[Bug 1242185] Re: [regression] cups-daemon hard-depends on avahi-daemon

2014-02-28 Thread MMlosh
That's awesome, thanks for figuring out how to make it work cleanly for
everyone.

There is a problem with the testing request, though.
It's highly likely, that subscribers of this thread want to keep avahi far away
from their systems
Therefore they probably won't have the cups+avahi setup required for testing.

[Bug 1272705] [NEW] Dosbox terminated by GPE in libm

2014-01-25 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

x64
13.10 Saucy
Program run: Prague metro C simulator (freeware) based on famous
EN57/Mechanik (freeware)

The console just said Segmentation Fault as usual for a GPE
Will attach: Dmesg messages, valgrind log, gdb stacktrace

Steps how to reproduce:
Get it here: http://mechanik.wz.cz/html/download.php under the download link
start (any?) of the .BAT files (each starts the game with different variation
of the task) in dosbox
select start in the game menu
Wait for a beep in the audio output (means that your train is ready to go)
Hit the End key (Tells the passengers to leave the door area)
Wait for the spoken message to end
Hit the PgDn key (Shuts the right doors)
Wait for the door-shutting sound to finish
Hit any of X,C,V,B,N,M (Engine power control)
(The train starts to move though a junction area right next to the start)
Optional: change the engine power as the train rides.
I got a crash in ~50% of the cases while the train was going though the
junction area

** Affects: dosbox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Then I played 81MSTREDNI almost to the end where I got a crash at the final

It appears to be exactly the same issue as the valgrind trace or dmesg..

Got another crash at the beginning of the first junction block this time
at 81MSILNY. It's the same of course.

Basically.. it seems that the crash points are the spots where the rails
split/merge
(Either it crashes at the very beginning of an junction block or at it's very
end)

@ apport-collect
Is there a way how that can be done WHILE keeping my launchpad login away from

(Hey, I downloaded a kernel over plain HTTP and ran it few hours after you
asked me to. No way I'll give it my login details)

2014-01-13 Thread MMlosh
I, of course, know that HAL has been obsolete for like an eternity now
(and removing it of course removes the messages and halves the boot time)

However, it is still installable in the previous LTS version (and saucy is
actually the only release where it's not available)
Anyone skipping non-LTS releases can run into this and I believe the
incompatibility should be noted somewhere.

I really wonder why I still have hal installed, though.
I believe I would surely remove it if I was ever prompted to
EDIT: It turned out the installed desktop environment was really outdated and
used ivman HAL-based automounter daemon.

[Bug 1071868] Re: X11 segfaults on WM start, ATI 3|D Rage IIC [regression]

2014-01-10 Thread MMlosh
The only activity here is me saying Still an issue in ... for each
release.

And since it's still an issue with Saucy, it means it's still an issue with
kernel 3.11 series.
Can you please rephrase what you want me to test, if anything?

Apport reports cannot be saved locally and uploaded manually anymore? :(
The closest offline alternative appears to be apport-cli -f -p
xserver-xorg-video-ati --save report
Have that report file + an X11 log file. I hope that helps to resolve this.

[Bug 1170117] Re: [gm45] Xv video corruption when obstructed by shaped windows (corner case)

2014-01-10 Thread MMlosh
Bug reproduction by The parallelogram does not work anymore.

I think I rarely I get to see one/handful-of damaged video line when quickly
and randomly shuffling windows around.
I can't rule out the possibility that the video I played was corrupted, though.

I think it's it's OK to say It fixed itself during the upgrade to
13.10

2014-01-10 Thread MMlosh
Wow.. I totally didn't expect this.

It actually IS working again with in the 14.04 Trusty

It seems the reason why it's not crashing anymore is this snippet from the xorg
logfile
MACH64(0): Direct rendering is not supported for ATI chips earlier than the ATI
3D Rage Pro.
MACH64(0): Render acceleration disabled

It can do Xv video at 720x576 (even though that makes running glxgears
drop to from 32 to 5 FPS)

[Bug 1071868] Re: X11 segfaults on WM start, ATI 3|D Rage IIC [regression]

2014-01-10 Thread MMlosh
Hard to say.

