statically configured, as a bridge (the machine runs some
virtual machines).
/etc/network/interface:

--- 8 ---
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

auto br0
iface br0 inet static
address 192.168.1.101
network 192.168.1.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
bridge_ports eth0
bridge_fd 9
bridge_hello 2
bridge_maxage 12
bridge_stp off
--- 8 ---

If I do ifdown -a and ifup -a things do work. After boot, lo and
virbr0 are up, not br0 or eth0.

There is no network manager packages installed, as far as I can see. (It's a
static configuration,
no need for NM.)
