I checked to see if there were any updates as I am testing 12.04 Beta, and I check daily for updates to see if the minor issues are fixed or new ones develop, and after clicking check for updates nothing happened, so I clicked again and it crashed. Update manager crashed after installing 4 small updates. Running 12.04, beta1 . This has been plaguing 12.04 Alpha 1 for weeks now. There seems to be some key python dependancies that have not been installed properly (even through sudo apt-get upgrade) and so 63 updates are being held back. I'm wondering if all of these problems are due to the current problemss with python? hmm@Chris, you shouldn't have 63 held back updates. Have you tried running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to see if there is any possible dependancy resolution. I have had to run a dist-upgrade 2 or 3 times since I have started running the alpha. Right now I don't have any held back packages and a decently stable system. **Tip: make sure when you run a dist-upgrade that it doesn't remove anything vital such as 'Ubuntu-Desktop'. Also, whenever it wants to remove a full application or library, make sure that it will also install either an updated version or a replacement application to take it's spot. First Update manager wouldn't update at all, had to update via synaptic or bash. I am guessing what happened with the internet disconnected was that it didn't install updates while installing...which is strange because usually that would improve things during the post-install process. Also, the reason you had much more updates after you installed without the network is because you didn't install them while installing. The download and install updates while installing feature is pretty nifty in that it grabs any serious and potentially damaging security and bug fixes prior to ever even installing Ubuntu. I am a 0day convert to the Linux world, and ran into this problem yesterday. Installing via Wubi download most recent version, 64 bit on all new/recent hardware. I also ran into many other problems - installing ATI driver (I know, not supported) would not work, Firefox acted real funny, Software manager lagging/not functioning properly, and another random crash I cannot remember (python something?)... Anyhow, I tried a few different install methods, and found one that worked for me, to freshly install without this problem (or any of the other ones) occurring, and now everything is running perfectly. All I did was disconnect my internet, burn the 11.10 amd64 ISO to a DVD, and Install Inside Windows (which is crucial to my conversion plan right now). This seems to end up doing most of the installation after the reboot (still not connected to internet). After getting to desktop, I rebooted again to be sure (My MS habits are going to take some time to change), and then ran update manager, which seemed to download way more data than the previous install and subsequent terminal update methods (almost 100 MB more after adding all totals). No crashing, all good and very fast/responsive. Anyhow, I don't know if this is helpful, but since everything works perfect for me now I wanted to give back to the community since that is how I understand things get done around here. This is how I solved the problem for me (and many other unexpected ones I could only feel had to be related somehow but wouldn't know where to look yet). If this post was not useful, I am open to criticism on where to go/what to read to get more up to speed. Similarly, I'd be happy to recreate the original error for further testing/feedback if needed, but still kinda clueless to this side of things. Trying to learn quickly. Just got this today when trying to check for updates in the Update Manager on Precise after installing some updates it had already displayed. The window went unresponsive for a while but did nothing as far as I could tell, and I switched back to Firefox for some browsing. Also problem with update-manager using 12.04alpha 32bit. Most time not working or not asking for password. Currently using 12.04 Alpha 1, upgraded via live cd. did a terminal source list update, sudo apt-get update, which succeded. Update manager loaded saying there were updates, clicked on install, and Update manager crashed. restarted it, clicked on update, and update manager crashed again.
