[Bug 998630] Re: plasma netbook shell crashes on kubuntu 12.04 and 12.10

2012-06-06 Thread eagles051387
hey guys I got bold this morning and I wanted to try remove kde all
together and reinstall it via the meta package. I purged kubuntu-desktop
then i did it again doing kubuntu-* since it didnt get all of the
desktop. I rebooted and for some reason i have kde still installed but
the normal desktop version and not the netbook version. all menus bar at
the bottom works flawlessly. it seems like those crashes are netbook
specific.

[Bug 998630] Re: plasma netbook shell crashes on kubuntu 12.04 and 12.10

2012-06-06 Thread eagles051387
ok just restarted and reinstalled kubuntu-desktop meta package after
purging and set it to desktop and i have the upper menu bar as well as
the one on the bottom. if i set it to netbook only it does not show up
correctly. which now just crashed and sadly i wasnt able to get a back
trace :(

oddly now setting netbook in system settings i have 2 menu bars one at
the top one at the bottom :(

i can confirm this as well, but an interesting thing we tried was
reverting to the inital 3.0.0 precise server kernel, and then booted
back on the 3.2.0-17 kernel which worked for a while then the same issue
surfaced.

running precise 64bit

our server is running lvm but not on an SSD drive

[Bug 551432] Re: virt-manager create disk image with LVM hangs for ever

2012-01-19 Thread eagles051387
I have been doing some testing now and what i cannot comprehend is that
when running virt-manager --debug i am able to create a new volume no
issue. The problem seems to arise if you are not in debug mode. When in
debug mode and choose new volume it seems like nothing is logged by the
debugger.

Also tested this on an ubuntu 11.10 virtual machine running on virtual-
box the application runs perfectly fine and doesn't lock up when
selecting new volume, but on a non virtualized install unless in debug
mode the application locks, nothing gets outputted to debug on the
console.

NEW WORK AROUND FOR THOSE NOT RUNNING IN A VIRTUAL MACHINE.

If you must create a new volume run virt-manager with the --debug switch

I honestly dont think we can pin it to nvidia per se. some people have
managed to get it to work by disabling desktop effects, others by
downgrading Xorg and others by using the --notransperancy switch.

 @eagles051387
I'm sorry but I beg to differ. I think we CAN pin the blame fairly and
squarely on nVidia. This is a copy of the latest response I have received
from nVidia's customer care, following yet another a fairly strongly worded
email from me with regard to nVidia's total lack of activity in this regard:-

 Hello,

I escalated this problem to the Linux Engineering Manager. An Engineer
has been assigned to work on this at high priority. We are targeting the
fix for the upcoming 275.xx driver which is currently planned to ship in
 early June 2011.

Added to which, it is NOT just Konsole that is affected. Granted it is the
app most likely to crash the entire system. But resizing gnome-terminal will
also crash the system - though I accept you need to try harder in order to do
so. Then there is the matter of the weird desktop artefacts. Sure, there are
workarounds for the crashing - though I've yet to find a workaround for the
 artefacts.

Fact is that nVidia claims to support Linux. Many users, including
myself, bought nVidia products on the basis of nVidia's advertised
claim. Remember, nVidia's software products are also closed source,
which means its users are lumbered with whatever it provides. Added to
which, nVidia is NOT just a handful of well-meaning open-source type
guys, working for free in their bedrooms. nVidia is a massive, profit-
making, NASDAQ 100 corporation, with more than 6000 employees and an
estimated enterprise value of $9.6 billion. In other words, nVidia has
PLENTY of resources at its disposal.

Therefore, the onus is clearly on nVidia to honour its advertised claims
and fix the problem. It is not for its users to work around it.

 Best wishes, G

Firstly Im glad you contacted them and they escalated this issue, but in
digging through the nvidia site i did find some developer resources that
allows one to develop stuff for their cards such as drivers etc. I agree
though it depends on the application that might trigger this, but in all
honesty i find it funny how only certain apps are triggering a full
system lock up. for me it would be maximizing kvirc.

You can already get the info about the cards so that one can code a
driver from scratch if I am not mistaken.

Thing is, NVIDIA has been aware of the issue for over a month! Five

timely manner, then it should release the source code so that others may
 have a go?

I shall certainly remember this fiasco next time I ever consider
purchasing an NVIDIA product. Meantime, if I do find a fix then I will
post it here. But don't hold your breath! NVIDIA clearly is in no hurry
to fix this and we could be waiting quite a long time.

Finally, it is possible to hang the system with gnome-terminal too!
Granted, gnome-terminal is not quite as unstable as konsole. But if you
fill the gnome-terminal window (e.g. run ls on a large directory),
then grab the edge of the gnome-terminal window and resize it a bit,
then it will start creating some strange artefacts on-screen. If you
continue resizing then eventually it will hang. Sometimes you will have
to wobble it about a bit. Other times it will hang straight away.

the above are listed at kernel.org. stefan it would greatly be appreciated if
this gets in prior

able to connect
to the internet without it.

The information provided is unfortunately not very specific. At least
not enough to pick the one patch that fixes the problem. Realistically
today would be the last day for an upload and that makes it unlikely.
But the updates from 2.6.38.3 are scheduled to be in the next update
after release. And that should also happen quite close after release.

