[Bug 1782008] Re: Unable to force delete a volume

2019-12-05 Thread Peter Matulis
I see this in /etc/cinder/policy.json:

{
"volume_extension:volume_admin_actions:force_delete": "rule:admin_or_owner"
}

Is that what fixed this? Wouldn't this constitute an override of the
default? Don't we want to actually fix the default?

[Bug 1532537] Re: Impossible to choose language on help.ubuntu.com

2017-09-25 Thread Peter Matulis
@JI

That's true. I agree it goes counter to modern standards. Maybe
"standards" is an exaggeration but at least modern "expectations".

I think the current design is due to how translations work. In principle, these
docs can be presented in any human language. Having a selector for dozens of
languages would also be odd. If we only consider languages that have received
significant translations (say 75% translated) then it should feasible, but such
a solution would require monitoring and manual adjustments. See
https://translations.launchpad.net/serverguide and sort by Status (green is
translated).

Another solution would be to always show it in English and have a button
for "show in your browser's default language".

The simplest would be to ditch translations and just have it in English.

[Bug 1625211] Re: [Xenial] Server ISO - MAAS install options are wrong

2017-03-17 Thread Peter Matulis
** Description changed:

  The Ubuntu Server ISO (tested: amd64 16.04.1) main menu contains the
  following options:

  - Install MAAS Region Controller
  - Install MAAS Rack Controller

  This implies that one does not include the other. However, by choosing
  "Region", "Rack" is also installed. This makes no sense to the average
  user. Not only that, but the "Region" option also installs DHCP, DNS,
  and a proxy. In other words, it installs a complete MAAS environment.

  Suggested rewording:

  - Install complete MAAS environment
  - Install MAAS rack controller
-
- Note that by the time this can be fixed (Feb 2017), the MAAS project
- will have undergone a change in terminology:
-

- - Install MAAS relay

[Bug 1532537] Re: Impossible to choose language on help.ubuntu.com

2016-01-10 Thread Peter Matulis
Hi Alexander. It's the first time I hear such a complaint but I do see
your point. I know it's not ideal but you will need to switch your
browser's preferred language. I use Chrome and a quick search led me
here (it works for me):

2015-12-14 Thread Peter Matulis

[Bug 1492632] Re: [Ubuntu 15.10] Intel Display i915 driver crashes, Asus Zenbook 303LA

2015-10-02 Thread Peter Matulis
The kernel provided in comment #35 also choked with multiple
stacktraces. I have been running 4.3-rc3 since Sept 29 with good
results. I have only seen a stacktrace when closing the lid on my
laptop, which I suppose puts it into some kind of hibernation.

[Bug 1492632] Re: [Ubuntu 15.10] Intel Display i915 driver crashes, Asus Zenbook 303LA

2015-09-29 Thread Peter Matulis
The last kernel brought me back to my corrupted display.

I had to re-install for other reasons and I started back with the first
kernel I tried that didn't give me any grief: 4.3-rc1

However, for some reason my display started to freeze up. My mouse
pointer would move, I could manage it over SSH, and my apps would be
functioning but I could not interact with the desktop. The log I found
is pasted below.

I have since gone back to Joe's last kernel of Sept 22 ( comment #35 )
and so far so good.

Note:

I don't know if this is important but I noticed that most, if not all,

2015-09-16 Thread Peter Matulis
Kernel 4.3-rc1

i) does not produce the stacktraces (good)
ii) does not produce the corrupted display (good)
iii) does not produce the messages I mentioned in comment #13 (good)

It does, however, produce this single line (in the kernel log):

[drm:gen8_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* The master control interrupt lied
(SDE)!

which looks like bug 1488719 .

[Bug 1492632] Re: [Ubuntu 15.10] Intel Display i915 driver crashes, Asus Zenbook 303LA

2015-09-16 Thread Peter Matulis
I tried a less older upstream kernel (v4.1-unstable) and the errant log
messages do not appear:

$ uname -r
4.1.0-040100-generic

However, I get the display problem I originally complained about (see
attached 'MVI_3208.MOV').

As well as these kernel messages:

[ 1148.910440] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU
pipe A FIFO underrun
[ 9104.077066] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU
pipe A FIFO underrun
[ 9191.514885] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU
pipe A FIFO underrun

I'm not sure if this happened with the earlier non-messages kernel.

[Bug 1492632] Re: [Ubuntu 15.10] Intel Display i915 driver crashes, Asus Zenbook 303LA

2015-09-15 Thread Peter Matulis
What happened:

Stacktraces appearing in the kernel log pertaining to the display
driver. I don't know if they were there since the installation of Wily
or whether they started to appear after a package upgrade.

I actually re-installed (stacktraces still present) because I
encountered trouble after the BIOS upgrade. The SSD drive was not
recognized anymore. In retrospect, I think I could have repaired this by
enabling "LCM" as this is what I needed to do after the re-installation.

[Bug 1492632] [NEW] [Ubuntu 15.10] Asus Zenbook 303LA display broken

2015-09-05 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

My Asus Zenbook 303LA (UX303LA-DS51T) eventually gets a corrupted
display. Everything repeatedly shifts horizontally. I found the
following in the kernel log. The corruption does not have a 1:1 relation
with the occurrence of the error however.

