[Bug 1574054] Re: Logout on first attempt fails, killing desktop icons

2018-05-31 Thread Zaphod BIII via ubuntu-bugs
Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS,
Linux kyoko 4.4.0-127-generic #153-Ubuntu SMP Sat May 19 10:58:46 UTC 2018
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have the same problem.

In my case it is also the Clipboard manager Diodon - as Wayne Stark
(w-stark) wrote on 2016-05-08

Workaround: Right mouse click icon "paper clip" (Diodon), select quit
and log out will be successful again.

(By the way: Diodon Preferences, if selected, will not appear as the top
most window)

[Bug 1566302] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: Suspend freezes the system after upgrade to linux image 4.4.0-16

2016-05-21 Thread Zaphod
For my Machine (Lenovo Thinkpad X201) 4.4.0-21 works with minor glitiches,
4.4.0-22 breaks it: Graphic errors after resume, correction requires reboot.
4.2 (used on the 14.04-Installation before) worked perfectly. 4.4 on the 14.04
worked with glitches.

[Bug 1469273] Re: ICC profile doesn't get applied when proprietary Nvidia driver is in use

2015-08-21 Thread Zaphod Beeblebrox
My ICC profile was not used, too (Xubuntu 14.04, loading ICC with xcalib
in XFCE's autostart options). I realized that the NVIDIA X Server
Settings tool is always loaded at startup and resets the display's
color. After I deactivated it (removed the mark in Settings Manager -
Session and Startup) my ICC profile works.

[Bug 1114253] Re: system freeze while simple-scan (canon, usb)

2013-02-07 Thread Zaphod BIII
Hallo Michael

Thank you for responding.
The problem is not caused by Simple Scan. Simple Scan supports my scanner
perfectly.
However both Simple Scan and XSANE can be used to reproduce a USB problem which
leads to system freeze.
The freeze happens if the scanner is not listed in first position of USB device
enumeration.

Best Regards
Marcus

2011-10-16 Thread Zaphod
This has been resolved after I found a BIOS update for the u43F and
updated from 215 to 216. I have a separate bug for not being able to
use Unity3D but I will research that.

[Bug 872079] [NEW] Unity is slow and unusable

2011-10-10 Thread Zaphod
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install when logging in with Unity and Unity 2D it takes
5-10+ min to get any type of usable desktop. Typing takes a few seconds
for each character and running any applications is impossible. This is
on a machine that has 8GB of RAM and a core i5 CPU and Intel HD
graphics. Installing Gnome Shell makes the system usable.

Also the fans are running very loud when trying to use Unity. The laptop
is a ASUS u43F and it runs Ubuntu 11.04 just fine.

[Bug 684693] Re: Aero peek like functionality for the launcher

2011-05-09 Thread Zaphod
Mark,
Nice to see you personally reply! Now that you guys have a solid 1.0 for Unity
under your belt I think this would be very helpful for normal day to day work
flow.

I found for me Unity became a whole lot more usable once I shrank the
size and anchored it in place. Now that computers have a wide display I
don't think we need to have it always hidden. I found 90% of my time was
spent unhiding the menu.

Now Unity works very well but the the peek type functionality would be nice
when you only need to bring one window of an application to the foreground.
Thanks,

Nicholas

[Bug 636363] [NEW] After importing backend.ldif I get Invalid credentials (49)

2010-09-12 Thread Zaphod
Public bug reported:

So I was trying to document configuring a new OpenLDAP install in
Maverick but I ran into problems pretty quick. After I import my
backend.ldif file I am unable to import the front end because of the
error Invalid credentials (49).

Here is what I did. I can't see any mistakes so far:

sudo apt-get install slapd ldap-utils

load some additional schema files

sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/cosine.ldif
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/nis.ldif
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/inetorgperson.ldif

create a file called backend.lan.local.ldif

load it into the LDAP

sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f backend.lan.local.ldif

Create a file called frontend.lan.local.ldif on the server.

[Bug 583539] Re: Lucid freeze during large file transfer

2010-09-10 Thread Zaphod
Looks like kernel 2.6.35.4-maverick (2.6.35-02063504-generic
#201008271919) fixes this bug!

I've been transferring hundreds of GB between two drives for the past
hour without a freeze. Gnome does hiccup momentarily, e.g. while typing
this firefox will become unresponsive (greyish window) for a few seconds
but it's certainly acceptable compared to the hard crash I was
experiencing. Unfortunately, I never was able to successfully generate
a crashdump.

[Bug 374650] Re: Wireless Disconnects When Loaded by Torrent Traffic, Must Reboot To Reconnect

2010-07-20 Thread Zaphod
I don't think it has ever happened to me when using the wired connection
but I rarely use it.

I have found the following to help a lot:

1. Install the Bleeding edge wireless drivers (every time the Kernel gets
updated you must recompile and install them though)
2. Configure a static ip address on your wireless interface.
3. Use an access point that is not using wireless N (for me wireless N causes
the problem more frequently)

Rather than rebooting you can right click on the wireless icon to
uncheck enable wireless and then recheck it and you don't need to
reboot the computer.

[Bug 602540] [NEW] ldapadduser adds the user and hangs

2010-07-06 Thread Zaphod
Public bug reported:

I followed this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html

I have installed the ldapscripts package and when I use the command
ldapadduser user group
It says the user has been added to LDAP but then it hangs if I press CTRL-C I
can see the user has been added but the user has not been added to the group. I
can then manually add the user to the group.

There seams to be some issue with the ldapadduser command.

one thing that helps so you don't need to reboot is right click on network
manager and uncheck wireless then re-check wireless.

Also I have seen some improvement by assigning a static ip to the network
adapter but it is still present.

Re: [Bug 374650] Re: Wireless Disconnects When Loaded by Torrent Traffic, Must Reboot To Reconnect

2010-05-27 Thread Zaphod
This is a good start for reporting bugs as well as the Ubuntu
forums. Unfortunately this bug has been around for a while it seams to be
with some intel wireless chips. For some reason I have found that installing
9.04 and upgrading to the latest version seams to fix the problem. At east
it did for me when I was using 9.10. With that said I am running a
regular fresh install of 10.04 right now. I have found that if you right
click on the Wireless and uncheck wireless and then recheck wireless it will
save you a reboot when it is acting up.

Some people have said it is related to using Wireless N but I would rather
have the faster LAN speed than disable it.

Hopefully it isn't an issue with the newer chipsets I think I am going to
buy a HP Envy 15 this summer.

My Dell XPS m1500 is falling apart on me (literally).

Thanks,
Nicholas Vilppu