I would be fine running Trusty there already...
But I discovered an issue with ACPI - ACPI tables won't parse (actually, the
last release that works is 13.03 raring)
- ACPI is not working - no ATX power-off , no display power management (DPMS)
- major usability setback

I guess it depends on the complexity of the backport compared to the
complexity of figuring out the ACPI issue, then?

[Bug 1170117] Re: [gm45] Xv video corruption when obstructed by shaped windows (corner case)

2013-11-10 Thread MMlosh
I found another nice way how to reproduce (this or a similar issue) with a
shaped window.
program display appears to be creating shaped windows based on the opaque
areas of the image.
fluxbox is (regardless of the chosen style) still drawing a frame around the
hollow window.

display the attached image with display from stock 13.10's imagemagick
(8:6.7.7.10-5ubuntu2.1)
Obstruct mplayer's Xv window wit that thing.

So far there was at least one corrupted video line in each frame.

Did that help with reproduction?

[Bug 1155926] Re: GeForce FX 5700 - Digital DVI output turned off on boot, X11 does not see the output at all.

2013-11-08 Thread MMlosh
Well..

This is what happens with 13.10's 3.11.0-13 kernel. (reboot after I installed
it)
The screen goes dark (probably not off) for a couple of seconds after hitting
enter in grub.
Then it goes back on, writing startup messages (first one is, strangely,
starting SystemD login service)

I did a full power cycle..
the screen got dark for 12 seconds (I measured it this time)
and the first message displayed was what I expected (fsk message saying disk is
OK)

(+ a different issue emerged: In both cases the SLiM login manager was
started (incorrectly) on VT1. )

It's not perfect, but I guess it allows you to mark this issue fixed :)

[Bug 1161073] Re: seq puts the separator on wrong spot!

2013-07-05 Thread MMlosh
I noticed another separator issue with seq (also coreutils, same
version)

I tried to sort a .csv file containing the following lines by the 2nd column
38,41,10,7
70,37,23,10

using
sort -nr -t, -k2

That happily worked in Quantal, but does only something weird in Raring.

I expect the entire coreutils package to be separator-defective. No
wonder it's stuck in debian Sid and didn't go in Jessie...

[Bug 1162784] Re: [i915] SIGBUS X11 crash from libglx

[Bug 1175944] Re: getstream quits with SIGABRT when ANY of the tuners loses signal

2013-05-30 Thread MMlosh
There was a complete signal outage yesterday + a power outage recently. I
don't know which messages should be atributed to which cause.
Getstream is definitely not immune to complete signal outage, not even with my

signal to come back)

[Bug 1175944] Re: getstream quits with SIGABRT when ANY of the tuners loses signal

2013-05-19 Thread MMlosh
UPDATE: Progress!

The stall was traced to a the while loop in dvr_input_ts ( dvr.c:68 )
When psi_reassemble does not increase off, it gets called again with the same
arguments - inf-loop

I believe that that can happen only when section-len == 0.
I have no idea where is that coming from nor why.
Getstream itself? Kernel? USB DVBT tuner's firmware? Tuner's hardware? Actual
content of the signal?

The .patch attached does _NOT_ fix the cause of the aborts.
It only makes sure that psi_reassemble either makes progress or returns errors
and prevents the inf-loop.
I am not even sure that PSI_RC_LENFAIL is the correct return code for the
situation. PSI_RC_NOPAYLOAD? PSI_RC_CORRUPT?

I also attach a pack with on-abor/lockup stacktraces I collected.

I'll let it run for a week and see, whether it actually worked.
So far the attached not-fix successfully replaced all abort lines with
warning lines in the logs, making getstream useful again.

