It's been 10 days of occasional use, and no sign of the freeze. So it
seems likely that this is fixed in the latest stuff. So what's next?
Troubleshoot the Lucid freeze?

[Bug 599149] Re: [945GM] Xorg freeze

2010-07-01 Thread Stuart Read
Hi, I installed the xorg-edgers ppa and the 2.6.35-rc3 kernel from the
link you provided. Unfortunately, I can't troubleshoot the initial bug
as now the screen just flashes a square white/grey box (looks like 4:3
on my 16:10 monitor). Switching to vt1 gives a black screen. I can still
log in via ssh, so not all is lost. Should I submit a new bug for this
behaviour?

2010-06-27 Thread Stuart Read
Public bug reported:

X completely freezes, lots of dense info in dmesg. Happy to help
troubleshoot, but I'm unsure of the trigger. It only started about a

[Bug 514087] Re: Changing status in indicator-applet signs in empathy when Pidgin is running

2010-03-17 Thread Stuart Read
I can confirm this is still an issue in Lucid. I would also like to reiterate
that empathy itself is not started, just the telapathy/mission-control-5
back-end, contrary to Omer's edit of the title.
Also, it's probably a separate bug report, but after a few seconds of being
Available when pidgin is running, the Me menu switches to the offline symbol,
even though pidgin is still online.

[Bug 516887] [NEW] bcm4312 not properly handled by jockey

2010-02-03 Thread Stuart Read
Public bug reported:

Upon upgrade to lucid, wireless for my bcm4312 no longer works. While
there are probably some workarounds, people with this chipset (i.e. Dell
Mini 10v) should have a seamless upgrade experience. This means: it
still just works after upgrade.

If this is not possible, jockey should popup (as it does for other
things) to suggest the installation of the appropriate
firmware/driver/whatever. Clicking on the Activate button then
installs the correct drivers, prompting the user to connect to the
internet through other means if they are not connected.

I tried launching jockey myself but it just said the activation failed
and pointed me to a log file /var/log/jockey.log :

2010-02-03 21:47:21,538 WARNING: modinfo for module wl failed: ERROR: modinfo:
could not find module wl
2010-02-03 21:47:21,540 WARNING: /sys/module/wl/drivers does not exist, cannot

2010-02-03 21:47:21,617 DEBUG: BroadcomWLHandler enabled(): kmod disabled,
bcm43xx: blacklisted, b43: blacklisted, b43legacy: blacklisted

Clearly this is not an optimal experience.
(I wouldn't mind a pointer towards the correct way to get wireless working for
this chip, but work-arounds are not what this bug is about. Please email me
seperately).

[Bug 514087] [NEW] Changing status in indicator-applet signs in Telepathy when Pidgin is running

2010-01-28 Thread Stuart Read
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

1) Ubuntu Karmic, up to date.

2) indicator-applet-session 0.2

3) Pidgin should change status when using the indicator-applet without
logging in Telepathy.

4) When changing the status of pidgin using the indicator-applet-
session, it sucessfully changes the status of pidgin and simultaneously
signs in Telepathy. This causes single-sign-in protocols (ie MSN) to
sign out, as the Telepathy login revokes the existing Pidgin Login.

NB: This requires that these accounts are configured in empathy (ie, you
tried it out once)

I don't think that indicator-applet should be activating Telepathy on
it's own, it should only change the status of IM programs that the user
has explicity started, not just configured.

To be clear, this bug is about Metacity compositing, not Compiz. As

as an aside I've been having trouble with Compiz disabling itself on

tp-fs-Message: tf_stream_error: stream error errorno=2 error=Codec negotiation

Seems like the Gmail plugin only supports H264 codecs, but these are not
provided by Empathy.

Also:
I can confirm that sudo eject /dev/sdb works as expected.
With palimpsest, unmounting the partition and then using the _third_ eject
button works.
However, unmounting the partition and the using the _fourth_ Detach device
from system and power off button, results in exactly that happening and the
device won't return until reboot (as happens when you press the button in
Nautilus).