[Bug 762496] [NEW] atheros wifi cards cause kernel panic when connecting to wpa2 secured wifi networks

2011-04-16 Thread eagles051387
Public bug reported:

I have discovered a very serious bug with the kernel on ubuntu natty
64bit .

upon doing some digging on the upstream irc i was told there was a patch
which fixed this issue from upstream.

when connecting to wpa networks this issue doesnt arise its only
specific to wpa2.

I am unable to provide any more informamtion due to the kernel panic
requiring me to do a hard reboot.

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.38.3.tar.bz2

I am going to recompile the kernel from upstream source to test if this
fixes the issue, but in the mean time can the patch be included in the
kernel.

Probably in a Natty repository. usually for every release ubuntu sync
with upstream Debian, but i'm not sure which repos they pull from Debian.

However, I have no experience how this is handled in Ubuntu: The bug is
fixed in Ubuntu, so Roundcube 0.5 should be in some repository, but I
cannot find it. Could you please give me a hint? Thanks.

So, basically you're saying that it is inconvenient when bugs like this
arise. You would like it to be ironed out pre-release, in a beta
testing environment. The problem is that no matter how much you beta
test, there will always be problems that arise in the field. You say
you are an electrical engineer, but that you haven't contributed much to
the Open Source Community. That is unfortunate, because you may have a
 lot to offer.

My point is that there will always be bugs, and we should all be
grateful that this forum of submitting, monitoring and working on bugs
 submitted from the community exists.

My issue with you was your choice of language. If you like Closed
Source better, then by all means buy a mac or windows pc. I hear
Windows 7 may even be a good distro for a change.

The point of bugsquad and this forum in general is for finding
constructive ways to fix bugs. Foul language will NOT be permitted.

Also, I've installed and uninstalled java6 several times on my Lucid
machine several times, with no problems.

then in that case do you still have the issue of licensing when installing
openjdk and openjre via k/ubuntu-restricted-extras. i use the openjdk and
openjre just fine without this issue. again these are also made by sun,
oracle now, and dont have the issue of having to accept the license.

openjdk and openjre via k/ubuntu-restricted-extras. i use the openjdk
 and
openjre just fine without this issue. again these are also made by
 sun,
oracle now, and dont have the issue of having to accept the license.

So, basically you're saying that it is inconvenient when bugs like
  this
arise. You would like it to be ironed out pre-release, in a beta
testing environment. The problem is that no matter how much you
 beta
test, there will always be problems that arise in the field. You
 say
you are an electrical engineer, but that you haven't contributed
 much
  to
the Open Source Community. That is unfortunate, because you may
 have
  a
lot to offer.

My point is that there will always be bugs, and we should all be
grateful that this forum of submitting, monitoring and working on
  bugs
submitted from the community exists.

My issue with you was your choice of language. If you like Closed
Source better, then by all means buy a mac or windows pc. I hear
Windows 7 may even be a good distro for a change.

The point of bugsquad and this forum in general is for finding
constructive ways to fix bugs. Foul language will NOT be
 permitted.

Also, I've installed and uninstalled java6 several times on my
 Lucid
machine several times, with no problems.

[Bug 578210] Re: ubiquity fails to install kubuntu on lucid 64bit

2010-05-11 Thread eagles051387
just another update here guys turns out that the problem stems from the
kernel itself the ubuntu desktop kernel doesnt have gpt compiled into
it. i used the ubuntu server install which in the kernel has gpt
compiled and it seems to have solved the problems. would it be possible
to get the desktop kernel compiled with gpt for lucid and mavrick?

[Bug 578210] [NEW] ubiquity fails to install kubuntu on lucid 64bit

2010-05-10 Thread eagles051387
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

im not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but i might have stumbled on
somethign very serious. ubiquity fails to install unless im using debug mode.
without debug mode i manage to get my drive formatted after turning of acpi
during boot up. after partitioning it gives me lots of error messages regarding
shared objects and what is being installed is a different version on the cd, in
my case live usb. tried a 2nd usb and the same issue. some of the objects after
hitting retry get installed but in the end the entire install fails. the error
says its errno5 input/output. this occured using 2 different usb pen drives.
running ubiquity -d from the command line all i got one shared object error
which i was able to get installed.

attached should be the bug report that you wanted riddell.

i am also noticing when i get what seems a kernel panic during install
there are 2 errors with smbus smb1 and smb2 im on an nforce 750i chipset
on my asus p5n-d motherboard. im not sure if those could be the issues
with the i/o errors im getting.

Which manually changes to lucid, gets the 64bit version of the latest
lucid mountall (change to the i386 if not running 64 bit), forces
mountall to install without the dependancies, then fixes the
dependancies and does a dist-upgrade to upgrade everything else.

On a bare-metal karmic install this worked fine, and the server has

then if this bug has had a fix released for it then this bug can im guessing
be marked as fix released and link it to the answers link.

Fixing this in Hardy is not about to happen unless someone cares enough to
file a Stable Release Update request, using this process:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

 Citing:
Once an Ubuntu release has been completed and published, updates for it
are only released under certain circumstances, and must follow a special
procedure called a stable release update or SRU.

Any further questions about this or similar issues should happen in the

 released:

check out the drivers from linuxwireless.org im not sure if that will help

you that an offline installation method is needed.

install this driver without having access to the internet. b43-fwcutter
needs an offline .deb as it is currently dependent on an Internet
connection and openwrt.org servers be up, which assumes too much about
 the users setup.

in command line type

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

sudo being the password that you use to login

my opinion about mixxx is it needs heavy development. i am a kubuntu user
and i never got sound to work wiht it i never could, also it would
constantly freeze and crash on me.