I don't think that the patch is ready for upstream, but at least it allows me
to use getstream
I hope it helps someone more involved than me to actually fix the issue.

[Bug 1181369] [NEW] display: Cropping box does not draw properly with other windows over it

2013-05-17 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Raring 64bit, up to date.
Imagemagick 8:6.7.7.10-5ubuntu2

I haven't seen any python/apport updates, so I assume it's still broken
(bug 1150335)

Steps to reproduce:
Open a picture with display
Place another window over the canvas (even IM's own menu would do)
- You might need to change the focus/raise model of your window manager to
achieve that for other windows
Select Transform-Crop from IM's menu
Try to select an area around the obstructing window.

Observed: see the attachment

Expected: Whole rectangle being painted.

I don't think it's GPU-specific, it does happen with DRI disabled, but to be
sure, my GPU is GM45, managed by i915.

[Bug 1175944] Re: getstream quits with SIGABRT when ANY of the tuners loses signal

2013-05-17 Thread MMlosh
correction:
If the multiplex from the *affected (signal loss)* tuner was streamed
somewhere.

Well, the watchdog is really necessary.
The event loop gets stuck eventually when one of the tuners has poor signal
(and perhaps when I attempt to watch it?).
So far it seems that increasing the watchdog timeout from 1s to 2s reduces the
abort rate dramatically.
That is, of course, no actual solution and could prevent debugging attempts.

[Bug 1175944] Re: getstream quits with SIGABRT when ANY of the tuners loses signal

2013-05-16 Thread MMlosh
I disabled the watchdog.
Temporary signal outage on one tuner does not affect other tuners for at least
30s.

If the multiplex from the tuner was streamed somewhere, a warning
appears on the console, saying demux: read in dvr_read returned with
errno 75

I wonder whether the libevent loop gets actually stuck, or just delayed.

[Bug 1175944] Re: getstream quits with SIGABRT when ANY of the tuners loses signal

2013-05-13 Thread MMlosh
According to the source code the SIGABRT watchdog thread should only be active
when compiled with DEBUG
That also produces a notice on every http stream start and end (also matches my
observations)

I'll try building it without debug to see whether it's really locking
up, or only the watchdog misbehaving.

Just as I expected. Adding new tuner to capture a weaker dvb-t multiplex
causes a sigabrt every now and then, usually at least once per hour,
causing disruptions to all multiplexes.

[Bug 1175944] [NEW] getstream quits with SIGABRT when ANY of the tuners loses signal

2013-05-03 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

I am running getstream on 4 usb tuners (one instance for all)

When any of the tuners loses signal, getstream aborts with SIGABRT.
That, obviously, interrupts all streams, even those streamed from good tuners.

I found an important information in the changelog:

I added a guardian thread which basically monitors if the libevent loop in the
main program is still triggering events. If not we'll send a SIGABRT and when
you are lucky and have set a core ulimit we'll have something to debug
afterwards.

This has been happening across quite a few gestream and ubuntu versions
The current version originates from Quantal, (20081204-1ubuntu4)

Note: I am running it on ARM, not x86

[Bug 1170117] Re: [gm45] Xv video corruption when obstructed by shaped windows (corner case)

2013-04-22 Thread MMlosh
It was a bit harder to figure out the position of the topright fbrun
this time..

So far it seems to always work when the topright fbrun obstructs one of
the red blinking lights.

I was unable to reproduce easily with vlc, likely because of it's bottom status
bar preventing easy placement of the bottom-down fbrun

But I wasn't even able to reproduce with original mplayer!
I forgot to mention that I was using mplayer2

[Bug 1170117] Re: [gm45] Xv video corruption when obstructed by shaped windows (corner case)

2013-04-17 Thread MMlosh
 a copy of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/1162046/comments/10

The fix arrived with the updates today.
Most of the corruption is gone. Almost all the frames now get though undamaged.
Thanks for the fix.

