[Bug 1753509] Re: avahi-daemon adds/installs every printer on network

2022-01-04 Thread ghomem
This is a problem when running a set of desktops with a traditional CUPS
server that advertises its printers. The desktops should see only the
server queues but by default they get duplicated (or even multiplicated
entries) because the printers also advertise themselves.

The setting suggested by Till on cups-browsed.conf

CreateIPPPrinterQueues No

does not seem to have any effect. The undesired printers remain visible
and listable with

lpstat -e

Applications like Libreoffice and oKular will show a list of redundant
printers, which is, of course, confusing.

[Bug 1854976] Re: systemd-resolved doesn't work with "host -l" / AXFR queries

2019-12-03 Thread ghomem
Hi,

I work with Jose Manuel Santamaria Lema.

Thank you for taking your time to review.

Perhaps we should be a little cautious in regards what we call "normal"
and "reasonable". During the last 20+ years of Linux people able were to
do "host -l" against servers that were configured to allow so - for
example internal name servers that are authoritative for local (LAN
related) domains - using directly the local resolver

I would call the ability to do such queries "normal" and "reasonable"
because it has been common practice during the last 20+ years. Yesterday
was the first time that I have seen the possibility of such queries not
working (20.04 early builds). Linux Torvalds usually says "we don't
break user space" when changes in the kernel cause problems on user
space applications that have certain expectations regarding how the
kernel behaves because tradition is some kind of jurisprudence. I feel
this is kind of the same situation.

Apart from common practice we could think of other criteria for deciding
this. For example what the RFCs say. I am by no mean a DNS authority -
please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Digging little bit I found
this:

An AXFR query is sent by a client whenever there is a reason to ask.
This might be because of scheduled or triggered zone maintenance
activities (see Section 4.3.5 of RFC 1034 and DNS NOTIFY [RFC1996],
respectively) or as a result of a command line request, say for
   debugging.

Note that it mentions debugging and that ubuntu users are not the
average computer "end users" but often a more technical crowd that uses
computers to configure and debug. Also, the document refers to
"resolvers and servers" and doesn't say AXFR queries are exclusive to
authoritative servers.

In that context, does not seek like an accident that it worked with
dnsmasq - seems the dnsmasq implemented the feature, like bind and
others do.

Reference:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5936

Lastly, I would say that the decision to downgrade or not the local
resolver should come from Ubuntu, rather than systemd. This might not be
an "end of the world" situation but still it is a regression that should
be assessed, with gains and losses from the resolver change fairly
weighted.

Thank you,

[Bug 1707810] Re: regression on udev rules for HUAWEI mobile broadband?

2017-08-01 Thread ghomem
Strange as this sounds I went to try the solution above on a different
computer with the same Ubuntu version (16.04) and didn't work - device
appeared as mass storage. The line that worked was this one:

ATTR{idVendor}=="12d1", ATTR{idProduct}=="1f01",
RUN+="/usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1f01 -J"

which bypasses the udev modeswitch wrapper and has the parameters
hardcoded. [1]

There is a related bug on the Debian bug tracker:

place but the udev rules are incomplete, in what could be a regression
from previous versions.

For earlier samba versions (ex: 3.5.x) the extra client does not help.
Don't know from which version on the samba server starts to work with

remove upstart without dependency problems - simply ran "apt-get remove
upstart".

[Bug 1572122] Re: Samba upgrade to 3.6.25-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 break domain authentication

2016-05-02 Thread ghomem
According the reporter's description "Linux client can authentificate
themselves without problems." - this seems NOT to be the case. This
upgrade broke the ability for 12.04 linux clients to join a samba
managed domain.

Using the usual configuration files and current domain join creds we
would get on the linux client:

Connection failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

After downgrading the 12.04 linux client with

apt-get install samba=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 samba-common=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2
smbclient=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 samba-common-bin=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 samba-
doc=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 libwbclient0=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 libpam-
smbpass=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 winbind=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2 libpam-
winbind=2:3.6.3-2ubuntu2

the ability to join is back and everything works normally (nsswitch,
pam, etc)

[Bug 1396637] [NEW] deads keys / accented characters stop working on Libreoffice after windows loses focus

2014-11-26 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

deads keys / accented characters stop working on Libreoffice after
windows loses focus

On Ubuntu 14.04 with KDE:

1. open libreoffice
2. write áéíóú
3. click on another window or use alt+tab
4. clock on libreoffice window or use alt+tab
5. write áéíóu and get aeiou instead

The situation can be worked around by running

unset XMODIFIERS
libreoffice

from a terminal.

