[Bug 1667898] Re: Failed to start Zeitgeist activity log service on Ubuntu 17.04

2019-04-12 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1666495 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1666495

Instead of copying a .local/share/zeitgeist directory from somewhere,
you can just run "zeitgeist-datahub" from the command line. That
created the .sqlite files for me, at least.

[Bug 1174654] Re: qemu-system-x86_64 takes 100% CPU after host machine resumed from suspend to ram

2018-12-08 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
I was seeing this problem when my Debian laptop suspended. The CentOS
guest would begin consuming a lot of cpu and only a hard-reset would fix
it.

Changing the rtc line to

seems to have fixed it, though I haven't done extensive testing yet.

Thanks!

[Bug 1388847] Re: wxPython Error: running HTML2

2014-12-12 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Just ran into a similar problem. I still have problems, but at least
wxPython is working now.

Your LD_PRELOAD is wrong. You can tell by the message '/usr/lib/x86_64
-linux-gnu/libwx_gtk2u_webview-3.0.so.0.2.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be
preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

I found my lib and used that path in LD_PRELOAD and it worked.

To find your lib: find /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ -name *webview*

[Bug 1275794]

2014-02-25 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Additional datapoint since I just ran into this bug but haven't yet
managed to upgrade the firmware.

I am running Debian Testing right now on a new x240 with the ultradock.
I was testing this and, just as gdm was about to start up, I docked the
system.

Kernel is now saying task kworker/1:3:1450 blocked for more than 120
seconds and task Xorg:1647 blocked for more than 120 seconds followed
by Not tainted 3.12-1-amd64 #1

I'll apply the firmware updates, but it I thought this might help
someone who was searching for an answer.

[Bug 1072693] Re: Empathy does not connect accounts, Facebook, Google, Outlook

[Bug 224477] Re: /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d calls /sbin/runlevel without DEPENDSing sysvinit or upstart-compat-sysv

2012-11-30 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
invoke-rc.d is in sysv-rc and sysv-rc DEPENDs on sysvinit-utils which
RECOMMENDs upstart, the location of /sbin/runlevel.

This bug wouldn't affect many people except those who are pedantic
enough to try to run a minimal system by manually rejecting the
installation of any RECOMMENDed packages.

Still, even those pedants (like me) shouldn't have to deal with this.

[Bug 1072693] Re: Empathy does not connect accounts, Facebook, Google, Outlook

I can confirm this is still happening.

I also created a test account to see which files on disk were created
for setting up an account. It worked there, but removing the files on
my home account (hoping that this would solve the problem) did not fix
it. But it is possible I missed something.

[Bug 1066048] Re: corrupt monitors.xml makes gnome unusable

2012-10-15 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Ok, I've managed to reproduce this problem and have a monitors.xml that
reliably produces it for me.

The 1366x768 configuration for my laptop does not seem to work when I
have a 1920x1200 monitor attached. When the 1920 monitor is attached,
the laptop works when it is set to 1360x768. I'm not sure what the
difference is other than those 6 rows of pixels.

I have it hooked up to a 1280x1024 external monitor right now and the
1366 resolution doesn't seem to cause a problem. Memory issues?

[Bug 1066048] Re: corrupt monitors.xml makes gnome unusable

2012-10-15 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Attaching a configuration I just tested. It works until I log in and
then fails. After I hit super-p or some other key combo to get switch
monitor configs, it becomes somewhat usable. In this case, I've edited
monitors.xml so that the primary monitor in the config to be the
external monitor.

Note that although the LCD shows as active here, nothing is displayed on
it.

[Bug 1066048] [NEW] corrupt monitors.xml makes gnome unusable

2012-10-12 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

I was trying to switch the primary monitor for Ubuntu and after some
back-n-forth, both monitors went blank.

Switched to a text console, restarted gdm and after logging in the
monitors both went blank.

Upgraded everything and got the same problem.

Finally managed to get firefox up with a minimal .xinitrc and found
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution which told me to look at
~/.config/monitors.xml. I edited the file in emacs (from which I have
the original, buggy monitors.xml~ file) and managed to get a working
session.

Looking at the diffs, I'm not sure *why* the buggy setup blanked both
monitors and I haven't logged in again with what I think is the bad
monitors.xml to confirm it.