BUT

Some of the video frames still get damaged when drawn.
However, it does depend on the video content (and possibly on (absolute) window
positions)

I attach a short captured dvb-t video to be played with mplayer2 using Xv output
and a picture with the example fbrun dialogue positions.

Steps:
Fluxbox with a round-cornered theme.
mplayer2 with the testcase.ts file, pause it as soon as it starts
fbrun #1, so it's bottom-left corner perfectly matches with the mplayer2's
bottom-left corner
fbrun #2 somewhere in the video area, preferably far from the fbrun #1
unpause mplayer.

I observed damage between fbrun #2 and the right edge of the Xv video.

Notes:
fbrun's windows don't seem to be resizeable, mplayer opens a window 1:1 to the
input (so, exactly defined again)

It seems to depend a bit on the position of the Xv window on the screen.
It does rarely work when the Xv is close to screen edges
= preferably position the Xv window somewhat in the middle of the screen.

PS:
Alternatively you can start mplayer with -fixed-vo -loop 0 as arguments for
mplayer instead of pausing/unpausing
That will give you a continuous loop in the same Xv window.

[Bug 1162820] Re: [eCryptfs on ext4] Delete files and Remove leaks HDD space

2013-04-05 Thread MMlosh
The HDD space leak makes it hard to debug..

I tried with a more precise approach this time and installed no updates between
downloading and removal.
The file I removed had 30MB, Free space before removal: 47M, Free space after
removal: 47M

Is there anything in particular that I should try?
I don't like wasting my precious HDD space on random attempts.
removing transmission-downloaded files with rm restores the free space as one
would expect.

System info:
Using 13.04.
Kernel 3.8.0-14-generic x86_64
Transmission 2.77-0ubuntu1
ecryptfs-utils 103-0ubuntu2
ext4 mount options: rw,nodiratime,relatime,discard,errors=remount-ro
apport 2.9.2-0ubuntu5, does not work

Steps I executed (full experiment log)

$path denotes the directory that contains the file to be deleted
$cryptopath denotes the same directory in encrypted version of the home
directory.

The file was present both in $path and $cryptopath (checked by ls -lSrh and
comparing timestamps and sizes)
df -h reported 47M of free space
Started transmission-gtk and selected Delete files and Remove, confirmed
The file was gone from both directories,
BUT df -h still reported 47M of free space
Terminated transmission.. 47M of free space
shutdown and new startup.. 47M of free space
forced fsck..discovered that the free space and free inode counters were
wrong, I actually have only 46MB of free space.

(This might not be a kernel bug)

The issue lies somewhere in the chain transmission-ecryptfs-

[Bug 1162820] Re: [eCryptfs on ext4] Delete files and Remove leaks HDD space

2013-04-05 Thread MMlosh
OOPS.. I just found out what is happening.

Transmission established a folder called ~/.local/share/trash and
moved the file there instead of deletion!

This is a serious issue. How was I supposed to know that one application
decided that I want to keep my garbage?
The button should be renamed from Delete to something else to indicate that.

Or there should be an explanation like (the file will be moved into trash)
in the confirmation dialog.
Why was I even confirming an operation that can be undone??

[Bug 1162784] [NEW] [i915] SIGBUS X11 crash from libglx

2013-04-01 Thread MMlosh

Unfortunately that provides no information at all

I tried with LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=y and the X11 crashed.

When the X11 crashes this way, I immediately restart it and start the

[Bug 1162046] Re: [gm45] Xv video falls apart and flickers when obstructed by 2 windows

2013-04-01 Thread MMlosh
Did that help?

PS: pekwm's default theme also has round corners.