We can certainly set unset XMODIFIERS on

/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice

but that will not survice libreoffice upgrades.

We could also unset XMODIFIERS on .bash_profile but we want the
workaround to be limited to libreoffice without causing side effects on
other apps.

Conclusion: we need a solution that comes directly from Ubuntu's
repositories.

Any comments?

We are available for further debugging and testing.

Note: there are similar bug reports published but this is the closest
one

[Bug 771857] Re: Realtek 8168B (r8169) interface not working following suspend

2013-10-08 Thread ghomem
We found that after a resume / suspend cycle the interface goes back to
work if it is put in promiscuous mode. This was found by accident while
running tcpdump to see if there was traffic going through.

This can be tested afer resume with:

1.

ifconfig eth0 promisc
activate interface in Network Manager
 will work

2. deactivate interface in Network Manager

3.

ifconfig eth0 -promsic
activate interface in Network Manager
... will fail

Therefore, the problem can be worked around by creating
/etc/pm/power.d/10_eth0_promisc with

#!/bin/bash

ifconfig eth0 promisc

and give this file execution permissions.

This will ensure that after resume the interface comes up in promiscuous
mode.

[Bug 1083407] [NEW] subtle upstart race condition with rc-sysinit scripts

2012-11-26 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

In fast machines one can see a race condition related to the old-style
sysinit scripts that upstart runs. I noticed this on a virtual machine.

The symptoms are:

- winbind is hung on a futex call (only one winbind proc is visible, unlike
the usual situation)
- xrdp is not launched because start-stop-daemon is also hanging on a futex call
- ...

Perhaps these daemons are being launched before networking or DNS.

Process 916 attached - interrupt to quit
futex(0xb666cd08, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NUL

However if we insert an S10sleep script on rc2.d, with

sleep 5

the problem disappears. That is, winbind and xrdp start up normally.

Notes:

I have the latest upstart package installed.
The problem is reproducible

[Bug 1083407] [NEW] subtle upstart race condition with rc-sysinit scripts

2012-11-26 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

In fast machines one can see a race condition related to the old-style
sysinit scripts that upstart runs. I noticed this on a virtual machine.

The symptoms are:

- winbind is hung on a futex call (only one winbind proc is visible, unlike
the usual situation)
- xrdp is not launched because start-stop-daemon is also hanging on a futex call
- ...

Perhaps these daemons are being launched before networking or DNS.

Process 916 attached - interrupt to quit
futex(0xb666cd08, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NUL

However if we insert an S10sleep script on rc2.d, with

sleep 5

the problem disappears. That is, winbind and xrdp start up normally.

Notes:

I have the latest upstart package installed.
The problem is reproducible

[Bug 930589] Re: lightning-locales should be part of the official ubuntu archives

2012-11-12 Thread ghomem
To provide translations it is enough to

1)

Include the corresponding jars in a locales package or even in the base
lightning package.

Example:

/usr/lib/xul-ext/lightning/chrome/calendar-pt-PT.jar
/usr/lib/xul-ext/lightning/chrome/lightning-pt-PT.jar

2)

Update the chrome.manifest file to include the corresponding lines:

locale calendar pt-PT jar:chrome/calendar-pt-PT.jar!/locale/pt-PT/calendar/
locale lightning pt-PT jar:chrome/lightning-pt-PT.jar!/locale/pt-PT/lightning/

[Bug 1066468] [NEW] recent mobile broadband devices don't work

2012-10-14 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

On LTS releases, the 3G information database should be kept up to date
for recent devices to work.

For example, I recently found out that the Huawei K3772 device did not
work out of the box because usbmodeswitch wouldn't switch it to the
right mode. The usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data pacakges were up
to date.

For this device the system could be fixed by creating a file called:

/etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1526

containing

TargetVendor=  0x12d1
TargetProduct= 0x14cf

MessageContent=555342437f028a11062100

--

plus adding to /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules the following
lines:

# Huawei K3772
ATTRS{idVendor}==12d1, ATTRS{idProduct}==1526, RUN+=usb_modeswitch '%b/%k'

Since reporting one bug per device that doesn't work is too much
overhead, can we have a meta bug just for this and let the users
contribute their product IDs to guide the updating of the pacakge?

[Bug 1024475] Re: libnss-ldap causes boot hang on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

2012-07-19 Thread ghomem
Hi,

We are using the Ubuntu's default network configuration, nothing done
manually on /etc/interfaces.

