Tested with Dell XPS 9560 and Ubuntu 18.04.

After installing the proposed packages and rebooting, everything booted
correctly, although the nvidia driver was still loaded (I had my system
set to use intel) and power use was quite high (~23W).

*But* after following the test case steps and switching to nvidia,
reboot and then back to intel (after logout+login), everything seems
good - the nvidia module isn't loaded, powertop reports ~12W and as a
bonus reboot/shutdown is much faster (used to stall waiting for
something GPUish).

Definitely much better than the LTS experience so far.

Thanks @tombuntus, works on my xps 9560 as well, even though I had to
run `echo "OFF">/proc/acpi/bbswitch` after reboot. Also fixes problems
with suspend.

So from looking at the log:

23.19s - Unity queries applications masterscope
26.37s - apps scope appears on bus
43.49s - BAMF query for running apps
43.58s - Search invoked on apps scope
48.20s - Search inside apps masterscope timed out, sent no-results reply
52.30s - Search in apps scope finishes

So on your machine it took the apps scope ~20 seconds to initialize and
start processing requests, and then another ~9 seconds to process the
first request, which is pretty bad, cause the dbus timeout is 25seconds.
Although from the log it's also visible that the apps scope did respond
to further searches, I assume the case where it doesn't work at all is
when the initial initialization itself takes more than 25 seconds.

All in all, I'd attribute bad IO performance to this issue, but clearly
the apps scope should handle that better.

@Mateusz: Your dbus log is pretty much the same as Pawel's, it says that
activation of the application scope timed out, but doesn't provide any
indication why.

The bustle log captured only the first 30 seconds of the startup process
(as the upstart script tells it to), and in that time scopes didn't even
begin starting up.

You could try bumping the timeout to 90 seconds, and that might provide
more data, but I'm afraid it still won't point to why is the apps scope
startup taking that long.

The unity-scope-tool is a development tool, and should be run by the SDK
itself when developing a scope. SDK will know how to launch it so it
works correctly. I think the conclusion here is that we shouldn't be

Unfortunately the bustle log just shows that the home scope doesn't
query the applications scope, but it's not known why. It would be useful
if bustle was run earlier, so the initial query (and reason it
presumably? failed) to the applications scope would be visible.

The first issue switch_scopes_small_jank.mp4, is expected - after
boot, scopes contents are no longer preloaded, so the first time you
reveal a scope, a query is sent to it (which might block for a few
frames, fix being worked on), and when results are returned, all the QML
objects are created (which will get faster with the linked
card_optimizations branch).

The source of the lag when swiping away the greeter as seen in
unlock_screen.mp4, is not known, and not everyone is able to
reproduce, it also seems to disappear for some people after phone
reboot. More investigation is needed there.

Oh, and part of the unlock_screen.mp4 is the current blocker Qt event
loop stopping when the device is suspend, after the screen unlock unity
needs to process 55minutes worth of events (as seen from the time in the
video).

Just a note, even if we did diffs of the resultsets, if it would take
more than ~250ms to get *all* the results, we'd have the same behaviour.
(and that's pretty likely considering the need to do an internet query)

When I click the install action in the preview of an uninstalled
application, I get the progress bar and when it reaches 100% there's an
error saying that the download/install couldn't be finished.
