[Bug 1842954] Re: AMD GPU hang/crash/black screen after suspend(ing)

2019-11-17 Thread Russell Smith
I'm also experiencing this problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 19.10. I'm
using xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu 19.0.1-1ubuntu1 so either it's not
completely fixed, or I'm experiencing a different but very similar
issue.

One of the linked bug reports suggested the crash occurs in the XFCE
compositor. I tried disabling the compositor:

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false

This seems to be a usable workaround for now, though it does introduce
some visual glitches.

--

More detail:

After booting to login screen, if I select an "XFCE" or "Xubuntu"
session and log in, the system crashes to a black screen and is
unresponsive to Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Ctrl-Alt-Del or anything else I try.
(Alt+SysRq+b does reboot though.)

Selecting an "Ubuntu" session is fine.

After rebooting, I see 232 lines in syslog like this:

WARNING: CPU: 2 PID: 274 at
drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/../display/dc/dcn10/dcn10_hw_sequencer.c:932

2014-12-07 Thread Russell Smith
I just upgraded my hypervisor to Ubuntu 14.04 in an attempt to resolve
this issue as Simon experienced. However under heavy I/O of 'aptitude
upgrade', I've had 3 more occurences of this with hours of upgrading the
host to 14.04. So it appears not to be related to the hypervisor.

This leads me down the path that most of the affected systems have been
upgraded from 10.04 - 12.04 - 14.04. Which would point to something
in the upgrade path affecting this. As Simon re-installed all of his
systems and didn't have the issue anymore. I could try random kernels
on machines, but some information from a kernel developer on how to
debug this would be very useful.

2014-10-02 Thread Russell Smith
Hi,

I behaved lazily... and have been trying to collect more data before
posting back. Sorry for the delay.

1. I can only reproduce the bug about once a week on 3.13 kernel that is
running on ubuntu 14.04.
2. I was lazy and after reading patches and kernel stuff, I marked it as fixed
upstream. I didn't want to go compiling my own kernel as I need all the virtio
options.

I have 5 virtual machines running on top of a md10 + md1 raid all put
into a single lvm volume. The host is running ubuntu 12.04 with a 3.2
kernel series. The guests are all virtio and running 14.04 as they have
been upgraded. Most of the 5 instances have experienced a file system
read-only event. One server has experienced 3. It is my package mirror
running approx.

So after further investigation this may not be resolved upstream. If
you can provide me with a virtio/ubuntu compatible newer kernel I can
put it on a machine and try it out. But because I can't reproduce this
at will it's very hard to give a reproduction case.

I found http://lists.openwall.net/linux-ext4/2014/05/21/2 which
indicates there is a bug somewhere if we are seeing failures where we
are. The result of that thread was more debugging put into the section
of code that reports this. I'm happy to track and patch any amount of
debug.

As the filesystem re-mounts readonly, I suspect I should move /var/log
onto another filesystem to increase the chances I'll log everything.

All the instances I've seen this on are upgraded from at least 12.04.
Some from 10.04. So there are ext3 - ext4 - ext4+ options involved in
the filesystem makeup. Reading some of the bugs on the kernel list, it
feel like this might be related to that an it will be complicated.

I've attached to examples from tune2fs to show that I have different
features attached to the different servers that are experiencing this
issue.

If you can provide any debugging advise that would be good, I've not
really done kernel debugging before. I done a lot in the application
space so I understand all the concepts.

https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/ChangeLog-3.14.2 contains
ext4 patches related to the code in this stack dump;

ad6599ab3ac98a4474544086e048ce86ec15a4d1 specifically references
incorrect freeing of the function.

I'm not able to reliably reproduce the stack dump and am not clear on
whether the commit mentioned is the complete fix for this issue.

Any follow-up would be appreciated.

[Bug 28048] Re: “firefox crash on exit if client certificates used for ssl auth”

2010-09-22 Thread Russell Smith
I do not know why, but I have not been receiving emails for the 200+
comments added to this bug report. I have received an email recently.
I've attempted to reproduce this on Lucid, updated 20 minutes ago and
have been unable too. firefox 3.6.10 is the version I'm using now.

I suspect this issue has been resolved in the significant number of
releases made since it was reported. This can be resolved as I don't
experience it in the version I have now.