It does bring the network up before login and works perfectly with
nss_winbind.

So the problem is likely the integration of nss_ldap on Ubuntu and not
the network configuration.

[Bug 1024475] [NEW] libnss-ldap causes boot hang on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise

2012-07-13 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

A configuration that works perfectly after setup prevents an Ubuntu
12.04 Precise client from booting.

Checks before rebooting:

1. winbind authentication is working (console login, xrdp, etc)
2. libnss-ldap name resolution is working (getent passwd)

(this is the intended setup)

After booting the default Grub option we see the machine hung without
printing anything.

Booting in recovery mode allows us to see that the last printed message
is:

Begin: Running /scrips/init-bottom ... done.

The problem IS related to libnss-ldap because if we boot via cdrom and
change nsswitch.conf to use local authentication the machine boots again
perfectly. We can then change it back to use local authentication + ldap
(compat ldap) and verify that it works. However the system won't come up
after rebooting.

Even though the nss_initgroups_ignoreusers is correctly setup there is
provavly some service that is trying to use ldap before networking is
available. The extra options (see below) intended to lower timeouts seem
to have no effect.

Configuration details:

stop)

[Bug 908667] Re: system-config-printer can't determine username if multiple users are logged in

2012-01-02 Thread ghomem
Hello Lars,

Details follow:

Ubuntu 10.04
cups 1.4.3-ubuntu3
system-config-printer-gnome 1.2.0+20100408-0ubuntu5.2
system-config-printer ran as a regular user (cups permissions setup
accordingly...)

I know that cupsUser should return only one user name but apparently it
does not. It returns a \n separated list of users instead. This a sample
from the cups log where 3 users were returned:

D [21/Dec/2011:12:06:22 +] add_job: requesting-user-name=dep5
 cinf
 dep1

You can see the line breaks on the cups log.

System-config-printer was probably tested on workstations with a single
user logged in at once (login via physical console...) whereas the
scenario we found problems with is a desktop VM where multiple users can
be logged via SSH or RDP (xrdp).

To reproduce this you may have to setup xrdp and open sessions for at
least 2 users at once.

Anyway it seems that would be better to have system-config-printer use a
method that simply returns the calling user, rather than depend on a
Cups function that does something less trivial and fails under certain
conditions.

Public bug reported:

system-config printer doesn't work if multiple users are logged in.

The use of:

self._use_user = cups.getUser ()

leads to

This should be replaced by:

import getpass

 self._use_user = getpass.getuser()

[Bug 828813] [NEW] ntlm_auth fails to use cached credentials

2011-08-18 Thread ghomem
Public bug reported:

When a user is authenticated against an AD server it is supposed to be
able to use Windows Integrate Authentication for login on NTLM based
websites. This means that the user won't be prompted for a password on
such sites since the cached credentials can be used.

On Linux this is achieved by using the ntlm_auth command which is broken
on winbind from samba 3.4. There is an upstream bug report and official
patch for samba 3.5 here:

https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7589

If possible this should be backported to 10.04 LTS.

** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 553759] Re: ubuntuone-preferences crashed with NoSuchKeyringError in __init__()

2011-06-29 Thread ghomem
I confirm what Bruno Leon stated. This bug is NOT fixed.

With package

gnome-keyring2.92.92.is.2.30.3-0ubuntu1.1

a default keyring file omissão.keyring (note the tilde...) is created
when I launch, for example, Evolution.

With this default file keyring usage is broken. Every program is asking
for the password.

[Bug 722154] Re: Importing PKCS12 (.p12) files into Firefox From the Command Line

2011-05-04 Thread ghomem
Importing Firefox certificates from the command line using certutil /
pk12util

Just for the record:

1) a solution is posted by the reporter here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1690438.html

2) the subject of this question should be changes for importing
certificates in general

Root CAs, for example can be imported like this:

certutil -d $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/r0zlvjfg.default/ -A -t TC,c,c -i
CERTIFICATEFILE -n CERTIFICATENAME

Tested with lastest libnss3-tools and openssl

[Bug 740642] Re: [natty] exchange 2010 evolution-mapi - no folders or calendar, contact, tasks

2011-04-26 Thread ghomem
I confirm that this patch works. As far as accented folder names are
concerned, after applying the patch:

1- it is NOT possible to CREATE folder with accented names from Evolution
2- it is possible to RETRIEVE folders with accented names that were created vi
OWA (web interface)

Fabien,

Did you test accented folder names with your patched version?
