As I said, the file size depends heavily on the compression.

You are using JPG compression, which is good for photo-type images, but
 not for scans of text.

The image is 8-bit, when 1-bit would have done.

You say that you are using thresholding, but the log file doesn't show
 this.
Yes, it does, on lines 76 and 80

Try scanning with scan mode = lineart, and save the PDF with compression
 = auto.

Ok, it works fines this way, thank you for your help. It would be nice
to document that somewhere , because in my opinion, many scan are done
just for plain text documents.
I am really pleased with your help, fast and efficient, and with this
program.
Cheers

This depends heavily on the compression options you chose when saving
the PDF, and whether you embedded OCR output. Please start with

 gscan2pdf --log=log

save a PDF, close gscan2pdf, and post the log file.

Thank you for your quick answer.
In my scanning options I use neither ocr output nor file cleaning (I use
a french user interface, it might be scan cleaning instead of file cleaning)
You will find as attached files:
1. the log output (log_gscan.txt)
2. the file as output by gscan2pdf (test_gscan2pdf_1_500-12.pdf) : 500
means white threshold=0.500 and 12 black threshold=0.12
3. the file as output by simple-scan (test_simplescan_1.pdf

You will notice that, in additionto the file size problem, the quality
of the output file is much better with simple-scan.

When the same document sheet is scanned with the default threshold
values (white=0.005 and black=0.12) the file size goes down to 317,2 kb,
which is still 4 times the size of simple-scan, with no visible quality
improvement.

[Bug 864025] [NEW] if application launched at startup its window is overlayed by UNITY launcher

2011-10-01 Thread tranchais
Public bug reported:

using Ubuntu 11.04
using unity-3.8.16-0ubuntu1~natty2
using the option : 'Never hide the launcher'
If an application is automatically started at startup time, its window is
partially hidden by the unity launcher
If the same application if started manually after startup, its window is
normally displayed (i.e. immediately at the right of the unity launcher.

This problem didn't appear in the unity version distributed in the
original natty ISO, but only after a software update recently done.

If an application has a long menu, displayed as a global menu, it may be
overlayed by the applets that are displayed at the far right, preventing
acces to the rightmost menu entries.

[Bug 513381] [NEW] Palimsest changes the mount point without warning

2010-01-27 Thread tranchais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

Used software : Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, palimpsest 2.28.0

Conditions when it appears:
1. A subdirectory exists in /media, for example: /media/foo
2. No partition is mounted on this subdir (it does not appear in mtab)
3. The name of the subdirectory (in our example : foo) is given to palimpset as
a label name of a partition of an external USB disk
4. We ask Palimpsest to mount this partition

Result:
1. Palimpsest creates /media/foo_ (it adds the character '_') without warning
2. And it mount this partition under this new directory

My opinion is that this is an error because the user is expecting the partition
to be mounted on /media/foo. Palimpset should display a warning message and ask
the user what to do, or mount on /media/foo.
I know that Palimpsest displays the mount point, but in its display the mount
point is underlined and therefore the '_' is not visible.

[Bug 342782] Re: python-qwt5-qt4 will not install on Jaunty

2010-01-01 Thread tranchais
An other quick way and dirty way to have PyQwt5 installed and working
under Karmic is as follow:

1. install the karmic python-qwt5-qt4 broken package

2. download and unpack PyQwt-5.2.0.tar.gz

3. do (require g++ and sip4 to be installed) :
cd PyQwt-5.2.0
cd configure
python configure.py -Q ../qwt-5.2
make

4. don't do 'make install', instead copy :
/PyQwt-5.2.0/configure/iqt5qt4/_iqt.so to
/usr/lib/pyshared/python2.6/PyQt4/Qwt5
/PyQwt-5.2.0/configure/qwt5qt4/Qwt.so to
/usr/lib/pyshared/python2.6/PyQt4/Qwt5

That's it.