[Bug 1372609] Re: Touchpad detected as mouse on Asus ux303ln laptop

2015-05-05 Thread Peter Matulis
Well I have this

[0.958762] input: PS/2 FocalTech FocalTech Touchpad as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio4/input/input12

but my touchpad does work already. At least I can move the mouse around
and click things with it. Is there some special functionality I should
be verifying?

[Bug 1423978] [NEW] [RFE] Enable an upload feature

2015-02-20 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Getting the output file to its final destination is a big part of the
usefulness of this utility. It would be very convenient to have a
switch (-u for upload?) that would trigger a dialog to collect
information necessary for uploading the file. Default values for dialog
questions would be important (and on a per-distro, or some other, basis)
as the usefulness of this feature would be significantly lessened if the
user had to fill in a bunch of fields. This could take the form of sub-
switches where one, in particular, could be targeted at support
organizations, for example Canonical Support (cs), for the Ubuntu
distro.

$ sudo sosreport -a -u cs

An important element would be authentication as we would not want files
ending up in the wrong place. One possibility may be for the support
organization to have its receiving (sftp?) server change a global
password on a regular (monthly?) basis and email it back to the org.

[Bug 1395098] [NEW] [Utopic] OpenLDAP version is outdated

2014-11-21 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Debian unstable has openldap at version 2.4.40 but the version in the
latest stable Ubuntu release (14.10) is 2.4.31 (released upstream in
April 2012). A lot of bugs have been fixed since then [1].

Please put version 2.4.40 into the next release of Ubuntu (15.04).

[Bug 1390151] [NEW] Distro check for Red Hat is not optimal

2014-11-06 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Some third-party software requires the existence of file /etc/redhat-
release in order to install on Ubuntu and creates it in the pre-install
stage. However, this file is also used by sosreport to identify a Red
Hat system [1]. This causes sosreport to fail as it tries to collect
Red Hat-specific information from a Ubuntu system. Is there a better
way to identify a Red Hat system?

[1]:
===
@classmethod
def check(self):
This method checks to see if we are running on RHEL. It returns True
or False.
return (os.path.isfile('/etc/redhat-release')
and not os.path.isfile('/etc/fedora-release'))

[Bug 1348227] Re: should advice about update-manager instead of apt-get for hwe

2014-07-24 Thread Peter Matulis
I saw this with an install based on 12.04.3 media. Today I did a full-
upgrade and this is what I got as motd and with running hwe-support-
status --verbose':

===

and graphics stack) of your system will no longer be available.

For more information, please see:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL

To upgrade to a supported (or longer supported) configuration:

* Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS by running:
sudo do-release-upgrade

OR

* Install a newer HWE version by running:
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-trusty
xserver-xorg-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

and reboot your system.

I confirmed that update-manager is installed:

[Bug 1312156] [NEW] [Precise] Potential for data corruption

2014-04-24 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

Under certain conditions there is faulty logic in function
tengine_stonith_notify() which can incorrectly add successfully fenced
nodes to a list, causing Pacemaker to subsequently erase that node’s
status section when the next DC (Designated Controller) election occurs.
With the status section erased, the cluster considers that node is down
and starts corresponding services on other nodes. Multiple instances of
the same service can cause data corruption.

Conditions:

1. fenced node must have been the previous DC and been sufficiently functional
to request its own fencing
2. fencing notification must arrive after the new DC has been elected but
before it invokes the policy engine

Pacemaker versions affected:

1.1.6 - 1.1.9

Stable Ubuntu releases affected:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Ubuntu 12.10 (EOL?)

Fix:

https://github.com/ClusterLabs/pacemaker/commit/f30e1e43

[Bug 1309062] [NEW] dpkg-query does not allow tilde characters

2014-04-17 Thread Peter Matulis
Public bug reported:

On a Ubuntu 12.04 install (at least) dpkg-query does not allow tilde
characters, contradicting Ubuntu Policy Manual [1].

$ dpkg -l | grep linux-image | grep ^ii
ii  linux-image-2.6.32-57-server 2.6.32-57.119
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.32 on x86_64
ii  linux-image-3.2.0-57-generic 3.2.0-57.87~lp1233175v201404142219
Linux kernel image for version 3.2.0 on 64 bit x86 SMP

$ dpkg-query -W linux-image-3*
dpkg-query: error: package name in specifier
'linux-image-3.2.0-55-generic_3.2.0-55.84~lp1233175v201310021603_amd64.deb' is
illegal: character `~' not allowed (only letters, digits and characters `-+._')

Although this works:

$ dpkg-query -W linux-image-3.2.0-57-generic

linux-image-3.2.0-57-generic3.2.0-57.87~lp1233175v201404142219

So it looks like there is a problem with the
filtering/globbing/expansion logic.

===

Upstream version:

3.2.0-55.84~lp1233175v201310021603

Policy states:

The upstream_version may contain only alphanumerics[38] and the
characters . + - : ~ (full stop, plus, hyphen, colon, tilde) and should
start with a digit. If there is no debian_revision then hyphens are not
allowed; if there is no epoch then colons are not allowed.

This is the command I used in comment #8. My gripe is how to continue
using preseed since --extra-args is incompatible with --cdrom (i.e. when
using the 'ISO workaround').

virt-install -d \
--virt-type kvm \
--hvm \
--accelerate \
--connect qemu:///system \
--os-type linux \
--noautoconsole \
--graphics vnc \
--network bridge=br0 \

--disk
$DISK_DIR/$NAME.img,size=$DISK_SIZE_GB,bus=virtio,cache=writeback \
--location