[Bug 362920] Re: [Dell Computer Corporation Latitude D600] suspend/resume failure

2009-09-13 Thread Stuart Read
Apparently I spoke too soon: I'm still getting the resume failure with
the latest updates of Karmic. I haven't had a chance to test the
mainline kernel yet, but here is the answers to the Suspend/Resume
questions listed above:

Did the machine break while going to sleep or waking up?
 - Machine sleeps perfectly. When waking up from sleep (by lifting the laptop
lid) it resumes in the normal way except I am presented with a black (or blank,
not sure) screen and an unresponsive system. Only hard-powering off works (ie
re-sleeping, vterms, etc don't work)

Is it reproducible?
 - I'd say 1-2 out of every 10. Symptoms are identical each time.

Did it work before?
 - I think it's always been like this.

Do you end up with flashing caps-lock or similar?/
 - No, the machine looks just like it woke up correctly, except it's completely
unresponsive.

Hopefully this helps. If I get a chance to try the mainline kernel I'll update
the bug.

Seems to me it's probably a different bug since my laptop is really
old. You should probably file a new one, this one is basically closed.
Good luck!

This has happened twice, and to report this the laptop was sucessfully

I have tested the latest alpha of Karmic, the problem does not appear to still
exist (although it was intermittent to begin with). Also, suspend/resume is

[Bug 404185] Re: dell mini 10v SD/SDHC slot gets ejected from the USB bus on nautilus 'eject'

Based on information I came across on the MyDellMini forum, I think the card
reader is not actually on the USB bus. Maybe PCI, PCMIA or something? I am also
seeing this bug as of August.
Is there anything else I can do to contribute to this bug?

[Bug 405089] [NEW] Gnome panel (UNR) disappears with metacity compositor enabled

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

[Bug 405089] Re: Gnome panel (UNR) disappears with metacity compositor enabled

2009-07-26 Thread Stuart Read
I'm seeing a number of other related symptoms now:
 - alt-tab won't show the window-switching pop-up, still works
 - Gnome-DO won't pop up
 - Menus don't draw on click
 - small firefox window overlay on minimize-all (attached since it's hard to
describe)

All these symptoms come and go seemingly randomly, although I always see
at least one of them at any given time.

[Bug 342981] Re: Mouse cursor jumps around

2009-03-31 Thread Stuart Read
Hi,
As of recent updates (not sure when exactly) this problem has resolved itself.
It may have been caused by the poor performance of the intel graphics chip on
my computer, as the problem got better when the graphics performance improved
(using UXA).

Thanks,
Stuart

[Bug 342981] Re: Mouse cursor jumps around

2009-03-16 Thread Stuart Read
Hi, thanks for the quick response. Here is the information:

Model/make: Dell Bluetooth keyboard/mouse with Bluetooth adaptor.
Despite the Bluetooth connection, it operates in a USB keyboard/mouse emulation
mode as far as I know.

I have to unplug it and plug it back in to log into the computer, which
is annoying but after that the mouse was usable until a little while ago
in Jaunty (and before that in 8.10 and 8.04).

Now it is basically unusable, as clicking buttons and whatnot is
horribly imprecise.

[Bug 342981] [NEW] Mouse cursor jumps around

2009-03-14 Thread Stuart Read
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

1) Ubuntu Jaunty (Mar 14th updates)
2) not sure exactly what package this relates to
3) Mouse to work smoothly
4) Mouse jumps around, either when I'm moving it or when something is loading.
Movement amount varies from 1-4 cm.

Let me know what more information I can provide. As you can imagine,
having the cursor jump around as you try to click something makes it
very difficult.