PS2: The video can be even in a paused state.
(in VLC that doesn't even stop the flickering, while in mplayer2 it does.
But the way how the frame is damaged changes with the position of the
obstructing windows)

For very small dialogs of fluxbox's fbrun it doesn't seem to matter where are
they positioned, as long as they are completely inside the Xv window and don't
overlap each other.
This might be related to the fact that fluxbox automatically puts it in the
topmost above dock layer.

xterm's windows seem to be a bit more picky

[Bug 1162046] [NEW] [i915] Xv video falls apart and flickers when obstructed by 2 windows

2013-03-29 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

Xv video does not paint properly when partially obstructed by multiple windows
in certain places.
(see the attachment)
Note that one of the obstructing windows depicts my attempt to use apport-bug.

I tried with mplayer2 and vlc as Xv video players.

I tried with Pekwm and Fluxbox as window managers.

I tried with Pekwm, positioned the windows, stopped pekwm (running WM-free X11)
  the flickering stopped.

[Bug 1155926] [NEW] GeForce FX 5700 - Digital DVI output turned off on boot, X11 does not see the output at all.

2013-03-16 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Raring and lost my digital video output.

The computer has 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV36.2
[GeForce FX 5700] (rev a1) video card.
The card has two connectors (VGA and DVI-I) and provides THREE video outputs
(2x analogue, 1x digital)

The card's bios correctly detects which outputs are connected and uses them.
I can see BIOS and GRUB on digital.
But then the kernel boots and turns the DVI-I:Digital output off (and turns on
DVI-I:Analogue)

I am planning to reinstall that machine, so I don't mind running unverified
kernels on them.
Mainline kernel will be tested next.

[Bug 1155926] Re: GeForce FX 5700 - Digital DVI output turned off on boot, X11 does not see the output at all.

2013-03-16 Thread MMlosh
I tried a mainline kernel: mainline/v3.9-rc2-raring
It works.

[Bug 1155926] Re: GeForce FX 5700 - Digital DVI output turned off on boot, X11 does not see the output at all.

2013-03-16 Thread MMlosh
I ran that kernel and did
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade.
it did what was there to do

..and left me in a root shell !
Or maybe both user and root shell fighting over the VT1 input.
Hitting Ctrl+D (crashed? and) rebooted the computer.
That is really weird and I further undermines my trust into kernel downloaded
over plain HTTP. (no HTTPS, no signature)

PS: kernel 3.8.0-12 does not fix the issue

[Bug 1067019] Re: Cannot switch VT [regression]

2013-03-10 Thread MMlosh
I am unable to test with the mainline kernel.

The mainline kernel package is not signed
and kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc1-raring/ doesn't seem to
support HTTPS.

[Bug 1071868] Re: X11 segfaults on WM start, ATI 3|D Rage IIC [regression]

2013-03-08 Thread MMlosh
I started X11 with xinit -- :1 -nolisten tcp and executed sudo -b synaptic
three times.
Additionally to my password not being accepted the X11 also crashed because of
a segfault.
The log was the same.

Therefore is is not tied to any window manager, even xterm crashes it
under some conditions.

I think I can do that.
How do I verify the package's integrity?
The KernelMainlineBuilds page does not tell and the download page doesn't even
seem to support https.

[Bug 1152491] [NEW] XML Parsing Error: unexpected parser state

2013-03-08 Thread MMlosh
Public bug reported:

I visited:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc1-raring/

Waited until the page loaded.
Then I added s to http
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc1-raring/

waited for the timeout
and got this instead of the usual timeout message
XML Parsing Error: unexpected parser state
Location:
jar:file:///usr/lib/firefox/omni.ja!/chrome/toolkit/content/global/netError.xhtml
Line Number 311, Column 58:div
id=ed_netInterruptnetInterrupt.longDesc;/div
-^

(the ^ pointed at th last semicolon on the last line)

Unfortunately I wasn't even able to reproduce.
I remember seeing such errors in the past, though.

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

UPDATE:
I got my hands on another machine that was updated to Raring..

Clicking ANY of the items that have vanished from the repo causes the crash.
Attempt to select them via keyboard also produces the same crash.
These items (by their nature) are only found in the Status-Not Installed
(residual config)

Clicking the rest (those have a nonblank latest version and
description) is fine.