I'll submit this bug and my monitors.xml + diff and then try to verify
that the monitors.xml that I think causes the problems actually does.
BBIAS ;)

[Bug 982316] Re: Deja Dup is unable to detect network connection

2012-08-01 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
I guess the easiest way to fix this would be to special-case SSH URIs and
 just use the
ssh command to try to make a connection, and use that for the can_reach
 method - this
will also take care of ProxyCommand and friends, and should be more to the
 point.

Since there are also errors being reported here against smb, no special
casing is necessary. Just attempt to make a connection using the
specified GIO method.

dropbear doesn't start when it is first installed if it sees that
openssh-server is installed, avoiding this problem, but it doesn't check
on upgrades.

Checks should be done during an upgrade to make sure if the environment
has changed (those crazy users!), the upgrade still works.

[Bug 998246] [NEW] pulseadio and snd driver top power usage

2012-05-11 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

I just installed powertop 2.0
(https://01.org/powertop/blogs/ceferron/2012/powertop-v2.0-release) and
saw that pulseaudio and my sound driver were always consuming power even
when no sound was playing. After muting the sound it did appear to die
down, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Anyway, lots of power being used by sound when no sound is being played.
That isn't good for my battery.

[Bug 921897] [NEW] root attributes aren't properly rendered

2012-01-25 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

Reporting this against Lucid since it should still be supported and
we're having a problem with it on the render farm for Wikimedia Commons.

See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sulfamerazin.svg -- the
thumbnails from 5 June 2010 show the how the SVG files as they render
with after the upgrade to librsvg which resulted in User:Rillke coming
back a year and a half later (shortly after the upgrade to Lucid) and
updating the svg file to remove the dependency on the stroke attribute
in the root element.

I tested this file against 2.35.1-0ubuntu1 backported to Lucid and found
that the the newer version of rsvg worked properly.

[Bug 888859] [NEW] Bolding unicode fonts works only sporadically

2011-11-10 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

While chasing down a bug today (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/32343) I
discovered that Ubuntu's font support doesn't seem to work as well as
Fedora 16's.

Attached you'll see a screenshot of Ubuntu's Chromium vs Ubuntu's
Firefox. The bolded letters in the Tamil language font are not
displayed correctly. I downloaded Google's .deb of Chrome to compare
and it had the same problem. (You'll see from the linked bug that Brion
diagnosed this problem first.)

Since Fedora 16 came out recently, I decided to give it a try. The
Google-provided RPMs for Chrome were able to display the bolded fonts
properly there.

Ubuntu should probably do whatever Fedora is doing to bold those fonts.

[Bug 800718] Re: can't install add-ons

2011-06-23 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
So far, no addon I've tried to add has worked, but the two I've tried
repeatedly are firebug and adblock. For fun, I just tried noscript,
flashblock, abine, and weatherfox. None worked, but the behavior was
always the same.

The progress bar shows it downloading and then switches to Installing
but the bar then remains grey. Switching from the Get Addons to
Extensions ribbon, each extension shows with the grey Installing
bar.

After restarting firefox, the previously downloaded extensions are not
shown.

Packaged firebug and adblock work --- I can see them among the listed
extensions, but since they aren't compatible with FF5, they are greyed
out.

[Bug 800718] [NEW] can't install add-ons

2011-06-22 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

Going through the regular FF process of installing add-ons used to work.
Before FF4, I was able to install add ons using .xpi packages through
FF's UI.

Since FF4 and, now, in FF5, I can't install addons through the UI. It
allows me to select an add on, asks me to confirm that I want to install
it and, after confirmation, the extension progress bar just sits there
with Installing but nothing happens.

2011-05-23 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
I don't know what is needed, but this just bit me in the butt. Luckily
the file was there so I could see *when* the permissions changed, but it
would be better if this actually took care of rolling them back, as
well.

[Bug 774273] Re: unlock screen no longer works

2011-05-23 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
The permission was incorrect. It should have been in the group shadow
to make unix_chkpwd work. Group permissions were changed after
installing isc-dhcp-server. I'm filing a bug against that package.

[Bug 786998] [NEW] /etc/shadow permissions changed after installation

2011-05-23 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

Tracking down the problem that led to me filing bug #774273 brought me
to the isc-dhcp-server package which was installed as a dhcp3-server
dependency. After installing the package, gnome-screensaver didn't
work. I found that this is because pam_unix uses unix_chkpwd when it
doesn't have permissions to read /etc/shadow. unix_chkpwd is setgid
shadow and the /etc/shadow file is supposed to be read-only for the
shadow group.

