Same here, does not work since years. Actually using NVidia 390.77-driver. Already tried to change the initalise-keys, without effect. Framebuffer on/off in OpenGL-settings makes no difference. Same problem here, I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and NVidia 8600GT. When I try to use the water effect, the screen goes dark for a while, and then returns to normal, but without the effect. Really weird, this is happening with my gnome-terminal too, when I press the TAB key. looks like I have this bug on presice pangolin, all the effects worked fine, it suddenly stopped working. I have got intel cpu and intel gpu. exactly what is described above, water effect gives an almost black screen, everything else works fine. Okay I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux never really got around to messing around with it anyway. I have finally downloaded it on my desktop and my brother on his laptop my compiz works fine except when I try blur but I don't really care about blur. The issue is water effect on a ATI Mobility 4500 HD Series. David I tried following your instructions but with out success were we suppose to include the files we downloaded with the all deb file. The way to true enlightenment or at the very least my brothers ability to use the water effect escapes me. Bonzo, Go to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, look for the 2.5.34-lucid folder (not the ones with the rc- suffix - those are release candidates), and download three files - the linux- headers-2.6.34-020634-all.deb file, the linux- headers-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634-amd64.deb, and the linux- image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634-amd64.deb. That's for a 64-bit installation such as I have. If you have the 32-bit installation, substitute the versions that end with i386.deb for those last two files only. Install the all.deb file first. You should just be able to double- click on them and gdebi package manager should launch. Afterwards, reboot and it should go to your new kernel by default. You will have to reinstall any proprietary drivers that were hand-installed - for example, I had to reinstall the Broadcom proprietary driver. Couple of other patches needed to be applied to the new kernel as well - one for the CD eject button, one to fix a ureadahead error on bootup. If you have problems on bootup you can hold the shift key down and get a menu allowing you to boot into your old kernel. OK, here's my solution - it worked for me: uninstalled the proprietary fglrx driver, upgraded to kernel 2.6.34-lucid release, installing the binary kernel, linux-headers, and all-deb packages, then enabled the xorg-edgers archive ppa and upgraded the open source video driver. Enabled dynamic power management in the kernel boot parameters, and now water effect is here in all it's glory and the video card runs at a reasonable speed - minimal fan noise, not running all out, not hot. I've got the same problem as well on 64-bit Lucid w/ HD5770 and fglrx 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6. Thanks! But when I use the open-source driver, the video card fan runs all the time. Anyway to fix that? Is there a way to configure the open-source driver not to run the card so hard? Rotate cube and other effects like painting fire on the screen are working BUT water effect !! It used to work flawlessly in previous Ubuntu releases but it just stopped when I dist-upgraded to Lucid Lynx lately.