[Bug 137960] Re: PDO LOB Insert Loses Bytes

2008-11-17 Thread Russell Smith
This is still a problem in hardy with all updates. I've not checked any
other versions.

I have updated the php bug with comments to see if it will be looked at
further. However due to the nature of the php bug trackers, I'm unable
to change the bug status from No Feedback to Open. Hopefully the
original reporter will make that change for me.

Also give I'm able to reproduce on hardy, the fact there is a workaround
and PHP are accepting there is a problem of some kind I've marked this
bug as Confirmed.

[Bug 257892] Re: PHP (Cli) generates invalid output when it exceeds 4kB

2008-11-17 Thread Russell Smith
Yes, different architectures is correct.

I posted the amd64 'php --version'. My i386 build reports the same
build time as the original reporter.

And still neither machine is able to produce the error.

Without more details I'm not sure how to diagnose this problem.

Pawel, you are not experiencing this on the new version of ubuntu (8.10)
and you don't have any other machines with the fault. Is that correct?

If that is all correct, should this be closed?

[Bug 63141] Re: PHP (cli) exits with a segfault if pg_connect() called.

2008-11-13 Thread Russell Smith
Hi,

I've taken the latest version of the PG patch and backported it to 8.3.3
as released in hardy.

Before the application of the below patch, the segfault appears on the
following code;

?php
$conn = pg_connect('host=localhost dbname=postgres sslmode=require');
?

After the patch application. No segfault is experienced.

That said, I'm not experienced enough with SSL to be sure I've back
ported the patch properly.

I've tried with both mcrypt extension installed and without. Neither
produces the error for me. What php extensions do you have installed.
I can only think something is going on there. Are you on 64 bit or 32
bit?

I've tried on both amd64 and 32bit. Neither produces the error.

The only other strange thing is that my build is 2 minutes later than
yours for php. Is something funny going on there. Can you force a
reinstall of php and see if the bug continues?

[Bug 63141] Re: PHP (cli) exits with a segfault if pg_connect() called.

2008-11-04 Thread Russell Smith
I have marked all the moodle reports as duplicates of this bug. They
exhibit the same symptoms as each other.

The workaround for the pg_connect generic bug is to disable the ssl
connection. Manually altering the moodle connect string in connection
library to disable ssl also removes the segmentation fault in the moodle
cron run.

The very simple patch I used to test moodle is at the bottom. This is a
workaround for the moodle problem if you don't need to use SSL for your
moodle db connections. You could also disable ssl connections at the
postgresql end by;

1. ssl = false in postgresql.conf
2. alter pg_hba.conf to only have a hostnossl entry for the moodle user.

2 is a better option as it doesn't disable all instances of ssl on the
server. It also will be faster for moodle as negotiating SSL is slow.

Overall the underlying problem is exactly the same, hence they are all
duplicates.

2008-11-03 Thread Russell Smith
Hi,

This doesn't happen to open a postgreSQL connection over SSL does it?

What other libraries does php have loaded for this crash, and what order
are they in?

This appears to be a failure of another library using SSL to do it's
cleanup properly. If you can provide the information above we may be
able to track this down further. That's if you are still experiencing
the problem at all.

Thanks

Russell.

I have tested this bug against PHP's snapshot php5.2-200805020830. I
can reproduce it on i386 using the version listed in this comment. I
have logged a bug with PHP.

I have not attached the bug URL to the upstream bug as I do now know how
to do it for php bugs.

I'll continue to follow this up with PHP developers we can get a
resolution upstream. After that we can get the patch merged into
Ubuntu.

[Bug 184747] Re: number handling in php broken on 32bit system

2008-04-25 Thread Russell Smith
My understanding is 64bit machines use 64bit integers, so 1 31 doesn't
overflow on 64bit. However on 32bit is does overflow. Even though an
unsigned integer is being printed, a signed integer is being calculated
as shown below;

printf(%s\n, (1 31)); returns -2147483648

This suggests it's wrapped back to the other end of the signed loop.

I believe the issue is that you wrap a signed integer on 32bit, and then
php doesn't get you back from the edge to give meaningful values. I
don't have the php debugging skills to nail down the specific issue with
integer wraparound. But that is certainly what's being experienced.