At some point after the installation (but before the installation of any
other package, according to etckeeper) the group was changed to root
on /etc/shadow, breaking gnome-screensaver.

[Bug 768552] Re: After upgrade system was busted.

2011-04-30 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Discovered that a lot of this bug was caused by the un-packaged files in
/etc created by a udhcp installation that I did for my local virtual
machines just before the upgrade. Removing those files (and a few
others from the regular dhcp package) fixed the problem.

2011-04-30 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

This looks kind of like bug #192666. After upgrading to the beta of

[Bug 768552] [NEW] After upgrade system was busted.

2011-04-21 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I don't know if xorg was the problem. In fact, I doubt it was, but I
don't know where to report it.

Attached you'll find the diff's of my /etc directory. After upgrade I
saw the following problems:

- keyboard didn't work in X, so I couldn't log in.

Had to force power off. On reboot:

- /home wasn't mounted, so I was selected Manual to try and resolve
it.

Was dropped to root shell. mount /home worked, so I'm not sure why
mountall in the startup scripts didn't work.

- keyboard still didn't work, so I rebooted into single user mode
- (Same deal with /home mount)
- turned on dbus and network-manager manually

tried to use nwcli to get wireless working but couldn't. It saw the
ESSIDs, but, probably b/c of my ignorance, I couldn't connect. Found a
wired connection, and it worked.

Ran aptitude dist-upgrade in case the problem was one that had been
solved and fixed.

Reboot didn't do anything different.

Used bzr+etckeeper to roll back to yesterday's configuration, but left
all packages in their current state. Rebooting worked.

I'm not sure what the problem was, but maybe it is in the attached diff.

[Bug 424655] Re: Pulse audio memory leak

2009-11-27 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
I suspect udev is not the only source of the leak. I removed
pulseaudio-module-udev (because valgrind wouldn't run with it), but I
was still seeing leaks. The leaking was dramatically slower, but still
there. Valgrind and pulseaudio output attached.

will blank and lock, but then nothing else happens.

[Bug 454380] [NEW] conflict between gnome-shell + metacity causes high CPU usage

2009-10-17 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-shell

I was tracking down a high CPU problem and found gconfd-2 was writing
lots of entries about /apps/metacity and /apps/mutter. The only place I
knew mutter was used was gnome-shell. Sure enough, killing off gnome-
shell fixed the problem.

My .xsession-errors file is filled with these messages:

[Bug 449729] Re: rebuild with new debhelper to get trigger support

2009-10-15 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
The problem is that you are including calls to install-info in the
postinst/prerm scripts. Examine the source of /usr/bin/install-info and
read deb-triggers manpage.

[Bug 436246] [NEW] nm-applet depends on wrong version of libnm-glib

2009-09-24 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
Public bug reported:

in karmic

nm-applet seems to be built against libnm-glib-vpn.so.0 but the version
of libnm-glib2 now shipping contains libnm-glib-vpn.1

To fix, I symlinked my ~/libnm-glib-vpn.so.0 to /usr/lib/libnm-glib-
vpn.so.1 and added ~ to LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Following is proof of the
problem:

$ ldd /usr/bin/nm-applet | grep vpn

Description: network management framework (GNOME frontend)
NetworkManager attempts to keep an active network connection available at all
times. It is intended only for the desktop use-case, and is not intended for
usage on servers. The
point of NetworkManager is to make networking configuration and setup as
painless and automatic as possible. If using DHCP, NetworkManager is
_intended_ to replace default
routes, obtain IP addresses from a DHCP server, and change nameservers
whenever it sees fit.

This package contains a systray applet for GNOME's notification area but it
also works for other desktop environments which provide a systray like KDE or
XFCE. It displays the
available networks and allows to easily switch between them. For encrypted
networks it will prompt the user for the key/passphrase and it can optionally
store them in the
 gnome-keyring.

[Bug 413252] Re: package courier-base 0.61.2-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-08-17 Thread Mark A. Hershberger
key bit:

update-alternatives: error: alternative link
/usr/share/man/man5/maildir.5.gz is already managed by maildir.5.gz.

dpkg: error processing courier-base (--configure):

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit
status 2

So... the manpage link should be fixed or a conflict added or ... ?