[Bug 330383] Re: MTP is preferred over UMS/MSC

I have the same problem with a Sony Walkman NWZ-S618. Since the MTP has
decreased functionality over the UMS(no access to pictures, video, drag-

[Bug 287303] Re: install or LiveCD fail because of bluetooth KB/Mouse

2009-02-27 Thread Stuart Read
I've been having a possibly related issue with the same keyboard/mouse
combo. Have you tried unplugging the dongle and then plugging it back
in? While awkward, this works for me. I can't figure out why this is
happening, but I think it has to do with whether the dongle is in
Bluetooth adaptor mode or (as you call it) 'legacy' mode. I think
plugging it back in after boot triggers this legacy mode, as it doesn't
show up under the bluetooth menu. This is actually the desired behaviour
for me, since I triple-boot the system and re-pairing bluetooth every
boot is not a fun time.

dmesg seems to agree, as the dongle seems to show up as a USB hub with a
keyboard and a mouse attached (see attached).

[Bug 335698] [NEW] Run terminal keyboard shortcut broken with Desktop Effects

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

After updating from 8.10 to 9.04 Alpha 5, my Run Terminal keyboard

Aha! In trying to repeat the bug I discovered a condition. It only
seems to occur if a pdf is already open in another workspace. I didn't
notice this before because I always have a pdf or two open for
reference in another workspace.

So:
Open a pdf file.
In Firefox _in another workspace_:
Click download link to pdf file, select open pdf from popup menu, pdf
pops up and is readable but does not grab focus (light window bar).

Hope that helps!

[Bug 197819] Re: [Hardy]b43-fwcutter install script fails to fetch firmware in first run

2008-03-23 Thread Stuart Read
Hey folks, I think there's two separate problems here:
1. The restricted drivers program installs the fwcutter in such a way that it
doesn't offer to download the firmware, while installing the same package via
synaptic does. This is obviously confusing for new users, but can be solved by
simply completely removing the b43-fwcutter package and reinstalling it via
synaptic.

2. There is an outstanding bug in network-manager which causes it to
crash after asking for a wireless passphrase. This bug is solved by the
debdiff posted in Bug #204868, but hasn't been applied to the network-
manager package in the repositories yet.

2008-03-22 Thread Stuart Read
Pavel:
I have the exact same problem, also with b43 firmware. I have uploaded my
daemon.log to Bug #145652, and the output and symptoms are identical.

[Bug 204768] Re: [hardy] Latest HAL breaks guidance powermanager

2008-03-22 Thread Stuart Read
Mikael Gerdin pointed me in the direction of this bug. I have not had
any of the power management problems, but my network-manager crashes in
a related manner (Bug #199066, Bug #145652). Relevant daemon.log is
attached. Note that this problem remains with hal version
0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu2.

[Bug 145652] Re: network-manager ask for wireless encryption key

2008-03-21 Thread Stuart Read
I have the same problem with a Dell Latitude D600, bcm4306 card. After
fixing the problem in bug 197819
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819) the
wireless allowed me to connect to my network, but after providing the
network key it just hangs. I have attached a section of my daemon.log,
which seems to contain relevant information.

[Bug 145153] Re: Nikon D40 mass storage not accessible via USB

2007-12-20 Thread Stuart Read
I used my Nikon D50 yesterday and it operated perfectly as before. This
is with a fully updated version of Gutsy. Note that earlier this fall it
did not work with an updated version of Gutsy, so along the way an
update must have fixed the problem, at least for me. Perhaps others who
had this problem could recheck with an updated system.

[Bug 137861] Restricted-manager has no respository information on first boot

2007-09-06 Thread Stuart Read
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

After installing Gusty Tribe 5, on the first boot the restricted-manager
indicates that there is firmware available for my bcm4306 card. When I
click enable, it complains that the required package bcm43xx-fwcutter is
not available in the selected repositories. However, when I check in
Software Sources, all the required repos were enabled. I was forced to
deselect, and then reselect Universe, which then forced Software Sources
to update the package lists. Note that I had internet via ethernet at
the time.