I've run the test in the original test script with slight different
connect parameters on hardy up to date today.  I didn't get a crash;

[Bug 107890] Re: Audcity recorder

2008-04-25 Thread Russell Smith
This doesn't not appear to be a postgresql problem. PostgreSQL doesn't
deal with sound at all. It's like to be alsa, this choice was made in
conjunction with james_w on irc.

** Changed in: alsa-driver (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: postgresql-7.4 = alsa-driver

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: postgresql-7.4
-
No input device in Audcity recorder, will not record

[Bug 219734] Re: PostgreSQL not in System-Admin-Services

2008-04-25 Thread Russell Smith
Hi,

Does it appear as Database Server (postgresql-8.2) in the list, sorted
under D.

Is it listed there. It would seem to make more sense that it's called
PostgreSQL. First we need to find out if it really is totally missing,
or just filled under a strange name.

Regards

Russell

[Bug 184747] Re: number handling in php broken on 32bit system

2008-04-25 Thread Russell Smith
My understanding is 64bit machines use 64bit integers, so 1 31 doesn't
overflow on 64bit. However on 32bit is does overflow. Even though an
unsigned integer is being printed, a signed integer is being calculated
as shown below;

printf(%s\n, (1 31)); returns -2147483648

This suggests it's wrapped back to the other end of the signed loop.

I believe the issue is that you wrap a signed integer on 32bit, and then
php doesn't get you back from the edge to give meaningful values. I
don't have the php debugging skills to nail down the specific issue with
integer wraparound. But that is certainly what's being experienced.

Re: [Bug 215532] Re: Upgrade to hardy beta fails

2008-04-13 Thread Russell Smith
Richard,

The comprehensive reply is helpful and in this case important. During
the upgrade I selected compare side by side for the bash completion,
which gave me a blank screen. I press control-C and the installation
continued as expected. It then again at the end of the upgrade asked to
configure bash completion. This time I did a regular diff. I replaced
the local copy with the version from the package. Everything finished
correctly and I had a perfectly running system.

I suspect what you see below in my log is that experience, not the
libpam0g problem I was experiencing. The original log before the manual
installation of libpam0g looks exactly like zapodots unless I'm
mistaken. I don't think I am. The log files I send are from the
sucessful upgrade. As I mentioned in the earlier mail, I don't have the
logs from the failed upgrade, I probably should have kept those. Too
late now :(

So even though it looks like the problems are different, I suspect they
are exactly the same.

Other thinking is that linux-libc-dev was required to be installed to
enable libpam0g to be installed when I didn apt-get install libpam0g.
But it's not listed in the upgrade package list.

Regards

Russell

Re: [Bug 215532] Re: Upgrade to hardy beta fails

2008-04-12 Thread Russell Smith
I have all the files and they are attached. It includes what I had at
the end of the upgrade. I did not specifically save them after the
initial failure. So what is attached is all the upgrade information I
can probably provide. Unless there is other system information that is
useful. I've also attached a package list 'dpkg -l' for the system now,
after the upgrade. I'm not well versed in what I should include in this
type of bug report, so if there are further commands I can run to give
useful information please ask.

The failure happens at the beginning stage of installing the new
packages. sources.list has been altered to hardy, but none of the hardy
packages have been installed.

Regards

Russell

[Bug 215532] Re: Upgrade to hardy beta fails

2008-04-12 Thread Russell Smith
A manual installation of libpam0g appears to fix the problem. I
experienced the same problem updating a gutsy - hardy server this
evening. Updates were applied at 18:30+10 Saturday 12th April. Upgrade
to hardy was then done at 19:00+10. This failed and investigation
followed. The upgrade appears to be running correctly after completing
the workaround below.

To work around this issue;

After the initial failure
$ sudo apt-get install libpam0g
$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Upgrade should continue as expected, it did for me.

[Bug 66863] Re: Initial USER command returns -ERR Unkown command

2006-10-22 Thread Russell Smith
A full stop and start of the server solved the problem. As I'm unable
to determine what setting I changed to cause this error to begin with,
I'm closing the bug.

The bug in the future would be that restart is not equivilent to stop
and start.
